BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State heavyweight Jake Swirple kept his collegiate career perfect and Kelby Armstrong remained unbeaten on the season as both picked up a win Sunday in a non-conference dual at NSIC rival the University of Mary. Those were the lone victories on the day for Minot State, though, as the Beavers lost their first dual of the season, 25-6 to the Marauders. Minot State (3-1 duals) now is off until after the new year when they wrestle at the Western Colorado Open in Gunnison, Colorado, on January 6. Swirple moved to 6-0 this season and 20-0 in his collegiate career with a 2-1 decision over Mary’s Luke Tweeton in their 285-pound match. Armstrong added the other Beaver victory in his 159-pound match, earning a 4-3 decision over Leo Mushinsky. Armstrong improved 4-0 this season with the win.

NDSU MEN’S BASKETBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – Six Bison scored in double figures as the North Dakota State men’s basketball team rolled to a 99-54 victory over Waldorf on Sunday evening at the Scheels Center. Junior Boden Skunberg led the scoring for the Bison, finishing with 19 points. Freshman guard Lance Waddles scored a season-high 14 points – hitting 4-of-7 from three-point range – and fellow freshmen Damari Wheeler-Thomas and Sam Hastreiter both added 13. NDSU sophomore Jacari White chipped in 12 points for his fourth double-digit scoring output in the last five games. Junior forward Grant Nelson registered a double-double for the Bison with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Bison shot a season-best 54 percent for the game and limited the Warriors to 33-percent shooting. NDSU raced out to a 26-12 lead in the game’s first nine minutes and expanded the margin to as much as 23 in the first half. Bison sophomore Joshua Streit made his first career start and finished with seven rebounds. NDSU improved to 3-9 on the season. The Bison will open Summit League play at Western Illinois on Monday, Dec. 19.

VIKINGS-LIONS

DETROIT (AP) — Jared Goff threw for 330 yards and three touchdowns, leading the surging Detroit Lions to a 34-23 win over the NFC North-leading Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings needed a win or tie to clinch the division title. Kirk Cousins threw for 425 yards, including a franchise-record 223 to Justin Jefferson on 11 catches. But Dalvin Cook ran for just 23 yards on 15 carries, and Minnesota couldn’t stop Goff. Cook’s 1.5 yards per carry were the fewest in a game with at least 10 attempts in his career. Cook, who entered averaging 77.3 yards per game, was unable to get unleashed against a Lions defense which is ranked last in the league. Detroit has won five of six, its best stretch since its last postseason appearance in 2016. The Lions invested a lot to give Goff deep-play threats this season, signing DJ Chark in free agency and trading up to draft Jameson Williams 12th overall. The moves finally paid off against Minnesota.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State head coach Greggmar Swift said he was excited to see what freshman sprinter Summer Krebsbach could do. Making her collegiate debut Saturday, the speedster from Max, North Dakota, went ahead and set a new NCAA Division II school record in her first meet as she finished fourth in the 60-meter dash at the Marauder Indoor Open hosted by the University of Mary. Krebsbach was fourth in 8.01 seconds in the finals of the event in her first collegiate meet, breaking the D-II record of 8.09 seconds run by Mary Roy in 2014. She also added a ninth-place finish in the 200 meters in her first meet, clocking a time of 27.61 seconds for the Beavers, who didn’t stop there in Coach Swift’s debut, as newcomer Chase Snyder added a victory in his first Minot State meet, and returning hurdler Nathan Trujillo-Aragon also added a win for the Beavers.

Synder, a sophomore thrower from Lake Andes, South Dakota, won the men’s shot put at the meet with a throw of 50 feet 7.5 inches. And while not a school record, it nearly was as Snyder’s mark ranks third in Minot State’s D-II era. And also adding a win was Trujillo-Aragon who blazed his way to victory in the 8.59 seconds, the second-fastest time in Minot State’s D-II era. Trujillo-Aragon clocked the fastest time of 8.47, as well, in 2021. While they led the way, the Beavers also got a second- and third-place finish from Corbin Harris and Hunter Clark in the men’s weight throw as Harris had a distance of 50-10.75 and Clark a throw of 50-4, and Dallas Reese added a third-place finish in the men’s shot put with a throw of 47-9.25. On the women’s side, Chloe Gunderson also added a second-place finish in the shot out with a throw of 40-4.75. Having broken the ice on the indoor track and field season, the Beavers now get a month off for the Christmas and New Year’s breaks and return to action back in Bismarck, North Dakota, competing at the Mike Thorson Open hosted by the University of Mary on January 14.

