MINOTAUROS
MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros were shutout by the Austin Bruins 2-0 on Friday. Brady James made 20 saves on 22 shots by the Bruins. Bismarck defeated Aberdeen 5-1, so the Tauros lead atop the NAHL Central Division is down to four points.

MSU WOMENS HOCKEY
LYNCHBURG, VA. (MSU) – Day two of the WMCH Conference Tournament saw plenty of action, with a total of four games featuring two consolation matches and the other two as semifinals. The Minot State women’s hockey team had the right to play in one of those semifinal games, but the competition ramps up the further the rounds go. 2-seed Midland University, who is still undefeated, was the next task for the Beavers. The 3rd-seeded Beavers could not muster anything versus Midland, as the Warriors shut out Minot State in a 2-0 final score. Throughout the first two periods of regulation, the Beavers weathered the storm despite being heavily outshot by Midland. There were still donuts on the scoreboard heading into the third period, until a costly penalty by the Beavers would give Midland the break they were looking for on a fresh set of ice. A power-play goal at the 44-second mark of the third finally got the scoring started. The Beavers would end up behind the eight ball early in the final period of regulation, while in need of an answer fast. After almost 19 minutes passed by, the Warriors picked up the dagger to make it 2-0 with 19 seconds left in the third period. That goal gassed any possible rallying momentum left by the Beavers. Haylie Biever played her heart out by making 31 saves on 33 shots in the contest. Midland picks up win number seven this year versus Minot State, both regular season and postseason combined. All-time, it is the Warriors 14th win over the Beavers. That puts a wrap for the Beavers at the WMCH Conference Tournament. Up next is a trip to St. Louis for the 2024 ACHA National Tournament, where they hope to push forward in a return to the championship game. The festivities start March 13 and run through the 17th.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL
MARSHALL, Minn. (MSU) – The Minot State offense put on a ball-movement clinic on the road Friday, collecting 11 assists on 16 made shots, but the Beavers fell to the host Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 72-53 in NSIC action. The Beavers (19-8 overall, 14-7 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Michael Jok, who had 15 points. Connor Hollenbeck tacked on 12 points and Khari Broadway helped out with 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Led by Broadway’s three offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in nine second-chance points. Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 32-19 heading into halftime. Southwest Minnesota State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 41-21 advantage before Minot State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Broadway’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 41-29 with 14:50 to go in the contest. Southwest Minnesota State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 72-53. Minot State capitalized on seven Southwest Minnesota State turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers. The Beavers play at Sioux Falls today.

MSU WOMENS BASKETBALL
MARSHALL, Minn. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s basketball team got a 29-point performance from the bench, but fell 78-61 to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on the road Friday in NSIC play. The Beavers (9-21ovetall, 6-15 NSIC) had two players score in double figures, led by Maya Aguilar, who had 16 points. Sydney Gustavsson added 14 points and Lorelei McIver added eight points and three steals. After falling behind 10-4, Minot State went on a 5-0 run with 1:43 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 10-9. Southwest Minnesota State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Beavers down 13-11 entering the second quarter. The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 30-26 halftime deficit. Minot State’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Beavers faced a 55-45 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint. Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 78-61. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 11 of its 16 total points.

MSU SOFTBALL
TOPEKA, Kan. (MSU) – Taryn Bennett blasted a 3-run homer in the opener for Minot State and Brooklyn Morrison added a 2-run homer for the Beavers in their second game on Friday in the Washburn Invitational. Despite the offensive fireworks, Minot State (5-5 overall) still dropped both games, losing 12-7 to Emporia State to start the day and falling 7-2 to Pittsburg State in the Beavers second game of the day.
EMPORIA STATE 12, MINOT STATE 7
Minot State got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Beavers fell to the Emporia State Hornets 12-7 Friday. Sophomore Kierra Fournier (2-1) got the ball to start for Minot State (5-4) and took the loss. Senior Gabi Dawyduk was a bright spot for the Beavers, starting the ballgame and throwing four innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits, with three walks and one strikeout. Senior Taryn Bennett led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBI. Dawyduk put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and an RBI. Sophomore Anna LaCount also chipped in, going 2-for-4 for Minot State with a double and an RBI. Trailing 10-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Minot State scored twice in the inning on run-scoring doubles from senior Kilee Fehd and LaCount. The Beavers deficit grew to 12-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. Minot State scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Bennett, scoring sophomore Sara Van Wickler and junior Abby Lohse, which brought the score to 12-5 in favor of the Hornets. Minot State held the Hornets off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 12-7 in the sixth. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
PITTSBURG STATE 7, MINOT STATE 2
Senior Brooklyn Morrison went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Minot State Beavers in a 7-2 loss to the No. 18 Pittsburg State Gorillas on Friday. Junior Reegan Floyd (1-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (5-5). Morrison led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Junior Abby Lohse put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double. The Beavers were trailing 7-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State plated two runs when Morrison left the yard with Lohse aboard. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.
Minot State is back in action playing Central Missouri and Washburn today in the tournament.

