MINOT, ND – The Bismarck Bobcats shutout the Minot Minotauros on Friday night at Maysa Arena, 3-0. Evan Hunter and Kade Kohanski tallied first period goals and Julian Beaumont added a goal in the third period, while Stephen Peck stopped all 32 shots from the Tauros. Brady James made 23 saves on 26 shots for Minot. The rivalry featured 18 minutes of penaltes. The Bobcats have now won nine in a row and picked up two points in the standings. The Tauros lead in the NAHL Central Division is down to five points over the Bobcats. The two teams play again tonight in Bismarck.

MSU MENS HOCKEY
CHESTERFIELD, MO. (MSU) – It was a game with a high-stakes momentum swing, as the Minot State men’s hockey team was in Missouri to kickstart a two-game set with Maryville University. The Beavers battled with the Saints in a hard-fought contest. Unfortunately, it would be the No. 1 Beavers (26-6-0) falling to Maryville (20-9-2) by a final score of 3-2. Minot State got behind the eight ball early, falling 2-0 after the first period. The Saints were both determined and confident in their first two goals, with a nice follow-up effort just 46 seconds into the game and a finisher on the power play at 8:41. The Beavers did not let that get into their head, as they put on their hard hats and went to work. An opportunity to get back in it on the power play is just what the doctor ordered at 2:12 in the second period. And sometimes, you might just get lucky if you work hard enough. Thus, the Beavers were rewarded after redirecting the puck in traffic for a tie game. Inching closer to the one-minute mark of the third, a heartbreaker of a goal and incredible hand-eye coordination by Maryville for the game winner seals it with 1:10 left to go in regulation. Down 2-0, it was Joey Moffatt who got the Beavers back to a one-goal deficit to cut the lead in half. His 10th was followed by Walker Jerome’s eighth of the season as he got a touch on a shot from the blue line that trickled in. Jake Anthony got the start in net for the Beavers. After the early 2-0 deficit, he regained composure and gave his team a chance to win with 31 saves on 34 shots. Both teams will meet again tonight for an 8:00 p.m. (CT) puck drop at Maryville University Hockey Center.

BROOKINGS, S.D. (MSU) – It was a memorable evening on the track for the Beavers’ senior distance runner Grayson Bonilla. Bonilla nearly won the men’s 5,000 meters Friday evening at the South Dakota State University Indoor Classic, finishing second in the event in a career-best time of 15 minutes, 49.17 seconds. Bonilla’s time ranks ninth-best in the NSIC this winter and led the way for the Minot State track and field teams at the meet, which concludes today. Emery Smith led the way for the Minot State women as she was 10th in the women’s 5,000 meters in 18:34.38, while teammate Paulette Dominguez added an 18th-place finish in the women’s 3,000 in 10:33.67, and Camden Jasmin was 49th in the men’s 3,000 meters in 9:17.44 as a limited number of Beavers competed on Friday night.

MSU MENS WRESTLING
ABERDEEN, S.D. (MSU) – Senior Cayden White picked a win by pin in his 184-pound match, sparking a surge in the heavyweights for the Beavers who scored a 24-18 road dual win over NSIC rival Northern State on Friday. White pinned the Wolves’ Sam Kruger in 2 minutes, 33 seconds, giving the Beavers (9-7 duals, 4-4 NSIC) a crucial six team points as Minot State won the final three matches of the dual to erase a 19-11 deficit. Cannon Potts added a 9-5 decision victory over Treyton Cacek at 197 pounds to giving Minot State a 20-19 lead, then Jake Swirple won a 17-9 major decision at 285 pounds to wrap up the victory. Northern State lost one team point for a misconduct, leading to the final 24-18 score. While Minot State dominated the top-end weights, they got things started at 133 pounds with a 13-2 major decision win by Wayne Joint for an early 4-3 lead. After back-to-back wins for the Wolves, Kelby Armstrong added an 11-1 major decision win for the Beavers in the 157-pound match, then Brendan Barnes scored a 4-1 sudden-victory win at 165 pounds as he scored a takedown in overtime for the victory over Chase Bloomquist. A pin for Northern State gave them a 19-11 advantage before the Beavers charge in the heavyweights for the victory. The Beavers have one more regular-season match on the schedule left as they head to Minnesota State Moorhead next Saturday for a final dual before hosting the Super Region V tournament on Saturday, March 2, at the All-Seasons Arena at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds.

(AP) — Kirill Kaprizov scored the tiebreaking goal midway through the third period and Marc-Andre Fleury made 32 saves as the Minnesota Wild beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 on Friday night. Matt Boldy and Jonas Brodin also scored for Minnesota, which has won five of seven. Fleury, who earned his 553rd career win, was honored in a pregame ceremony nearly a month after passing Patrick Roy (551) for second place in NHL history. He trails only Martin Brodeur, who has 691 wins. With the team that drafted Fleury first overall in 2003 and where he won three Stanley Cups looking on, including former teammates still in Pittsburgh, the Wild honored Fleury with a video tribute and the goalie was given a silver, engraved stick noting his topping 1,000 games played, a $5,000 donation to a charity of Fleury’s choice and a souvenir mask with each of the four teams he played on. Reilly Smith and Sidney Crosby scored for the Penguins, and Alex Nedeljkovic made 27 saves. The Wild play at Vegas on Monday night.
