TWINS-NATIONALS

WASHINGTON (AP) — Eight days ago, the Minnesota Twins were baseball’s hottest team and winners of 17 of 20 games. After Monday night’s 12-3 loss at the Washington Nationals, the same club was mired in a seven-game slide so miserable that it sparked a players-only meeting. Carlos Correa hit a two-run homer, the bright spot in another sluggish outing for an offense that has been the primary culprit, scoring only 12 runs during Minnesota’s free fall to within a game of the .500 mark. Against soft-tossing Nats starter Mitchell Parker, manager Rocco Baldelli said the Twins (24-23) simply weren’t reacting. Baldelli said he’s held two or three postgame talks already during a year that also included an earlier five-game slide, and is hesitant to conduct more because “it starts to get drowned out.” He approved of the players’ decision.

VIKINGS-JEFFERSON

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings have one major piece of roster management remaining on their agenda before the regular season: signing superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson to a contract extension. Without a new deal in place, Jefferson was absent on Monday when the Vikings held their first of 10 allowable organized team activities, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the club was not making details public. Tuesday’s on-field drills were scheduled to be open to reporters. The Vikings are still in the voluntary phase of the spring sessions, so Jefferson is not obligated to be in the building. Only minicamp from June 4-6 is mandatory. Jefferson, the 2022 NFL Offensive Player of the Year whose 5,899 receiving yards are the most in league history through a player’s first four seasons, also chose last year to work out away from team headquarters during the offseason. He took part in minicamp and was full go for training camp despite the lack of a new deal after negotiations between the Vikings and his agency began last spring.

Progress was made, and general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah said later the two sides got “unbelievably close,” but talks were tabled once the regular season arrived. There was little urgency then, but now Jefferson has entered the final year of his rookie deal. Adofo-Mensah said last month that negotiations were ongoing with “great dialogue” between the two sides. They paused talks so both the agency, William Morris Endeavor, and the team could focus on preparations for the NFL draft. “We have our process, and either way, whenever we sign him, we want Justin to have his whole week. You know that friend that has a birthday that takes the month? I think Justin would deserve his whole month if we signed a contract, to celebrate it,” Adofo-Mensah said. “So you know, we’re excited to work toward it. We’re going to keep going. You can’t have all these plans where you talk about all these visions and not talk about the king linchpin, so we’re going to keep working toward that end goal.”

Amon-Ra St. Brown and the Detroit Lions struck the latest big-money deal for a wide receiver last month with a contract worth about $120 million over four years with $77 million guaranteed. That same week, the Philadelphia Eagles reached a $96 million extension with receiver A.J. Brown with $84 million guaranteed that set a new high for the position. Brown’s annual average value of $32 million is also the league leader for receivers, according to figures compiled by Over The Cap.

TWINS-GUARDIANS

CLEVELAND (AP) — Will Brennan hit a three-run homer off Jhoan Duran with two outs in a wild ninth inning, giving the Cleveland Guardians a 5-2 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. The inning appeared to be over one batter earlier when Andrés Giménez was called out at second while advancing on a wild pitch, but a crew-chief initiated video review ruled him safe. Josh Naylor was intentionally walked for Duran (0-2) to face Brennan. Brennan saw a first-pitch curveball and belted it over the wall in right, completing a three-game series sweep by the AL Central-leading Guardians. Minnesota had trailed 2-1 with two outs and no one on base in the ninth, but pushed across the tying run without a hit against All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase (3-1). The Twins, who have lost a season-high six straight, were outscored 19-8 in the series at Progressive Field.

Twins: RHP Pablo López (4-3, 3.93 ERA) faces Nationals LHP Mitchell Parker (2-2, 3.09 ERA) as Minnesota continues its road trip today.

WOLVES-NUGGETS

DENVER (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves reached the Western Conference finals brimming with talent, trust and tenacity after staging the biggest Game 7 comeback since the NBA began tracking play-by-play data 28 years ago. The Wolves trailed the Denver Nuggets by 15 points at halftime Sunday night and by 20 points just over a minute into the third quarter. With the crowd rocking Ball Arena, the Timberwolves didn’t flinch. They doubled down on their dogged defense and roared back for the most monumental victory in the franchise’s 35-year history. They did it behind a terrific transition game and an unwavering superstar in Anthony Edwards for a stunning 98-90 victory over the reigning NBA champions. The Wolves will face the Dallas Mavericks beginning Wednesday night at Target Center.

MINOTAUROS

BLAINE, MN (MINOTUAROSHOCKEY.COM) – It was a heartbreaking scene on the ice after the final buzzer. Minot Minotauros goalie Brady James down on one knee in his crease, Tauros players with arms around each other as the tears fell. Then Captain Trevor Stachowiak led the Tauros down the handshake line for the final time. Despite a commanding 47-32 shot advantage, the Tauros fell 6-2 to the Maryland Black Bears in Game Two of the Robertson Cup semi-finals, bringing their playoff quest to a disappointing end. They fought hard and competed to the final whistle, but they were unable to find the back of the net enough to force a Game 3.

Unlike Friday night, the Tauros were able to keep up with the Black Bears stride-for-stride from the first puck drop and through
most of the night. But it was Maryland breaking through on the power play in the first period. They got out in transition before Matthew Croxall fired a cross-ice pass to Jeremi Tremblay for the one-timer. The Tauros tied the game up just over three minutes into the second period courtesy of a nifty move by Nick Sewecke. Off an offensive zone faceoff, the Tauros won the puck back to Colby Woogk at the blue line. He teed up a wicked slapshot that Black Bears goalie Owen Lepak saved but could not corral the rebound. Sewecke crashed down to grab the puck, shrugged off a check, and spun 270 degrees to sweep a backhand under a diving Lepak. Unfortunately, the Tauros could not take the next step and grab their first lead of the series. Just over six minutes later, Maryland’s Dylan Gordon swept down the left wing right off the faceoff unchecked. He cut in just above the goal line and zipped out front untouched. He was able to tuck the puck past Tauros goalie Brady James to restore the Black Bear’s one-goal lead. Then less than four minutes later, the Tauros found themselves short two men as both Will Dawson and Chad Muller were sent off for two minutes. While Dawson was called for an obvious hooking, Muller was called for head contact during a scrum in the crease. Regardless of what happened, the Tauros were staring down the barrel of two full minutes down two men.

The Black Bears wasted little time setting up their offense in the Tauros’ defensive zone. The two players at the blue line swept the puck back and forth, forcing James to keep moving side-to-side in his crease before Tremblay unleashed a rocket through traffic that James could not see to make it 3-1 Maryland. Tremblay’s second goal of the night proved to be the game-winner despite an onslaught of chances for the Tauros in the third. In fact, it was the Black Bears who broke through first in the period despite the volume of shots coming from Minot as Samuel Stitz made it 4-1 with just over seven minutes to play. Cayden Casey gave the Tauros a lifeline just over a minute later, but the Tauros could never get closer than two goals down. Then Maryland scored two empty-net goals, thanks in part to some unlucky bounces, leading to a 6-2 score line that did not tell the entire story. The Tauros not only outshot the Black Bears in the game, but they put 18 shots on goal in the third period. They simply could not best Lepak. It was a heartbreaking ending for a Tauros team that set so many records. Yet for coming up short in the ultimate goal, it was an amazing season full of memorable moments.

TWINS-GUARDIANS

CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez homered to end a 12-pitch at-bat and had three RBIs and Logan Allen pitched six strong innings, sending the Cleveland Guardians to an 11-4 romp on Saturday night over the Minnesota Twins, who lost their fifth straight and remained in an offensive funk. Ramírez set the tone with his two-run homer in the first inning off Bailey Ober (4-2) and added an RBI double on the same night the Guardians celebrated their All-Star third baseman with a bobblehead giveaway. The AL Central-leading Guardians moved a season-best 12 games over .500. Allen (5-2) held the Twins to five singles and hasn’t given up a run in his last 12 innings over two starts. The left-hander walked one and struck out seven. The Twins are scuffling after winning 17 of 20. They scored four runs in the ninth to avoid being shut out for the third time in five days, and have been outscored 28-7 during their five-game slide.

UP NEXT
Twins RHP Chris Paddack (4-2, 4.89 ERA) makes his first career start against Cleveland in the series finale against Guardians RHP Tanner Bibee (2-1, 4.34).

Uelmen is the fourth roster addition announced by North Dakota since the conclusion of the 2023-24 season, joining fellow guards Reggie Thomas and Mier Panoam as well as forward Dariyus Woodson.

UND HOCKEY

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – The University of North Dakota can once again boast the title of best fans in college hockey, as the program once again paced the country in multiple attendance categories. For the 10th straight year, UND and Ralph Engelstad Arena led the nation in average attendance with a total of 11,612 per game while also sitting atop the total attendance number for the 13th straight year with 278,677 total fans. UND was one of only six programs to average at over 100 percent capacity, finishing with 20 sellout crowds in 24 home contests. The 278,677 total attendance number is the fifth highest in NCAA history and the highest in Ralph Engelstad Arena history since the building opened in 2001-02. It was also a dominant season on home ice for NoDak, finishing with a 19-4-1 mark and included zero regulation losses in the 2024 calendar year. Not only was the 11,612 average attendance number the highest in college hockey, it also ranks 38th in the entire world for hockey – sitting behind 31 NHL franchises and six professional European clubs.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State men’s basketball program has added transfer forward Patrick Bath, NDSU head coach David Richman announced Friday. Bath comes to NDSU from Drake University, where he redshirted as a freshman in the 2023-24 season for the Missouri Valley Conference champions. The 6-foot-9 forward has four seasons of eligibility remaining. Bath is originally from Fargo, but attended high school and graduated from Totino-Grace in Fridley, Minn. He helped Totino-Grace win back-to-back Minnesota Class AAA state championships, averaging 16.4 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior in 2022-23. With seven returning players, three high school signees, and five incoming transfers, the NDSU roster for the 2024-25 season now stands at 15.