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – North Dakota State fullback Hunter Luepke, left tackle Cody Mauch and defensive end Spencer Waege were named to the HERO Sports FCS All-America Team announced Thursday. Luepke, a fullback from Spencer, Wis., is the fifth player in Bison history to earn All-America honors in three different seasons. The others were kicker/punter Aaron Pederson (1999-01), cornerback Marcus Williams (2011-2013), defensive end Greg Menard (2015, 2016, 2018) and right tackle Cordell Volson (2019-21). Luepke was a first team All-American in 2020 and 2021 as selected by Stats Perform and Phil Steele, and he was first team by HERO Sports in 2021. Mauch is a two-time All-American earning second team honors from the Associated Press and third team from HERO Sports in 2021. Waege is a two-time All-American with second team honors from the AFCA and third team from Phil Steele in 2020-21. All three Bison honorees were previously named to the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference first team. No. 3 seed North Dakota State (10-2) is scheduled host sixth-seeded Southern Conference champion Samford (11-1) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Football Championship at 6 p.m. tonight at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.

VIKINGS-NFC NORTH

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Vikings can clinch the NFC North with a win or a tie at Detroit. That suddenly seems like a challenging task. The Lions have won four of five games to surge into the playoff picture as a wild-card contender. Minnesota beat the Lions 28-24 in September at home and coach Dan Campbell still laments a decision he made late in that game. Campbell made a cautious call to try a 54-yard field goal with 1:14 left and the Lions leading by three points and the Vikings out of timeouts. The kick was missed the game was later lost.

NFL-THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Baker Mayfield threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds to play to cap a 98-yard drive, and the Los Angeles Rams’ brand-new quarterback led two TD drives late in the fourth quarter of a shocking 17-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Just two days after the Rams claimed Mayfield off waivers from Carolina, the former No. 1 pick went 22 of 35 for 230 yards and snapped the defending Super Bowl champions’ six-game losing streak in dramatic fashion. Josh Jacobs rushed for 99 yards and the only touchdown for the Raiders, whose three-game winning streak ended in humiliating fashion.

Thursday night’s loss makes the Las Vegas Raiders the first team to blow four double-digit halftime leads in a season, according to SportRadar, whose records go back to 1930. Seven teams had squandered three halftime leads of 10 points or more, most recently the 2020 Los Angeles Chargers. While Indianapolis’ 25-20 victory on Nov. 13 in Jeff Saturday’s coaching debut was shocking, Baker Mayfield directing an eight play, 98-yard drive, including a 23-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds remaining, was just as stupefying. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the longest go-ahead TD drive that began in the final two minutes over the last 45 seasons.

Dan Vladar gave up two goals on his first three shots before settling in and finishing with 25 saves in his fourth straight victory. Kirill Kaprizov extended his goal streak to an NHL-leading seven games for the Wild. Mason Shaw and Jon Merrill also scored for Minnesota, which had its four-game winning streak halted. Marc-Andre Fleury had 22 saves as his record fell to 9-6-1.

WOLVES-PACERS
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — D’Angelo Russell had 15 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter, Anthony Edwards scored 26 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves held on to beat the Indiana Pacers 121-115 on Wednesday night. Rudy Gobert added 16 points and 20 rebounds for Minnesota, which blew a 23-point lead and had to overcome an eight-point deficit. The Timberwolves — who had 23 turnovers — won for just the second time in six games. Buddy Hield scored 26 points and hit 7 of 11 from 3-point territory for Indiana, which has lost four of five and couldn’t follow a victory Monday night in Golden State. Tyrese Haliburton added 26 points and 15 assists for the Pacers.

VIKINGS-INJURY
EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings placed cornerback Akayleb Evans on injured reserve after his most recent concussion. The roster move means the rookie must sit out at least the next four games. This makes room for cornerback Cameron Dantzler. He was designated for return from injured reserve following a four-game absence because of an ankle injury. Evans started two of the four games that Dantzler missed. He was sidelined by a concussion for the other two. He had a recurrence of the head injury in Minnesota’s most recent game. The Vikings play Sunday at Detroit.

BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s basketball team got a 16-point performance from the bench, but fell 61-44 to the Mary Marauders on the road Tuesday in NSIC action. Kate Head led the Beavers (5-4 overall, 1-2 NSIC) with 12 points. Minot State kept it close in the first quarter, but entered the second frame down 17-16. The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 36-27 halftime deficit. Minot State’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Beavers faced a 48-35 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring six of its eight points in the paint in the third quarter. Mary kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 61-39 advantage before Minot State went on a 5-0 run, finished off by Emily Srejma’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 61-44 with 36 seconds to go in the contest, a score which would hold for the rest of the game. Minot State took advantage of three Mary turnovers in the quarter, scoring three points off of those takeaways. The Beavers will travel to Duluth on Friday.

MOSCOW, Idaho (UND) – In a game that featured six lead changes, North Dakota suffered a 76-66 decision to Idaho inside the ICCU Arena on Tuesday night. UND trimmed the deficit to one moments later at 57-56 before a 6-0 run from the Vandals increased their lead to 63-56. North Dakota would not get any closer after that point and ultimately fell, 76-66. B.J. Omot paced NoDak, putting in 15 points. He played a team-high 35 minutes and led the Fighting Hawks in both rebounds (7) and blocks (2). Jalun Trent recorded a career-high 13 points, throwing down eight points in the second half alone. CEDAR FALLS, IOWA (NDSU) – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team fell short at Northern Iowa, 79-70, on Tuesday night at McLeod Center. Northern Iowa then began the second half building their largest lead of the night, 57-40, by the 3:20 mark of the third quarter. The Panthers led after three quarters of play, 63-48. NDSU surged back in the fourth frame putting together an 11-3 run to cut the edge down to single digits, 73-65, after Elle Evans drained a layup. However, NDSU wasn’t able to trim the deficit any further and went on to drop the contest, 79-70. VIKINGS-DEFENSE

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Camryn Bynum jumped in front of New York Jets wide receiver Corey Davis for the fourth-down interception just in front of the goal line, preserving another harrowing Minnesota Vikings victory. The second-year safety added that highlight with 10 seconds left to the collection of well-timed stops and game-ending turnovers the Vikings (10-2) have used to effectively minimize their big-play vulnerability on defense this season. Their perfect record in nine games decided by eight points or fewer has been made possible by a defense that has taken the bend-not-break mantra to a whole new level. “Honestly if we can win, I don’t give a damn, even though we want to bury them and close it out when we can,” linebacker Eric Kendricks said. “These teams are really good. They have players that can play too. We have 10 wins. Everybody’s gunning for us and knows that we’re a target, so we’re getting everybody’s best to the very last second.”

The Jets had 24 plays inside the 20-yard line, all in the second half. They netted 36 yards and scored only one touchdown in six opportunities. The Vikings also stopped the Jets short of the sticks on 13 of 16 third downs and three of five fourth downs. On the other hand, only Detroit — which Minnesota visits this Sunday — has allowed more total yards per game in the NFL this season. No team has permitted more passing yards per game or per play than the Vikings. “You have to continue to look at it, just because it just puts a lot of pressure on your football team,” coach Kevin O’Connell said.

WHAT’S WORKING
Facing a stout defensive front, the Vikings quietly had one of their most productive games running the ball this season with 128 yards on 29 attempts. Dalvin Cook rushed 20 times for 86 yards, and he and Alexander Mattison each had second-quarter touchdowns. “The belief we have in those two, they’re warriors,” right tackle Brian O’Neill said. “I want to give them the rock.” According to Sportradar data, the Vikings gained a season-high 84.4% of their rushing yards before initial contact by the defense on Sunday.

WHAT NEEDS HELP
No quarterback in the NFL has been pressured (123) or hit (93) more times this season than Kirk Cousins, per Sportradar. After taking several jarring blows from the Jets, the ultra-durable Cousins said he was fine physically but acknowledged the rush affected his accuracy. He went 21 for 35.

STOCK UP
The safety tandem of Bynum and Harrison Smith combined for 15 tackles and five pass breakups in addition to the picks. Smith is third in the league with five interceptions.

STOCK DOWN
WR K.J. Osborn has totaled only 14 receptions for 103 yards over the past seven games. Cousins has completed only 58% of his passes targeting Osborn, compared to 69% for Justin Jefferson and 68% for Adam Thielen. Osborn, who had seven touchdown catches last season, has just two this year.

