MSU MENS HOCKEY
MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Goaltending and special teams were on point for the Minot State men’s hockey team as they welcomed in-state rival University of Mary for the first home game of 2024. On top of getting all three goals on the power play, Riley Wallace backstopped the No. 1 Beavers (20-4-0) for the second shutout in a row as the team picked up the 3-0 win over the Marauders (17-8-0). Minot State scored a goal in each period, with the ice breaker occurring just over halfway in the first. Both teams will meet again in two weeks when the Beavers head to Mandan for another midweek match on January 24 at 7:00 p.m.
Troy Hamilton hit his 12th goal of the season on a nice setup that went cross ice from Carter Barley for the one-timer. Speaking of Barley, it was one of three assists on a night where he was dishing the puck in the right spots. Those three assists also tie Christian Kadolph for most points on the team this season, as both guys sit at 30 each. Kadolph added a helper on the night to reach that number. Reece Henry notched his seventh goal and a primary assist on Hamilton’s first period tally. Reid Arnold capped the scoring with his team-leading 14th marker. Even more important on the team front: the Beavers were perfect on the power play, going three for three. Despite a valiant effort from Mary’s goaltending and defensive game, Minot State held control for most of the game while limiting the Marauders chances at countering. Up next for the Beavers will be a weekend series on the road versus Midland University on January 19 and 20, with puck drop scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (CT) on both nights.

MSU WOMENS WRESTLING
DICKINSON, N.D. (MSU) – The Beavers picked up three wins Wednesday night but it wasn’t enough against in-state foe Dickinson State as the Minot State women’s wrestling team fell 35-14 to the Blue Hawks. Minot State’s Bella Hernandez earned a win by pin in 6 minutes, 10 seconds in her 130-pound match over Mikayla Jardine, leading the way for the Beavers. Haleigh Lematta added an 8-2 decision win at 143 pounds over Mariah Wahl, and Skye Shelmerdine picked up a victory by forfeit at 116 pounds, rounding out the three Minot State victories. The Beavers also got a team point from Madison Parson for her efforts in scoring in her 191-pound loss to Rylee Kogolshak. Minot State (5-6 duals) now heads home where the Beavers will host the Blue Hawks and the Jamestown Jimmies on Sunday in the inaugural Minot State Women’s Open tournament on Sunday starting at 9 a.m. at the MSU Dome.

WOLVES-CELTICS
BOSTON (AP) — Jayson Tatum scored 45 points — 14 of them in the fourth quarter and another 12 in overtime — as the Boston Celtics beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-120 in a matchup of the two conference leaders Wednesday night to remain perfect at home. Jaylen Brown had 35 points and 11 rebounds for the Celtics, who are 18-0 at home for the first time in franchise history. Jrue Holiday scored 12, including a corner 3-pointer off an offensive rebound by Derrick White to cap a 14-3 run that gave Boston a 111-109 lead with 26 seconds left in regulation. With Timberwolves co-owner — and Boston nemesis — Alex Rodriguez sitting courtside, Anthony Edwards hit a pair of free throws to tie it. Tatum missed an off-balance shot at the buzzer that could have won the game in regulation. Edwards had 29 points and Karl Anthony-Towns scored 25 with 13 rebounds for Minnesota (26-11), which has the best record in the Western Conference and trails only Boston (29-8) overall. Minnesota beat the Celtics in overtime in their previous matchup, in November. The Timberwolves host the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday night.

WILD-STARS
DALLAS (AP) — Roope Hintz, Joe Pavelski, Tyler Seguin and Jason Robertson — Dallas’ four top goal producers — scored and the Dallas Stars beat the Minnesota Wild 7-2 on Wednesday night to sweep a home-and-home set and the season series. Hintz leads the Stars with 17 goals, followed by Pavelski and Seguin at 16 and Robertson with 15. Nils Lundqvist had a goal and an assist and Matt Duchene and Sam Steel also scored to help the Stars spoil Minnesota goalie Jesper Wallstedt’s NHL debut. The 21-year-old Wallstedt made 24 saves. The Wild are 1-6-0 in their last seven games. Scott Wedgewood stopped 21 shots for Dallas, which is 7-0-3 in its last 10 games against Minnesota. Esa Lindell had three assists and Mason Marchment had two. Matt Boldy had a goal and an assist and Ryan Hartman also scored for the Wild. Dallas swept the three games against Minnesota, outscoring the Wild 19-5. The Wild host Philadelphia on Friday night to begin a three-game homestand.