TWINS-GUARDIANS

CLEVELAND (AP) — José Ramírez homered with two outs in the eighth inning, sending the Cleveland Guardians to a 3-2 win on Friday night over the Minnesota Twins in a game featuring the first infield shift violation this season. Ramírez connected for his 10th homer on a 2-1 pitch from Jhoan Duran (0-1), driving it into the seats in right field to delight a Progressive Field crowd that came out to see Cleveland’s new uniforms and fireworks. It was the 226th career homer for Ramírez, moving him into a tie for fourth in club history with Hall of Famer Earl Averill. Only Jim Thome (337), Albert Belle (242) and Manny Ramirez (236) have more. The Twins lost their fourth straight and had several calls go against them, including Duran’s first two pitches to Ramírez. “It’s frustrating for our players when late in the game every meaningful call did go against us,” said Twins manager Rocco Baldelli. “The guy who hit the home run (Ramírez), he’s hit a lot of big home runs, he’s a great player. But when the first two pitches in the at-bat are strikes and they both get called balls, that’s hard to swallow.” The Twins stumbled into Cleveland. They were swept at home in a three-game series earlier this week by the New York Yankees, who shut out them out in the final two games and outscored Minnesota 14-1.

UP NEXT
Twins RHP Bailey Ober (4-1, 3.77 ERA) goes for his fifth win in six starts, matching up against Guardians LHP Logan Allen (4-2, 5.56) today in the second of a three game series.

TWINS-YANKEES

Minneapolis (AP) — Clarke Schmidt cruised to a career-long eight shutout innings after Anthony Volpe led off the game with a home run that sparked a three-run first inning, and the New York Yankees finished a three-game sweep with a 5-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. Schmidt (5-1) scattered a double and two singles without a walk while striking out eight batters and winning his third consecutive start. The 2017 first-round draft pick, who has allowed three runs or fewer in each of his nine starts this season, lowered his ERA from 2.95 to 2.49 while throwing a career-high 103 pitches. His previous long was 6 2/3 innings, matched in his most recent outing at Tampa Bay on Friday. Gleyber Torres hit two doubles and drove in a run, and Anthony Rizzo, Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo also had RBIs for the Yankees (30-15), who have won 11 of their last 14 games and have the second-best record in the major leagues behind Philadelphia.

TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards flashed seven fingers to the roaring crowd as he walked off for a fourth-quarter timeout during a blowout by the Minnesota Timberwolves. He had that tenacious look of a superstar player refusing to cede to the defending champs all night. Edwards scored 27 points to pull the Timberwolves out of their mid-series slump and deliver a flawless 115-70 victory over the Denver Nuggets on Thursday to force a Game 7 in this roller-coaster matchup. Jaden McDaniels pitched in 21 points and lockdown defense, and Mike Conley had 13 points in his return from injury. Big men Rudy Gobert, Karl-Anthony Towns and Naz Reid combined for 38 rebounds and a relentless effort to keep NBA MVP Nikola Jokic to a relatively quiet 22 points. The Wolves posted the largest winning margin in a postseason game since 2015, when Chicago beat Milwaukee by 54 points in a first-round series clincher, according to Sportradar. The decisive game for a spot in the Western Conference finals is in Denver on Sunday night.

TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS

DENVER (AP) — Anthony Edwards was seeing double everywhere he turned. All by design as the Denver Nuggets doubled the attention on Minnesota’s standout guard. It was yet another wrinkle for the Nuggets, who held Edwards to 18 points — 15 below his average in this series — in their 112-97 win over the Timberwolves on Tuesday night in Game 5. The Nuggets dared anyone not named Edwards to beat them as they took a 3-2 lead in the second-round series with a chance to close out the Timberwolves on Thursday night in Minneapolis. The strategy worked, in part, because Anthony had fewer clear looks at the basket. The Timberwolves were also missing Mike Conley, who was ruled out before the game with soreness in his right Achilles. Karl-Anthony Towns had a solid night despite appearing to tweak his left knee in the first half, finishing with 23 points. Rudy Gobert, too, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

TWINS-YANKEES

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Giancarlo Stanton homered and Carlos Rodón overcame a shaky start and worked six-plus strong innings as the New York Yankees beat the Minnesota Twins 5-1 on Tuesday night. Alex Verdugo added a two-run double for New York, which has won nine of 12. The Yankees continue to thrive in Minnesota where they are 29-15 all-time at Target Field and boast the highest winning percentage of any opponent at the park. Rodón (4-2) allowed a leadoff home run to Ryan Jeffers in the bottom of the first inning and surrendered three hits in the frame. He gave up six hits overall and didn’t walk a batter, finishing with six strikeouts before being lifted following a leadoff single by Carlos Santana in the seventh. The 31-year-old left-hander had retired 11 in a row before Santana’s hit. Twins right-hander Chris Paddack (4-2), who had won three straight starts, surrendered a career high-tying 12 hits and five runs in five innings. Minnesota lost for just the fourth time in 21 games.

UP NEXT
RHP Pablo López (4-2, 3.89 ERA) starts the middle game of the three-game set today for Minnesota. New York will start RHP Marcus Stroman (2-2, 3.80 ERA).

TORONTO (AP) — Carlos Santana hit a three-run home run, Bailey Ober matched his career high by striking out 10 over 6 1/3 shutout innings and the Minnesota Twins won for the 17th time in 20 games by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-1 on Sunday. The Twins have won six consecutive series for the first time since September 2010. Santana homered for the third straight game north of the U.S. border, extending Minnesota’s streak of games in Toronto with at least one home run to 20. The Twins homered in 21 straight games at Kansas City between July 30, 1998, and Aug. 25, 2001. Max Kepler added a two-run double for the Twins, extending his career-best hitting streak to 14 games. The game was scoreless until Kepler reached on a one-out fielding error by Blue Jays third baseman Ernie Clement in the seventh inning. Willi Castro followed with a single and Alex Kirilloff grounded into a fielder’s choice before Santana drilled his seventh home run on a 2-0 pitch from Blue Jays right-hander Alek Manoah. The Twins are off today.

TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Denver Nuggets were far from done after dropping the first two games of the Western Conference semifinals at home in humbling fashion. Nikola Jokic scored 16 of his 35 points in the fourth quarter, and Aaron Gordon had 27 points on 11-for-12 shooting to propel the Nuggets to a series-tying 115-107 victory over the Timberwolves on Sunday night in Game 4 . Jamal Murray had 12 of his 19 points in the third quarter for the derfending champion Nuggets in a momentum carryover from his buzzer-beating swish from behind half court, and the Wolves only had the deficit below double digits in the second half for a total of 3:19. Anthony Edwards scored 44 points in another spectacular performance for Minnesota that set the franchise postseason record, shooting 16 for 25. But despite a 42-31 rebounding edge, the Wolves were beaten at their own game for the second straight time at home. The series goes back to Denver for Game 5 on Tuesday night.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – One day after teammate Jasiah Hambira stole the show for Minot State at the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, it was Ramon Duran’s turn on Saturday. While Duran missed out on the triple-feat accomplished by Hambira of a title, a record, and an NCAA mark, he came within one place of that accomplishment as he doubled up with an NCAA qualifying mark and an all-time Minot State record as runner-up in the men’s 400-meter hurdles at the Championships hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato that concluded Saturday. Duran finished second only to Anthony Collins of MSU, Mankato as the Beaver junior clocked a time of 52.53 seconds in Saturday’s event finals, a career best that also is an NCAA qualifying time that currently ranks him No. 30 in the nation.

Also an All-NSIC performance, as the top 3 finishers in an individual event earn All-NSIC honors, Duran’s race also broke the all-time Minot State record in the event of 52.68 seconds run in 2015 by Tyler Flatland. The Mavericks’ Collins won the event on Saturday in 50.75. Duran’s hurdles effort was one of two records and All-NSIC honors he brought home as he also was part of the Beavers’ 4×400-meter relay quartet that finished second on Saturday to earn All-NSIC honors for Duran, Devontae Daley, Zaccharius Brown, and Hambira. The Beavers finished second in 3:14.78. MSU, Mankato won the relay in 3:12.05.
Minot State’s quartet broke the all-time school record of 3:15.44 run in 1998 by Gabe Iverson, Mike Lunn, Keith Jorgenson, and Trevor Sinclair. The pair of runner-up finishes helped rack up the team points for the Minot State men who finished 10th with 31 points. The Beaver women also added points to their team total on Saturday and finished 12th with 10 points. Host Minnesota State, Mankato won both team titles.

Adding to those awesome performances were middle-distance runners Sidra Sadowsky in the women’s 800 meters, and Peyton Tuhy and Daley in the men’s 800 as all three turned in top-8 finishes and scored for the Beavers. Sadowsky finished 8th in the women’s 800 in a career-best and NCAA Division II school-record time of 2:13.64. She broke her own previous D-II record of 2:16.57 run last season. Tuhy finished 7th in a career-best 1:55.14 in the men’s 800 and Daley was 8th in 1:55.64. Adding another stellar performance on the day was the women’s 4×100 relay team of Summer Krebsbach, De’Andre Cornwall, Tandy Plainichek, and Autumn Wright who broke the all-time school record with a 6th-place finish in 47.76 seconds. The Beaver quartet broke the record of 48.41 run by Sienna Dailey, Allie Helterbran, Dijah Nash, and Mary Roy in 2014.

MINOTAUROS

MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros suffered their first playoff loss of the season on Friday as Kyle Doll scored in overtime and the Bobcats defeated the Tauros 4-3 in Bismarck. Minot led after one period on a goal by Adam Mahler. Bismarck came out of the first intermission and scored three straight before the Tauros responded on tallies by Marray Marvin-Cordes and Trevor Stachowiak. No one scored in the third period, so it went to the extra session where Bismarck would get the win 6:16 into the period. Brady James made 35 saves on 39 attempts by the Cats. Minot leads the best-of-five Central Division Final series 2-1. The Tauros will try to close it out tonight in game four at the VFW Sports Center in Bismarck at 7:15 pm.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – It’s been a debut season to remember, one that just keeps getting better and better for Jasiah Hambira who also keeps getting better and better. Minot State’s freshman jumper, who has broken records all year in the high jump, broke the NSIC record in the event and won his first NSIC Championship with a new career-best effort at the NSIC Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato. Clearing 6 feet, 8.75 inches and 6-9.75 on his first attempt at each height, Hambira distanced himself from the field, then on his third attempt at 7 feet, 0.25 inches, he cleared the bar breaking his own all-time outdoor Minot State record in the event, the NSIC record, and winning his first NSIC Championship. That winning performance broke the NSIC record of 7-feet-even set by Brian Rabenberg of Minnesota State Moorhead way back in 1988. It also broke Hambira’s own all-time outdoor school record of 6-11.75 from last month and is an NCAA qualifying mark that ranks the Beaver freshman No. 11 in the nation currently. The NCAA National Championships will be hosted by Emporia State in Kansas, May 23-25, and Hambira is now poised for a first-ever invitation to nationals. Hambira also becomes only the second Beaver high jumper to eclipse 7 feet, joining Zach Ryan who holds the all-time indoor Minot State record as he cleared 7-1.5 in 2010.

