MINOT STATE BASEBALL-SCHEDULE

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – After getting a bit of rest thanks to winter weather, the Minot State baseball team is ready to hit the diamond for another home weekend. The Beavers will host Minnesota Duluth in a three-game series pushed back to Sunday and Monday, April 23 and 24, with the teams playing a doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at Corbett Field, then meeting for a single-game Monday starting at Noon.

The series might also be a bit of a grudge match as the Beavers will look for revenge against a Bulldog team that eliminated Minot State from the NSIC Tournament last spring. Since then, the Beavers (22-11 overall, 13-8 NSIC) have continued to be a top team in the NSIC as Minot State is No. 2 in hitting with a .324 team batting average, and the Beavers lead the league in home runs with 65 on the season. Meanwhile, on the hill, Minot State has been just as strong as the Beavers staff is No. 6 in ERA at 5.81 and No. 4 in total strikeouts with 272. Conversely, things haven’t gone as well for Minnesota Duluth which, on the mound, is in the middle of the pack with a 6.43 ERA and 256 Ks, though the Bulldogs’ offense is 13th in the league hitting .273 and averaging just over 6 runs per game. That’s led to a 14-20 overall record and a 7-14 mark in league play, though the Bulldogs do have some momentum as they snapped a seven-game skid with a doubleheader sweep of Bemidji State, 7-5 and 11-1 on Tuesday.

Individual, sophomore infielder Ethan Cole (.369) and freshman catcher Michael Gabbard (.301) lead the Bulldogs offense as the only two players hitting over .300. Cole is the team’s big bopper leading Minnesota Duluth in average, home runs (6), and RBIs (27). On the hill, senior left-hander Brayden Buttweiler has been the top starter with a 3-1 record, a 3.04 ERA, and 36 Ks in 26 2/3 innings to lead the staff. For the Beavers, Gunnar Kozlowitz is among the league’s offensive leaders with his .389 batting average, which ranks No. 8 in the NSIC, but he is just one of seven Minot State players hitting over .300 – Derek Kay (.377), Mark Ossanna (.364), Brent Riddle (.352), Matt Malone (.347), Martin Rodriguez (.337), and Javier Gutierrez (.317). While Kozlowitz is a league leader in average, Kay and Guiterrez are tied for third in the NSIC with 12 home runs each, while Kay is No. 4 in the conference with 43 RBIs. That potent offense makes things easier for a solid pitching staff led by starters Bryant Bagshaw, who is 5-1 with a 4.32 ERA and 41 Ks in 41 2/3 innings, Trevyn Badger, who is 2-1 with a 4.60 ERA and 36 Ks in 31 1/3 innings, and Dominick Parkhurst, who is 4-0 with a 5.76 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 31 innings.

The weekend series is just the second of the season at home for the Beavers who will make a quick road trip to play a doubleheader Wednesday at Minnesota Crookston before hosting the University of Mary on April 29-30, then hosting Southwest Minnesota State on May 2.

TWINS-RED SOX

BOSTON (AP) — Kenta Maeda was coming out of the game. But first, he wanted to get the out. The Twins right-hander took a 111 mph line drive off his left ankle in the second inning of Thursday’s 11-5 loss to the Red Sox. He steadied himself with his hands, then pounced on the ball to get Boston batter Jarren Duran for the third out. Maeda then collapsed onto his back and rolled onto his side. “I am not surprised to see him, on one leg” making the play, Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “You get nervous when guys are doing that and their leg might be broken. Honestly, I’d prefer he not damage himself trying to do that. But he is highly competitive, and he’s not going to stop playing until that leg stops moving.” The Twins training staff rushed out to attend to Maeda, who was able to walk off the field on his own after a few minutes. The team said Maeda had a left ankle bruise and X-rays were negative. Baldelli said he hadn’t decided what to do with his rotation, but the Twins play 10 more games before their first off day on May 1. The play ended the second inning. Emilio Pagan came in to start the third and gave up six runs in the inning, including Duran’s two-run double off the Green Monster.

The Beavers (23-17 overall, 10-8 NSIC) took the opener 3-1 thanks to a pair of runs in the top of the seventh but couldn’t complete the sweep as the Golden Eagles took the nightcap 7-4. The Minot State softball team now returns home to host Winona State on Saturday in another NSIC doubleheader, then entertains Upper Iowa on Sunday for “Senior Day.”

GAME 1 | Minot State 3, Minnesota-Crookston 1

The Minot State Beavers responded with a last at-bat rally, snapping a tie score in exciting fashion, securing a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on Wednesday. Sophomore Reegan Floyd (8-9) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing one walk and striking out four. Offensively, the Beavers were led by junior Izzy Penner, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a double. Freshman Taylor Smith put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-1 with a double. Freshman Sara Van Wickler also chipped in for Minot State, putting together two hits in three trips to the plate. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Senior Leo Watson came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. After the Golden Eagles rallied to tie the ballgame at one, the Beavers came back to retake the lead in the seventh inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-1. The score remained 3-1 for the rest of the game, as Minot State held on for the win.

GAME 2 | Minnesota Crookston 7, Minot State 4

The Minot State Beavers got three hits from senior Leo Watson in a 7-4 loss to the Minnesota Crookston Golden Eagles on Wednesday. Freshman Calley Olson (10-2) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State. Junior Gabi Dawyduk was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going two innings, surrendering two runs, zero earned, on two hits. Watson’s three-hit day led the Beavers offensively. Sophomore Chesie McLaughlin compiled a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a double and a walk. Junior Izzy Penner also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring runs in the top of the first inning. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning. The Golden Eagles then rallied to score seven runs and take a 7-2 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the seventh. Watson’s run-scoring single highlighted an inning where Minot State scored twice, which tightened the Golden Eagles lead to 7-4. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – The North Dakota basketball team has added former Iowa State guard Eli King to their roster for the 2023-24 season, the team announced Tuesday. King played in nine games for the Cyclones last season, scoring a season high five points against McNeese State. King, a native of Caledonia, Minnesota, was a finalist for Mr. Basketball his senior year at Caledonia High School. He averaged 19.9 points per game his senior year as well as 9.7 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 4.2 steals. He was selected as the recipient of the 2022 MBCA McDonald Award, which is awarded to the outstanding senior player of the year in Minnesota. Coach Paul Sather was excited about landing the former Cyclone, adding, “We’re excited to add Eli to our backcourt! He had a decorated and successful high school career in Minnesota and then saw action in a number of games for Iowa State last year; going against some of the best competition in the country in the Big 12. He has a versatile skill set—great handling the ball, crashes the boards and also tenacious on defense. We expect him to make an immediate impact and can’t wait to begin working with him!”

TWINS-RED SOX

BOSTON (AP) — Alex Verdugo singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning on a fly ball that barely stayed fair at Fenway Park, giving the Boston Red Sox a 5-4 victory over the Minnesota Twins in a bizarre finish. Umpires needed a few minutes to review Verdugo’s drive, which bounced off the low wall in right field just short of Pesky’s Pole, before officially declaring it a hit and the game over. That sparked a second round of celebrating by the Red Sox, who got 11 strikeouts from starter Chris Sale but little offense until the end. Reese McGuire had just tied it with a two-run single as the Red Sox rallied after allowing two runs in the top of the 10th. Max Kepler homered for Minnesota. Jovani Moran (0-1) took the loss, yielding three runs on three hits in the 10th. Moran also threw a wild pitch that helped the Red Sox win their fourth in five games. Sonny Gray finished with seven strikeouts and held the Red Sox to one run and seven hits over five innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

UP NEXT
Twins RHP Joe Ryan (3-0, 6.92 ERA) faces RHP Corey Kluber (0-3, 6.92) in the middle game of the series tonight.

VIKINGS-SMITH

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — With the departure of several prominent Minnesota Vikings players underway this offseason, Harrison Smith had to consider leaving himself — assuming he wanted to stay in the game at all. The opportunity to return for a 12th year in the NFL with the only team he’s ever known, now with a revered new defensive coordinator in Brian Flores, far outweighed the downside of taking a pay cut. “You can’t play forever, you know? It’s a big world out there. There’s a lot of things going on. So it’s fun to think about trying to dabble in some things here and there, but I can still run all right and catch the ball pretty well,” said Smith, the six-time Pro Bowl safety who matched his career best with five interceptions last season.

After stalwarts such as linebacker Eric Kendricks and wide receiver Adam Thielen were released for cap savings and free agents such as cornerback Patrick Peterson and defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson signed elsewhere for more money, Smith could have been the next one through the cost-cutting exit. But he decided to accept a $6.7 million salary reduction so the Vikings could clear that cap space and he could keep his place in Minnesota’s secondary. “I kind of grew up here in a sense,” Smith said, praising the investment owners Zygi Wilf and Mark Wilf have made in the organization over his time with the team. “There’s tangible things I’ve thought about and intangible things. They all kind of added up to I wanted to stay here and give it another crack. It’s tough to quantify everything. You try to because it makes you feel good — ‘Is there a right answer or a wrong answer?’ — but you don’t always know.”

Flores, the former New England defensive coordinator and Miami head coach, was hired to replace Ed Donatell after the Vikings slumped in 2022 to second to last in the league in yards allowed and third worst in points allowed. Flores runs a more aggressive system that is bound to send the capable Smith as a blitzer more often than last season when he was held back in two-deep zone coverage. “A big draw in staying here,” Smith said, “was learning from him.”

Improvement will be difficult for the Vikings on defense without Kendricks, Peterson and Tomlinson, but it’s not in Smith’s nature to stress about that. “It’s not like there’s an empty void. I think we think that for some reason,” Smith said on Tuesday, the second day of the team’s voluntary offseason workout program. “There’s still somebody out there, and we’ve got some guys, so we’ll see what we do.” The 34-year-old Smith will likely play again next to Camryn Bynum, who’s entering his third season.

