KHRT SPORTS – THURSDAY – 04/11/24

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Noah Madas led the way hitting a home run for the Beavers in each game of their doubleheader against visiting Minnesota Crookston, but it wasn’t enough for Minot State which dropped both games of an NSIC twinbill on Wednesday. The Beavers (9-22 overall, 6-15 NSIC) made their home debut after 29 games on the road to start the season but couldn’t come up with a win, falling 9-5 and 16-15 to the Golden Eagles (19-11, 13-7) in the doubleheader at Corbett Field. Minot State is back in action, on the road once again, playing a doubleheader at Sioux Falls on Saturday and a single game against the Cougars on Sunday.

GAME 1 | Minnesota Crookston 9, Minot State 5

An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Minot State on Wednesday. The Beavers plated five runs but could not hold the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles at bay and were bested 9-5. Junior Gage Eastlick (1-3) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Sophomore Jack Bright was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, with two walks and one strikeout. At the plate, the Beavers were paced by senior Mark Ossanna, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore Noah Madas put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Brian Parry also contributed for Minot State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.

Trailing 5-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the third inning. Minot State got an RBI single from Parry, scoring Madas from second base. The Beavers deficit grew to 9-1 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the sixth inning. Minot State scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Ossanna, scoring Parry and senior Ricky Apodaca, which tightened the Golden Eagles lead to 9-4. Minot State kept the Golden Eagles off the board before narrowing the gap to 9-5 in the seventh. The Beavers picked up a run on Madas’ leadoff home run off Isaac Roers. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME 2 | Minnesota Crookston 16, Minot State 15

The Minot State Beavers took a 12-10 lead into the eighth inning but could not hang on and fell 16-15 to the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles Wednesday. Junior Gage Yost (1-6) came out of the bullpen for Minot State and took the loss. Senior Noah Balandran was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout. At the plate, the Beavers were led by sophomore Noah Madas, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Senior Ricky Apodaca put together a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Junior Brent Riddle also contributed for Minot State, putting together four hits in five trips to the plate while adding two doubles and two RBI. The Beavers lost despite scoring in six different innings in the ballgame, last holding the lead in the eighth inning at 12-11. Minot State’s biggest output came in its four-run fifth inning. The big hit for the Beavers in the inning was a two-run home run off the bat of Madas.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

ABERDEEN, S.D. (MSU) – Minot State senior Gabi Dawyduk provided the game-winning hit in the opener then led the way in the circle in the nightcap as the Beavers swept an NSIC doubleheader from host Northern State on Wednesday. Dawyduk’s two-run double in the top of the 8th inning gave Minot State (15-11 overall, 10-4 NSIC) a 3-1 win to start the day, then Dawyduk pitched six strong innings in a 10-6 win to wrap up the sweep. Minot State now returns home to host NSIC leader Concordia, St. Paul on Saturday in a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. at the SCHEELS Complex at South Hill, then hosts Winona State in another twinbill starting at 11 a.m. on Sunday.

GAME 1 | Minot State 3, Northern State 1

The Minot State Beavers needed eight innings to get the job done but pulled off the 3-1 extra-innings victory over the Northern State Wolves Wednesday. Junior Reegan Floyd (5-4) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went eight innings, giving up one run on eight hits, allowing no walks and striking out four. Trailing 1-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. Minot State got an RBI single from junior Hannah Murray, scoring senior Gabi Dawyduk from second base. The game remained tied until the very next inning when the Beavers got going again on offense. Minot State pushed two runs across on a two-run double off the bat of Dawyduk that brought home senior Brooklyn Morrison and junior Abby Lohse, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-1. The score remained 3-1 for the rest of the game, as Minot State held on for the win.

GAME 2 | Minot State 10, Northern State 6

Minot State got contributions from every part of their lineup as all nine starters reached base safely helping the Beavers put 10 runs on the board and defeat the Northern State Wolves 10-6 Wednesday. Senior Gabi Dawyduk (5-5) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went six innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on six hits. The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting runs on the board in the top of the first inning as Paige Kellogg and Dawyduk each had an RBI in a three-run rally. The Wolves failed to push any runs across before the Beavers built on their lead in the third inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Hannah Murray, which brought the Beavers lead to 4-0. Northern State narrowed Minot State’s lead to 4-2 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 8-2 in the sixth inning. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a one-run single off the bat of senior Lauryn DeGuzman. The Wolves fought back, closing the gap to 8-3 until Minot State added some insurance in the seventh. The Beavers notched two runs off of Northern State pitching, punctuated by a run-scoring double off the bat of sophomore Anna LaCount, bringing the score to 10-3 in favor of Minot State. Northern State put three runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Beavers still coasted to the 10-6 win.