While Hambira’s win set the tone, he was one of two Beavers who earned All-NSIC honors with a stellar performance Friday, and one of three who scored points on the second day of competition. Adding a day to remember was sophomore distance runner Nicole Reeves who earned All-NSIC honors with a top 3 finish in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase as she crushed her own all-time best performance in the event and placed 3rd in 11 minutes, 7.56 seconds – more than 18 seconds faster than her previous best and a performance that will be remembered at Minot State as the fastest ever as she broke the all-time record of 11:21.03 run by Samantha Huether in 2018. Reeves finished third behind NSIC champion Eleni Lovgren of Augustana (10:58.11) and runner-up Mary Goodwin of Bemidji State (11:04.02).

While Hambira and Reeves brought home special honors, the Beavers also got a podium finish and points from senior thrower Samuel Kreins in the shot put as he placed 7th in the event with a throw of 52 feet, 5.25 inches. Tyler Hiatt of Sioux Falls won the event with a mark of 57-7. The points earned by Hambira and Kreins have the Minot State men sitting in 10th place as a team with 12 points after seven of 21 scoring events. On the women’s side, Reeves’ performance scored the Minot State women 6 points as the Beaver ladies are 11th through seven scored events. And the Beavers are poised to add more to their score – and maybe a few more titles and All-NSIC honors after strong showings in several preliminary events Friday.

Another potential Minot State champion is hurdler Ramon Duran who clocked the second-fastest time in the prelims in the men’s 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.72 for a spot in Saturday’s finals. Also advancing to a final on the men’s side are Peyton Tuhy and Devontae Daley who both advanced in the 800 meters as Tuhy clocked a prelim time of 1:57.52 and Daley a 1:59.03. Tuhy’s time was fourth fastest on Friday and Daley ninth best. On the women’s side, both Sidra Sadowsky and De’Andre Cornwall raced their way into a spot in Saturday’s finals as Sadowsky was 6th fastest in the prelims in the 800 meters in 2:17.29 and Cornwall was 6th fastest in the prelims in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.16. Today’s final day of competition gets underway at 11 a.m.

TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Denver Nuggets were simply too determined, too experienced, too proud and too talented to let their flop in the first two games define this series against the surging Minnesota Timberwolves. This is what defending NBA champions do — quiet a raucous crowd, embrace the boos and take the momentum right back. Jamal Murray rebounded from a rough start to the Western Conference semifinals with 24 points to lead the Nuggets on a 117-90 romp Friday night in Game 3 that made the Timberwolves the last team in the NBA to lose this postseason. Nikola Jokic, the three-time league MVP, had 24 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, Michael Porter Jr. scored 21 points and the Nuggets sliced Minnesota’s series lead to 2-1 on the strength of their 14-for-29 shooting from 3-point range. Anthony Edwards had a quiet 19 points to lead the Wolves, who went just 10 for 32 from deep even with a 4-for-5 effort from Karl-Anthony Towns. They failed to get Towns (14 points) enough shots and played slower than they did in the first two games in Denver while falling behind by as many as 34 points. The Nuggets became the 30th team in the history of the NBA playoffs to lose the first two games at home in a best-of-seven series. Five have rallied to win. Game four is Sunday in Minneapolis.

TWINS-BLUE JAYS

TORONTO (AP) — Carlos Santana hit a tiebreaking home run in the fifth inning, Joe Ryan pitched a season-high seven innings and the Minnesota Twins won for the 16th time in 18 games by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 3-2 on Friday night. Carlos Correa had two hits and scored twice as the Twins won for the ninth time in their past 13 games in Toronto. Jose Miranda added an RBI single as the Twins, who successfully brought their lucky sausage across the Canadian border, extended their road winning streak to seven. Santana was struck on the helmet by the sausage as he returned to the dugout following his home run. Ryan (2-2) allowed one run and six hits for his first victory in three starts. He struck out seven and did not give up a walk. Jhoan Duran worked the eighth and Griffin Jax pitched the ninth for his fifth save in seven chances. Isiah Kiner-Falefa had three hits, including his second home run, but the Blue Jays lost for the sixth time in eight games.

UP NEXT
RHP Kevin Gausman (2-3, 3.78 ERA) starts for Toronto today against Twins RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (1-0, 1.74). Gausman has a 6.35 ERA in 11 career games against Minnesota.

TWINS-MARINERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Manny Margot highlighted a five-run first inning for Minnesota with a three-run double off Seattle ace Logan Gilbert, and the Twins coasted to an 11-1 victory over the Mariners to win their fifth consecutive series on Thursday afternoon. Pablo López (4-2) pitched into the seventh with a season-high 10 strikeouts to win his third straight start. Ryan Jeffers and Max Kepler each homered and drove in two runs, Jose Miranda scored three runs on two hits and Margot matched his career high with five RBIs for the Twins (22-15), who won for the 15th time in their last 17 games. Gilbert failed to pitch into the sixth for the first time in eight starts this season. The 2018 first-round draft pick gave up eight runs, the most since he was a rookie in 2021, on nine hits and two walks while finishing five innings. The AL-leading ERA of 1.69 he took into the game rocketed up to 2.94. Pablo López gave up one run on four hits without a walk in 6 1/3 innings, which included a slick catch by shortstop Willi Castro of a line drive that first glanced off the third baseman Miranda’s glove.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – It’s championship time for the Minot State track and field teams as they head to Minnesota State, Mankato this weekend for the NSIC Outdoor Championships. The Beavers compete Friday and Saturday at the Championships, which begin Thursday with the multi-events. Friday’s action begins at 10 a.m. with the women’s 10,000 meters, and Saturday the women’s javelin gets things started at 11 a.m. At stake will be NSIC titles in each event, the team championships, and All-NSIC honors for the top three individual finishers in each event and top two relay teams. And the Beavers head into the weekend with several student-athletes poised to score team points, compete for All-NSIC honors, and possibly bring home NSIC titles.

Leading the way on the men’s side are freshman high jumper Jasiah Hambira and junior hurdler Ramon Duran. Hambira set the all-time Minot State record this spring in the high jump clearing 6 feet, 11.75 inches, an NCAA qualifying mark that ranks him No. 15 in the nation and 2nd in the NSIC heading into the weekend. The men’s high jump will be contested at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Duran, he heads into this weekend No. 3 in the conference in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 53.44 seconds. Preliminaries for the 400 hurdles will be Friday at 4:40 p.m.

While they are poised for potential All-NSIC honors or a title, lurking in the Top 10 and ready for a big weekend are senior thrower Samiel Kreins, who is 9th in the shot put with a mark of 53 feet, 1 inch headed into the Championships, junior distance runner Gabriel Plummer, who also is 9th in 10,000 meters with a time of 34 minutes, 31.94 seconds, and the men’s 4×400 relay team of Zaccharius Brown, Devontae Daley, Duran, and Hambira who have the 4th-fastest time in the NSIC this spring of 3:16.37, which also is an NCAA Division II Minot State school record.

As for the women, sophomore distance runners Nicole Reeves and Emery Smith, junior hurdler De’Andre Cornwall, a junior middle-distance runner Sidra Sadowsky lead the way as all are in position to score team points for the Beavers and ready to make a run at All-NSIC honors or a title, too. Cornwall set the all-time Minot State record in the 100-meter hurdles with an NCAA qualifying time of 14.12 seconds which ranks her No. 42 in the nation in a highly competitive NSIC event where she is 6th in the league. Reigning NCAA National Champion Denisha Cartwright of MSU, Mankato is No. 1 in the NSIC and nation in the event with a time of 12.71 seconds. The women’s 100 hurdles prelims are at 2 p.m. on Friday. As for Reeves, she heads into the weekend No. 5 in the NSIC in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11 minutes, 25.93 seconds. The women’s steeplechase final is at 12:30 p.m. on Friday. Smith heads into the weekend No. 7 in the league in the 10,000 meters with a time of 39:05.86, and Sadowsky has the No. 10 time in the 800 meters of 2:16.59. The women’s 10,000 final is at 10 a.m. on Friday and the 800-meter prelims are at 3:30 p.m. on Friday.

TWINS-MARINERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Carlos Correa and Trevor Larnach hit consecutive home runs for Minnesota in the first inning off Seattle starter George Kirby, and the Twins hung on to beat the Mariners 6-3 and help Chris Paddack win his fourth straight start on Wednesday night. Willi Castro went deep in the second and hit an RBI triple in the fourth that put the Twins in front by three, giving Paddack (4-1) enough fuel to extend his career-long winning streak. The right-hander, who missed most of the previous two seasons recovering from elbow reconstruction, matched his Twins best with 10 strikeouts while pitching into the sixth. He allowed a solo homer to Mitch Garver, the only run against him. The Twins let Paddack throw a season-high 99 pitches, the second-most of his career, before Caleb Thielbar entered for the last two outs in the sixth. WOLVES-CONNELLY

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tim Connelly made his first major move for the Minnesota Timberwolves after about six weeks on the job, a bold get of cenrter Rudy Gobert that was as risky as it was unconventional. Going big has been no small part of this breakthrough season — and dominant start to the playoffs — for the Timberwolves. They take a 2-0 lead over Denver into Game 3 of the second-round series Friday night. “I think when Tim Connelly made that trade, everybody was laughing at him like, ‘What is he doing?’ But he made a great team,” Nuggets center Nikola Jokic said. “I think he deserves the credit for doing that, and of course, the coaching staff are making sure things are working. And I think they are a really dangerous team.”
Jokic and the defending NBA champions knew that well before losing the first two games of this Western Conference semifinal series in humbling fashion to a team, like theirs, that was assembled largely at Connelly’s direction. Over his nine seasons as general manager, the Nuggets found the three-time league MVP Jokic in the second round of the 2014 draft, made good on first-round picks with Jamal Murray (2016) and Michael Porter Jr. (2018) and acquired ace defender Aaron Gordon in a 2021 trade. Connelly also hired Mike Malone as coach in 2015 and watched with pride last summer when his close friend led the club to the franchise’s first title.