Then there’s 2022 first-round draft pick Lewis Cine, his probable successor whose rookie year was painfully cut short by a gruesome lower left leg injury. “I’m not like, ‘Ooh, I get to be the guy that teaches,’ or whatever. It’s more I feel like I’m supposed to do that,” Smith said. “Not in a burden-type sense, but more like that’s what guys did for me. So try to pass along what you’ve got.” Cine has progressed ahead of schedule on his rehabilitation from the compound fracture and could join the team for on-field practices next month. “I just completely forgot he was hurt,” Smith said.

Cine also addressed reporters this week and expressed a similar dose of optimism about his status. “I’m taking it a day at a time, getting better a day at a time, stronger a day at a time. I’m not trying to look too far ahead,” Cine said. “So just be where my feet are.” Said executive director of player health and performance Tyler Williams last month: “I’m just so proud of where he’s at, his desire to be in this building every day, doing the things that we’re asking him to do, and then going beyond that. He’s been fantastic.”

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

MARSHALL, Minn. (MSU) – For the second time in as many days the Minot State softball team used a last at-bat charge to garner a split in NSIC play, this time rallying for three runs in the top of the seventh to top host Southwest Minnesota State 3-1 in the finale of their Monday doubleheader. The host Mustangs held on to win game one of the NSIC twinbill 2-1 over the Beavers (22-16 overall, 9-7 NSIC). On Sunday, the Beavers split at Sioux Falls, plating nine runs in the top of the seventh in an 11-10 victory over the Cougars in game two of that doubleheader. Minot State now closes out a six-game, four-day road trip playing a final NSIC doubleheader on Wednesday at Minnesota Crookston with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.

GAME 1 | Southwest Minnesota State 2, Minot State 1

Sophomore Reegan Floyd allowed only two runs, but the Minot State Beavers could not muster the offense to take advantage, losing to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs by the score of 2-1 on Monday. Floyd (7-9) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State. The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on seven hits, allowing two walks and striking out five. Senior Leo Watson led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a triple. Junior Izzy Penner put together a standout day at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Senior Courtney Chatburn also helped out, going 2-for-3 for Minot State. The Beavers were trailing 1-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State got an RBI single from Penner, scoring Watson from third base. Southwest Minnesota State then scored one time over the remaining four innings to break the tie and grab the 2-1 win.

GAME 2 | Minot State 3, Southwest Minnesota State 1

The Minot State Beavers rallied from down 1-0 in the sixth inning to win in exciting fashion, scoring three runs in the seventh to earn a 3-1 victory over the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on Monday. Freshman Calley Olson (10-1) started in the circle and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up one run on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out two. Sophomore Abby Lohse led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-2 in the ballgame with a double and an RBI. Senior Leo Watson furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Sophomore Chesie McLaughlin also chipped in, going 1-for-2 for Minot State with a double and a walk. Trailing 1-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. Minot State put up a three spot, the big hit coming by way of a run-scoring double off the bat of Lohse. The score remained 3-1 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers held on for the win.

NDSU TRACK-RODIN RECORD

AZUSA, Calif. (NDSU) – North Dakota State senior Jacob Rodin broke the outdoor school record in the 800m to headline Friday’s performances by the Bison men’s track & field team at a pair of meets. At the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., the Kenmare, ND-native ran 1:47.65 in the 800m to break Eric Stroh’s previous NDSU record of 1:47.80 from 2011.

NHL PLAYOFFS-WILD

DALLAS (AP) — Ryan Hartman scored 12:20 into the second overtime and the Minnesota Wild beat the Dallas Stars 3-2 in their playoff opener Monday night, and into Tuesday morning. Hartman gathered the puck in front of the crease and got it past Jake Oettinger at around 1 a.m. local time, ending a more than four-hour game in which both 24-year-old goalies had spectacular performances. The Stars had just been been turned away by Filip Gustavsson on a power play after Frederick Gaudreau’s tripping penalty. Gustavsson stopped 52 shots. He started the opener ahead of three-time Stanley Cup winner Marc-André Fleur. Oettinger had 45 saves.

Kirill Kaprizov had a power-play goal for the Wild in the final minute of the first period. He was right in front of the net and Oettinger for a nifty deflection of captain Jared Spurgeon’s shot. Roope Hintz and Jason Robertson, who in the regular season was Dallas’ first 100-point scorer, had power-play goals just over two minutes apart for the Stars in the middle of the second period for a 2-1 lead. Sam Steel tied the game with about 5 1/2 minutes left in the second period. His wrister came right after he had won a faceoff in the defensive end and then blocked a shot by Robertson. Game 2 is Wednesday night in Dallas.

VIKINGS-WILLIAMS SIGNING

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings agreed to terms on a contract on Monday with former New England Patriots cornerback Joejuan Williams, enhancing one of their thinnest positions ahead of the NFL draft. Williams played the past four years for the Patriots, who drafted him in the second round in 2019 out of Vanderbilt. The native of Nashville, Tennessee, has played in 36 regular-season games plus two in the playoffs. He was sidelined for the entire 2022 season with a shoulder injury. The Vikings have almost completely turned over their cornerback group, after Patrick Peterson, Duke Shelley and Chandon Sullivan became free agents and Cameron Dantzler was waived. Peterson signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Shelley signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. Another backup, Kris Boyd, signed with the Arizona Cardinals. The only two returners at the position are Andrew Booth Jr. and Akayleb Evans, both 2022 draft picks whose rookie seasons were largely limited by injuries. The Vikings also made former Arizona Cardinals cornerback Byron Murphy one of their priority signings in free agency.

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State got contributions from every part of their lineup as all nine starters reached base safely, helping the Beavers put eight runs on the board and take down the Northern State Wolves 8-3 on Sunday to complete their NSIC weekend baseball series. Junior Gage Yost (3-1) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State (22-11 overall, 13-8 NSIC). The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on six hits, allowing three walks, and striking out six. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with one walk, and one strikeout. Offensively, the Beavers were led by junior Mark Ossanna, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Sophomore Dalin Ludlow also helped out for Minot State, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding two doubles and two RBI.

The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Minot State plated two runs when Ossanna left the yard with junior Javier Gutierrez aboard. The Wolves then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 2-1 until the Beavers expanded their advantage in the fourth. Senior Matt Malone came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-1. Minot State kept Northern State without a run before building their lead to 8-1 the following inning. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring five runs, including a three-run home run off the bat of Kay and a two-run double from Ludlow. Northern State put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 8-3 win.

Minot State is back in action at home on Wednesday, next hosting an NSIC doubleheader against visiting St. Cloud State starting at 1:30 p.m. at Corbett Field.

TWINS-YANKEES

NEW YORK (AP) — Gerrit Cole pitched a two-hitter with 10 strikeouts for his fourth career shutout and the second complete game in the majors this season, leading the New York Yankees to a 2-0 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. DJ LeMahieu homered and hit an RBI single for the Yankees, who earned a split of the four-game series after putting slugger Giancarlo Stanton on the injured list with a hamstring strain before the game. New York has won or split its first five series for the first time since 2010, the Elias Sports Bureau said. Cole (4-0) lowered his ERA to 0.95 in four starts, finishing off the Twins on 109 pitches in 2 hours, 7 minutes. He got the final nine outs on just 25 pitches and retired former Astros teammate Carlos Correa on a fly ball to end it. It was Cole’s seventh career complete game and his first shutout since July 10, 2021, at Houston. The only other complete game in the big leagues this year also came against Minnesota, when reigning NL Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara threw a three-hitter for Miami in a 1-0 win on April 4 that lasted 1 hour, 57 minutes.

AUSTIN, MN (MINOTAUROS) – The Minotauros came into the weekend in control of their playoff destiny and got the job done early clinching the ninth playoff bid in franchise history with a dominant win on Friday night. Despite seeding still being up I the air the Tauros coaching staff elected to rest several key players on Saturday night but still hung tough with the Bruins before ultimately falling 2-0. The weekend split paired with results from the rest of the Central Division sets up a 1-4 matchup between the Tauros and Bruins.

Friday the Tauros jumped out to a 4-0 first period lead with two Joe Westlund goals along with markers from John Emmons and Chase LaPinta. From there it was the Hunter Longhi show as he matched Austin’s offense in the second and third periods posting a hat trick as the Tauros cruised to a 7-3 victory.

Saturday the Tauros sat 286 points in the stands in playing four Affiliate Players. The group battled hard through a scoreless first before falling behind 1-0 in the second. A goal midway through the third made it a 2-0 game and with most of the offense in street clothes the Tauros could not battle back.

The loss coupled with Aberdeen’s sweep of St. Cloud dropped the Tauros to the four seed, and a best-of-five series with the same Austin Bruins the Tauros just played the last two weeks. Game One and Two will be in Austin next Friday and Saturday nights. Then the series shifts to Minot on Friday, April 28th, for Game Three. If necessary Game Four will be in Minot on Saturday, April 29th; and Game Five would then be Monday, May 1st, in Austin.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Beavers enjoyed a memorable home debut. After 30 games away from Corbett Field to start the season, Minot State’s baseball team final played its home opener on Saturday, hosting Northern State in an NSIC doubleheader that the Beavers swept, 5-4 and 18-8 in seven innings. Along the way, the Beavers (21-11 overall, 12-8 NSIC) hit seven home runs on the day, giving them 63 on the season which is a new single-season program record. The long-ball bashing Beavers are back in action today hosting a single game at noon against Northern State to wrap up their weekend series.

GAME 1 | Minot State 5, Northern State 4

It was a tough day for Northern State pitchers as the Minot State Beavers plated five runs en route to a 5-4 win over the Wolves on Saturday. Sophomore Jonah Prokott (1-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Minot State. The right-hander went two innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Junior Javier Gutierrez led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz furnished a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Martin Rodriquez also contributed, going 1-for-2 for Minot State with an RBI.

