MSU MEN’S BASKETBALL

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State offense put on a ball-movement clinic on the road Tuesday, recording 19 assists on 28 made shots, but the Beaver men’s basketball team fell to the Mary Marauders, 72-69, in the NSIC opener for both teams. The Beavers (1-2 overall, 0-1 NSIC) had three players score in double figures, led by Cam’ron Dunfee who had 17 points. Jaxon Gunville tacked on 13 points and six assists, and Connor Hollenbeck helped out with 11 points, six rebounds, six assists, and three steals. The Minot State offense was very productive from beyond the arc, pouring in eight threes on 21 attempts. Dunfee was the most prolific shooter for the Beavers, draining three treys in the contest. Minot State forced 15 Mary turnovers while committing 10 themselves in Tuesday’s game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 14 points on the offensive end of the floor. Hollenbeck’s three steals led the way for Minot State.

MSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

 

RAPID CITY, S.D. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s basketball team fought back from a 10-point deficit at 31-21 with 9:03 remaining in the third quarter to knock off the host South Dakota Mines Hardrockers 62-58 on the road Tuesday in non-conference action. The Beavers (3-2 overall) had two players score in double figures, led by Kate Head who had 15 points and five assists. Lorelei McIver tacked on 14 points off the bench and Emma Mogen added six points and three blocks. Vilborg Jonsdottir pulled down four offensive rebounds to pace an offense that racked up second-chance opportunities for Minot State, grabbing 15 boards and turning them into 16 second-chance points. The Minot State defense was a problem in Tuesday’s game, forcing 20 South Dakota Mines turnovers while the Beavers committed just 14. Those takeaways turned into 19 points on the other end of the floor. Breianna Smestad led the way individually for the Beavers with four steals.

UND MEN’S BASKETBALL

 

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Ten players scored for the North Dakota men’s basketball team in the 92-61 win over Wisconsin-Stout inside the Betty Engelstad Sioux Center on Tuesday night. B.J. Omot paced UND (3-2) with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting, including two makes from deep. It is Omot’s highest scoring performance of the young season. Treysen Eaglestaff also netted a season-high 17 points in 18 minutes, going 6-of-12 from the field. A’Jahni Levias not only scored his first points as a Fighting Hawk but poured in a total of 15 of them. He also hauled in five boards and recorded two steals. Brian Mathews had the first double-double of his career, throwing down 12 points while cleaning the glass with a career-high 12 rebounds. North Dakota went on a couple runs in the second half and extended its lead to as many as 35 points.

NDSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

 

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team outscored Northern Colorado, 25-8, in the fourth quarter to pick up a 68-54 win on Tuesday night at Scheels Center. After Northern Colorado (3-2) grabbed a 46-43 lead after three quarters of play, NDSU (4-0) responded with a momentum-shifting 7-0 run capped off by a triple from Elle Evans to make the score 55-48 with 7:39 to play. The Bears made one final comeback attempt trimming the deficit down to four, 58-54, with 4:04 to play. Heaven Hamling then answered with a clutch three-pointer to start a run of 10 straight points to seal the 68-54 win. Evans led the way for NDSU with a season-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Abby Schulte contributed 13 points and went 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Taylor Brown added in 11 points, while Emily Behnke netted 10 points. As a team, the Bison shot 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field and 85.7 percent (18-21) from the free throw line. NDSU also tallied 36 points in the paint and 24 points off of turnovers. NDSU, who moves to 4-0 for the first time since 2017.