After leaving for a new challenge and a big raise to be the president of basketball operations of the long-languishing Timberwolves, Connelly quickly went to work on a roster that featured a dynamic young guard in Anthony Edwards and an athletic big man in Karl-Anthony Towns. The pressing goal of becoming a quality defensive team Connelly shared with his inherited head coach Chris Finch led them to Gobert, who was made available by Utah for the steep price of five first-round draft picks and five players. Never mind that the NBA had become a game driven by athleticism, quickness and long-distance shooting. The Timberwolves were determined to make their pairing of 7-footers work, even after a rough first season for Gobert hampered by the long-term absence of Towns to a severely strained calf muscle. “I just appreciate him believing in himself and his talent and his mind and building this team out for us to have the best chance to win, trusting that we would make this work,” Towns said.

Though his predecessor Gersson Rosas made the call on Edwards with the first overall pick in the 2020 draft that also yielded defensive stalwart Jaden McDaniels, a year after signing an undrafted Naz Reid, Connelly executed another deal that has been vital in this run by acquiring Mike Conley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker for D’Angelo Russell in a three-team swap.
Gobert just won his fourth Defensive Player of the Year award. While he watched from afar to be with his girlfriend for the birth of their son, the Timberwolves stifled and flummoxed the Nuggets in a 106-80 win in Game 2 on Monday. McDaniels, Edwards and Alexander-Walker swarmed the ailing Murray on the perimeter. Towns and Reid made the paint awfully tough for Jokic. The whole league was watching. Former Timberwolves star Kevin Garnett posted on social media that this was the type of defense that could sell tickets, a trail-blazing trait akin to Golden State’s 3-point shooting a decade ago. Jamal Crawford, another former Timberwolves player on the TNT broadcast team, joked during the second quarter that Reid was not supposed to play defense that well as the Sixth Man of the Year award winner.

Just like Connelly and his lieutenants drew it up two years ago? “I could tell you we have these one, three and five-year plans. It’d be a lie,” Connelly said with a laugh before the series began. “In the NBA, there’s fluidity and things you didn’t expect to happen. You look at Denver, we tried to retain some guys we didn’t keep and got very fortunate with Aaron. Every day, especially around the draft or trade deadline and free agency, things change dramatically. We’re really lucky to have these unbelievable talented core pieces and try to build around them and support them.”

The success in Minnesota clearly affirms the value in being patient and sticking to a process, but as for the perceived win for outside-the-box thinking, well, good luck getting Connelly to acknowledge that. “It’s just hypothesis. I’m just guessing. You never know. You make a trade, you sign somebody, you draft somebody, you hope it works,” Connelly said. “So I don’t know. Validation would probably give our group too much credit. But we felt pretty convicted that we had the cultural DNA to be a good team. We thought we had the talent. We knew we had an elite coaching staff. Could we grow up a little bit around the edges? Could we not expose ourselves to so many self-faults and unforced errors? And I think we’ve done that for the most part all season.”

TWINS-MARINERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Josh Rojas and Ty France each hit an RBI single during Seattle’s four-run ninth inning, and the Mariners beat the Minnesota Twins 10-6 on Tuesday night. Cal Raleigh connected for a pinch-hit grand slam in the seventh for Seattle, which has won three of four. Mitch Haniger hit a solo homer in the second and added a sacrifice fly in the ninth. Ryne Stanek (1-0) got two outs for the win after fellow reliever Tayler Saucedo got hurt while covering first base. Andrés Muñoz pitched a scoreless ninth. Minnesota reliever Jorge Alcala (1-1) allowed four runs on four hits, issued two walks and threw a wild pitch during Seattle’s ninth-inning rally. The Twins have lost two of three after their 12-game winning streak. A wild three final innings was highlighted by a clutch swing for Raleigh, who was out of the starting lineup for a rare occasion. Raleigh hit for Seby Zavala against left-hander Steven Okert and drove a hanging slider to the third deck in left at Target Field. Down 6-4 after Raleigh’s homer, Minnesota got a run in the bottom of the seventh and another one in the eighth.

WOLVES-NUGGETS

DENVER (AP) — Denver Nuggets guard Jamal Murray was fined $100,000 by the NBA but avoided a suspension for “throwing multiple objects in the direction of a game official during live play,” the league announced Tuesday. Murray tossed a towel and a heat pack onto the court late in the second quarter of Denver’s 108-80 loss to Minnesota that gave the Timberwolves a 2-0 lead in the Western Conference semifinal series that shifts to Minneapolis this weekend. The Nuggets were frustrated by the officiating as they fell behind by 28 points shortly before halftime. The heat pack toss garnered the most attention as TNT replays showed Murray sitting at the end of Denver’s bench and throwing it onto the court. It slid across the floor as players jockeyed in the lane just before Minnesota’s Karl-Anthony Towns made a layup with 4:41 left in the second quarter. Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope retrieved the heat pack and tossed it aside as the public-address announcer admonished the crowd not to throw any objects onto the court.

Officiating crew chief Marc Davis told a pool reporter after the game that the officials were unaware the object had come from the bench. Otherwise, “we could have reviewed it under the hostile act trigger. The penalty would have been a technical foul.” “We tried to impress upon (the officials) that there’s probably not many fans in the building that have a heat pack. So, it probably had to come from the bench,” Wolves coach Chris Finch said after the game. Finch also said Murray’s actions were “inexcusable and dangerous.”

Murray left the arena without speaking to reporters and Nuggets coach Michael Malone demurred when asked about it after the game, saying he wasn’t aware that his point guard had been the culprit. The Nuggets were off Tuesday. Their next availability is after Wednesday’s practice. Several seconds before he threw the heat pack onto the court, Murray was observed tossing a towel in Davis’ direction. The towel landed at Davis’ heels and somebody sitting on the sideline got up and quickly removed the towel. Davis never noticed.

Murray, bothered by a strained left calf and the Timberwolves’ tenacious defense, shot 3 of 18 in Game 2, finishing with eight points. That poor performance came on the heels of his scoreless first half in Game 1, which was the first time he’s done that in either half of 59 career playoff games.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Ceddanne Rafaela hit the first Red Sox home run in seven games, Rafael Devers added another, and Boston ended Minnesota’s 12-game winning streak by beating the Twins 9-2 on Sunday. Vaughn Grissom and Dominic Smith had two-run doubles, and Boston ended a three-game slide in which it scored just four runs. Ryan Jeffers homered and Trevor Larnach had an RBI single for Minnesota. The Twins’ 12-game winning streak was tied for the second-longest in team history behind a 15-win run in June 1991, the last season Minnesota won the World Series. Boston starter Cooper Criswell, who threw five shutout innings in each of his last two starts, allowed one earned run and struck out five in 4 1/3 innings, but needed 80 pitches to do so. Brennan Bernardino (1-1), the first of five Red Sox relievers, earned the win. Tossing his team-high fifth quality start of the season, Joe Ryan (1-2) allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out five.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – It was a disappointing end to the baseball season for the Beavers on the road Saturday afternoon as Minot State struggled, falling to the No. 12 Augustana Vikings 12-2 despite the efforts of senior Ricky Apodaca, who went 1-for-3 with a double. Sophomore Jonah Prokott (4-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State (15-34 overall, 12-27 NSIC), which saw its season come to an end with the loss. Senior Noah Balandran was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out one. Trailing 10-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning as Miles Iverson and Brent Riddle each had an RBI. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Augustana added two runs to their tally on the way to a 12-2 final.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL-HONORS

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – A strong run at the NSIC Softball Tournament earned a pair of Beaver players All-Tournament Team honors as the league wrapped up its postseason action Saturday. Minot State third baseman Hannah Murray and outfielder Sara Van Wickler each were honored as they were named to the NSIC Softball All-Tournament Team following Saturday’s title game, a 9-0 win by Augustana over Minnesota Duluth. Murray was 4-for-7 at the plate with a double and two runs scored, and she also stole a base for Minot State, which went 2-1 in the tournament and advanced to Friday’s semifinals. Defensively she anchored the Beavers (24-19 overall) with four putouts and nine assists without an error in three games. Van Wickler led the offense going 5-for-10 with three doubles, a home run, and a team-best four RBIs in three games, while also scoring two runs and stealing a base. She also contributed three putouts and an assist from the outfield defensively.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – Brent Riddle led the way with a pair of RBIs in the opener while Ricky Apodaca and Noah Madas each drove in a pair of runs in the nightcap, but it wasn’t enough as the Minot State baseball team dropped both games of an NSIC doubleheader to host Augustana late Friday. The Beavers (15-33 overall, 12-26 NSIC) fell 15-2 win in the first game and lost 13-6 in the nightcap to the Vikings. The two teams meet in a single game at 1 p.m. today in the season finale for Minot State.

GAME 1 | No. 12 Augustana 15, Minot State 2

Junior Brent Riddle put together an outstanding outing at the plate Friday, hitting two home runs, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the No. 12 Augustana Vikings 15-2. Senior Craig Schmich (2-9) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Freshman Conner Meldrim was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one inning, giving up two runs, zero earned, on one hit, with no walks and two strikeouts. Riddle went 2-for-3 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with two RBIs. Senior Mark Ossanna added to Riddle’s awesome power-hitting performance by going 1-for-2 with a double along with one walk. The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Riddle put Minot State on the board with a one-out solo home run off sophomore Ashton Michek. The Vikings then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the fourth. Minot State picked up a run on Riddle’s leadoff home run off of Michek, which tightened the Vikings lead to 3-2. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Augustana added 12 runs to their tally on the way to a 15-2 final.

