MINOTAUROS
MINOT, ND – It took overtime on Saturday, but the Minot Minotauros earned a split of their series in St. Cloud with a 5-4 win over the Norsemen. John Emmons scored the game winner four minutes into the extra period. The Tauros trailed 3-1 after the second period with only Ian Spencer finding the back of the net for Minot. The Tauros would turn the tables in the third period outscoring the Norsemen 3-1. John Emmons tallied his first of the night early in the third, Will Dawson would score with just over a minute remaining, and Joel Lehtinen tied the game at 4-4 with 23-seconds remaining. Brady James made 23 saves on 27 St. Cloud attempts. The Tauros remain atop the NAHL Central Division, but their lead is shrinking. The Bismarck Bobcats winning streak extended to eight last night with a 2-0 shutout at North Iowa. Minot’s lead is down to seven points.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL
BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – The 19th-ranked Minot State men’s basketball team got a 33-point performance from the bench on the way to an 87-53 win over the Mary Marauders on the road Saturday in NSIC action. The Beavers (18-4 overall, 13-3 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Ben Bohl, who had 19 points. Khari Broadway added 12 points, six assists and two steals and Caleb Van De Griend chipped in as well with 10 points and nine rebounds off of the bench. The Minot State offense was very productive from downtown, making 11 threes on 23 attempts. Jaxon Gunville was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining three treys in the contest. With those three 3s, Gunville broke the NCAA Division II-era career record for 3s made, now with 192 in his career which breaks the old record of 190 held by Thomas Korf. Gunville is also No. 2 all-time. The Minot State defense held Mary shooters to just 32.1 percent from the field. The Beavers also kept Zyon Smith to 3-of-13 shooting and seven points in the game.
After jumping out to a 24-18 advantage, Minot State went on a 14-0 run with 5:14 left in the first half, culminating in a bucket from Bohl, to increase its lead to 38-18. The Beavers then added three points to that lead by the end of the period and entered halftime with a 46-23 advantage. Minot State relied on its three-point shooting in the period, knocking down eight shots to account for 24 of its 46 points. Following intermission, Minot State kept widening that lead, expanding it to 52-27 before going on a 7-0 run, finished off by Van De Griend’s layup, to grow the lead to 59-27 with 16:16 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 87-53 win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 24 of its 41 points in the lane.

MSU WOMENS BASKETBALL
BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s basketball team got a 21-point performance from the bench, but fell 80-47 to the Mary Marauders on the road Saturday in NSIC action. Jaime Skeggs led the Beavers (8-17 overall, 5-11 NSIC) with seven points, six rebounds and two steals. Lorelei McIver also added nine points and two steals and Emily Srejma helped out with 10 points off the bench. Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 24-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 42-26 halftime deficit. After intermission, Minot State cut its deficit to 45-30 before going on a 7-0 run to trim its deficit to 45-37 with 6:41 to go in the third. Mary countered and stretched its lead to 61-39 heading into the fourth. Minot State’s bench made the most of its minutes in the period, as non-starters totaled five of the team’s 13 third-quarter points. Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 80-47. Minot State took advantage of its opportunities in the post, scoring six of its eight points in the paint.