INJURY REPORT
Cameron Dantzler Sr. is on track to come off injured reserve and has a “great chance” per O’Connell to return Sunday to the depth-tested cornerback position opposite Patrick Peterson. Akayleb Evans started against the Jets after a two-game absence because of a concussion, only to re-enter the protocol in the third quarter, and he’s already been ruled out against the Lions. The rookie has had three concussions since joining the team. “Before Akayleb plays again we want to make sure it’s 100% the right timing for him because we care more about the player health and safety,” O’Connell said. Left tackle Christian Darrisaw, who has also been in the concussion protocol twice in the past four weeks, has been held out of the past two games. He practiced Friday and has been progressing.

KEY NUMBER
19. Vikings opponents have made 19 consecutive field goals since a miss by Miami’s Jason Sanders on Oct. 16. Greg Zuerlein went 5 for 5 for the Jets, including a 60-yarder. Of the seven field goals made from 60-plus yards in the NFL in the past two seasons, four have come against the Vikings.

UP NEXT
The Vikings would clinch the NFC North title by winning Sunday at Detroit (5-7). Then they have two more home games, against Indianapolis (4-7-1) and the New York Giants (7-4-1).

NFL-MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Tom Brady threw a pair of touchdown passes in the final three minutes Monday night, helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers rally from a 13-point deficit to beat the New Orleans Saints 17-16 and tighten their grip on first place in the weak NFC South. The seven-time Super Bowl champion tossed a one-yard TD pass to rookie Cade Otton, finishing a 91-yard drive to pull within 16-10 with exactly three minutes remaining. He got the ball back with 2:29 to go, then won it with a 6-yard throw to another rookie, Rachaad White, with three seconds left.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (UND) – The University of North Dakota women’s basketball team defeated Eastern Michigan, 79-73, on Sunday afternoon at the George Gervin GameAbove Center in Ypsilanti, Mich. UND (5-3) has now won three straight games dating back to last weekend, captured its first road victory of the season and handed Eastern Michigan (5-1) its first loss of the year. Kacie Borowicz put together another sparkling performance, notching another 30-point game. The senior tallied 34 points on 10-of-19 shooting to just miss her career best, previously set this season, by a single point. The Roseau, Minn., native also finished with seven rebounds, five assists and a steal in 38 minutes of action to finish as the team’s leading scorer for the eighth straight game. Claire Orth also reached double figures for the Fighting Hawks, matching her season-best with 16 points.

In game that saw 12 lead changes and 10 ties, North Dakota trailed for a majority of the third quarter until a bucket from Nakiyah Hurst gave the Hawks a 57-55 advantage late in the stanza, but a 5-2 run by the Eagles put the hosts in front by just one, 60-59, after 30 minutes. Borowicz helped put the Hawks back in the lead midway through the fourth, knocking down a jumper to make it 65-64 before collecting a defensive rebound and finding Orth for a basket on the ensuing possession to extend the advantage to 67-64 with six minutes to play. After a pair of free throws from Daninger kept the visitors up by three, 71-68, EMU eventually tied the game at 71 with just over a minute to go, but Borowicz connected on a jumper from a Gordon assist to restore the lead for good. Borowicz then hit six straight at the charity stripe to polish off the 79-73 victory. North Dakota returns home to battle former Big Sky Conference foe Weber State next Saturday from the Betty Englestad Sioux Center at 1 p.m.

VIKINGS-JETS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — In the tension of these habitually tight finishes, the Minnesota Vikings have become quite the confident and comfortable team. Justin Jefferson’s touchdown catch with 8:33 left gave the Vikings a large enough lead to hang on for a 27-22 victory despite a relentless rally by the New York Jets on Sunday. Camryn Bynum’s interception at the 1-yard line with 10 seconds left finally sealed it for the Vikings (10-2), who completed a four-game sweep of the AFC East in their typical high-wire fashion. But nail-biters? Nah, they’ve been leaving that part for the fans. “It feels like any other play,” Bynum said. “I know pressure’s on us. We’re in the red zone, fourth down, one play to lose the game or win the game, but to us that’s normal football.”

Mike White, who was picked off twice, was 31 of 57 for 369 yards in his second start this season for the Jets (7-5). He scored on a fourth-and-goal sneak from the 1 to pull within five points with 6:45 to go after a replay review reversed the initial ruling that he was stopped short. With 1:43 remaining with the chance to take the lead, White’s fourth-and-goal pass from the 1 was incomplete when Braxton Berrios bobbled it and the ball hit the turf. “They’ve been winning like this all year, and we didn’t make the play that we needed to make,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. The Jets had all three timeouts left and got the ball right back at the Minnesota 43, but with White under plenty of pressure they stalled out at the 19. “When these moments do arise,” linebacker Jordan Hicks said, “nobody has a doubt that we’re going to win the game.”