GAME 2 | No. 12 Augustana 13, Minot State 6

Sophomore Colton Bagshaw racked up three hits, but the Minot State Beavers fell to the No. 12 Augustana Vikings 13-6 Friday. Senior Trevyn Badger (1-7) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Freshman Ayden Sauerbrei was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 innings, giving up one run on five hits, with no walks and seven strikeouts. In addition to his three hits, Bagshaw had a double to lead the Beavers. Senior Ricky Apodaca put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a double, two walks and two RBI. Sophomore Noah Madas also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and two RBI. The Beavers were trailing 4-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run double off the bat of Madas. The Vikings then scored two runs to retake their advantage heading into the fourth inning, when the Beavers responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. Minot State pushed across a run on Apodaca’s two-out RBI double, which tightened the Vikings lead to 6-5. Augustana expanded its lead to 9-5 before the Minot State offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 9-6 in the fifth. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Augustana added four runs to their tally on the way to a 13-6 final.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – A valiant postseason run by the Beaver softball team came up a few runs short of victory on Friday afternoon. Minot State’s offense was shut down by Minnesota Duluth senior pitcher Lauren Dixon as the Beavers could not push across a run despite totaling five hits as the Bulldogs collected a 2-0 victory in the NSIC Tournament semifinals. Junior Reegan Floyd (10-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (24-19 overall). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on eight hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. With the win, Minnesota Duluth (41-14) advances to Saturday’s NSIC title game and plays Augustana at noon for an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The loss ends Minot State’s season. Minot State managed one chance with a runner on third in the shutout, going a total of 1-for-3 with runners in scoring position. The Beavers last got a runner on third in the sixth, when junior Hannah Murray made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out. Minnesota Duluth scored a solo run in each of the third and fourth innings, then rode the arm of Dixon, who struck out four in the complete-game win.

UND FOOTBALL-HONOR

TORONTO, Ontario (UND) – Former North Dakota wide receiver and return specialist Weston Dressler will be one of seven Canadian football icons joining the halls of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame (CFHOF) and Museum in 2024, the Canadian Football League (CFL) announced Friday. Dressler will be inducted with fellow CFL all-time receivers S.J. Green and Chad Owens, cornerback Marvin Coleman and defensive end Vince Goldsmith. Coaching legend Ray Jauch and one of Canada’s greatest proponents of touch football, Ed Laverty, will also be inducted into the hall. Over 11 seasons (2008-18), Dressler played in 161 games for the Saskatchewan Roughriders and Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The four-time West Division All-Star and two-time CFL All-Star also appeared in two Grey Cup Championships, capturing Canadian football’s ultimate prize in 2013 in front of his Roughriders’ home crowd.

Dressler played at North Dakota from 2004-07 and earned 14 different All-America honors and was a four-time selection to the All-North Central Conference first team. As a senior in 2007, he became the first player in league history to earn All-NCC first team honors at three different positions (receiver, return specialist and utility) in the same season. He graduated as UND’s all-time leader in virtually every receiving category, including receptions (243), receiving yards (3,382) and touchdown catches (38). Upon graduation, Dressler made an immediate impact in the CFL, taking home Most Outstanding Rookie honors in 2008 with 56 receptions for 1,128 yards and 1,014 punt return yards. He had 715 catches in his career to rank No. 13 all-time in the CFL and his 10,026 total yards sits No. 17 in league history. The former Fighting Sioux football player tallied 65 touchdowns in his career, including five via kick returns. After his historic career with the Roughriders, Dressler was inducted into the SaskTel Plaza of Honour in 2022.

TWINS-RED SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chris Paddack pitched six scoreless innings to carry the Minnesota Twins to their 11th consecutive victory, a 5-2 decision over the Boston Red Sox on Friday night. The Twins matched win streaks in 2003 and 2006 for their third-longest ever, trailing the club record of 15 straight during its last World Series championship season in 1991. Minnesota won 12 in a row in 1980. The Twins (18-13) also have the longest winning streak in the major leagues this year. There were only four last season of 10-plus games, topped by Tampa Bay’s 13 straight. Edouard Julien hit a two-out RBI single to give Paddack (3-1) a lead in the third, and the lanky, long-haired right-hander took it from there. He allowed two hits, struck out six and walked one in perhaps his finest start with the Twins, who acquired him in a trade with San Diego at the beginning of the 2022 season. He made just five starts that year and was lost to elbow ligament replacement surgery. Red Sox starter Tanner Houck (3-3) completed six innings for the sixth time in seven turns, but he was pulled three batters into the seventh as the Twins broke the game open with a four-run inning.

UP NEXT
The Red Sox have scheduled a bullpen game for this afternoon, with a hole in their injury-ravaged rotation, and LHP Brennan Bernardino (0-1, 0.73 ERA) will start. RHP Pablo López (2-2, 4.83 ERA) will take the mound for the middle game of the series for the Twins.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – Junior Reegan Floyd was dealing on Wednesday, throwing a three-hit shutout to lead the Minot State Beavers over the Northern State Wolves 7-0 in the first round of the NSIC Tournament. At the plate, the Beavers were led by sophomore Sara Van Wickler, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run and three RBI. Senior Brooklyn Morrison put together a standout effort as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Abby Lohse also chipped in for Minot State, putting together three hits in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI. The Beavers took the lead for good in the fifth, scoring for the first time in the inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, as Lohse had the game-winning hit, and RBI infield single. Sophomore Anna LaCount’s two-RBI double highlighted the inning. The Beavers then tacked on runs in the sixth inning when they scored four times. The first three came on a three-run home run off the bat of Van Wickler, her first home run of the season. Morrison added her team-leading fourth home run as Van Wickler and Morrison went back-to-back in the four-run inning. With the win, No. 7-seeded Minot State advances to play No. 2 seed Concordia, St. Paul (37-13) today at 3 p.m. in the NSIC quarterfinals. The loss ends the season for Northern State (25-24).

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

BEMIDJI, Minn. (MSU) – Brian Parry and Ricky Apodaca each hit safely in both games, and Apodaca drove in three runs, but it wasn’t enough as Minot State fell 8-5 and 13-3 to host Bemidji State on Wednesday in the Battle of the Beavers. Parry finished the NSIC doubleheader 4-for-8 and scored three runs while Apodaca was 2-for-7 on the day for Minot State (15-31 overall, 12-24 NSIC), which closes out its regular season on the road Friday and Saturday, playing a doubleheader at Augustana on Friday and a single game against the Vikings on Saturday.

GAME 1 | Bemidji State 8, Minot State 5

Junior Brian Parry totaled three hits but the Minot State Beavers fell to the Bemidji State Beavers 8-5 Wednesday. Junior Hayden Bode (1-1) took the loss on the mound for Minot State. In addition to his three hits, Parry had a double to lead the Beavers. Junior Brent Riddle furnished a noteworthy day at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Senior Ricky Apodaca also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI. The Beavers lost the lead they built in the first but got back on the board in the seventh trailing 8-3. Minot State picked up two runs when a single from Riddle scored senior Cameron Carr and Parry, which tightened the Bemidji State Beavers lead to 8-5. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

GAME 2 | Bemidji State 13, Minot State 3

The Minot State Beavers struggled on Wednesday, falling to the Bemidji State Beavers 13-3 despite the efforts of junior Brian Parry, who went 1-for-4 with a double. MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – Summer Krebsbach led the way during another record-setting day for the Minot State track and field teams. The sophomore from Max, North Dakota claimed the newest all-time school record on Wednesday as she broke a 42-year-old mark in the women’s 200 meters at the Marauders-Mystics Tune Up. Finishing 2nd in the event, Krebsbach clocked a new Beaver-best time of 25.38 seconds to shave .01 seconds off the previous record of 25.39 run by Donna Bumann in 1981.

Krebsbach’s record effort was one of three on the day for Minot State which also picked up four wins in the Beavers final tune-up prior to next weekend’s NSIC Championships hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato, May 9-11. Adding NCAA Division II-era school records with their winning performances were De’Andre Cornwall in the women’s 100 meters, and the men’s 4×400-meter relay team of Zaccharius Brown, Devontae Daley, Ramon Duran, and Jasiah Hambira.

Cornwall, who last month set the all-time school record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, added the D-II record in the 100 dash on Wednesday as she led a sweep of the top four places by the Beavers. Cornwall won in 12.28 seconds, beating the old record of 12.32 run by Ashley Miller in 2022. Right behind their teammate were Camryn Adam’s, who took 2nd in 12.40, Tandy Plainichek, who was 3rd in 12.73, and Autumn Wright, who was 4th in 13.00.

On the men’s side, the Beavers’ 4×400 quartet clocked a winning time of 3 minutes, 16.37 seconds, which ranks No. 4 this season in the NSIC, and broke the previous Minot State D-II era record of 3:18.45 run by Tyler Bates, Alex Cundiff, Tyler Flatland, and Josh Sandy in 2014.

While Krebsbach, Cornwall, and the men’s relay team set records, Macey Moore and Peyton Tuhy each added a victory to the Beavers day on Wednesday. Moore won the women’s 100-meter hurdles in 16.03 seconds, and Tuhy bested the field in the men’s 800 meters in 1:55.85. Wednesday was the final regular season meet for Minot State. The Beavers next compete at the NSIC Championships, May 9-11.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

CHICAGO (AP) — Max Kepler and José Miranda hit run-scoring singles to put Minnesota ahead in the seventh, and the Twins rallied late for their 10th straight win, 10-5 over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Miranda added his third hit for another RBI in a four-run ninth that put it away for the Twins, whose winning streak is their longest since June 2008 and the longest in the major leagues this season. Willi Castro added an RBI single to cap a three-hit day that included a double and triple. Alex Kirilloff hit a solo shot off Chicago starter Chris Flexen. Ryan Jeffers knocked in two runs with a double for Minnesota, which has beaten Chicago in eight straight dating to last season. Minnesota’s Bailey Ober (3-1) scuffled to the win, despite allowing four runs on six hits in six innings. Twins center fielder Byron Buxton left the game in the second inning with right knee soreness after an unsuccessful attempt to steal second base. Buxton singled leading off the inning, didn’t slide and was thrown out by Lee. Buxton walked off the field slowly and was replaced in the bottom half by Castro, who moved from third base. RHP Chris Paddack (2-1, 5.88 ERA) starts Friday against Boston in Minneapolis.