TWINS-DODGERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Edouard Julien homered twice and scored three runs for the Minnesota Twins to spark a lagging lineup and lead a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Julien, who entered the afternoon in a 3-for-28 start to the season, led off the first and fifth innings with opposite field drives into the bleachers in left for his first career multi-homer game. Alex Vesia (0-1) relieved starter Bobby Miller to start the fifth and took the loss after Julien’s first major league home run — his career total is 18 — against a left-hander. Ending an 0-for-33 team-wide skid with runners in scoring position was just as encouraging for the Twins, who have an MLB-worst .184 batting average. Byron Buxton delivered the streak-stopping RBI single in the third after Julien, the second-year second baseman, started the inning with a single. The Twins RHP Pablo López (1-1, 2.84 ERA) pitches this afternoon to begin a four-game series at Detroit. LHP Tarik Skubal (1-0, 2.92 ERA) starts for the Tigers.

TIMBERWOLVES-NUGGETS

DENVER (AP) — Nikola Jokic minimized the matchup between teams tied atop the Western Conference standings, then put on a show for the ages — and for anyone still doubting he’s the best player on the planet. The odds-on favorite to win a third MVP trophy, Jokic registered his 20th career 40-point game in powering the Denver Nuggets past the Minnesota Timberwolves 116-107 on Wednesday night. Scoring 41 points to go with 11 rebounds and seven assists, Jokic made 16 of 20 shots against the NBA’s best defense while being guarded most of the night by the league’s top defender, Rudy Gobert, along with Naz Reid. Jamal Murray added 20 points in 27 minutes and Michael Porter Jr. scored 18 for the Nuggets, who pulled away by holding Anthony Edwards without a bucket in the fourth quarter. Edwards led Minnesota with 25 points but was a non-factor in the fourth as Denver’s reserves put on a show featuring Peyton Watson’s six blocks and Christian Braun’s rim-rattling dunks. The Timberwolves host the Atlanta Hawks on Friday night.

TWINS-DODGERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tyler Glasnow tied his career high with 14 strikeouts in seven scoreless innings, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Minnesota Twins 6-3 on Tuesday night. James Outman and Will Smith each hit a three-run homer as Los Angeles won for the third time in four games. Mookie Betts walked three times and scored a run. Glasnow (3-0) struck out Matt Wallner looking to end the seventh inning, marking the third time in his career he picked up 14 strikeouts. He also accomplished the feat for Tampa Bay last season against the Red Sox and in April 2021 against Texas. Glasnow was efficient, needing just 88 pitches to get through his seven innings. He became the first pitcher since 1988 to strike out at least 14 batters on 88 pitches or less. Glasnow became the seventh pitcher in Dodgers history with at least 14 strikeouts and no walks in a game. Minnesota fell to 0-4 at home this season. The Twins have scored just five runs in those four games. Ryan Jeffers, Carlos Correa and Alex Kirilloff homered for Minnesota after Glasnow departed. Jeffers took Alex Vesia deep in the eighth, and Correa and Kirilloff connected in the ninth against Connor Brogdon in his first appearance with the Dodgers since he was traded from Philadelphia.

UP NEXT
Dodgers right-hander Bobby Miller (1-1, 5.87 ERA) takes the mound in today’s series finale, while right-hander Chris Paddack (0-0, 4.50) gets the start for Minnesota. Miller gave up five runs in just 1 2/3 innings in his last start against the Cubs. Paddack earned a no-decision in his only start of the year against the Brewers.

TIMBERWOLVES-WIZARDS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored a career-high 51 points and the Minnesota Timberwolves overcame an early 21-point deficit with a dominant second half to beat the Washington Wizards 130-121 on Tuesday night. Edwards had 30 points in the second half. Nickeil Alexander-Walker finished with 23 points and Rudy Gobert had 19 points and 16 rebounds for the Wolves, who have won four of five and eight of 10. Edwards credited coach Chris Finch for keeping him focused ahead of the matchup with one of the worst teams in the league. Minnesota has clinched a top-three seed in the Western Conference and has a showdown at Denver tonight with a potential No. 1 seed at stake. The Timberwolves and Nuggets are tied atop the West, one game ahead of Oklahoma City. Denver beat Utah and the Thunder beat Sacramento Tuesday night to keep pace. Minnesota improved to 12-5 without All-Star forward Karl-Anthony Towns. The team announced Tuesday that Towns has been cleared for full-contact, five-on-five basketball activities in anticipation of his return, which could occur as soon as Friday. The Timberwolves also lost starting center Naz Reid, who was ejected for “unnecessary and excessive” contact after an elbow to the head of Johnny Davis while battling for a rebound.