The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Minot State plated two runs when Gutierrez left the yard with Kozlowitz aboard. The Beavers then held the Wolves scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Kozlowitz, which brought the score to 3-0 in favor of the Beavers. Minot State’s lead had evaporated once the sixth inning arrived and turned into a 4-3 Northern State advantage, when the Beavers re-took control at 5-4. Rodriquez’s run-scoring single highlighted a two-run output in the frame for the Beavers. The score remained 5-4 for the rest of the game, as Minot State held on for the win.

GAME 2 | Minot State 18, Northern State 8, 7 innings

Senior Derek Kay put together a stellar showing at the plate Saturday, hitting two homers to help propel the Minot State Beavers over the Northern State Wolves 18-8 in seven innings. Senior Garrett Nicholson (3-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State. The southpaw went three innings, giving up one run without giving up a hit, allowing three walks and striking out one. Kay went 3-for-5 at the plate, supplementing his two home runs with a triple while driving in six runs. Sophomore Dalin Ludlow added to Kay’s awesome power-hitting performance by going 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI. Junior Martin Rodriquez also helped out for the Beavers, going 2-for-4 with a home run, a walk and three RBI.

The Beavers were trailing 4-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Kay came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The Wolves expanded their lead to 7-1 before the Beavers offense got back to work, taking the lead in the fourth. Minot State hit four home runs in the inning on the way to pushing seven runs across, which brought the score to 8-7 in favor of the Beavers. Matt Malone’s solo home run, the back half of back-to-back home runs, gave Minot State 61 home runs on the season, a new single-season school record. Minot State held Northern State without a run before building their lead to 11-7 the following inning. The Beavers scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer from Ludlow that scored Rodriquez and junior Shane Kary. The Wolves gained ground, closing the gap to 11-8 until Minot State added some insurance in the seventh. The Beavers scored seven runs in the inning, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Kay, bringing the Minot State advantage to 18-8 and ending the game by the 10-run mercy rule.

TWINS-YANKEES

NEW YORK (AP) — Domingo Germán retired his first 16 batters, staying in the game after an extensive sticky substance check by umpires, leading the New York Yankees over the Twins 6-1. Germán had rosin on his hand, was asked by crew chief James Hoye to wash it and allowed some to remain on a pinkie finger. Kyle Higashioka and Anthony Rizzo homered and Giancarlo Stanton had a two-run double for New York, which stopped the Twins’ four-game winning streak. Germán struck out a career-high 11 and didn’t allow a hit until his 66th pitch when Christian Vázquez singled. Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli was ejected for arguing with the umpires after Germán was checked by crew chief James Hoye and allowed to remain in the game. Tyler Mahle (1-2) allowed four runs — two earned — four hits and three walks in 4 1/3 innings.

UP NEXT
RHP Gerrit Cole (3-0) starts Sunday’s series finale for the Yankees and RHP Pablo López (1-0) for the Twins, who have not won a four-game series in the Bronx since 1969.

MINOT STATE TRACK

AZUSA, Calif. (MSU) – It was Sidra Sadowsky’s day to lead the way. A week after a near-miss at a new school record, Sadowsky left no doubt as she shattered the women’s 800-meter NCAA Division II-era school record at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific. Sadowsky finished 89th in the women’s open 800 meters at the power-packed meet featuring Olympic athletes and a slew of NCAA Division I programs, besting her top time this season and the school record by more than two seconds, clocking a time of 2 minutes, 16.57 seconds. Sadowsky broke the old record of 2:18.72 run by Erica Clark in 2015, and her time ranks her No. 7 in the NSIC this spring.

While she led the way in California, Jacob Jensen added a top time in the men’s 5,000 meters at the same meet, finishing in 15:19.32, his best time in the 5K this season which ranks him No. 5 currently in the NSIC. Competing just down the road at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State, Minot State’s Leif Nelson finished sixth in the javelin with a throw of 230 feet, 4 inches on Friday. While they competed in California, other Minot State track and field teammates competed Friday at the Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake in Des Moines, Iowa, with Devontae Daley and Nathan Trujillo-Aragon leading the way for the Beavers. Daley finished fourth in the men’s 400 meters in 49.73 seconds, a season-best for him that ranks him No. 10 in the NSIC this season, while Trujillo-Aragon ran his fastest-ever time in the 400-meter hurdles of 54.55 seconds, good for third at the Jim Duncan and the top time in the NSIC this spring.
The Beavers wrap up a busy weekend with several runners competing at the Bryan Clay and Beach Invitational meets in California today.

TWINS-YANKEES

NEW YORK (AP) — Carlos Correa homered for the second straight game and hit a go-ahead, two-run double in the eighth inning off Clay Holmes as the Minnesota Twins rallied to beat the New York Yankees 4-3 on Friday night. Correa homered in the sixth off Nestor Cortes and helped the Twins overcome a 3-2 deficit in the eighth, dealing the Yankees their first consecutive losses this season. After winning its first four series, New York can at best split four games against the Twins. Anthony Volpe led off of the game with his first big league homer and Aaron Judge hit his fifth of the season on the next pitch. Giancarlo Stanton homered for a 3-1 lead in the sixth, but the Yankees lost for just the third time when Judge and Stanton homered together. Michael A. Taylor singled to start the eighth off Holmes (0-1), brought in to pitch the eighth against right-handed batters at the top of the order rather than in the ninth. Byron Buxton walked, and Correa followed by lining a sinker down the right-field line.

UND HOCKEY-TRANSFER

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – University of North Dakota head hockey coach Brad Berry announced on Wednesday that goaltender Ludvig Persson will transfer to UND for his final two years of eligibility beginning in 2023-24. Persson has been a steady force between the pipes during his collegiate career, appearing in 82 games in three seasons for Miami. In those three years, the Hindås, Sweden, native ranks fourth all-time in Miami history with 2,451 saves and was named the team’s most valuable player in 2020-21 and 2021-22. He is the only active goaltender in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) to have 50-or-more saves in a game, doing so three times over his career, with his most recent coming in a 4-1 win at Minnesota Duluth (50 saves on 51 shots). Persson also earned All-NCHC Second Team and All-Rookie honors during the 2020-21 campaign, posting a .925 save percentage and 2.62 GAA. Over his career, Persson has garnered NCHC Goaltender of the Week seven times, including one of only three netminders to win the award three straight weeks in the league’s history, and is also a two-time NCHC Goaltender of the Month honoree. Persson is the third acquisition by North Dakota via transfer this offseason, joining defenseman Garrett Pyke and forward Cameron Berg.

WILD-PREDS

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Juuso Parssinen scored at 2:44 of overtime to give the Nashville Predators a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Wild. Mark Jankowski, Kiefer Sherwood and Yakov Trenin also scored for the Predators. Juuse Saros made 21 saves. Frederick Gaudreau scored twice and Nic Petan also scored for the Wild. Gustav Nyquist had two assists and Filip Gustavsson made 27 saves. The Wild announced earlier Thursday they had signed Gaudreau to a five-year, $10.5 million contract that will keep the forward in Minnesota through the 2027-28 season. In overtime, Parssinen skated through the slot and lifted a between-the-legs shot over Gustavsson’s shoulder for the game-winner. With the Wild completing the regular season Thursday, Gaudreau was the only player who skated in all 82 regular season games. Matt Boldy played in Minnesota’s first 81 games but did not dress Thursday.

TWINS-YANKEES

NEW YORK (AP) — Michael A. Taylor, rookie Edouard Julien and Carlos Correa hit consecutive homers in a nine-run first inning, and the Minnesota Twins routed the New York Yankees 11-2 on Thursday night. Taylor homered twice and drove in four runs from the No. 9 spot in the batting order. Joe Ryan (3-0) struck out 10 and walked none while allowing one run and three hits over seven innings. Ryan reached double digits in strikeouts after achieving the feat once in his first 33 starts. Jhonny Brito (2-1), coming off wins in his first two major league starts, gave up seven runs and six hits in two-thirds of an inning as his ERA climbed from 6.75. Minnesota went 3 for 3 with three doubles on his sinker. Anthony Rizzo hit a pair of solo homers for the Yankees. Minnesota, which had lost 13 of its previous 16 games against the Yankees, had its highest-scoring inning against New York in a top of the first that took 28 minutes. The Twins scored their most runs against the Yankees.

With about 25 family and friends on hand, the 23-year-old Julien had a night to remember. The Canadian opened the first inning with his first league hit and hit solo homer off Colten Brewer with two outs for an 8-0 lead. The ball bounced off a fan’s hand in the first row and Julien got the ball back when a fan threw it back on the field. Julien became eighth player since 1974 to have his first two major league hits in same inning, according to STATS.

UP NEXT
Minnesota RHP Louie Varland, who made his major league debut Sept. 7 in the Bronx, will be called up to oppose New York LHP Nestor Cortes (2-0, 2.61) today. Varland is being added because the Twins are skipping Kenta Maeda’s turn and pushing RHP Tyler Mahle to Saturday.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State’s Reegan Floyd and Brooklyn Morrison led the way to an opening win, but despite a valiant comeback effort, the Beavers were forced to settle for a split in an NSIC doubleheader with visiting Northern State on Tuesday at the air-supported dome. Floyd dominated in the circle and Morrison drove in three runs as Minot State started the day strong with a 5-1 win. In the nightcap, the Beavers battled back from a seven-run deficit, closing to within a pair of runs of the visiting Wolves before the comeback fell short in a 10-5 setback. Minot State (20-14 overall, 7-5 NSIC) now hits the road for six straight, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State.

GAME 1 | Minot State 5, Northern State 1

The Minot State Beavers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 5-1 victory over the Northern State Wolves on Tuesday. Sophomore Reegan Floyd (7-7) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went six shutout innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out one. Junior Brooklyn Morrison led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with two doubles and three RBI. Senior Courtney Chatburn provided a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with two RBI. Junior Lexi Barduson also helped out, going 1-for-3 for Minot State with a triple.

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Morrison. The Beavers then held the Wolves scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Morrison came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Beavers. Minot State kept Northern State without a run before building their lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning. The Beavers notched a run on Morrison’s RBI double. Northern State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 5-1 win.