TIMBERWOLVES-FINCH

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves are planning for coach Chris Finch to be with them in Denver to begin their Western Conference semifinal series following his knee surgery — and considering seating configurations that would allow him to safely be on the bench during games. Finch’s procedure to repair a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee Wednesday went well, according to assistant coach Micah Nori, who has temporarily taken the lead in Finch’s absence. Finch directed the initiation of the strategy for the Nuggets earlier this week before going into surgery. The team will fly Thursday night to Denver ahead of Saturday’s Game 1. Provided his recovery is on track, Finch would likely travel separately to allow more healing time, Nori said. In the NBA, the bench is cramped with reserve players and large coaching and training staffs with high-priced floor seats surrounding them to be right on top of the action. It will be a challenge to create enough space for Finch to keep his leg extended, and to be out of harm’s way in case another loose-ball chase or player collision comes too close for comfort. The Timberwolves have discussed relocating head athletic trainer Gregg Farnam’s seat to give Finch room. If they can’t make that setup work, Finch would likely join the team in the locker room for pregame and halftime meetings and watch the action from above in a suite.

TIMBERWOLVES-HONOR

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley received the NBA Teammate of the Year award for a second time on Wednesday. The finalists were selected by a panel of league executives, and current NBA players voted on the winner. Brooklyn’s Mikal Bridges finished second, followed by New York’s Jalen Brunson, Indiana’s T.J. McConnell and Cleveland’s Georges Niang. The award, given annually for selfless play, on-court and off-court leadership and commitment and dedication to the team, is named after Maurice Stokes and Jack Twyman, friends who played together on the Cincinnati Royals. Stokes was paralyzed after an on-court injury in 1958, and Twyman became his legal guardian and supported Stokes for the rest of his life until his death in 1970. Conley, who’s in his 17th year in the league, first won the award with Memphis in the 2018-19 season. He has also won the NBA Sportsmanship Award a record four times. The only other Timberwolves player to win the teammate award previously was Jamal Crawford for the 2017-18 season. Jrue Holiday, a three-time winner, is the only other player in the league to win the award multiple times. The Timberwolves face defending champion Denver in Game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series on Saturday.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

CHICAGO (AP) — Max Kepler drove in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning for the second straight game, this time with a sacrifice fly, and the Minnesota Twins won their ninth in a row, 6-5 over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night. The Twins extended their longest win streak since a 10-game run in June 2008. They also won their seventh in a row against the White Sox and put themselves in position to sweep Chicago again after taking four games at Target Field last week. Minnesota’s Simeon Woods Richardson went 3 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) and seven hits. The 23-year-old right-hander threw 81 pitches in his fourth career start and third this season. Jhoan Duran pitched around a leadoff single by Tommy Pham in the bottom half and picked up the save after missing the Twins’ first 28 games because of a strained right oblique muscle. Caleb Thielbar (1-1) recorded the final two outs in the eighth. The White Sox are a major league-worst 6-24 overall and 2-17 against the AL Central.

UP NEXT
The three-game series wraps up with RHP Bailey Ober (2-1, 4.21 ERA) pitching for Minnesota and RHP Chris Flexen (1-3, 5.11) getting the ball for Chicago. Ober has a 1.48 ERA in four starts since getting pounded in a loss at Kansas City on March 31. Flexen threw five scoreless innings in a win over Tampa Bay last week.

WOLVES-FINCH SURGERY

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves will enter their second round playoff series against defending champion Denver with an unsettled bench — coach Chris Finch will be recovering from knee surgery. Finch, who was hurt in a sideline collision with Timberwolves point guard Mike Conley, will have his ruptured right patellar tendon repaired today, according to a person with knowledge of the plan. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Tuesday because the team had not yet made the details public. ESPN first reported the news. Conley was dribbling up the court near the boundary when Suns star Devin Booker bumped into him, sending him hurtling toward the coach. Conley tried to brace their fall, but the damage was already done by the impact. Finch immediately grimaced and grabbed his knee in pain. The surgery will leave Finch with only three days of recovery before Game 1 in Denver, and this type of procedure typically requires the leg to be immobilized for more time than that. He’ll need crutches for awhile, too. The cramped space on an NBA sideline makes it difficult to envision Finch being able to be on the bench for the beginning of the series. Assistant coach Micah Nori took the lead after Finch hobbled off late in the Game 4 win at Phoenix that completed the first round sweep. Nori also coached the team March 8 at Cleveland when Finch was ill. Filling any voids will be a team effort from a staff that has developed a strong sense of chemistry in the short time it’s been together.

TWINS-TIGERS

CHICAGO (AP) — Max Kepler had a tiebreaking RBI single in the ninth inning, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 on Monday night for their eighth straight win. Byron Buxton doubled to lead off the ninth against John Brebbia (0-1). Kepler, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the sixth, then drove him in with a line-drive single to right. Caleb Thielbar pitched out of a first-and-third jam in the ninth, striking out Korey Lee to end the game after walking Tommy Pham and giving up a two-out single to Robbie Grossman. Joe Ryan threw six solid innings for the Twins. Coming off a win against the White Sox last week at Target Field, he gave up two runs and six hits. Brock Stewart worked the seventh, Griffin Jax (2-2) dodged a first-and-second jam in the eighth when he struck out Eloy Jiménez to end that threat, and Thielbar finished up to earn his second save.

UP NEXT
RHP Michael Soroka (0-3, 6.83 ERA) will take the mound for the White Sox after lasting five innings, giving up four hits and striking out one against the Twins on Thursday. RHP Simeon Woods Richardson (1-0, 2.45) starts for Minnesota. He went five innings against Chicago last week, allowing seven hits and striking out six.

MINOT, ND (MSU) – Colton Bagshaw and Ricky Apodaca each racked up three hits to help power the Minot State Beavers offense while Jonah Prokott dominated on the hill, leading the past the Saint Cloud State Huskies 5-3 on Sunday in NSIC action at Corbett Field. The win avoids a sweep at the hands of the Huskies who won the doubleheader on Saturday 5-2 and 9-5. Prokott (4-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State (15-29 overall, 12-22 NSIC). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out two. Noah Balandran also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts. In addition to his three hits, Apodaca had a double, a triple and an RBI to lead the Beavers, along with Bagshaw’s three base knocks. Grant Gabbert also helped out for Minot State, putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI. The win was the final home game for the Beavers who play an NSIC doubleheader at Bemidji State on Tuesday, then wrap up the regular season with a doubleheader Friday at Augustana and a single game against the Vikings on Saturday.

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with runs in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State plated two runs off of Saint Cloud State pitching, one of which was driven in on a run-scoring double off the bat of Apodaca. Grant Gabbert singled home the other run for the 2-0 lead. The Huskies then tied the ballgame at two before the Beavers came back to reclaim their advantage in the fourth inning. Seugjun Song came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-2, on a Brian Parry sacrifice fly. Minot State held Saint Cloud State scoreless before expanding their lead to 5-2 the following inning as Mark Ossanna scored on a fielding error and Song added an RBI single. Saint Cloud State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over but Minot State still held on for the 5-3 win.

TWINS-ANGELS

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Austin Martin and Alex Kiriloff drove in two runs apiece, and the Minnesota Twins stretched winning streak to seven games while completing a weekend sweep of the struggling Los Angeles Angels with an 11-5 victory Sunday. Ryan Jeffers, José Miranda, Christian Vázquez and Willi Castro had three hits apiece as Minnesota pounded out 17 hits while scoring at least five runs in its seventh consecutive game and moving back above .500 for the season at 14-13. Martin had a two-run single during a four-run fifth inning for the Twins, and Kiriloff had a pinch-hit two-run double in Minnesota’s four-run seventh. Eight starters got a hit — and the Twins did it all without a homer, too. Luis Rengifo and Nolan Schanuel homered and Jo Adell had an RBI double in the fifth for the Angels, who have lost four straight and nine of 10 after allowing 32 Minnesota runs in the three-game series. Pablo López (2-2) dominated the Angels from the start, retiring their first 14 batters in order before Logan O’Hoppe’s two-out double in the fifth kicked off a four-run rally. López finished with a season-high eight strikeouts. Reid Detmers (3-2) wasn’t sharp on his second turn through the Twins’ lineup, eventually yielding five runs on nine hits over five-plus innings. The left-hander gave up only three earned runs in his first four starts this season before allowing nine in his next two. Joe Ryan (1-1, 3.45 ERA) is expected to take the mound today on the South Side when Minnesota begins its second series in two weeks with the White Sox.

TIMBERWOLVES-SUNS

PHOENIX (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves are off to the second round of the NBA playoffs for the first time in 20 years. Their first-round sweep of the Phoenix Suns served notice they might be ready to go even deeper. Anthony Edwards scored 40 points, Karl-Anthony Towns added 28 and the Timberwolves pulled away late to beat the Suns 122-116 on Sunday night and sweep the first-round playoff series. The victory came after coach Chris Finch left the game late in the fourth after an inadvertent collision with Wolves guard Mike Conley. The team said he had a ruptured patellar tendon in his right knee. The success for Minnesota has been a long time coming, particularly for Towns, who was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in 2015 and waited nearly a decade to get his first playoff series win. Edwards is in his fourth season after being the No. 1 overall selection in 2020. The Suns swept the three-game, regular-season series from the Wolves, but Minnesota flipped that script in the postseason by wearing down a Phoenix team that had championship aspirations with their All-Star trio of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker and Bradley Beal. The Wolves will play either the Denver Nuggets or Los Angeles Lakers in the second round. The Nuggets have a 3-1 lead with Game 5 tonight.

MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros have advanced to the second round of the Robertson Cup Playoffs. The Tauros completed a three game sweep of their first round best-of-five NAHL series in Austin on Friday. The Bruins got on the board first with a goal by Alex Laurenza just 6:25 into the game. That would be the only goal for Austin as Minot scored the next seven goals winning 7-1. Joel Lehtinen evened the score at 1-1 in the first period. Rylan Jockims, Jack O’Hanisain and Murray Marvin-Cordes found the back of the net in the second period. Lehtinen tallied his second of the night early in the third and John Emmons and John Small also added tallies in the period. Brady James made 23 saves on 24 Bruin shots. The Tauros now await the winner of the Bismarck/Aberdeen series. The Wings lead that series 2-1 after a win Friday at home in Aberdeen. The second round begins Friday in Minot.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

ST. JOSEPH, Minn. (MSU) – The Beavers got the offense rolling, but in the end had to settle for a split Friday on the road in an NSIC doubleheader. Brooklyn Morrison and Taryn Bennett each hit a home run in the opener for Minot State (22-18 overall, 18-10 NSIC), but the Beavers couldn’t fend off a late rally by host St. Cloud State as the Huskies (28-24, 11-15) took game one, 14-13. Minot State rebounded with a 6-2 victory in the nightcap in the twinbill played at the College of Saint Benedict. The doubleheader wraps up the regular season for Minot State, which next plays in the NSIC Tournament in Sioux Falls beginning Wednesday.