Dalvin Cook and Alexander Mattison rushed for second-quarter touchdowns and Greg Joseph made his two field goals and three extra points for the Vikings, who took a 20-3 lead late in the second quarter. Kirk Cousins finished 21 of 35 for 173 yards. Blowouts just aren’t their thing, though. They netted 10 yards on three third-quarter possessions and found themselves in their ninth one-score game of the season — all wins. The Vikings are one win or one Lions loss from clinching the NFC North and have a healthy lead for the No. 2 seed in the conference. “I do feel like we’re going to be able to rely on these experiences, how we’ve won games,” first-year coach Kevin O’Connell said.

PACKERS-BEARS

CHICAGO (AP) — Aaron Rodgers led three fourth-quarter scoring drives and the Green Bay Packers rallied to beat the Chicago Bears 28-19. Packers receiver Christian Watson ran for a 46-yard touchdown in the closing minutes after Jaire Alexander intercepted Justin Fields. Green Bay trailed 19-10 after three quarters but made enough plays down the stretch to come away with its eighth straight win over the Bears. Rodgers improved to 25-5 against the Bears, including playoffs. Chicago has lost six straight. Fields ran for a 55-yard touchdown in the second quarter and finished with 71 yards on six attempts. He was 20 of 25 passing for 254 yards but threw two interceptions.

WILD-STARS

DALLAS (AP) — Mats Zuccarello, Kirill Kaprizov and Frederick Gaudreau scored on Minnesota’s three shootout attempts and the Wild beat the Dallas Stars 6-5 on Sunday after blowing a four-goal lead in the third period. Coming off a 5-4 shootout victory over Anaheim on Saturday, Minnesota ran its winning streak to four. Roope Hintz had his second career hat trick for the Stars, who earned points for the 10th time in 11 games. Jason Robertson and Joe Pavelski scored to open the shootout, but Hintz’s backhander rolled just short of the goal line, giving Gaudreau the chance to end it. Hintz’s final goal, with an extra skater on, tied it at 5 with 2:11 left in regulation.

NDSU-FCS PLAYOFFS

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Kobe Johnson ran for 206 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback Cam Miller also ran for two scores and third-seeded North Dakota State pounded Montana 49-26 in the second round of the FCS playoffs. The defending and nine-time champion Bison piled up 453 yards on the ground and turned three turnovers by the Grizzlies into 21 points. North Dakota State is home against sixth-seeded Samford in the quarterfinals next weekend. Corbin Walker returned a Miller interception 58 yards early in the second half to pull the Grizzlies within 21-20. The Bison responded and scored on four of their next five possessions. Johnson had touchdown runs of 75 and 73 yards and TaMerik Williams had a 68-yarder. After that NDSU went 87 yards in nine plays, capped by TK Marshall’s seven-yard TD run.

TIMBERWOLVES-THUNDER

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 33 points in his return to action and the Oklahoma City Thunder took advantage of Rudy Gobert’s early ejection to post a chippy 135-128 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The teams were called for a combined eight technical fouls. Gilgeous-Alexander, the NBA’s third-leading scorer with a 31-point average, sat out one game earlier this week with a bruised hip. But he had no trouble getting physical against Minnesota, making 10 of 17 shots and all 12 of his free throws. Josh Giddey had 21 points and 12 assists for the Thunder in his eighth double-double of the season. D’Angelo Russell led the Timberwolves with 27 points and Anthony Edwards added 26 points. Gobert was ejected for tripping Kenrich Williams in the second quarter.

WILD-DUCKS

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy scored in the shootout, helping the Minnesota Wild to a 5-4 win over the Anaheim Ducks. Calen Addison and Joel Eriksson Ek each had a goal and assist during regulation, and Minnesota won for the fifth time in six games. Filip Gustavsson made 29 saves in goal for Minnesota, which rallied with two goals in third period, including Kaprizov’s tying goal with 2:35 remaining. Ryan Strome, Cam Fowler, Trevor Zegras and Troy Terry scored for Anaheim, and John Gibson stopped 45 shots. The Ducks lost their fifth straight game.