WILD-AVALANCHE

DENVER (AP) — Nathan MacKinnon notched his seventh career hat trick as part of a four-point performance, and the Colorado Avalanche broke out of a two-game funk with a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. Alexandar Georgiev stopped 20 shots in a bounce-back performance after allowing 12 goals in his previous two games. The win kept Colorado in second place in the Central Division with 104 points. The team trails Dallas by five points with three games left. Colorado also stays ahead of Winnipeg, which beat Nashville 4-3 in overtime Tuesday to climb to 102 points. Colorado hosts the Jets on Saturday in what could be a pivotal game for seeding purposes. The top two spots in the division earn home-ice advantage in the first round. Kirill Kaprizov and Matt Boldy had goals for a Wild team that was officially eliminated from postseason contention. Filip Gustavsson made 27 saves. The Wild play at Vegas on Friday.

TWINS-DODGERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Shohei Ohtani had two doubles and a home run — his third in five games — to tie his career high with three extra-base hits and power the Los Angeles Dodgers past the Minnesota Twins 4-2 on Monday night. James Outman hit the go-ahead homer in the seventh inning and Freddie Freeman and Will Smith drove in runs and Evan Phillips picked up his fourth save to fuel another smooth victory for Dodgers newcomer James Paxton (2-0), who flashed a wide smile when asked afterward about Ohtani’s impact. Manny Margot hit a two-run homer off his former team to give the Twins a third-inning lead, but the loaded Dodgers lineup was too much for their depleted bullpen after starter Bailey Ober deftly worked to depart with one run allowed in five innings. The Twins have lost three straight games with a total of 12 hits.

UP NEXT
Dodgers RHP Tyler Glasnow (2-0, 3.18 ERA) starts tonight, as RHP Louie Varland (0-1, 6.75 ERA) takes the mound for the Twins. Varland missed the opportunity to take the same field with his brother when the Dodgers sent RHP Gus Varland down to Triple-A before the game. Riddle came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which tightened the Mavericks lead to 15-3. Minnesota State expanded their lead to 16-3 before the Minot State offense got going, reducing that lead to 16-5 in the seventh. The Beavers scored twice, with one run coming across on Riddle’s single. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – The Minot State softball team battled hard but fell in a pair of NSIC games against preseason favorite Augustana on the road Saturday, dropping both games by matching 9-1 scores. The Beavers (13-11 overall, 8-4 NSIC) look to bounce back Wednesday when Minot State plays another NSIC road doubleheader at Northern State with first pitch slated for noon.

GAME 1 | Augustana 9, Minot State 1, 6 innings

The Minot State Beavers struggled on Saturday, falling to the Augustana Vikings 9-1 despite the efforts of sophomore Anna LaCount, who went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Junior Reegan Floyd (4-4) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. At the plate, the Beavers were led by LaCount, who went 2-for-3 on the day with a double and an RBI. The Beavers were trailing 5-0 in the sixth inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State got an RBI single from LaCount, scoring senior Brooklyn Morrison from second base. The ballgame ended with that sixth-inning rally falling short.