GAME 1 | Saint Cloud State 14, Minot State 13

The Minot State Beavers brought a 13-10 lead into the seventh inning but could not hold on and fell 14-13 to the Saint Cloud State Huskies on Friday. Sophomore Calley Olson (2-2) took the loss in the circle for Minot State. At the plate, the Beavers were paced by senior Brooklyn Morrison, who went 3-for-5 on the day with two doubles, a home run and an RBI. Senior Taryn Bennett put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and five RBI. Junior Hannah Murray also helped out for Minot State, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding four RBI. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with runs in the top of the first inning. Minot State’s offense started clicking and put up four runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Murray. The Beavers then held the Huskies scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State picked up two runs, including one on a solo dinger off the bat of Morrison, which brought the Beavers lead to 6-0. Minot State’s lead had disappeared once the fourth inning came around and turned into a 10-6 Saint Cloud State advantage when the Beavers evened up the game at 10. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Bennett. The game remained tied until the very next inning, when Minot State got rolling again on offense. The three-run frame for the Beavers was punctuated by a two-run single off the bat of Murray bringing the score to 13-10 in favor of Minot State. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Saint Cloud State scored in the bottom of the seventh to grab the 14-13 win.

GAME 2 | Minot State 6, Saint Cloud State 2

The Minot State Beavers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 6-2 win against the Saint Cloud State Huskies on Friday. Sophomore Kierra Fournier (3-1) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, zero earned, on eight hits, allowing four walks and striking out three. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Minot State got on the board thanks to junior Abby Lohse’s RBI double with one out. The Huskies failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. Minot State picked up two runs in the frame, the big hit being an RBI double from sophomore Sara VanWickler, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Beavers. Saint Cloud State narrowed Minot State’s lead to 3-2 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 4-2 in the fifth inning. Minot State kept the Huskies scoreless before their offense got things moving the next inning. The Beavers notched two runs off of Saint Cloud State pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of senior Kilee Fehd, bringing the Minot State advantage to 6-2. The score remained 6-2 for the rest of the game as the Beavers coasted to the win.

TIMBERWOLVES-SUNS

PHOENIX (AP) — Anthony Edwards hit a jumper late in the fourth quarter and snarled as he ran down the court, pounding his chest with his fist for emphasis as Minnesota pulled away for another dominant playoff win. The Timberwolves are the undeniable alpha dogs through three games of this increasingly lopsided series. Edwards scored 36 points, Rudy Gobert added 19 points and 14 rebounds and the Timberwolves used a hot-shooting third quarter to beat the Phoenix Suns 126-109 on Friday night and take a 3-0 lead in the first-round matchup. The Wolves never trailed on Friday. It was the third straight game the Wolves used a big third to turn a tight game into a comfortable victory. Minnesota hit 7 of 11 3-pointers during the surge, including four from Nickeil Alexander-Walker, to take a 22-point lead into the fourth. Bradley Beal led the Suns with 28 points while Kevin Durant had 25 and Devin Booker 23. The rest of the team scored just 33 points. Minnesota goes for the sweep in Game 4 on Sunday in Phoenix.

TWINS-ANGELS

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Bailey Ober learned Friday that the best medicine is not to allow a hit for as long as possible. Ober took a no-hitter into the sixth inning while fighting through a stomach bug, Carlos Santana homered and the Minnesota Twins extended their winning streak to five games, beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-3. Santana drove in two runs, while Byron Buxton, Ryan Jeffers and Willi Castro each had an RBI to help the Twins win the opener of a three-game series and a six-game trip. Ober (2-1) was charged with two runs on three hits over 7 1/3 innings with eight strikeouts to continue his recent domination after he gave up eight runs on nine hits over 1 1/3 innings of his season debut against Kansas City. In his four starts since, Ober has a 1.47 ERA over 24 1/3 innings, while allowing a combined 11 hits. Left-hander Caleb Thielbar got the final out for his first save of the season and the second of his career. Patrick Sandoval (1-4) gave up four runs (three earned) over 5 2/3 innings for the Angels, who lost for the seventh time in their last eight games.

UP NEXT

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

DULUTH, Minn. (MSU) – The clutch hits eluded Minot State on Thursday afternoon as the Beaver softball team dropped an NSIC doubleheader, 2-0 and 6-0 at Minnesota Duluth. Abby Lohse and Paige Kellogg had a hit in each game to lead the way for Minot State (21-17 overall, 17-9 NSIC), but the Beavers could not push anything across against the stingy Bulldogs (37-14, 18-8). TWINS-WHITE SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Chicago White Sox dropped to 3-22, wasting a two-run lead and stretching their losing streak to a season-high seven with a 6-3 defeat to Minnesota on Thursday as Edouard Julien hit two of the Twins’ five solo home runs. Chicago matched Cincinnati in 2022, Detroit in 2003 and Washington in 1894 as teams that opened 3-22. Baltimore began 2-23 in 1988. Julien and Ryan Jeffers homered off Michael Soroka in a three-run sixth inning, Julien homered again off John Brebbia in the seventh and Carlos Santana and Jose Miranda went deep against Steven Wilson in the eighth. Chicago, off to the worst start in franchise history, has been outscored 141-56 and allowed 38 home runs. Minnesota swept the four-game series, its longest winning streak since winning five straight from last Aug. 3-7. Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson gave up two runs and seven hits in five-plus innings while fanning six in his second start of the season. RHP Bailey Ober (1-1, 4.91) will face the Los Angeles Angels toiday in the opener of a three-game series at Anaheim. In his last three starts, Ober has allowed just two earned runs in 17 innings.

VIKINGS-DRAFT

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings traded up twice in the first round of the NFL draft on Thursday night, jumping one spot to No. 10 for Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy to ensure they didn’t miss out on their most dire need and making a six-spot leap to No. 17 for Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner. The departure of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins in free agency to Atlanta left a void — and an opportunity that Vikings leadership has been strategizing about for two-plus years. McCarthy went 27-1 as a starter on a defense-driven and run-first team that raised questions about the 6-foot-2, 219-pound passer’s potential. He set the program record with a 72.3% completion percentage. Once defenders started to fall off the board, the Vikings struck a deal with Jacksonville by sending their fifth-rounder (No. 167) and third- and fourth-round picks in 2025 to move up from No. 23. Turner was a first-team Associated Press All-American who tied for eighth in the FBS with 10 sacks last season. After letting Danielle Hunter, D.J. Wonnum and Marcus Davenport depart in free agency, the Vikings signed Jonathan Greenard and Andrew Van Ginkel before adding Turner in this rapid restock. The Vikings don’t own any second-day selections.

ABERDEEN, S.D. – Brent Riddle led the way for the Beavers, driving in four runs in the opener and finishing the day 3-for-9 with 5 RBIs as the Minot State baseball team split an NSIC doubleheader at Northern State on Wednesday. Riddle was 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs in the opener, a 15-4 win for the Beavers (14-27 overall, 11-20 NSIC), who jumped in front 8-3 in the nightcap but could not stop a frantic comeback by the Wolves (17-25, 12-20) who won 18-8 in 7 innings. Minot State now returns home to host St. Cloud State (25-16, 21-10) on Saturday and Sunday to close out its home season. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1:30 p.m. at Corbett Field and will be Senior Day with the team’s senior honored between games. Sunday’s single game begins at Noon.

GAME 1 | Minot State 15, Northern State 4

Junior Brent Riddle collected four RBIs to help power the Minot State Beavers past the Northern State Wolves 15-4 on Wednesday. Senior Cameron Bagshaw (3-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State. The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, starting the ballgame and throwing three innings, giving up one run on no hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. Riddle went 2-for-5 in addition to his four RBIs for the Beavers. Senior Ricky Apodaca put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three RBI. Senior Mark Ossanna also chipped in for Minot State, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Minot State got an RBI single from junior Javier Gutierrez, scoring sophomore Noah Madas from second base. The Wolves failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Minot State offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Riddle, which brought the Beavers lead to 6-0. Minot State kept Northern State scoreless before building their lead to 8-0 the following inning. The Beavers scored twice, with one run coming across on Madas’ single. The Wolves fought back, closing the gap to 8-2 until Minot State added some insurance in the sixth. Junior Grant Gabbert crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Beavers, bringing the score to 9-2 in favor of Minot State. Northern State got within 9-4 before the Beavers scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 15-4. The Minot State offense piled up six runs, highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of Apodaca. The score remained 15-4 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers coasted to the win.

GAME 2 | Northern State 18, Minot State 8

The Minot State Beavers brought an 8-7 lead into the seventh inning but could not hold on and fell 18-8 to the Northern State Wolves on Wednesday. Freshman Ayden Sauerbrei (1-1) came out of the bullpen for Minot State and took the loss. Senior Noah Balandran was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 1.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts. At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Brian Parry who went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Senior Mark Ossanna furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Grant Gabbert also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Gabbert came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The Wolves then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the third. Ossanna came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which tightened the Wolves lead to 3-2. Minot State held the Wolves off the board before rallying to snatch an 8-3 lead in the fourth. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Parry. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Northern State scored 15 times over the remaining three innings to grab the 18-8 win.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Willi Castro hit a 3-run home run on his 27th birthday and Joe Ryan pitched six innings for his first win of the year as the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 Wednesday. Castro’s homer capped a four-run second inning against Chicago left-hander Garrett Crochet. It was his second career home run on his birthday and it drove in Austin Martin and Christian Vásquez. Castro entered the game batting .169 with one homer and four RBI as one of several Twins’ hitters struggling at the plate in the first month of the season. He also added a double off Crochet in the fourth for his second multi-hit game of the year. Ryan (1-1) had a pair of three-strikeout innings, but also allowed solo homers in the third to Kevin Pillar and Korey Lee. The Twins righty struck out eight and gave up three runs to win for the first time in five starts. Following the two homers, Ryan responded by striking out three batters — all swinging — in a scoreless fourth. He also pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning to end his night. Minnesota, which had a season-high 13 hits, has won the first three games of the four-game series against the White Sox, who hold the worst record in the majors at 3-21. Crochet (1-4) surrendered five runs on seven hits in four innings. He’s lost his last three outings.

