MINOT, ND – The 9-Man Football All-State Football Teams have been named and several area players were honored. QB Walker Braaten of Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn was named to the First Team Offense along with RB Lucas Sims of Central McLean, and RB Blake Mattson and OL Nate Tastad of North Prairie. First Team Defense included Hunter Tolstad of Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn. Second Team honors went to Riley Morlock of Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood; Treyton Lesmann, Maddox Juntunen, and Brody Nordmark of Westhope-Newburg-Glenburn; as well as Brett Tastad and Cole Henderson of North Prairie. Nate Tastad of North Prairie was the Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year. The team is compiled by the North Dakota High School Coaches Association.

MVFC HONOR-UND
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (UND) – North Dakota wide receiver Red Wilson was one of four players to earn the title of Missouri Valley Football Conference Player of the Week. In the 14-10 loss at No. 6 South Dakota, Wilson helped North Dakota get off to a good start, returning the opening kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. He ended the game with three returns for 143 yards. With his return, he became just the fifth player in UND history to return the opening kickoff for a score. The 2023 season is the first time in North Dakota history that two different players have returned opening kickoffs for a touchdown in the same year: Wilson (99-yard touchdown at South Dakota) and Luke Skokna (100-yard touchdown vs. North Dakota State). North Dakota will host Illinois State on Saturday. Kickoff between the Fighting Hawks and Redbirds is slated for 1 p.m. inside the Alerus Center.

MVFC HONOR-NDSU
ST. LOUIS (NDSU) – North Dakota State right guard Jake Kubas was named Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week for the first time in his career. Kubas, a sixth-year senior from Dickinson, N.D., graded out at 90 percent with no sacks or tackles for loss allowed in North Dakota State’s 34-10 home win over Southern Illinois as the Bison improved to 7-3 overall and 4-3 in the conference. Kubas led the Bison offensive line in physicality points and helped NDSU rush for 217 yards and four touchdowns, the most yards allowed this season by Southern Illinois, which entered with the No. 3-ranked defense in the FCS. North Dakota State also completed 15 of 19 passes for 232 yards and controlled the ball for more than 38 minutes while averaging 7.0 yards per play. No. 9-ranked NDSU closes out the regular season against third-place Northern Iowa at 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at the UNI-Dome in Cedar Falls, Iowa. The Panthers are 6-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference.

SUMMIT LEAGUE HONOR-UND
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (UND) – North Dakota guard Kacie Borowicz has earned the first Summit League Women’s Basketball Peak Performer of the Week award for the 2023-24 season. Borowicz was the lone Summit League player during the opening week to score 20-plus in two contests as she racked up her fifth career weekly honor. Borowicz opened the season by pouring 29 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the floor in a road loss at Wyoming. She also went 6-for-8 from the foul stripe and added three rebounds against the Cowgirls. In UND’s home opener against Grand Canyon, the Roseau, Minn., native led all scorers with 20 points and also equaled her career-high with five steals against the Lopes. For the week, Borowicz averaged 24.5 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.0 apg and 3.0 spg for the Fighting Hawks.

VIKINGS-HICKS INJURY
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Vikings linebacker Jordan Hicks was taken to a hospital after Minnesota’s 27-19 win Sunday against the New Orleans Saints and had a procedure to alleviate pressure from a contusion in his shin. Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell said Monday that Hicks had compartment syndrome after taking a direct shot to his shin in Sunday’s game. Hicks was taken to the hospital immediately following the game and was still hospitalized a day later. “You can classify it as kind of a compartment syndrome-type thing where the pressure in that area, and the damage it can cause if not handled with the utmost level of concern like our guys showed, could have been something that could have been very serious,” O’Connell said. O’Connell said Hicks, Minnesota’s leading tackler, would likely miss this week’s game at Denver. Hicks has 87 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries while playing nearly every defensive snap for the Vikings this season. Hicks had left Sunday’s game in the first quarter with the injury and was evaluated on the sideline. But he returned late in the second quarter before leaving again in the third and being ruled out for the remainder of the game. O’Connell added that starting running back Alexander Mattison is in the concussion protocol and starting cornerback Akayleb Evans is day to day after leaving the game with a lower leg strain.