MSU FOOTBALL-COACH

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State University will be looking for a new head football coach. The University announced Friday that coach Mike Aldrich’s contract is not being renewed, marking the end of his 6-year tenure as head coach of the program. Minot State University will immediately start the process of identifying a new head coach. During Coach Aldrich’s time at Minot State, the Beavers saw offensive lineman Sebastian Gutierrez become an NFL prospect as the former Minot State player signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos during the summer of 2022. JoseLuis Moreno, Ali Mohamed, and Gutierrez were named All-Americans under Coach Aldrich’s guidance, Philip Green was honored as one of just 22 players in all of college football to be named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team in the fall of 2021, and defensive lineman Will Jordan was named a CoSIDA First Team Academic All-American. During Coach Aldrich’s tenure – which included the cancelation of the 2020 season because of COVID – the Beavers compiled a 10-45 overall record, all of which were NSIC games.

NDSU-FCS PLAYOFFS

FARGO, ND (NDSU) – North Dakota State makes its 13th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Division I Football Championship today when the No. 3-seeded Bison (9-2) face the 17th-ranked Montana Grizzlies (8-4) in the second round. Game time is 2:30 p.m. at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. While NDSU and the other top eight national seeds were off last week with a bye, Montana rallied from a 24-3 third quarter deficit to beat Southeast Missouri State 34-24 in a first-round game in Missoula. Malik Flowers’ 80-yard kickoff return touchdown sparked the rally and the Griz tied the game less than five minutes later when Junior Bergen scored on a 58-yard punt return. North Dakota State has a 5-4 lead in the all-time series with Montana dating back to 1914. The teams haven’t met since the 2015 second round in Fargo, a 37-6 NDSU win. Montana is 0-2 in the Fargodome including a 22-10 regular-season loss in 2014. ESPN+ will have exclusive coverage available to subscribers on ESPN.com and the ESPN app.

MSU MEN’S BASKETBALL

MOORHEAD, Minn. (MSU) – The Minot State men’s basketball team got a 43-point showing from the bench, but fell 84-63 to the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons on the road Thursday in NSIC play. The Beavers (3-3 overall, 0-2 NSIC) had two players score in double figures, led by Michael Jok who had 13 points. Caleb Van De Griend tacked on 10 points, seven rebounds and two blocks off the bench, and Jalen Cook added nine points. Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 51-26 heading into halftime. Minnesota State Moorhead kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 57-30 advantage before Minot State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Jok’s three, to shrink the deficit to 57-38 with 14:50 to go in the contest. Minnesota State Moorhead responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 84-63. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 37 points in the lane.

MSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

MOORHEAD, Minn. (MSU) – Kate Head scored 10 points and Jaime Skeggs had 10 more, but the Beavers fell to the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons 57-33 on the road Thursday in the NSIC opener for the Beavers. Vilborg Jonsdottir added four assists and four steals for Minot State (4-3 overall, 0-1 NSIC). Minot State’s defense held Minnesota State Moorhead to only 19 percent shooting from beyond the arc and 40 percent from the field. The Beavers also limited Natalie Jens to 1-of-7 shooting from downtown in the game. The Dragons did not have much luck cleaning up their misses on the offensive glass either, as they finished with eight offensive rebounds and managed just 11 second-chance points. The Beavers host Northern State on Saturday.

NSDU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

YPSILANTI, Mich. (NDSU) – Eastern Michigan outscored the North Dakota State women’s basketball team 26-12 in the fourth quarter to steal a 73-55 win on Thursday night. Elle Evans paced NDSU (6-1) with a team-high 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting from three. She also hauled in a season-best seven rebounds with two blocks, one assist and one steal. Emily Behnke reached double digits in scoring for the third time this season with 10 points to go along with five rebounds. Taylor Brown also added in nine points with five rebounds. As a team, NDSU shot 32.8 percent (22-67) from the field and 60.0 percent (6-10) from the free throw line. The Bison also netted 34 points in the paint and scored 11 points off of turnovers. After NDSU notched a 30-29 lead at halftime, the Bison started the third quarter pushing their edge to three, 36-33, following a layup from Evans. Eastern Michigan (5-0) then battled back closing the frame with four straight points to steal a 47-43 advantage. The Eagles continued to surge into the fourth quarter expanding their lead up to 10, 53-43, with 8:36 to play. Eastern Michigan then opened up its largest lead of the night, 67-47, after Olivia Smith knocked down a free throw with 3:43 to play. The Eagles went on to close out the rest of the time to pick up the 73-55 win. NDSU will be back in action at Central Michigan on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is set for noon CT.