GAME 2 | Northern State 10, Minot State 5

An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Minot State on Tuesday. The Beavers put up five runs, but could not hold the Northern State Wolves at bay, and were bested 10-5. Freshman Kierra Fournier (3-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State. At the plate, the Beavers were paced by junior Izzy Penner, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a triple and two RBI. Freshman Taylor Smith put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Paige Kellogg also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

Trailing 7-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Minot State put up two runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Penner. The Beavers kept the deficit at 7-2 before closing the gap further in the sixth. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Smith, which brought the score to 7-5 in favor of the Wolves. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Northern State added three runs to its tally on the way to a 10-5 final.

UND HOCKEY-TRANSFERS

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – University of North Dakota head hockey coach Brad Berry announced on Tuesday that defenseman Garrett Pyke will join North Dakota for the 2023-24 season with one remaining year of eligibility. The Toronto, Ontario, native appeared in 81 games for Alaska during his three seasons, with the program not playing in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In those contests, Pyke tallied eight goals and 33 assists for 41 points. Pyke helped the Nanooks reach new heights this past year, just missing the NCAA Tournament and finishing with a 22-10-2 overall record. He led all Nanook defensemen with 19 points and his 15 helpers were third overall on the squad. Four of those contests saw him record multiple points, including a four-game point streak to end the season. After appearing in only 13 games during his freshman season, Pyke has played in 68 straight games and has nearly replicated his offensive production with 20 and 19 points, respectively, in each of those two seasons. The blueliner has also blocked 74 shots over that span, the most by a UAF player, carries a plus-15 rating during that time and plus-16 for his career.

Berry also announced on Tuesday that forward Cameron Berg will transfer to UND for his final two years of eligibility beginning in the 2023-23 season. Berg spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Omaha, appearing in 74 of the possible 75 games for the Mavericks over that span. The West Fargo, N.D., native scored 18 goals and added 29 assists for 47 points in those two campaigns, with nine of those tallies coming against National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) foes. Last season, Berg helped the Mavs to their best conference finish in program history while sitting fourth on the team with 10 goals and sixth with 24 points. The forward struck four times on the power play, recorded seven multi-point games and won 54 percent of his faceoffs on 326 attempts. The North Dakotan was selected by the New York Islanders in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft after earning All-USHL Third Team honors with Muskegon with 58 points in 51 games in 2020-21.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hanser Alberto’s throwing error allowed the automatic runner to score from second base and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in 10 innings on Tuesday night. With pinch-runner Willi Castro on second, Michael Taylor put down a sacrifice bunt. Alberto’s throw to first sailed and hit off the top of Taylor’s helmet, allowing Castro to score the game-ending run. Taylor, who also homered for the first time with the Twins in the third, had a sacrifice bunt a day earlier that went straight to the pitcher and led to the lead runner being thrown out. Minnesota reliever Griffin Jax (1-1) worked a perfect top of the 10th, standing Chicago’s automatic runner at third. Jesse Scholtens (0-1) was on the mound in the 10th for the White Sox, who got the game into extras after Luis Robert Jr. homered on the first pitch he saw from Twins closer Jhoan Duran in the ninth. Duran, who blew his first save in three chances this season, responded by striking out the next three batters. Minnesota’s Byron Buxton added a first-inning, two-run homer that erased an early 2-0 deficit. Pablo López worked 7 2/3 innings, giving up two runs and striking out 10.

UP NEXT
The series finishes today with Sonny Gray (1-0, 0.75 ERA) pitching for Minnesota and Chicago going with RHP Lucas Giolito (0-0, 9.00). Gray has allowed one run in 12 innings this season and struck out a career-high 13 in his last start. Giolito allowed a career-high 12 hits and seven runs in his last start at Pittsburgh.

TWINS-GALLO INJURY

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joey Gallo has been placed on the 10-day injured list by the Minnesota Twins after his sore right side didn’t show enough improvement in pregame workouts. The slugging first baseman is dealing with a right intercostal strain that had already sidelined him for three games. The move to the IL is retroactive to April 8. The team announced a corresponding roster move will be made before Wednesday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox. Gallo signed a one-year, $11 million contract with Minnesota in the offseason. He is batting .278 with three home runs and seven RBIs in seven games.

WILD-JETS

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Winnipeg Jets have found their groove just in time, after stumbling through much of the winter. With their spot in the playoffs clinched, now Connor Hellebuyck can get a break. Mark Scheifele scored his 42nd goal, Hellebuyck made 33 saves and the Jets secured the second wild card spot in the Western Conference with a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. Adam Lowry and Mason Appleton for the Jets, who won for the fifth time in six games and eliminated Nashville from contention. Kirill Kaprizov scored on a power-play for his 40th goal early in the third period for the Wild, who lost their long-shot chance at home-ice advantage in the first round when Central Division leader Colorado went to overtime against Edmonton. Minnesota can’t catch the Avalanche or second-place Dallas. There were 51 penalty minutes doled out in the game, including 41 in the third period. The Wild finish the regular season at Nashville on Thursday night. Minnesota will face Colorado or Dallas in the first round.

NBA PLAY-IN

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James had 30 points and 10 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers claimed the seventh spot in the Western Conference playoffs with a grueling 108-102 overtime victory over the short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA’s play-in tournament. Dennis Schröder scored 21 points and iced the win with two free throws with 8.4 seconds left for the Lakers, who will face second-seeded Memphis in the first round starting Sunday. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 24 points and Mike Conley hit three free throws with 0.1 seconds left in regulation to tie it for the Wolves, who will host New Orleans or Oklahoma City on Friday for the eighth spot.

MIAMI (AP) — Quin Snyder’s bags were packed in February for an overseas trip. He was going to spend time with some friends and family, see some coaches he’s gotten to know over the years. Then the Atlanta Hawks called with a job offer, to bring him on as coach. And now Snyder’s bags are packed again — for the playoffs, starting with a trip to Boston. Trae Young scored 25 points, Clint Capela grabbed 21 rebounds and the Hawks earned the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs by beating the Miami Heat 116-105 in a play-in tournament game Tuesday night. Dejounte Murray added 18 points for the Hawks, who avenged a five-game Round 1 loss to Miami last season and earned an East first-round matchup with Boston that will start Saturday. Kyle Lowry scored 33 points — his highest-scoring game in his two Miami seasons — for the Heat, who will host either Toronto or Chicago on Friday to decide the No. 8 seed and a spot against top overall seed Milwaukee in Round 1. The Raptors and Bulls play Wednesday; the winner of Friday’s game opens the series against the Bucks on Sunday.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Beavers have been rolling, scoring upsets and climbing the NSIC standings. The Minot State softball team looks to continue that trend today as the Beavers (19-13 overall, 6-4 NSIC) close out what’s proven to be a 16-game homestand hosting the Northern State Wolves at 2 p.m. in the air-supported dome on the MSU campus. The Beavers head into the mid-week doubleheader having won three straight and four of their last five, which includes a 4-3 comeback win over two-time defending NSIC Champion Augustana, as well as a 3-1 win over one of the preseason favorites in St. Cloud State back on April 2. As for Northern State (9-21, 3-7), the Wolves come in with some momentum as well as they swept Southwest Minnesota State 4-2 and 2-1 on Saturday, snapping a run of 15 losses in the previous 16 games.

TIMBERWOLVES

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have suspended center Rudy Gobert for their play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 10-year veteran threw a punch at teammate Kyle Anderson in an argument in the huddle during a timeout. Gobert took a swing at Anderson and hit him in the upper chest in the second quarter of Minnesota’s game Sunday against New Orleans. If the Timberwolves beat the Lakers they’ll get the No. 7 seed and face Memphis in the first round. If they lose, they’ll host the New Orleans-Oklahoma City winner for the No. 8 seed and a first-round date with Denver.

Minnesota also announced on Monday that forward Jaden McDaniels suffered a right hand injury during Sunday’s game vs. New Orleans Pelicans. X-rays and further imaging taken at Mayo Clinic Square by Dr. Kelechi Okoroha on McDaniels revealed fractures of his third and fourth metacarpals. He has been placed in a cast and will be out indefinitely. McDaniels is the Wolves best defender and was injured when he punched a wall in the tunnel. In 79 games (all starts) this season, McDaniels averaged career highs with 12.1 points on 59.1% shooting and 1.9 assists, along with 3.9 rebounds per game.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hanser Alberto hit a three-run homer, Dylan Cease had another strong outing against the Twins and the Chicago White Sox held on to beat Minnesota 4-3 on Monday. Yasmani Grandal had two hits and drove in the other run for Chicago, which had to remove shortstop Tim Anderson in the sixth inning with left knee soreness after he collided with a baserunner. Cease, the American League Cy Young runner-up last season, gave up three runs but only one was earned after three errors by the White Sox. Cease (2-0) allowed three hits with six strikeouts in five innings. The Twins hit just 2 for 48 and were scoreless in 16 innings in two games against Cease last season. Kenta Maeda (0-2) surrendered four runs on eight hits in six innings for Minnesota, making his second start since Aug. 21, 2021, after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

UP NEXT
RHP Pablo López (1-0, 0.73 ERA) will make his third start for Minnesota, and Chicago counters with RHP Lance Lynn (0-1, 9.00). López has allowed one run through his first 12 1/3 innings. Lynn has given up 10 runs in 10 innings this season and has surrendered 15 runs in 15 innings in his last three starts against Minnesota.

MINNESOTA LYNX-WNBA DRAFT

MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Lynx added plenty of size and talent in the WNBA Draft Monday night. With the second overall pick, the Lynx took Diamond Miller, a 6’3″ guard from Maryland. Miller was a Second Team All-American in 2023 and averaged 19.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game in her senior season. At the end of the first round, the Lynx added 19-year-old French power forward Maia Hirsch. The 6’5″ Hirsch is averaging 4.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game in France’s LFB League this season.