GAME 2 | Augustana 9, Minot State 1, 5 innings

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

VERMILLION, S.D. (MSU) – The Minot State track and field teams wrapped up their second full weekend of action for the outdoor season with a record-setting performance by De’Andre Cornwall. The Beaver hurdler from Lauderhill, Florida smashed the NCAA Division II-era record in the women’s 100-meter hurdles on Saturday at the University of South Dakota Early Bird meet and moved to second all-time in Minot State history in the event. Cornwall advanced to the event finals with a time of 14.63 seconds in the prelims which smashed the D-II record of 15.23 seconds run by DelRay Audet in 2016. Cornwall then finished fifth in the event with a time of 14.72 in the finals. Her time of 14.63 ranks No. 2 all-time, second only to the 14.44-second performance by Marlo Henke run in 1993. It also ranks Cornwall No. 5 in the NSIC currently this season. While she wrote her name into the Minot State record books, so did multi-event athlete Hayleigh Solano as she became the first woman in the Beavers’ NCAA Division II era to complete a heptathlon scoring 2,302 points in the grueling, two-day, seven-event competition to finish 18th at the USD Early Bird meet. The NCAA D-II era record holder, Solano is now No. 2 all-time in Minot State history in the event as well behind just Michelle Boyeff who scored 4,231 points in the heptathlon in 2001. While Cornwall and Solano set records on the day, Sidra Sadowsky, Devontae Daley, Peyton Tuhy, and Jasiah Hambria all added top 5 finishes for the Beavers in their individual events.  Sadowsky finished fourth in Saturday’s women’s 800 meters in 2 minutes, 22.03 seconds, while Tuhy was fourth in the men’s Saturday edition of the 800 in 1:59.66. Tuhy also ran the 800 on Friday finishing 21st in 1:58.77 as the event was contested both days for the men and women. Hambria added a third-place finish in the men’s high jump as he cleared 6 feet, 4.75 inches, and Daley was fifth in the men’s 400 meters finishing in 50.26 seconds. The Minot State track and field teams will be back in action at two meets next weekend, heading east to Des Moines, Iowa to compete in the Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake University on Friday, and heading west to Dickinson State for the Blue Hawk Games on Saturday.

TWINS-GUARDIANS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — David Fry hit a three-run homer and seven Cleveland pitchers combined on a two-hitter, helping the Guardians beat the Minnesota Twins 3-1 on Saturday. On a day when they lost ace Shane Bieber to season-ending elbow surgery, the Guardians showcased their pitching depth while improving to 7-2 this season. Carlos Carrasco worked three innings of one-run ball. The 37-year-old right-hander struck out six and walked three before he was pulled after 78 pitches. Nick Sandlin (2-0), Cade Smith, Hunter Gaddis, Scott Barlow, Tyler Beede and Emmanuel Clase combined to blank Minnesota over the final six innings. Clase worked the ninth for his fourth save. Joe Ryan (1-1) struck out seven over six innings for Minnesota, but he paid dearly for a hanging sweeper that Fry deposited into the second deck in left field in the second. The Twins went 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position and struck out 14 times.

UP NEXT
Guardians: RHP Triston McKenzie (0-1, 10.80 ERA) will start Sunday’s series finale. McKenzie gave up four earned runs in 3 1/3 innings at Seattle on Monday.
Twins: RHP Bailey Ober (0-1, 54.00 ERA) will try to rebound from the worst start of his career. Ober was hit hard in Kansas City last Sunday, giving up three homers and eight earned runs in 1 1/3 innings.

UND HOCKEY-HONOR

SAINT PAUL, Minn. (UND) – Sophomore forward Jackson Blake has been named one of the three Hobey Baker Award Hat Trick Finalists, as announced by the award committee on Thursday. The three finalists for this year’s Hobey Baker Award were selected from the initial list of Top Ten candidates by the 30-member Selection Committee and an additional round of online fan balloting. Criteria for the award includes: displaying outstanding skills in all phases of the game; strength of character on and off the ice; sportsmanship; and scholastic achievements. Blake becomes the seventh North Dakota player to earn the distinction and the third in the last five years, joining Jordan Kawaguchi (2020) and Shane Pinto (2021). The Eden Prairie, Minn., native put together one of the best sophomore seasons in program history, finishing with 22 goals and 38 assists to become only the second UND player in the last decade to hit the 60-point mark in a single season (Brock Boeser, 2015-16). His 60 points rank fourth in the nation and pace the NCHC while his 38 assists sit tied for third in the country and atop the conference leaderboard. He was even better as the calendar flipped to the new year, potting points in 21 of UND’s 22 games during 2024 while finishing with 34 points over his last 18 games to help the Fighting Hawks capture their fourth Penrose Cup in the last five seasons and sixth overall in the 11-year history of the league. During NCHC play, Blake shattered the conference’s scoring record with 37 points in just 24 games on his way to becoming NCHC Player of the Year, Forward of the Year and earning a unanimous spot on the All-NCHC First Team. For his career, Blake has 38 goals and 64 assists for 102 points in 79 career games to sit as only the second NoDak player to join the 100-point club as a sophomore in the last 30 years (Zach Parise, 2003-04). He hit the century mark in just 78 games, which is the sixth-fastest mark in program history. The award will be presented on Friday, April 12, 2024 at the NCAA Frozen Four and will air live on NHL Network beginning at 5 p.m. (CT).