WILD-OILERS

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov had a goal and two assists to extend his career-best point streak to 10 games, and Joel Eriksson Ek added a goal and assist, leading the Minnesota Wild to a 5-3 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Thursday night. Kaprizov has a goal in four straight games after scoring his 14th of the season. He also has nine straight games with an assist, and eight goals and 11 assists in his last 13 games. Frederick Gaudreau, Sam Steel and Mats Zuccarello also scored for Minnesota, which has won four of five. Marc-Andre Fleury made 18 saves. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl extended goal streaks for Edmonton, which had won three in a row.

VIKINGS-COUSINS/JEFFERSON

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The long pass from Kirk Cousins up the left sideline landed in Justin Jefferson’s arms in just the right spot in the fourth quarter of Minnesota’s game with New England, a split second before two Patriots defensive backs slammed into the Vikings star. Jefferson kept the ball secure for a 36-yard reception as he hit the turf, before springing to his feet, flexing his muscles in celebration and screaming to the roaring crowd. The Vikings scored the go-ahead touchdown on the next play, after yet another contested catch by the indefatigable Jefferson. “I love this team. I’d do anything for it, and when that ball’s in the air, it’s mine,” Jefferson said. Already owning more receiving yards than any other third-year player in NFL history with six games left to pad his total, Jefferson has gained the trust of Cousins many times over. The quarterback has ever-growing confidence he can pinpoint a pass into a tricky spot and Jefferson will haul it in. “The eye in the sky don’t lie, we say,” Cousins said. “When he puts that stuff on tape, it earns the right to keep getting the ball.” Jefferson said he’s worked on hand-eye coordination, grip strength and peripheral vision to aid his success rate on those well-covered routes. The challenge won’t subside this week when the Vikings play the New York Jets, who boast a pair of standout cornerbacks: Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed. “I’m confident in my game, my skill set to win my battles, and hopefully we don’t get too many double teams,” Jefferson said.

The Vikings (9-2) can clinch their first NFC North title in five seasons with Cousins by beating the Jets and having Jacksonville win at Detroit (4-7), but they’ve largely kept their feelings about their dominance in the division to themselves with the obvious bigger picture of seeding for the NFC playoffs in the background. “I never think about future weeks, or really can’t afford to look in the rearview mirror either. It’s got to be all about this week and getting a win,” Cousins said, adding: “There are many teams who at this stage of the game are hovering around .500, and then they end up playing for the Super Bowl, so you understand how this league will beat you up and go back and forth.” The Jets (7-4) are one game out of the AFC East lead, in an even more foreign place with meaningful games ahead in December. They haven’t been to the playoffs in 12 years. “It’s not like it’s an elephant in the room. It’s not like you’re not going to acknowledge it, but none of it matters at the end of the day,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “You’ve got to quickly refocus back to what’s important, and what’s important is this moment.”

GREAT WHITE
Mike White stepped in for the Jets at quarterback for the benched Zach Wilson last week and performed with the poise and efficiency of a veteran in just his fourth career start — and first of the season. White went 22 of 28 for 315 yards and three touchdowns in the 31-10 victory over Chicago. “He comes in and prepares, goes about his business the right way and goes about his preparation the right way,” rookie receiver Garrett Wilson said. “You do things like that consistently, you’re going to get it back.” White already has just one fewer TD pass than Wilson and is two behind Joe Flacco for the team lead.

THE BREAKTHROUGH
Kene Nwangwu returned a kickoff 97 yards for the tying touchdown for the Vikings in the third quarter against the Patriots, his first score of the season after taking two of them all the way as a rookie last year. Special teams coordinator Matt Daniels blamed himself for holding Nwangwu back by overthinking the return schemes. He and assistant Ben Kotwica drew up a new plan on paper at halftime of that game that the Vikings had never practiced before. “What a breath of fresh air it was to see him take one to the house,” Daniels said. “I know we’ve all been waiting on it.”

MIDDLE MAN
The Vikings ought to get a boost for their defensive line with the return of Dalvin Tomlinson, who has missed the last four games with a calf injury. The only previous game he missed in six years in the NFL came last year when he was sidelined by COVID-19. Tomlinson, whose interior presence and push has contributed to edge rushers Za’Darius Smith and Danielle Hunter combining for 16 1/2 sacks, warmed up before the New England game but was held out as a precaution. “It was more just about trusting things, making sure the muscles were ready for the pounding you’re going to take during the game,” Tomlinson said.

