K-HEART SPORTS – FRIDAY – 11/17/23

MINOT, ND – All the top seeds won on the first day of the Class B State Volleyball Tournament. Meanwhile on the Class A side it was a long day of volleyball with no sweeps. The final match didn’t finish until 10:25 pm. Bismarck Century’s string of consecutive appearances in a Class A Volleyball State Championship match ends at 12 (2011-2022). All the matches of the tournament will be broadcast on BEK TV and streamed through their website.

MINOT, ND – The Class AAA Football All-State Teams include several players from State Champion Minot High. OL Derrick Arivett, WR Logan Conklin, and RB Tyson Ruzicka were named to the First Team Offense. DL DJ Jones andLB Michael George were named to the First Team Defense. Second Team honors went to Anthony Brown and Dylan Huber of Minot High. Ruzicka was Co-Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year in Class AAA Football and Magi head coach Chauncy Hendershot was named Coach of the Year.

UND MENS BASKETBALL
 
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – The North Dakota men’s basketball team picked up its second straight win Thursday night, defeating the Valley City State Vikings 93-63. Treysen Eaglestaff and B.J. Omot led the Fighting Hawks with 17 points, and were joined in double figures by Eli King (14), Mambourou Mara (12) and Tsotne Tsartsidze (11). King tied with Deng Mayar for the team lead with eight rebounds, while Eaglestaff led with four assists. With 16:27 left in the first half, Omot hit a corner three with the game tied at five to put NoDak ahead, and from there the Fighting Hawks would not trail again. VCSU got within one point at 11-10 later in the first half, but from there UND went on a 12-4 run to expand their lead to 23-14; with six different players scoring a basket in the stretch. Over the final 7:15 of the first half, the green and white went on a 19-4 run, with Mara with scoring seven points, to go to halftime with a 44-23 advantage. Hot shooting from the first half carried over into the second half, with the hosts hitting nine three pointers in the half and expanding their lead to as many as 36 points. The Fighting Hawks led by no less than 18 points at any point in the second half as they closed out a convincing win at home. The Fighting Hawks will head on the road for the next three games as they head to Stockton, Calif. to take on Pacific University next Monday and then go to the Central Arkansas Classic on Saturday, Nov. 25 and 26 to take on New Orleans University and Eastern Michigan.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL
 
MISSOULA, Mont. (NDSU) – Sophomore Damari Wheeler-Thomas scored a career-high 22 points to lift the North Dakota State men’s basketball team to an impressive 78-69 road win over Montana on Thursday night. NDSU senior Boden Skunberg finished with 16 points, six rebounds, four assists and no turnovers. Tajavis Miller made four three-pointers for 12 points and grabbed seven boards. Montana was picked second in the Big Sky Conference preseason poll. The two schools will meet for a rematch on Jan. 3 in Fargo. NDSU (3-2 overall) led 40-33 at halftime after shooting 54 percent in the opening period. The Bison led by as many as 17 at 66-49 with five minutes remaining. The Grizzlies trimmed the margin to three at 72-69 with 0:24 on the clock, but NDSU went 6-for-6 at the free throw line to seal the victory. NDSU led for more than 31 of the game’s 40 minutes, and the Bison committed only five turnovers in the contest. NDSU drained 9-of-23 (39 percent) from beyond the arc. The Bison will return home to host Wisconsin-Stout on Monday.
