MINOT, ND – The Des Lacs-Burlington Lakers improved to 2-0 on the season as they held off Velva 52-45 on Saturday at the Minot State Dome. Rylan Olson was one of three Lakers in double figures with 17 points, including four made 3’s. Carson Yale scored 16 and Ty Hughes add 13 for DLB. The Aggies were led by Reggie Bruner with 11 points, while Preston Craft and Ben Schepp each added 10. Velva starts the season 0-1.

MINOT STATE TRACK & FIELD

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State head coach Greggmar Swift said he was excited to see what freshman sprinter Summer Krebsbach could do. Making her collegiate debut Saturday, the speedster from Max, North Dakota, went ahead and set a new NCAA Division II school record in her first meet as she finished fourth in the 60-meter dash at the Marauder Indoor Open hosted by the University of Mary. Krebsbach was fourth in 8.01 seconds in the finals of the event in her first collegiate meet, breaking the D-II record of 8.09 seconds run by Mary Roy in 2014. She also added a ninth-place finish in the 200 meters in her first meet, clocking a time of 27.61 seconds for the Beavers, who didn’t stop there in Coach Swift’s debut, as newcomer Chase Snyder added a victory in his first Minot State meet, and returning hurdler Nathan Trujillo-Aragon also added a win for the Beavers.

 

Synder, a sophomore thrower from Lake Andes, South Dakota, won the men’s shot put at the meet with a throw of 50 feet 7.5 inches. And while not a school record, it nearly was as Snyder’s mark ranks third in Minot State’s D-II era. And also adding a win was Trujillo-Aragon who blazed his way to victory in the 8.59 seconds, the second-fastest time in Minot State’s D-II era. Trujillo-Aragon clocked the fastest time of 8.47, as well, in 2021. While they led the way, the Beavers also got a second- and third-place finish from Corbin Harris and Hunter Clark in the men’s weight throw as Harris had a distance of 50-10.75 and Clark a throw of 50-4, and Dallas Reese added a third-place finish in the men’s shot put with a throw of 47-9.25. On the women’s side, Chloe Gunderson also added a second-place finish in the shot out with a throw of 40-4.75. Having broken the ice on the indoor track and field season, the Beavers now get a month off for the Christmas and New Year’s breaks and return to action back in Bismarck, North Dakota, competing at the Mike Thorson Open hosted by the University of Mary on January 14.

UND MEN’S BASKETBALL

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Alex Schumacher hit the winning jumper as time expired in overtime, Cameron Tyson scored 24 points, and Seattle U defeat North Dakota 80-78. With time running out in the extra period, Tyson missed a 3-pointer but Schumacher grabbed the rebound and hit a fall-away 16-footer to win it. Seattle scored 51 points in the second half after trailing 36-19 at halftime. The Redhawks led 70-67 late in the final minute of regulation but allowed a three-point play by Jalun Trent to send it to overtime. Elijah Brooks led the way for the Fightin’ Hawks with 17 points and eight rebounds.

NDSU MEN’S BASKETBALL

 

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – Montana shot 67 percent in the second half to pull away from the North Dakota State men’s basketball team, with the Grizzlies winning 82-75 on Saturday night inside the Scheels Center. Montana shot 57 percent for the game and made 18-of-27 shots in the second half. The Bison led by nine points late in the first half and held a 37-33 advantage at halftime. Montana outscored NDSU 49-38 in the second half. Montana improved to 5-5 on the season, while NDSU fell to 2-9 overall. The game was tied at 55-55 with eight minutes remaining before Montana pieced together a 10-1 run. Josh Bannan scored 27 points for the Griz to lead all scorers. Junior Boden Skunberg finished with a career-high 22 points and seven rebounds for NDSU. Grant Nelson added 19 points for the Bison, and Jacari White had 15. NDSU shot 41 percent for the game and made 7-of-21 (33 percent) from beyond the arc.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) — Filip Gustavsson stopped 35 shots for his first NHL shutout as the Minnesota Wild beat the Vancouver Canucks 3-0 to snap a two-game skid. Matt Boldy, Connor Dewar and Sam Steel scored and Mats Zuccarello had two assists for the Wild, who were playing for the third time in four nights. Spencer Martin had 30 saves for the Canucks, who snapped a three-game win streak while getting shut out for the first time this season. Kirill Kaprizov saw his franchise-record 14-game point streak end. Gustavsson, making his 32nd career start, had four saves in the first period, 19 in the second and 12 in the third.

WOLVES-BLAZERS

 

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Damian Lillard had 36 points and eight assists, Anfernee Simons added 31 points and the Portland Trail Blazers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves 124-118 on Saturday night. Portland overcame a 10-point deficit in the second half to beat Minnesota in the opener of a two-game set. They will meet again in Portland on Monday night. Jerami Grant added 17 points for Portland, and Jusuf Nurkic had 15 rebounds. Drew Eubanks scored 10 points, two on a ferocious dunk on Rudy Gobert. Anthony Edwards led Minnesota with 26 points, and Gobert and D’Angelo Russell had 24 points apiece.