UND HOCKEY
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Sophomore forward Jackson Blake struck for five points to help No. 4/5 North Dakota roll to a 6-0 win over Minnesota Duluth on Friday night from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. The sophomore had his fingerprints all over the victory for UND (21-8-2, 12-6-1 NCHC), scoring a goal and dishing out five assists to become the first NoDak player with five points in a game since Collin Adams did it on Mar. 12, 2021 against Miami in the NCHC Quarterfinals. Blake wasn’t alone in recording a strong offensive night for the hosts, as Cameron Berg (2G, 1A), Riese Gaber (1G, 1A) and Jake Livanavage (2A) each also tallied multiple points in the largest victory over Minnesota Duluth (10-16-4, 6-12-1 NCHC) since an 8-2 win on Mar. 11, 2005. Ludvig Persson was strong between the pipes as well, finishing with 17 saves to notch his fourth shutout of the season and improve to 18-8-2 this season. NoDak jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it with a trio of goals in the opening 20 minutes to grab a 3-0 advantage. Blake struck just 65 seconds into the contest with his 18th tally of the season and fifth on the power play through a great Jackson Kunz screen before Jayden Perron increased the advantage to 2-0 just three minutes later a breakaway. With the period dwindling down, Gaber increased the lead to 3-0 with a rocket from the top of the circle in the final period of the stanza to send the hosts to the locker room with the three-goal advantage. Berg took over in the middle stanza, striking for a pair of goals to build a 5-0 lead. The junior blasted home his team-leading eighth power play marker of the year to make it 4-0 before Blake’s great individual effort led to a perfect pass for a one-time goal by Berg to give the West Fargo, N.D., native his third game of the season with multiple tallies and a 5-0 lead after 40. Owen McLaughlin added the finishing touches on the victory early in the third period, as Blake picked up the secondary assist to give him a five-point night while Kunz’s primary helper saw every forward in the top-6 record at least a point as UND polished off the 6-0 win. North Dakota goes for the weekend and season sweep over Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night at 6:07 p.m. from the Ralph.

WILD-OILERS
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Matt Boldy scored a twice as the Minnesota Wild beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Friday night. Jonas Brodin and Mats Zuccarello also scored for the Wild, who are 6-1-1 in their last eight games. Filip Gustavsson stopped 41 shots to help Minnesota pull two points behind St. Louis for the second wild card in the Western Conference. Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman had goals for the Oilers, who have lost two in a row but are 28-7-1 in their last 36 games. Calvin Pickard finished with 16 saves.

TIMBERWOLVES-BUCKS
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 13 rebounds to help the Milwaukee Bucks surge out of the All-Star break with a 112-107 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. Minnesota dropped into a tie with Oklahoma City for the Western Conference lead at 39-17. The Thunder routed Washington 147-106 earlier Friday. Anthony Edwards made three 3-pointers in the final 1:58 to give the Wolves a late chance after falling behind by 17 points late in the third quarter, but Damian Lillard iced it for the Bucks with a pullup 21-footer with 10.3 seconds left for the five-point lead. Malik Beasley scored all 14 of his points in the third, when the Bucks outscored the Wolves 36-13. Karl-Anthony Towns (22 points, 14 rebounds) and Rudy Gobert (12 points, 19 rebounds) helped the Wolves build a 32-14 second-chance points advantage, but their sloppy third quarter was too much to overcome. The Wolves, who played their first of seven straight home games, showed the dreaded post-break rust for most of the game. The Timberwolves host Brooklyn today.