In the second round, the Lynx drafted another 6’5″ forward, Dorka Juhász of the UConn Huskies, and 6’1″ guard Brea Beal from South Carolina. Juhász averaged 14.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game this year, making her a finalist for the Lisa Leslie award for the best center in the nation. Beal was a four-year starter for the Gamecocks, and was named a finalist for Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in her senior season. The Lynx’s final pick was Taylor Soule out of Virginia Tech. The Hokies made the Final Four this season thanks in part to Soule’s 10.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.

The Lynx kick off the season May 19 at Target Center against the Chicago Sky.

MINOT, ND (MINOTAUROS) – The Minotauros came into the weekend in control of their playoff destiny following a clean sweep of the Aberdeen Wings last weekend. Hosting the Austin Bruins for the final home series of the regular season, Minot didn’t disappoint their fans by picking up two wins against the Bruins.

On Friday night, the Tauros braved a challenging first period, aided by their netminder Noah Rupprecht, who stopped 11 Austin shots in the opening frame. Despite the intense back-and-forth action, neither team managed to score a goal before heading into the first intermission. Minot struck first when Trevor Stachowiak recorded his 14th goal of the season, giving the Tauros a 1-0 lead with 13:37 left in the second period. Kolby Amici and Jan- Kasper Bergman added the assists. Austin would counter at 19:04 when defenseman Matthew Desiderio netted his fifth marker of the campaign making it 1-1. Austin jumped ahead 2-1 as Bruins Gavin Morrissey slid one past Rupprecht with 11:31 left in regulation. Tauros Weston Knox, just over two minutes later, grabbed his sixth marker on a beautiful move to beat Austin goalie Trent Wiemken. Stachowiak and Braden Fischer provided the helpers. No other goals would be scored in regulation or overtime, and the outcome had to be decided in a shootout. Austin could not solve Rupprecht in the shootout, while Tauros Chase LaPinta scored on a nifty move to clinch Minot’s 3-2 victory.

Saturday was another hard-fought affair, with zero goals being scored until the 14:36 mark of the second period. Then, Defenseman Nick O’Hanisian sniped just below the circles after a great dish from Colby Joseph coming out of the corner to take a 1-0 lead. Colby Woogk logged the secondary assist. The Bruins could not connect on several opportunities in the third. However, Tauros Hunter Longhi and Colby Woogk added insurance markers to help Rupprecht pickup a 3-0 shutout and a Tauro’s series sweep.

Next up for the Tauros is a weekend road trip to Austin for the final games of the regular season on Friday and Saturday nights.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

VERMILLION, S.D. (MSU) – Leif Nelson now is the greatest javelin thrower in the history of Minot State track and field. One week after the NCAA All-American broke his own NCAA Division II school record, he shattered that and added the all-time school record in the javelin to his season accomplishments with a victorious effort in the event at the University of South Dakota’s Early Bird Open. Nelson turned in a throw of 237 feet, 1.75 inches to win the meet, break his own D-II record of 222-7 from one week earlier, and break the all-time school record of 235-1 set by Minot State Athletic Hall of Famer Ed Boos back in 1982. Also another NCAA national provisional qualifying mark, Nelson improved his standing nationally and now ranks No. 4 in the javelin.

While Nelson’s record-setting performance stole the show, the Beavers also added a few other standout efforts on Saturday as Juan Gutierrez was fifth at the USD Early Bird in the men’s 800 meters in 1 minute, 57.83 seconds, and Jessica Martinez was 12th in the women’s 800 meters in 2:32.20. Two weekends into the outdoor season, the Minot State track and field teams now split up and head to meets across the country this week, competing in the Mt. SAC Relays, the Bryan Clay Invitational, the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, and the Beach Invitational all in California, and the Jim Duncan Invitational hosted by Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

VERMILLION, S.D. (MSU) – Chase Snyder crushed his own school record while Sidra Sadowsky did the same to her own best time in the 800 meters and was fractions of a second away from another record as the Minot State track and field teams started the weekend strong at the University of South Dakota Early Bird Open. The Beavers continue competing at the meet today.

Snyder, who one week earlier opened the outdoor track and field season with a record effort in the men’s shot put, shattered that performance by more than three feet on Friday as he finished ninth overall with a throw of 53 feet, 9 inches. A new NCAA Division II school record, Snyder also now ranks No. 2 in the shot put in the NSIC with his new top mark.

Just .03 seconds away from setting another NCAA D-II era top mark was Sadowsky who was 11th in the women’s 800 meters in 2 minutes, 18.75 seconds, a personal-best by nearly two seconds for the sophomore middle-distance runner who moved to No. 5 in the NSIC in the event. Sadowsky’s time was just .03 seconds off the record set by Erica Clark of 2:18.72 in 2015.

Adding a career-best in the men’s 400-meter hurdles was Nathan Trujillo-Aragon who was fifth overall in the event in 55.66 on Friday, which currently ranks as the No. 1 time in the NSIC this spring. And Jacob Jensen added a seventh-place finish in the men’s 1,500 meters in 3:59.33 on the day for Minot State, which ranks him sixth currently in the NSIC in that event.

TWINS-ASTROS

MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – The Minnesota Twins got a career day from Sonny Gray on the mound,, and celebrated Friday’s 2023 home opener at Target Field with a walk-off victory over the Houston Astros. Gray set a career-high with 13 strikeouts and allowed just one run over seven innings, and the Twins got their two biggest hits of the day in the 10th inning to earn a 3-2 victory in front of a sellout crowd of 38,465 fans. It’s the most strikeouts a Twins’ starter has had in a game since Francisco Liriano struck out 15 against the Oakland A’s in July of 2012.

The Twins scattered 11 hits and had scoring chances in three straight innings, but until the 10th inning, the only run they scored came from Donovan Solano getting home on a wild pitch in the sixth to tie the game 1-1. With a runner at second to start the 10th inning, Mauricio Dubon singled to left to give the Astros a 2-1 lead. The Twins had the answer in the bottom half, despite Carlos Correa taking a called third strike with Byron Buxton at second. Buxton scored on Jose Miranda’s single to right. The Twins got the walk-off winner on a single up the middle from Kyle Farmer, scoring Trevor Larnach. Miranda’s hit broke an 0-for-9 skid for the Twins with runners in scoring position. The Twins are 5-2, and face the Astros today at Target Field. Joe Ryan (1-0, 1.50 ERA) will start for Minnesota against Luis Garcia (0-1, 5.40 ERA) for Houston.

The wind toppled three pine trees near the 17th tee where spectators were standing. Augusta National says no one was hurt. Koepka leads by four over U.S. Amateur champion Sam Bennett. The Texas A&M senior had a 68 and posted the lowest 36-hole score by an amateur at the Masters since 1956. Jon Rahm was three behind with nine holes to play. Tiger Woods is hovering around the cut line. Fargo-native Tom Hoge shot a +2 in the second round for a two round total of +4. He will most likely miss the cut which is projected at +2.

MSU SOFTBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – It will be a tale of two very different teams as Minot State is back in action hosting NSIC doubleheaders this weekend in the air-supported dome on the MSU campus. Game times have been adjusted with first pitch on Friday at 10 a.m. against visiting Augustana, the two-time defending NSIC regular-season champs, then the Beavers hosts Wayne State on Saturday with action starting at 8 a.m. The games were moved ahead to allow the University of Mary to play both Wayne State, on Friday starting at 2:30 p.m., and Augustana, on Saturday starting at 12:30 p.m., inside “The Bubble.”

The Beavers big focus will be on Friday’s 10 a.m. doubleheader against the Vikings (18-9 overall, 5-1 NSIC), who are battling once again for the league crown. Augustana is an offensive juggernaut and leads the NSIC in batting average (.332), home runs (34), runs scored (182), and RBIs (168), which means a key to victory for Minot State will be limiting the Vikings offensive chances. If the Beavers (16-12, 3-3) slow down Augustana’s offense, then Minot State has a chance offensively itself as Augustana’s pitchers are 10th in the NSIC with a 4.56 ERA and foes hit .293 against the Vikings. And, Minot State heads into the weekend with momentum after a gutsy 3-1 upset of St. Cloud State on Sunday in the Beavers last action.

MSU BASEBALL

FAYETTE, Iowa (MSU) – It’s becoming an all-too-familiar phrase: The Minot State baseball team is back on the road. The Beavers head out for yet another series away from home, this time traveling to Upper Iowa for a doubleheader starting at noon on Friday, then a single game Saturday at noon. After a brief break to celebrate Easter, the Beavers then wrap up their most recent road trip with a mid-week doubleheader at Wayne State on Wednesday starting at noon.

With 25 games away from home under their belt – and none yet at Corbett Field in Minot – the Beavers (16-9 overall, 7-6 NSIC) look to shake out of a recent slump as Minot State has dropped 5 of its last 7 contests. Despite a few recent setbacks, Minot State remains one of the power-house offensive programs in the NSIC as they are hitting .320, which is third best in the league, and are second in the NSIC in home runs with 43. Pitching-wise, the Beavers also are one of the top teams as their 5.13 ERA is sixth-best in the league, and the staff’s 207 strikeouts are fifth-most in the conference. The big difference has been timely hitting for the Beavers in their most recent losses with 46 runners left on base in the five setbacks. With the offense still clicking, and pitching still strong, it’s only a matter of a few timely base hits falling to get the Beavers on a roll. That could start at Upper Iowa (10-15, 6-8) as the Peacocks’ pitching staff is 11th in the league in ERA at 6.90 and opponents are hitting .291 against them. While that should benefit the Beaver batters, the Minot State pitching staff will face an offense from Upper Iowa that is 14th in the NSIC in batting average at .256 and averages just 5.76 runs per game, giving Minot State the opportunity, with solid all-around play, to start a win streak.