NDSU FOOTBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The 2024 college football season opener between North Dakota State and Colorado has been rescheduled for Thursday, Aug. 29, at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colo. Start time and television network are still to be determined. Details are expected at the end of May when network partners with the Big 12 and other major conferences set their broadcast schedules. NDSU fans have until 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, to request tickets for the Colorado game on GoBison.com. Tickets will be allocated based on NDSU’s priority points system. A travel package will be offered through NDSU Team Makers. North Dakota State, under the direction of first-year head coach Tim Polasek, is playing Colorado for the first time in program history. NDSU is 3-1 against Big 12 opponents with wins over Kansas (6-3 in 2010), Kansas State (24-21 in 2013) and Iowa State (34-14 in 2014). After visiting Colorado, the Bison will play their home opener against Tennessee State on Saturday, Sept. 7, at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome.

TIMBERWOLVES-SUNS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Jaden McDaniels scored 25 points for a career best in the playoffs and spearheaded another stifling defensive performance by the Minnesota Timberwolves in a 105-93 victory over the Phoenix Suns to take a 2-0 lead in their first-round series on Tuesday night. Mike Conley and Rudy Gobert each had 18 points for the Wolves to offset a smothering of Anthony Edwards by the Suns, who held him to 15 points on 3-for-12 shooting after allowing him 33 in the opener. The teams head to Phoenix for Game 3 on Friday night. Minnesota has held a 2-0 series lead only one other time in franchise history, against Denver in the first round in 2004 en route to a 4-1 series victory. Devin Booker scored 20 points, Kevin Durant added 18 and sixth man Eric Gordon had 15 for the Suns, who again failed to get their high-octane offense in gear.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alex Kirilloff hit a two-out, game-ending single after Byron Buxton led off the ninth inning with a tying homer, and the major league-worst Chicago White Sox fell to 3-20 with a 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night. Chicago joined Cincinnati in 2022, Detroit in 2003, the St. Louis Browns in 1936 and the Cleveland Spiders in 1899 as teams to start 3-20. The 1988 Baltimore Orioles began 1-22. Trevor Larnach hit a 433-foot, two-run homer in the eighth to get the Twins within 5-4 and help set up the heroics by Buxton and Kirilloff against Steven Wilson (1-2). Buxton hit a line drive off the left-field foul pole, and Kirilloff pulled the ball into right field to score pinch-runner Austin Martin with the winning run. The Twins have won three of four after a five-game skid.

MINOTAUROS

MINOT, ND (minotauroshockey.com) – After notching a franchise-best nine goals in Game 1 on Friday, the Minot Minotauros, this time, had their hands full with the Austin Bruins in Game 2 on Saturday. Despite a hard-fought contest with back-in-fourth action, the Tauros still came out on top, winning 3-1. The opening period of Game 2 ended scoreless. Minot and Austin had two power-play opportunities each, but neither team could convert. The Tauros led in shots 13-11 heading into the first intermission. Into the middle frame, the close-checking contest remained tied 0-0 until Ian Spencer went forehand, backhand, and shelf on the breakaway to beat Bruins’s tender Trent Wiemken with 3:38 left. Colby Woogk provided the stretch pass to send the forward all alone on the Bruins tender. The goal for Spencer was the third he’s scored in the series. Minot padded their lead to 2-0 with 11:42 left in regulation. Nick Sewecke hammered home a rebound off a soft shot from the point by defenseman Pavol Funtek. Sewecke’s tally was the third he’s notched in the series’ first two games. Austin would split the score to 2-1 with 3:54 remaining as John Hircshfield was credited with the tally for his first of the postseason. Soon after, Austin pulled Wiemken, but unfortunately for the visiting team, Niklas Ketonen scored on the empty net to make it 3-1, giving Minot the victory and a 2-0 series lead. Next, the Tauros head to Austin for Game 3 of the best-of-five series on Friday at the Riverside Arena starting at 7:05 PM CST.

TWINS-TIGERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Casey Mize pitched six scoreless innings for his major league win since 2021, and Buddy Kennedy homered and drove in three runs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 6-1 on Sunday. Spencer Torkelson had two hits, scored twice and knocked in two runs. Riley Greene scored three times for the Tigers, who improved to 8-3 on the road. Mize (1-0) gave up five hits, walked three and struck out four in his first victory since Aug. 24, 2021, at St. Louis. The top pick in the 2018 amateur draft missed nearly all of the past two seasons because of Tommy John surgery and a back operation. The Twins have lost six of seven and are hitting .195, the second-worst batting average in the big leagues. Minnesota rookie Austin Martin led off the ninth with his first career home run, connecting off Alex Faedo to spoil the shutout. Twins right-hander Louie Varland (0-4) was wild from the start. He walked the first two batters he faced and, after getting a groundout, gave up a single and another walk. Kerry Carpenter’s base hit and Kennedy’s sacrifice fly drove in runs to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead. Twins RHP Chris Paddack (0-1, 8.36) takes the mound as Minnesota opens a four-game series at home against the White Sox tonight.

WILD-KRAKEN

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Tye Kartye tipped in a slap shot by Oliver Bjorkstrand for the tiebreaking goal with 2:40 remaining, and the Seattle Kraken held on to beat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on Thursday night to wrap up the regular season for two teams that missed the playoffs. Brock Faber answered Yanni Gourde’s empty-netter with 1:46 left by scoring for the Wild on a 6-on-4 power play with 1:05 left and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury pulled, but Kraken goalie Joey Daccord — who had 21 saves — and the defense held up. Brandon Tanev, who assisted on both of Gourde’s third period goals, painfully blocked a shot with his lower body in the final seconds that had him doubled over on the ice at the final horn. Kirill Kaprizov scored his 46th goal of the season on a power play in the first period, and Mats Zuccarello had the tying goal midway through the third period for the Wild. Kaprizov finished with 96 points this season after a slow start, by far the second-most in franchise history behind his 105 points in 2021-22 when he had 47 goals and 61 assists to set the all-time Wild marks in all three categories. Kevin Fiala is third with 85 points in 2021-22. The Wild were ousted from contention five games ago, missing the postseason for just the second time in 12 years.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State baseball team came out swinging on a cold, blustery day at Corbett Field. The Beavers (12-24 overall, 9-17 NSIC) plated 10 runs in their first two innings, putting the visiting Mary Marauders in an insurmountable hole as Minot State rolled to an 18-4 victory in the opener of an NSIC doubleheader. Mary (15-20, 11-14) rallied late in the nightcap to steal an 8-6 victory as the teams split the day. Minot State returns to the diamond this weekend hosting Minnesota Duluth in a 3-game series at Corbett Field with the teams playing an NSIC doubleheader on Saturday at 1:30 and a single game Sunday at noon.

In Wednesday’s opener, Brett Riddle and Seungjun Song ignited the onslaught as each plated a pair of runs in a 7-run, first-inning rally for the Beavers. After seeing the Marauder get a solo run back in the top of the second, Song hit his first home run as a Beaver, blasting a 3-run shot to left, and Minot State never looked back. The Marauders chipped away with 2 runs in the third and another run in the fourth, but Minot State iced the victory with an 8-run rally in the bottom of the sixth highlighted by Kekoa Munos’ first collegiate home run, a 2-run shot for the final 18-4 margin. Four Minot State pitchers teamed up on the hill with Ayden Sauerbrei (1-0) earning the win with 3 innings of 1-run relief. Sauerbrei struck out four Mary batters in his first collegiate victory.

In the nightcap, a Brian Parry RBI single gave Minot State an early lead, but the Marauders plated four runs in the fourth for a 4-1 advantage. The Beavers battled back and grabbed a 5-4 edge on Mark Ossanna’s 3-run homer in the fifth, and after the Marauders forged a 6-5 lead, Minot State responded again as Noah Madas singled home Brent Riddle, tying the score 6-6 after seven innings. But a 2-run homer by Dylan Edmands in the top of the eighth provided the win for Mary, which held the Beavers scoreless in the bottom of the eighth despite runners at second and third with just one out. Parry was 5-for-9 with 4 RBIs, Miles Iverson was 4-for-5 with an RBI, and Riddle was 4-for-7 with 2 RBIs for Minot State, which also got a huge day from Song who had 2 hits and 7 RBIs in the twinbill.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State Beavers were not able to score a run against North Dakota pitcher junior Jackie Albrecht on Wednesday and were shut out 8-0 by the NCAA Division I Fighting Hawks in non-conference action. Junior Reegan Floyd (6-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (18-13 overall, 13-5 NSIC). In the batter’s box, the Beavers were led by senior Lauryn DeGuzman who went 1-for-3 on the day with a double. Minot State is back in action on Thursday as the Beavers return to NSIC play at Minnesota State Moorhead, taking on the Dragons in a rescheduled doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. Minot State managed one chance with runners on third in the shutout, going a total of 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position. The Beavers last got a runner on third in the fourth, when senior Brooklyn Morrison made it 60 feet away from scoring with one out.

TWINS-ORIOLES

BALTIMORE (AP) — Cedric Mullins hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Baltimore Orioles a 4-2 victory over Minnesota on Wednesday and a three-game sweep of the Twins. It was the first career walk-off homer for Mullins. Pablo López allowed a leadoff homer to Henderson in the first but was outstanding after that. He exited after six innings and 87 pitches, having allowed a run and two hits with seven strikeouts. Baltimore’s Albert Suárez pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings in his first big league appearance in seven years. The 34-year-old Suárez was called up from Triple-A Norfolk before the game because the Orioles needed somebody to pitch after Tyler Wells went on the injured list the previous day. The Twins scored twice in the seventh to take the lead briefly. Austin Martin’s single scored Manuel Margot from first — he’d been running with the pitch. One out later, Kyle Farmer’s single scored Martin. Santander tied it in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot. The Twins have an off day today before hosting Detroit on Friday night. Joe Ryan (0-1) starts for Minnesota against Jack Flaherty (0-1).