MSU MENS HOCKEY
ALBERT LEA, MN. (MSU) – Just like Friday night, it was another good day for the Minot State men’s hockey team. They were back in southern Minnesota for the second game of a back-to-back with the Waldorf Warriors. Once again, it was the Beavers cruising along for the ride. The No. 1 Beavers (26-5-0) let nothing get past them with another shutout effort as Minot State finished with the 7-0 win over Waldorf (3-23-3). Through 10 minutes of the first period, the Warriors found themselves weathering the storm. That was until the Beavers broke through with the ice breaker at 11:00 of the first period. Nearly two and a half minutes later, Minot doubled their lead to 2-0 going into the locker room. It was until the second period when the Beavers would take full control of the entire game with five goals in the middle 20-minute frame. Minot opened with four goals halfway through the period, with the fourth one coming at 10:00 on the dot. The Beavers capped their goal scoring efforts with one more for good measure at 18:26. There was no scoring in the third, thus leaving 7-0 as the final. Both teams will not meet again for the rest of 2023-24. Minot State not only sweeps the weekend set, but they also get the regular season series with a perfect 4-0-0 record versus the Warriors.
Minot State was clicking offensively yet again. Colby Joseph had a breakout game himself, as he tallied his 11th and 12th goals of the season. Reid Arnold found the back of the net for the 19th time to keep ahold of the team lead in goals. Carter Barley picked up his 16th, while Joey Moffatt scored another one on the weekend to bring his total to nine. Ryan Monias figured into the offense with his second career collegiate goal. Logan Rands provided a boost from the back end by hitting twine for his fifth of the year. Brayden Pawluk and Jay Buchholz were masterful in distributing the puck. Pawluk had three assists, while Buchholz contributed two other helpers. Tre Sortland got the nod again, who now has consecutive starts in net for the first time this season. He tracked down all seven shots from Waldorf and turned them into saves. The Beavers will continue a long road trip into next weekend. They travel to St. Louis for a series with the Maryville Saints, who they have yet to meet with since affiliation started with MSU Athletics. Both teams will square off on February 9 and 10.

MSU SOFTBALL
MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Junior Abbey Kelley collected four RBIs to help propel the Minot State Beavers past the Providence Argonauts 12-3 in the final game of the day at the 2024 Bubble Invite softball tournament on Saturday. Sophomore Calley Olson (1-0) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State (3-0 overall). The right-hander went five innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on six hits. Kelley went 3-for-3 with a double and two walks in addition to her four RBIs for the Beavers. Senior Taryn Bennett put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Senior Izzy Penner also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double, two walks and an RBI.

MSU TRACK & FIELD
FARGO, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State’s senior hurdler Nathan Trujillo-Aragon led the way Saturday for the Beavers as he broke his own school record in the men’s 60-meter hurdles as Minot State wrapped up a solid weekend of competition at the Bison Open hosted by North Dakota State. Trujillo-Aragon qualified for the finals in the event with a new NCAA Division II-era record in the 60-meter hurdles of 8.41 seconds, breaking his own record of 8.46 seconds he ran last season. Aragon-Trujillo finished sixth in the finals in 8.44 seconds. His was one of three records on the weekend as Bailey Wride and Sidra Sadowsky led the way with a record each Friday night, with Wride finishing 3rd in the women’s 600 meters in a record time of 1 minute, 38.52 seconds, and Sadowsky racing to a record in the women’s 1,000 meters with a third-place finish in 3:01.75. Wride broke the old NCAA D-II record of 1:38.81 clocked by Whitney Hanson in 2020, while Sadowsky broke Abigail McGee’s record in the 1,000 of 3:04.84, also clocked in 2020. The Minot State track and field teams are back in action next weekend as they head to South Dakota for the South Dakota State Indoor Classic on Friday and Saturday.

MSU WOMENS WRESTLING
DES MOINES, Iowa (MSU) – Haleigh Lematta finished fourth for the Beavers, leading the way for the Minot State women’s wrestling team which wrapped up its regular season Saturday at the Grand View Open. Lematta was one of three Minot State ladies to place as teammates Julie Petryna and Keela Kary each finished fifth in their respective weight classes. Lematta was fourth at 143 pounds as she won three straight consolation-bracket matches and finished the day 5-2 overall. She had a victory by pin in 4 minutes, 44 seconds over Sioux Fall’s Ciana Grate in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third-place match. Petryna finished fifth at 116 pounds as she went 4-2 on the day, winning three matches by technical fall and the fifth-place match by forfeit over Rodiat Adeduntan of Iowa Central Community College. Kary finished fifth at 130 pounds as she also went 4-2, picking up a win by pin in 2:15 over Rachel Burns of Central Christian College in the championship quarterfinals, and taking home a forfeit victory over Willow Dubois of Baker in the fifth-place match. While they led the way, the Beavers also got victories from Bella Hernandez at 130 pounds, who won three matches by pin, Skye Shelmerdine at 116 pounds, who earned a win by pin, Jazmin Gorder and Trinity Boivin at 123 pounds, who each earned a win by pin, Emily Hill at 136 pounds, who picked up a technical fall victory, and Madison Parsons at 191 pounds, who earned a win by decision. Minot State looks to carry the momentum from a strong showing in its season finale into the postseason at the NCWWC Regional Tournament at the end of February in Denton, Texas.