WILD-PENGUINS

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Tristan Jarry stopped 27 shots and the Pittsburgh Penguins kept pace in the race for one of the two wild-card spots in the Eastern Conference with a 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild. The Penguins bounced back from a miserable performance in a loss to New Jersey by putting together three complete periods, a rarity for most of the last three months. Kris Letang, Rickard Rakell, Jason Zucker and Jeff Carter scored for Pittsburgh. Marc-Andre Fleury fell to 4-4 all-time against Pittsburgh, where he won three Stanley Cups before leaving in 2017. The Wild lost in regulation for just the third time in their last 24 games. Minnesota’s bid to chase down first-place Colorado in the Central Division took a hit when the Wild struggled to generate much traffic in front of Jarry until they fell too far behind. Fleury stopped 27 shots while falling to 4-4 all-time against the team for which he played from 2003-17. Marcus Johansson scored on the two-man advantage midway through the third period to spoil Jarry’s bid for a shutout, but couldn’t stop Minnesota from losing in regulation for just the third time in its last 24 games. The Wild host St. Louis on Saturday.

THE MASTERS

AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) — Brooks Koepka is in a three-way share of the lead at the Masters with Jon Rahm and Viktor Hovland. Koepka is trying to regain his reputation as a major player. Right now he gets attention as a surprise defector to Saudi-based LIV Golf. All he cares about his having healthy legs. He opened with a 65. Rahm was even more spectacular in his round of 65. That’s because he four-putted for double bogey on the first hole. He followed with seven birdies and an eagle. Hovland played bogey-free. Tiger Woods limped his way to a 74 and was nine back. Fargo-native Tom Hoge shot a 74 and sits at +2. Hoge won the Par-3 contest on Wednesday with a hole-in-one.

TWINS-MARLINS

MIAMI (AP) — Sandy Alcantara pitched the Major Leagues’ first complete game this season, a three-hitter that led the Miami Marlins to a 1-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner pitched six of the big leagues’ 36 complete games last season. He struck out five and walked one in a 1-hour, 57-minute game that was shortest of the season. Avisaíl Garcia homered in the second inning for the game’s only run. Twins starter Kenta Maeda, who missed last season after having Tommy John surgery, struck out nine before leaving in the sixth with apparent arm fatigue. The 34-year-old Maeda (0-1), who had not pitched since Aug. 21, 2021, allowed three hits and threw 79 pitches. The Twins lost for the first time after starting the season with four straight victories. Twins RHP Pablo López (1-0, 0.00) will start the series finale against his former club this afternoon. TWINS HOME OPENER

MIAMI (AP) — The Minnesota Twins’ home opener against World Series champion Houston Astros was postponed from Thursday afternoon because bad weather and cold is forecast. The game was rescheduled for Friday, originally an off-day. Right-hander Sonny Gray will remain the Twins’ scheduled starter against the Astros. “There are times during the year, where games are moved, we have to shuffle a lot of different things,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli before Tuesday’s game at Miami. “In this instance it doesn’t really change much.” The Twins opened the season with a three-game sweep at Kansas City before their current three-game set against Miami. “We talked to Sonny very early on, told him this could be a possibility,” Baldelli said. “He said that’s not going to affect his bullpen. Was not going to affect his throwing program. It doesn’t really affect any of our other guys much. It’s really a flip-flopping of the days without much adjustment.”

The Warriors had their nine-game home winning streak snapped and missed a chance to boost their playoff positioning. A victory also would have clinched Sacramento’s first postseason berth since 2006. The Kings, coached by former Golden State top assistant Mike Brown, will try to end the longest playoff drought in NBA history Monday night at home against Minnesota.

MASON CITY, IA (MINOTAUROS) – The Minotauros went to North Iowa looking to improve their position in the playoff race but a bad third period Saturday night saw them fail to walk away with the sweep they needed to pull closer to Aberdeen.

On Friday night the Tauros jumped out to an early lead scoring just 4:51 into the game with captain Trevor Stachowiak firing a shot off the cross bar an in just 4:51 into the contest. The Tauros would pour it on for the rest of the period striking three more times to take a 4-0 lead into the locker room. Colby Joseph picked up his tenth of the season redirecting a pass from Nick O’Hanisain while the Tauros were on the power play to make it 2-0 Tauros. Chase LaPinta made it 3-0 with his 29th of the season when he retrieved his own rebound and lifted a backhander in. Blake Steenerson then added his first junior goal late in the period off of a feed from Joe Blackley who had two assists in the period. From there the Tauros leaned on goaltender Noah Rupprecht getting outshot 28-15 the rest of the game. The Bulls did not break through until early in the third when a puck bounced off of Logan Dombrowsky’s chest and in. A couple more goals with less than five minutes left for North Iowa increased the drama but with just over two minutes left Joseph was able to draw a penalty sending the Tauros to the power play helping them kill the rest of the clock.

Saturday night the first period passed scoreless and while the Tauros were outshot 17-10 in the frame they had the better of the scoring chances. The offenses exploded in the second period starting just 1:08 in with John Emmons ripping a shot just over Mitch Day’s shoulder to give the Tauros the lead. Jackson Bisson would knot the game at one 7:31 later with a quick shot off the draw. In the middle portion of the period the teams would trade shorthanded goals first Kolby Amici on a hard working goal stole the puck behind the Bulls net and cut to the front beating Day five hole with a backhand. Just over two minutes later Tristan Kimmen was awarded a penalty shot after it was ruled he was slashed on a breakaway and he converted to once again tie the game at two. But with just 22 seconds left in the period Nick Sewecke battled in front and on his third whack picked up his fifth of the season to make it 3-2 Tauros heading into the third. The Bulls would tie the game early in the third but LaPinta would answer back restoring the lead with 12:35 to play in regulation. The goal was LaPinta’s 30th of the season making him just the second Tauro ever to post 30 markers in a single year. A pair of miscues however just 18 second apart late in the period would see the Tauros fall behind for the first time all weekend as the Bulls Nolan Abraham and Simone Dadie would give the Bulls a 5-4 lead. Try as they might the Tauros could not find the equalizer and had to settle for a split on the weekend.

Next up for the Tauros is a weekend trip to Aberdeen for a battle for the fourth and final playoff spot in the Central Division. After that the Tauros will return home for their final regular season home series of the season on April 7th and 8th against the Austin Bruins.

MINOT STATE BASEBALL

ELKHORN, Neb. (MSU) – After battling the winter weather just to get on the field, the Minot State baseball team battled its way to a split with Augustana on Thursday in NSIC action. The Vikings (15-10 overall, 4-1 NSIC), host for the neutral-site game, scored a 4-3 comeback win to start the doubleheader, but the Beavers (13-4, 4-1) bounced back strong and won the nightcap 9-5.

GAME 1 | Augustana 4, Minot State 3
Despite picking up eight hits in the ballgame and out-hitting Augustana, Minot State was unable to push across more runs, as the Beavers lost to the Vikings 4-3 in Thursday’s first game. Junior Craig Schmich (2-1) started and took the loss on the mound. Senior Derek Kay led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-4 in the ballgame with a triple and two RBI. Junior Brent Riddle put together a standout effort as well, going 1-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Junior Martin Rodriquez also helped out, going 2-for-3 for Minot State.
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Riddle put Minot State on the board with a two-out solo home run off senior Caleb Kranz. The Vikings then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the fifth. Minot State picked up a couple on a two-run triple from Kay, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-2. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Augustana scored two times over the remaining two innings to grab the 4-3 win.

GAME 2 | Minot State 9, Augustana 5
Junior Mark Ossanna collected four hits to help power the Minot State Beavers over the Augustana Vikings 9-5 on Thursday in the nightcap of an NSIC doubleheader. Senior Garrett Nicholson (1-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State. The southpaw went 0.1 shutout innings without giving up a hit, allowing one walk and striking out one. Junior Austin Loeb also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing one scoreless inning while allowing no hits, with one walk and one strikeout. In addition to his four hits, Ossanna had a double, a walk and an RBI to lead the Beavers. Senior Carter Paine compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Senior Derek Kay also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in five trips to the plate while adding a triple and an RBI.

The Beavers were trailing 1-0 in the second inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-run homer from Paine. The Beavers then held the Vikings scoreless before getting back on the board the very next inning. Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the Beavers lead to 4-1. Augustana narrowed Minot State’s lead to 4-3 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 6-3 in the fifth inning. The Beavers scored twice, with one run coming across on junior Shane Kary’s single. The Vikings fought back, closing the gap to 6-5 until Minot State added some insurance in the eighth. The Beavers pushed across two runs in the frame, punctuated with an RBI triple off the bat of Kay, bringing the score to 8-5 in favor of Minot State. The Beavers kept Augustana off the board before expanding their lead to 9-5 the following inning. Senior Matt Malone came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The score remained 9-5 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers coasted to the win.

Minot State continues on the road this weekend, playing Minnesota State, Mankato on Sunday in Elkhorn, Nebraska, in a doubleheader scheduled to start at noon. The games will be home games for the Beavers, who also play the Mavericks at noon Monday in a single game, which also will be a home contest for Minot State.

MINOT STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (MSU) – The Beavers are National Champions once again! One goal late in the second period and 19 saves by goalie Jake Anthony proved to be just enough Tuesday night as the No. 1 Minot State men’s hockey team held on to beat No. 3 Adrian (Mich.), claiming the third ACHA Division I National Championship in program history. Josh Pederson scored the lone goal of the title game with 2 minutes, 25 seconds left in the second period, giving the Beavers (35-3-0 overall) all the offense they needed as Anthony turned aside all 19 shots by the Bulldogs, sealing the win. The shutout was the sixth of the season for Anthony.

Minot State marched to the title with four straight wins, the final three in dramatic fashion. After opening the ACHA National Tournament with an 8-0 rout of No. 17 Michigan-Dearborn on Friday night, the Beavers then needed overtime to get past the quarterfinals and semifinals. Sunday, Minot State beat No. 8 Indiana Tech 4-3 in overtime, then rallied to force overtime where they topped No. 5 Liberty 3-2 on Monday night.

The Beavers claimed their third National Championship with a thrilling 1-0 victory, adding to their 2018-19 and 2012-13 National titles. Minot State’s senior captain, Sheldon, also was named tournament MVP.

