NDSU FOOTBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – North Dakota State fullback Hunter Luepke, left tackle Cody Mauch and defensive end Spencer Waege were named to the HERO Sports FCS All-America Team announced Thursday. Luepke, a fullback from Spencer, Wis., is the fifth player in Bison history to earn All-America honors in three different seasons. The others were kicker/punter Aaron Pederson (1999-01), cornerback Marcus Williams (2011-2013), defensive end Greg Menard (2015, 2016, 2018) and right tackle Cordell Volson (2019-21). Luepke was a first team All-American in 2020 and 2021 as selected by Stats Perform and Phil Steele, and he was first team by HERO Sports in 2021. Mauch is a two-time All-American earning second team honors from the Associated Press and third team from HERO Sports in 2021. Waege is a two-time All-American with second team honors from the AFCA and third team from Phil Steele in 2020-21. All three Bison honorees were previously named to the All-Missouri Valley Football Conference first team. No. 3 seed North Dakota State (10-2) is scheduled host sixth-seeded Southern Conference champion Samford (11-1) in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division I Football Championship at 6 p.m. tonight at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.

VIKINGS-NFC NORTH

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Vikings can clinch the NFC North with a win or a tie at Detroit. That suddenly seems like a challenging task. The Lions have won four of five games to surge into the playoff picture as a wild-card contender. Minnesota beat the Lions 28-24 in September at home and coach Dan Campbell still laments a decision he made late in that game. Campbell made a cautious call to try a 54-yard field goal with 1:14 left and the Lions leading by three points and the Vikings out of timeouts. The kick was missed the game was later lost.

NFL-THURSDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL

INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) — Baker Mayfield threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds to play to cap a 98-yard drive, and the Los Angeles Rams’ brand-new quarterback led two TD drives late in the fourth quarter of a shocking 17-16 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Just two days after the Rams claimed Mayfield off waivers from Carolina, the former No. 1 pick went 22 of 35 for 230 yards and snapped the defending Super Bowl champions’ six-game losing streak in dramatic fashion. Josh Jacobs rushed for 99 yards and the only touchdown for the Raiders, whose three-game winning streak ended in humiliating fashion.

Thursday night’s loss makes the Las Vegas Raiders the first team to blow four double-digit halftime leads in a season, according to SportRadar, whose records go back to 1930. Seven teams had squandered three halftime leads of 10 points or more, most recently the 2020 Los Angeles Chargers. While Indianapolis’ 25-20 victory on Nov. 13 in Jeff Saturday’s coaching debut was shocking, Baker Mayfield directing an eight play, 98-yard drive, including a 23-yard touchdown pass to Van Jefferson with 10 seconds remaining, was just as stupefying. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it was the longest go-ahead TD drive that began in the final two minutes over the last 45 seasons.