UND HOCKEY
OXFORD, Ohio (UND) – No. 2 North Dakota polished off a weekend sweep over Miami with a 4-1 victory on Saturday night from Steve Cady Arena in Oxford, Ohio. With the victory, UND (20-6-2, 11-4-1 NCHC) extends its regulation unbeaten streak to 21 games to match the program’s record set back in 2006-07 and will remain in first place in the NCHC standings heading into the scheduled off weekend. Head Coach Brad Berry also recorded his 200th win behind the bench at North Dakota, becoming the fourth coach in program history to achieve the mark. Defenseman Logan Britt carried the load offensively from the backend, scoring a pair of goals for the first time in his career in the victory and finished the weekend with a trio of tallies. Forwards Cameron Berg and Dylan James also added goals, with Berg notching the go-ahead tally in the first period to give the Fighting Hawks the lead for good and James sealing the victory with an empty netter in the late moments of the third. Senior goaltender Ludvig Persson shined in the finale, stopping 33-of-34 in the victory to finish 4-0-0 against his former team during the regular season. The Swede was at his best in the middle period with 16 stops, including a save on a breakaway to keep UND in front. North Dakota will enjoy an open weekend in the schedule before heading back on the road to Colorado College for a series beginning on Friday, Feb. 16 at 8:00 p.m. (CT) from Ed Robson Arena in Colorado Springs, Colo.

UND MENS BASKETBALL
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – With 0.4 seconds left in the first half, Tyree Ihenacho had shot a deep three that went in. After further review, the basket did not count. But at the end of the game, with the score tied at 58, Ihenacho drove the ball down the court, making a game winning play as he found Amar Kuljuhovic, who took the bounce pass and converted on the game winning layup to put North Dakota up 60-58 with 2.6 seconds left. NDSU got one last look but a three was off the mark as the Fighting Hawks won a hard-fought game at the Betty. Ihenacho led the Fighting Hawks with 15 points, while Kuljuhovic scored 11 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double. Tsotne Tsartsidze also scored in double-figures with ten points.
Tsartsidze and B.J. Omot gave NoDak a quick 6-0 lead with threes to start the game. But NDSU followed with a 13-3 run that gave them a 13-9 lead. Treysen Eaglestaff made a three for the green and white in that stretch, making 20 straight games with a three pointer for the sophomore sharpshooter. He is the first player in the Division I era to make at least one three in 20 consecutive games. The Bison had the upper hand through most of the first half, and each time UND made a run NDSU would respond and keep the home team at bay. The final three points of the first half went to the Fighting Hawks, courtesy of a layup from Ihenacho and a free throw from Kuljuhovic. NoDak got the last shot of the first half, which Ihenacho was unable to get off in time and NDSU led 30-25 going into intermission.
Baskets were hard to come by for either side at the start of the second half, the first coming off a steal by Eaglestaff, who took it in for a breakaway dunk. While NoDak made it a one possession game, once again NDSU had an answer. With 7:55 to go, Andrew Morgan converted a three point play for the Bison to make it a nine point game at 53-44. But this time, UND had an answer with a layup from Tsartsidze, followed by a posterizing dunk from Omot and two foul shots from Eli King to make it a 53-50 affair. With 2:59 to go, Kuljuhovic drew a flagrant foul and brought UND back within one point at 55-54 after converting on two foul shots. Tsartsidze converted a layup on the subsequent possession to put UND up 56-55, the first lead for the home team since the 15:36 mark of the first half at 6-4.
Morgan tied the game at 58 with 1:02 left, and with nine seconds to go had a chance to put NDSU back ahead at the line with a one and one. He missed the first shot and the orange sphere pinballed around before finding the arms of Kuljuhovic. The big man ran down the floor and Ihenacho found him for the game winning basket. The Bison had one last look after advancing the ball into the frontcourt out of the timeout, but a three-point shot from Jacari White would not go as the Fighting Hawks held on. The Fighting Hawks will be back at the Betty next week for games Thursday against Omaha and Saturday against Kansas City.