MINOT STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (MSU) – The Beavers simply refused to lose and now find themselves in the game they’ve been chasing for the past 12 months: The ACHA National Championship game. For the second straight night, the No. 1-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team needed overtime but the Beavers managed to find a way to win, beating No. 5-ranked Liberty 3-2 in the national semifinals Monday night. The win sends Minot State to today’s title game at 7 p.m. (CT) against No. 3-ranked Adrian (Mich.), which beat Ohio 8-5 in Monday night’s other semifinal. The Beavers advance to play for the program’s third National Championship which has been the team’s focus for the past 12 months after an early exit from last year’s national tournament, now a distant memory for a resilient Minot State team that erased a 2-0 deficit in the third period against the Flames.

Liberty scored two goals just 5 minutes, 37 seconds apart late in the first period, then rode goalie Hunter Virtostek, who finished the night with 61 saves. Fourteen of those saves came in the first period, and 20 more in the second as Liberty clung to the 2-0 lead until Minot State’s senior captain, Davis Sheldon, finally changed the game’s momentum, scoring a power-play goal off assists from Reid Arnold and Joey Moffatt 1:11 into the third. Having found a way to get the puck past Virtostek, the Beavers (34-3-0 overall) kept working hard looking for the equalizer and finally found it late in regulation as Josh Pederson tied the score at 2-2 with just 3:51 left in the third period off a Christian Kadolph assist. That sent the game into overtime, the Beavers second straight venture into the extra session as they needed overtime to dispatch Indiana Tech, 4-3, in Sunday night’s quarterfinals. Once again, Minot State prevailed in the extra period, outshooting Liberty 9-5 and finally putting the game-winner behind Virtostek 15:17 into overtime as Moffatt scored to send the Beavers into Tuesday’s National Championship contest. Sheldon and Kadolph assisted on the game-winner for Minot State, which got 29 saves from Jake Anthony in goal.

Now Minot State takes on the Adrian Bulldogs (37-2-2), a team the Beavers are 6-3 against head-to-head, but a team whose last win over the Beavers came 6-1 in the 2021 National Championship game.

MINOT STATE WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BOSTON, Mass. (MSU) – The outcome proved disheartening, but head coach Ryan Miner was anything but disappointed. The third-ranked Minot State women battle their way into the ACHA Division I National Championship game for the first time since the 2019-2020 season, and led early against two-time defending champion Liberty, but the Flames grabbed a third-period lead then held off a Beaver comeback charge to win a third straight crown, 3-2 on Monday. Seniors Ensley Fendelet, Alisha O’Hara, Jordan Kulbida, Denali Sigurdson, Sydney Spicer, Jordan Ivanco, Ensley Fendelet, and Megan Norris wrapped up their careers at Minot State as runner-up national champions.

The Beavers (24-11-2 overall) nearly battled their way to the title as Norris scored a power-play goal off assists from Sigurdson and Paige Ackerman for a 1-0 lead with 8 minutes, 54 seconds gone in the title game. The Flames stole the game’s momentum, though, with a late first-period goal by Madison Glynn, her first of three in the contest just 52 seconds before the intermission. That provided a spark that Liberty used to take the lead as Glynn scored 2:42 into the second, and there it stayed for more than 27 minutes of action until Glynn netted her third of the day with 10:13 left in regulation. Trailing 3-1, the Beavers refused to go quietly as Riley Ball cut into the margin with 3:32 left off assists from Kulbida and Ackerman. Close, the Beavers couldn’t complete the comeback though, despite peppering Flames goalie Amanda Storey with 17 third-period shots, as Liberty held on for the one-goal win. Minot State’s Haylie Biever finished with 22 saves on the day.

MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State’s Reegan Floyd dominated in the circle for the Beavers this weekend as she turned in career milestones. A first collegiate no-hitter and a career-high 13 strikeouts on Saturday were part of a huge weekend for the sophomore from Susanville, California who was honored by the NSIC on Monday as she was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week. The honor is the first this season for both Floyd and the Minot State softball team which swept visiting Regina in a four-game series in the Air-Supported Dome on the MSU campus on Saturday and Sunday. Floyd set the tone for that sweep as she struck out 13 of the 17 batters she faced in an 8-0, 5-inning no-hitter against the Cougars in the first of the four-game series. Improving to 5-5 on the season with the win, Floyd also added in one more inning of work in the circle on the weekend as she pitched the final inning of a 9-0, 5-inning win on Sunday. While she did allow a hit in her second appearance, she also added three more strikeouts to her total for the weekend. Floyd and the Beavers (13-9 overall) now are off until next week when they host the University of Mary in a doubleheader on Tuesday, March 28, starting at noon to open NSIC play. The doubleheader will be played either at the Air-Supported Dome on the MSU campus or at the South Hill Softball Complex.

MINOT STATE FOOTBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – You can feel the excitement building amongst the players and staff, and it spread to the turf at First Western Bank Field as the start of the Ian Shields era kicked off this morning at 6 a.m. Shields, Minot State’s new head football coach, begins building his Beaver program that day with the first of 15 spring football practices culminating in the Minot State Spring Game on April 22. A group of returners about 85 strong suited up for spring practice and the chance to learn a new system under the guidance of new coaches. Working hard in strength and conditioning, what Coach Shields calls the team’s “Fourth Quarter Program,” but now it’s time for the players to learn the Xs and Os that they’ll take to the turf when the 2023 season begins for real with the home and season opener on Thursday, Aug. 31, against Southwest Minnesota State at 7 p.m. Learning the fundamentals in all facets of the game will be a big part of spring practice for the Beavers. “We’re at 100 level; we’re not skipping to the 400 level right away, it’s only lower-division courses as far as the football-side of it’s concerned,” Minot State’s new coach said. “Get the great fundamentals started, good techniques, get our systems in place and our terminologies in place, and put our program in place.

BOSTON, Mass. (MSU)– Timing is everything, ask anyone. Better yet, ask the Minot State women’s hockey team who scored just its second win this winter over rival Midland in eight tries this season, but the timing couldn’t be more perfect. Battling in a scoreless deadlock into the third period, senior All-American Jordan Kulbida broke the tie for the third-ranked Beavers who then hung on for a 1-0 upset of second-ranked Midland, sending Minot State into the ACHA National Championship game today at Noon (CT). The Beavers will play top-ranked Liberty (Va.) for the ACHA National Championship. Minot State will be playing in its third title game, the first since the 2018-19 season, and will be looking for its first women’s hockey national championship.

Minot State (24-10-2 overall) earned its title shot with stingy defense and determination as Haylie Biever turned aside all 36 shots she faced from Midland, her second shutout of the season. With the game scoreless early in the third period, Kulbida netted her fifth goal of the national tournament and the lone goal of the game with 5 minutes, 36 seconds gone in the stanza off a Sydney Spicer assist. And that was the game. From there the determined Beavers held tough, fending off the Warriors for the shutout win, a very timely Minot State victory, the team’s first against Midland since a 4-3 overtime win back in December.

MINOT STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (MSU) – The Beavers survived a thriller, but the key is, they survived. Troy Hamilton scored 12 minutes, 8 seconds into overtime, lifting the No. 1 Minot State men’s hockey team to a 4-3 win over eighth-ranked Indiana Tech in the quarterfinals of the ACHA National Tournament on Sunday night. With the win the Beavers advance to face a familiar foe in Liberty (Va.) in the semifinals tonight at 7 p.m. (CT). The two teams met four times this season with Minot State winning three of the four contests.

After rolling to an opening 8-0 win at nationals on Friday night, it look like things would be easy for the Beavers again Sunday as Reece Henry and Drew Carter scored 19 seconds apart midway through the first period. With Minot State set to break the game open, instead, Indiana Tech goalie Ty Barnhill clamped down, allowing just one early third-period goal to the Beavers and setting his team up for a comeback. Barnhill finished with 45 saves. Indiana Tech’s comeback started as the Warriors scored with 6:33 left in first, then they netted the lone goal of the second period, sending the game into the third period tied 2-2. Minot State (33-3-0 overall) tried to break free as Carter Barley scored a power-play goal with 4:37 gone in the third, but a determined Warrior squad tied it with 3:11 left in regulation to force overtime. Equally determined, Minot State thwarted Indiana Tech’s upset intentions as Jake Anthony made three overtime saves before Hamilton netted the winner with 12:08 gone in the extra session and sent the Beavers into the semifinals. Davis Sheldon and Connor Navrot assisted on the OT winner, while Reid Arnold, Josh Pederson, Landyn Cochrane, Joey Moffatt, Christian Kadolph, and Barley added assists on the other Minot State goals in the win.

ST. GEORGE, Kan. (MSU) – The long road trip to Kansas didn’t throw off the Minot State baseball team (11-3 overall, 2-0 NSIC), which opened NSIC play Sunday sweeping a doubleheader from Sioux Falls, beating the Cougars 10-3 and 12-4 in the neutral-site contests at Rock Creek Senior High School. Brent Riddle led the offensive, going 4-for-9 in the twinbill with 3 RBIs in each win while Trevyn Badger picked up the game one win striking out 10 Sioux Falls batters, and Bryant Bagshaw won game No. 2 with 6 Ks on the mound. The two teams meet again today to wrap up the three-game NSIC series with the first pitch scheduled for Noon in Kansas.

MINOT STATE WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

MINOT, N.D. Calley Olsen dominated in the circle in the first game, an 8-0, 5-inning mercy-rule win for the Beavers who plated five in their final at-bat, then Izzy Penner and Brooklyn Morrison teamed up to plate five of Minot State’s runs in a 9-0, 5-inning win to close out the series. MINOT STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (MSU) – Game No. 1, no problem. Following the example set by the Minot State women one night before, the top-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team steam-rolled to a first-round, shutout win at the ACHA National Tournament. Getting goals from eight different players, the Beavers beat No. 17 Michigan-Dearborn, 8-0 on Friday night. On Thursday, the third-ranked Minot State women rolled past Miami (Ohio) 7-0 in their ACHA National opener. With the win, the Beavers (32-3-0 overall) move into the quarterfinals on Sunday night at 7 p.m. (CT) against the winner of Saturday night’s first-round matchup between No. 9 Maryvillle (Mo.) and No. 8 Indiana Tech.