TWINS-GUARDIANS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Tanner Bibee and the Cleveland bullpen had 15 strikeouts to put the clamps on Minnesota’s bats, Steven Kwan had three hits and the Guardians spoiled the Twins’ home opener with a 4-2 victory Thursday. Bibee (1-0) matched his career high with nine strikeouts, allowing one run over 5 1/3 innings. Four relievers followed, with Emmanuel Clase working a perfect ninth for his third save. Carlos Correa had three hits and Edouard Julien homered for the Twins. Minnesota, which averaged more than 10 strikeouts per game to lead the majors last year, fanned the 15 times and stranded nine runners — eight in scoring position. The eighth inning was emblematic of the Twins’ struggles. With Minnesota down by two runs, Correa led off with a double. But he remained stuck at second as Scott Barlow struck out Carlos Santana, Manuel Margot and Willi Castro in order to end the threat. Twins starter Pablo López (1-1) gave up four runs — three earned — in 5 2/3 innings. The Twins put runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings but came up empty each time. Julien finally broke through when he led off the fifth with an opposite-field homer, a towering fly that got up in the stiff north wind and carried into the left-field stands. Game two is Saturday in Minneapolis. RHP Joe Ryan (0-0, 1.69) gave up one run in 5 1/3 innings in his first start of the season on Saturday at Kansas City. Ryan was 0-3 with a 3.24 ERA in three starts against Cleveland last year. On Saturday, RHP Carlos Carrasco (0-0, 5.40 ERA) will make his second start in his return to Cleveland after three seasons with the Mets. Carrasco gave up three runs in five innings against the Athletics on Sunday.

WILD-AVALANCHE

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Nathan MacKinnon had a goal and two assists, Justus Annunen made a career-high 44 saves and the Colorado Avalanche moved closer to first place with a 5-2 win over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday night. Jonathan Drouin scored twice and added an assist as the playoff-bound Avalanche bounced back from a vexing loss Monday at Columbus, last in the Eastern Conference. Second-place Colorado is three points behind idle Dallas, which leads the Central Division and Western Conference with 105 points. Meanwhile, the Wild’s slim postseason chances are fading. Vinni Lettieri and Declan Chisholm scored for Minnesota. Filip Gustavsson stopped 31 shots. Minnesota is ten points behind Los Angeles for the second Western Conference wild card. The Wild have seven games remaining. The Wild will host Winnipeg on Saturday.

UND HOCKEY-HONOR

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND) – Sophomore forward Jackson Blake was named the NCHC Player of the Month for March on Wednesday afternoon, as announced by the league office. It marks the second straight monthly award for Blake and fourth honor of his career, earning the league’s rookie of the month distinction twice in 2022-23. Blake closed out his sophomore season strong, leading the NCHC with 13 points and 1.63 points per game in March. The Carolina Hurricanes draft pick recorded points in all eight North Dakota games last month, including three multi-point games, stretching his point streak to 11 games to end the season. Blake’s nine assists tied for first in the NCHC in March, while his 1.13 assists per game were solely first. He also added four goals, all even strength, and finished +3 during the month. Blake finished the season with 60 points (22g/38a) in 40 games, tying the NCHC single-season scoring record first set by former UND standout Brock Boeser in 2015-16. The 22 goals are fifth in the NCHC, while the 38 assists tie for first with Denver’s Zeev Buium. Blake was selected a Hobey Baker Award Top-10 Finalist on March 20, along with his First-Team All-NCHC, NCHC Player and Forward of the Year nods.

TWINS-BREWERS

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Jackson Chourio became the youngest player in six years to hit a home run but it wasn’t enough for the Milwaukee Brewers, who lost to the Minnesota Twins 7-3 on Wednesday as Ryan Jeffers hit a tiebreaking three-run drive to cap a five-run seventh inning. Rhys Hoskins also went deep for the Brewers, who lost their first game after a 4-0 start. Minnesota’s Alex Kiriloff went 4 for 4 with two singles, a double and a triple. Jeffers had four RBIs for the Twins. Chourio led off the fifth by connecting on Daniel Duarte’s 1-1 slider for a 402-foot drive. Chourio, who signed an $82 million, eight-year contract during the offseason, is batting .350 with a hit in each of his first five major league games. At 20 years, 23 days, Chourio is the youngest player to homer since Juan Soto did it as a 19-year-old in 2018. Chourio is the youngest Brewer to homer since a 19-year-old Gary Sheffield in 1988.