NDSU WOMENS BASKETBALL
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (NDSU) – Elle Evans netted a career-high 33 points to help lift the North Dakota State women’s basketball team past North Dakota, 101-85, in front of 2,913 fans at Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Saturday afternoon. With the win, NDSU improves to 12-9 (6-2 Summit) on the season. Under fifth-year head coach Jory Collins, the Bison move to 9-1 against North Dakota (7-15, 3-6 Summit) dating back to 2019-20. Evans led the way for NDSU with a career-high 33 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the field and 11-of-12 from the free throw line. The Edwardsville, Ill., native also snatched a game-high 10 rebounds to log her third double-double of the season. Her 33 points rank tied for the eighth-most in a single-game in NDSU history and marked her fourth game in the last five with at least 20 points. Heaven Hamling also reached double digits in scoring for the third straight game with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field. Abby Schulte handed out a team-best six assists with seven points, while Avery Koenen added in nine points off the bench.
As a team, the Bison netted 100 or more points for the second time this season after scoring 112 against Jamestown on Nov. 9. NDSU shot 47.8 percent (32-67) from the field and 81.8 percent (27-33) from the free throw line with all 10 players reaching the scoring column. The Bison scored 23 points off of turnovers and the bench added in 30 points. After holding a one-point edge after the first quarter, 17-16, NDSU captured momentum putting together a 19-4 run in the second frame spanning over five minutes to increase its lead to 38-20 after Miriley Simon drilled a three-pointer with 4:22 to play in the quarter. The Bison led at the intermission, 47-38. The Bison used an 8-1 run in the third quarter to push their lead into double digits, 58-48, after Evans connected on a jumper at the 5:48 mark. The Fighting Hawks responded chipping the edge back down to two, 64-62, after Kacie Borowicz delivered a layup with 1:38 on the clock. NDSU answered back in the fourth frame with eight straight points to increase its lead to 82-66 following a layup from Koenen with 6:30 to play. The Bison went on to close out the rest of the time to earn the 101-85 victory. NDSU will be back in action at Kansas City on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.

TWINS-SIGINGS
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – The Minnesota Twins added a veteran bat on Friday, agreeing to a one-year contract with Carlos Santana that is worth $5.25 million. A person familiar with the deal confirmed the move to the AP on condition of anonymity because it was pending a physical. Santana, who turns 38 in April, played for Pittsburgh and Milwaukee last year, batting .240 with 23 homers and 86 RBIs in 146 games. The first baseman/designated hitter was traded to the Brewers on July 27. The addition of Santana could help replace some of the offensive production that Minnesota lost when it traded second baseman Jorge Polanco to Seattle on Monday. The switch-hitting Polanco batted .255 with 14 homers and 48 RBIs in 80 games last season. The Twins are looking to go back to the playoffs for the fifth time in eight years. They won the AL Central in 2023 and swept Toronto in the wild-card round before they were eliminated by Houston in their AL Division Series. Minnesota also has Alex Kirilloff and Jose Miranda at first, but they have been hampered by injuries and inconsistency. The move puts Santana back in the AL Central after he made his debut with Cleveland in 2010. He spent 10 of his first 11 years in the majors with his first big league franchise. Santana made the AL All-Star team in 2019, batting .281 with 34 homers and a career-best 93 RBIs in 158 games. He also hit 34 homers for Cleveland in 2016. Santana is a .242 hitter with 301 homers and 1,011 RBIs in 1,930 games, also playing for Kansas City, Philadelphia and Seattle.
The Minnesota Twins claimed right-hander Daniel Duarte off waivers Friday from the Texas Rangers, who had acquired the reliever just last month in a cash trade with the Cincinnati Reds. The 27-year-old Duarte had a 3.69 ERA in 31 appearances with a .211 opponent batting average spanning five stints for the Reds last season. He also had a 3.34 ERA in 32 appearances for Triple-A Louisville. Originally signed by the Rangers out of Mexico in 2013, Duarte missed most of the 2022 season with an elbow injury and finished 2023 on the injured list with shoulder trouble. To make room for Duarte on their 40-man roster, the Twins designated right-hander Ryan Jensen for assignment. Jensen was claimed off waivers from the Miami Marlins last month.