FOOTBALL FRIEND
Jets wide receiver Elijah Moore, who requested a trade earlier this season because of a lack of opportunities, has been more involved in the passing attack lately. With White at quarterback, Moore caught his first touchdown pass of the season against the Bears after having five as a rookie last year. Moore said this week he actually took a ball the day before the game and had a monologue with it — even giving it a kiss for good measure. “I was like, ‘You already know how I feel about you,’” Moore said.

TIMBERWOLVES-GRIZZLIES

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards had 29 points, five steals and three blocks to lead Minnesota to a 109-101 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night in the first game of an extended absence for injured Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns. Jaylen Nowell added a season-high 24 points and D’Angelo Russell had 15 points and 10 assists for the Timberwolves, who forced a season-high 27 turnovers by the Grizzlies and snapped a three-game losing streak despite being outrebounded 59-29 in this sloppy but spirited matchup that included seven technical fouls. Ja Morant scored 24 points and Jaren Jackson Jr. had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who lost their cool down the stretch with successive ejections for Dillon Brooks and Morant. They had only 17 assists. Grizzlies rookie David Roddy, who finished 13 points and five rebounds in his native city, had eight points over three consecutive possessions midway through the fourth quarter. Then Edwards sprang to life with a tiebreaking 3-pointer and a block on Brandon Clarke’s layup that sparked a break he finished with a one-handed slam for a 90-85 lead.

The Timberwolves surrendered 279 points over their previous two contests and lost Towns in the process. Kyle Anderson drew the start against his former team for Towns and pitched in 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Naz Reid saw extended time inside and gave the Wolves seven points, a career-high tying five blocks and plenty of energy on both ends of the court. Gobert was mostly out of it, finding himself in foul trouble early and picking up a technical for complaining about his second one midway through the first quarter, but he finished with 10 points, six rebounds and five assists. Rookie Wendell Moore Jr., who had logged a total of 11 minutes to date, got his first career start in place of Jaden McDaniels, who missed his third consecutive game with an illness. Timberwolves: Host Oklahoma City on Saturday night.

VIKINGS-SECONDARY

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — For three straight weeks, the Minnesota Vikings have started a different cornerback because of injuries. Last week against New England, Duke Shelley was pressed into action when Andrew Booth Jr. was held out with a knee injury. Booth started one game in place of fellow rookie Akayleb Evans but then got hurt. And Evans got his shot when Cameron Dantzler Sr. went on injured reserve. Booth will miss the rest of the season after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus, but Minnesota is hoping the turnover at the position opposite veteran Patrick Peterson is mostly over. Dantzler, who started the first eight games, is eligible to return next week after recovering from an ankle injury. That means either Shelley or Evans could see playing time Sunday at home against the New York Jets.

The revolving door at cornerback has made an impact. Despite a 9-2 record and five-game lead in the NFC North, Minnesota has allowed the most passing yards in the NFL (276.1 per game). The Vikings have allowed more than 300 passing yards in each of the three games without Dantzler. “The medical team has been really trying to progress him off to the side and make sure he’s doing whatever he can to simulate different kinds of practice movements and in-game movements,” Minnesota coach Kevin O’Connell said of Dantzler. “So, when we do activate him, the hope is that it’ll be an activation and he’ll be able to be out there with us the following Sunday.”

Evans, a fourth-round rookie from Missouri, has missed the past two games while in the concussion protocol. “He’s in kind of the final phase of it, which is full-speed practice and then just making sure he gets a full day of work in, a padded practice, and see how he recovers and if we can move forward with him,” O’Connell said. If Evans can’t play, Shelley is ready to face the Jets and quarterback Mike White, who threw for 315 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions last week in a 31-10 win over Chicago. “I definitely embrace every matchup,” Shelley said. “I like me versus anybody. It doesn’t matter who it is. I’m going to bet on myself anytime. That’s why everybody was wondering why I went up to press on third downs. I want the ball to come my way. I want to make the play. So, it’s kind of my mentality.”

Booth, a second-round pick out of Clemson, played defensive snaps in just two games before his season ended. O’Connell said the rookie opted for a full repair of his meniscus, which is better for his long-term health. With Booth out, Minnesota has received little production from its top two draft picks. Safety Lewis Cine, a first-round pick, played in just three games and had two defensive snaps before suffering a broken leg. “You hate to see it because you see some of them guys, talented guys, especially young guys, you don’t want them guys to lose their confidence, things like that,” Shelley said. “Try to stay behind them and uplift them as much as you can, let them know that you’re here for them and everything’s going to be all right.”