After Chourio gave the Brewers a 3-1 lead, the Twins rallied against Milwaukee’s bullpen. Kiriloff and Byron Buxton opened the seventh with back-to-back doubles off Joel Payamps (0-1), and Carlos Correa’s one-out single drove in the tying run. With two outs and two on, Jeffers got ahead 2-0 in the count against Bryse Wilson, fouled off four straight pitches and hit a 376-foot drive over the left-field wall to end an 0-for-13 slump. The Twins had not gone deep since Royce Lewis in the first inning of last week’s opener. Jeffers added an RBI single in the ninth off Thyago Vieira. Duarte (1-0), Brock Stewart, Griffin Jax and Steven Okert combined to retire 15 of the Brewers’ last 16 batters. Chourio’s homer was Milwaukee’s last hit of the day. The Twins open their home schedule with a three-game series against Cleveland. Scheduled starters for today’s opener are RHP Pablo López (1-0, 1.29 ERA) for the Twins and RHP Tanner Bibee (0-0, 6.75) for the Guardians.

TIMBERWOLVES-RAPTORS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 28 points, Naz Reid added 23 and the Minnesota Timberwolves routed the short-handed Toronto Raptors 133-85 on Wednesday night to move into a tie for first-place in the Western Conference. Rudy Gobert had 11 points and 15 rebounds for Minnesota, whose 48-point win marked its largest margin of victory this season. The Timberwolves began the day tied with Oklahoma City for second in the West, one-half game behind first-place Denver. Minnesota’s win moved it into a tie with the idle Nuggets with six games remaining for both teams. Immanuel Quickley, Gradey Dick and Javon Freeman-Liberty all had 16 points for Toronto, which has lost 15 straight since its last win on March 3rd. The 48-point loss was the largest in Raptors franchise history. The Timberwolves play at Phoenix on Friday night.

UND HOCKEY

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Top-seeded North Dakota dropped a 6-3 decision to No. 5 Omaha in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Semifinal on Friday afternoon from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. Despite the loss, North Dakota (26-11-2) will advance to the NCAA Tournament for the 35th time in program history beginning next week. The Fighting Hawks will learn their seed, matchup and location as part of the NCAA Selection Show on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on ESPNU and ESPN+. Denver defeated St. Cloud State in the other Semifinal 5-4 in overtime. Omaha and Denver play tonight in the NCHC Championship at 7:38 pm.

Omaha’s (23-11-4) Zach Urdahl struck for three goals and an assist while fellow forward Jesse Landell dished out a trio of helpers to help the Mavericks record their third straight win over NoDak and cement themselves in the national tournament. Jackson Blake notched yet another multi-point game for the green and white, recording a pair of assists to eclipse the century mark in career points. He becomes the first sophomore at UND to reach the 100-point mark since Zach Parise in 2003-04, the 26th player in program history to reach the milestone in less than 100 games and the sixth-fastest in UND history at just 78 contests. North Dakota got off to the start it wanted, striking just 78 seconds into the game when Jackson Kunz potted his eighth goal of the season on a loose puck in the crease to quickly put the green and white in front, 1-0. The Hawks nearly doubled the advantage while shorthanded, but Dylan James was stopped on a 2-on-1 chance late in the stanza. Just a few seconds after the James chance and as the power play was winding down, Omaha knotted the game at 1-1 on Urdahl’s first of the night to send the game into the first intermission tied. Blake nearly gave UND the lead right out of the gate to start the second period, but his breakaway attempt hit the post after a great move to keep the game tied at 1-1. Omaha took advantage of a pair of chances, grabbing a 3-1 lead with a pair of goals in the middle stanza. Hunter Johannes brought the Hawks within a goal in the dying seconds of the second period, finishing off a rebound from a Logan Britt shot to cut the deficit to 3-2 after 40 minutes. The Mavericks restored the two-goal lead early in the third, with the puck squirting through goaltender Hobie Hedquist and in despite the whistle blowing prior to the puck entering the net just 1:18 into the third period. NoDak answered back again to cut it one on Jake Livanavage’s snipe on the power play with just over 10 minutes to play in regulation, but a pair of goals over the next five minutes by the Mavs sealed the 6-3 victory.