Jay Buchholz got the onslaught started, scoring the eventual game-winner with 5 minutes, 49 seconds gone in the first period off assists from Sheldin Howard and Joey Moffatt. Troy Hamilton pushed the lead to 2-0 just 3:03 later off assists from Wayde Johannesson and Connor Navrot, then Beavers captain Davis Sheldon scored with 3:57 left before the first intermission off a Brayden Pawluk assist, and the rout was underway. Cochrane pushed the lead with 4-0 midway through the second period, then Pawluk and Drew Carter scored 20 seconds apart for a commanding 6-0 advantage at the end of two periods. Reece Henry and Buchholz assisted on Cochrane’s goal, Minot State goalie Jake Anthony assisted on Pawluk’s goal, and Cochrane and Christian Kadolph assisted on Carter’s goal. Minot State then got third-period goals from Moffatt and Reid Arnold to ice the win. Eric Soar and Buchholz assisted on Moffatt’s goal, and Sheldon and Moffatt set up Arnold’s final score. Anthony finished with 16 saves in goal for the Beavers, recording his fifth shutout of the season.

UND MEN’S HOCKEY

ST. PAUL, Minn. (UND) – Zach Okabe scored at 5:45 of overtime to lead No. 7 St. Cloud State to a 3-2 victory over No. 17 North Dakota in the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Semifinals from the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. UND (18-15-6) sees its season come to an end in overtime for the third straight year and fifth time in the last six seasons. The Fighting Hawks held a 2-1 lead heading into the third period on a goal from Judd Caulfield just past the midway point of the contest, but Jami Krannila knotted the game with his 20th tally of the season on a rush at 5:06 of the final stanza to send the game into the extra session. In the overtime, Griffin Ness, who was last weekend’s hero against Omaha on Sunday to send UND to St. Paul, nearly had a chance to win it, but the puck rolled off his stick with a yawning cage before Okabe struck less than two minutes later to send the Huskies (23-12-3) into the championship game against No. 7 seed Colorado College. Drew DeRidder finished with 18 saves on 21 shots in his final collegiate game, collecting only his second loss in his last 10 starts. The fifth year was crucial in the dying moments of regulation, making a trio of grade-A stops to prevent SCSU from grabbing a late winner.

North Dakota jumped out to a 1-0 lead early in the contest, with Ethan Frisch burying a power play goal on a great passing play from Jake Schmaltz and Jackson Blake for the senior’s seven tally of the season. SCSU answered back with a power play goal of its own from Veeti Miettinen to even the game at 1-1 after 20 minutes of play. UND took control in the second period, outshooting the Huskies by an 11-3 margin and moving back in front on the tally from Caulfield to carry the lead and the momentum into the final frame. It was SCSU who had a bit more jump to begin the third; however, eventually tying the game at 2-2 before a back-and-forth remainder of the period sent the game into overtime. Following a great penalty kill and a bevy of chances for the Fighting Hawks, it was St. Cloud State who ended the game on Okabe’s rush to the net and backhander over DeRidder to hand UND only its second loss in overtime in 11 contests.

WOLVES-BULLS

CHICAGO (AP) — DeMar DeRozan scored a season-high 49 points, Zach LaVine finished with 39 and the Chicago Bulls beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 139-131 in double overtime. Nikola Vucevic added 21 points and 11 rebounds. It was 132-129 when Vucevic brought the Bulls bench to its feet with a thunderous one-handed dunk for a three-point play with just over a minute left. Minnesota’s Naz Reid drove for a layup to make it a four-point game. But DeRozan made four free throws in the final 36 seconds to help Chicago come away with a wild win. Minnesota All-Star Anthony Edwards left with a sprained right ankle in the first quarter. Edwards was hurt late in the first quarter when he landed awkwardly after jumping while throwing a pass. He stayed down clutching his ankle before being helped to the back, and coach Chris Finch wasn’t sure how long he’ll be out, though Edwards wasn’t ruling out playing at Toronto today.

VIKINGS-FREE AGENTS

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings agreed to terms on a contract with former Green Bay defensive end Dean Lowry on Friday, bringing in a replacement for the departed Dalvin Tomlinson. Lowry was a free agent who played the last seven years with the Packers. He started 80 of 111 games with 27 tackles for loss and 15 1/2 sacks and played multiple seasons there with current Vikings assistants Mike Smith and Mike Pettine on staff. Lowry is the latest in a long line of players to go directly from Green Bay to rival Minnesota, following outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith and cornerback Chandon Sullivan last year. Sullivan became a free agent. Smith remains under contract. Tomlinson was a free agent who signed with Cleveland. The Vikings also re-signed backup offensive lineman Austin Schlottman for depth behind center Garrett Bradbury and the guard spots.

MINOT STATE WOMEN’S HOCKEY

BOSTON, Mass. (MSU) – The trip to Boston started just the way the Beavers wanted late Thursday night: With a convincing victory. All-time career shutout leader Jordan Ivanco made 16 saves in goal for the third-ranked Minot State women’s hockey team, and her teammates unleashed an early offensive assault as the Beavers skated to a 7-0 win over No. 10-ranked Miami (Ohio) in the final first-round game of the ACHA Division I Women’s National Tournament.

Freshman Cameron Schmidt got things started for Minot State in her first trip to nationals as she scored what proved to be the game-winner just 3 minutes, 24 seconds into the action off an assist from Riley Ball. That opened the floodgates on a goal-rush for the Beavers (22-10-2 overall) who put four pucks in the net in a 3 minute, 14 second stretch. Jordan Kulbida, fresh off being named an ACHA Second Team All-American earlier in the week, made it 2-0 just 56 seconds later with an unassisted goal, then Gracie Perry also scored unassisted 1:12 after that for a commanding 3-0 lead. Kulbida finished off the fast start with her second of the game with just 6:38 gone from the first-period clock, putting Minot State well on its way to victory in front 4-0. Megan Norris assisted on Kulbida’s second of the day. From there, the Beavers kept tacking on insurance goal after insurance goal as Paige Ackerman scored with 8 seconds left before the first intermission, off a Kulbida assist, then Norris scored 1:14 into the second period off an Ackerman assist. Ball then capped the scoring for Minot State, putting away an assist from Norris with 1:29 gone in the third period for the 7-0 victory. The shutout was the 18th of Ivanco’s record-setting career at Minot State.

A victory that sends Minot State into the national quarterfinals on Saturday when the Beavers play Maryville (Mo.) at noon (CT). Miami plays a loser-out game Friday against Arizona State. The Beavers now face a Saints team that beat Arizona State 2-0 on Thursday. The teams played twice to open the 2022-23 season back on Oct. 7 and 8 with Minot State beating the Saints 5-4 on Friday and the Saints winning 2-1 on Saturday.

NORTH DAKOTA HOCKEY-HONORS

ST. PAUL, Minn. (UND) – A pair of North Dakota student-athletes were honored on Thursday evening at the annual NCHC Awards Celebration from the St. Paul Event Center. Freshman forward Jackson Blake was named NCHC Rookie of the Year while senior defenseman Ethan Frisch earned NCHC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year to headline the banquet.

Blake led all NCHC rookies in conference-only scoring with 29 points, tying for second among all players in 24 NCHC games. It’s the third-most points by a freshman in conference play in NCHC history. Blake scored 10 goals and added 19 assists, which were second-most in conference play this year and first among freshmen. The Carolina Hurricanes draft pick was a two-time NCHC Rookie of the Month this year and finished the regular season with 40 points (15g/25a) in 35 games. The 40 points rank second among NCHC rookies and fourth among all NCHC players. The freshman is the third player at North Dakota to win NCHC Rookie of the Year, joining Brock Boeser in 2015-16 and Shane Pinto in 2019-20. Blake has registered 13 multi-point games this season, is only the 14th rookie at North Dakota since 1999-00 to have at least 15 goals in his first season and the sixth freshman with 40-plus points since the turn of the century.

Frisch earned the league’s most prestigious academic award, becoming the second UND player to be selected for the honor (Nick Mattson – 2015). The defenseman is a four-time NCHC All-Academic Team, NCHC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and three-time AHCA All-America Scholar during his career while also contributing nearly 40 hours of community service to multiple local events and charities. On the ice, the marketing major has appeared in 125 games with 19 goals and 28 assists for 46 points. In those 125 contests, Frisch has only been whistled for 26 penalties and is a plus-23 rating. The Moorhead, Minn., native currently paces the NCHC with 67 blocked shots this season and has 127 blocks over the last two years.

North Dakota hits the ice for the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Semifinal against No. 7 St. Cloud State tonight at 7:37 p.m. from the Xcel Energy Center.

NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL-BRACKETS

UNDATED (AP) – From No. 13 seed Furman beating fourth-seeded Virginia to No. 15 Princeton defeating second-seeded Arizona, most NCAA Tournament brackets were busted Thursday before the sun went down. The NCAA March Madness Twitter account posted after Thursday’s late games concluded that only 787 brackets of unspecified millions remained perfect. Numbers were similar elsewhere. In ESPN’s Tournament Challenge bracket game, only 658 perfect brackets remained by the end of the first day. More than 20 million had gotten at least one of the 16 games wrong. Furman received a decent amount of support. The Paladins were picked to win their opener in 18.2% of ESPN’s brackets. Only 6.6% picked Princeton to beat Arizona, and the Wildcats going down did tremendous damage to many brackets. They were picked in 4.9% of brackets to cut down the nets at the national championship game. Arizona was a popular pick at CBS Sports, too, appearing on 96.9% of brackets win its opener, 84.9% to make the Sweet 16, 55.2% to make the Elite Eight, 21.5% to reach the Final Four and 5% to win it all.
