UND HOCKEY-HONOR

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND) – For the second time in as many weeks, UND senior goaltender Ludvig Persson was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference’s Goaltender of the Week. The senior netminder shares the honor with goaltender Zach Stejskal from Minnesota Duluth and earns the recognition for the ninth time in his career. Persson earned his second straight Goaltender of the Week nod after backstopping North Dakota to a split with No. 1 and longtime rival Minnesota last weekend in Grand Forks. In Friday’s 4-0 loss, he made 28 saves while allowing three goals. The next night, he turned aside 21-of-22 shots faced in a 2-1 victory to earn the game’s second star and help UND notch its eighth win over a No. 1 team since 2014. Seven of his saves on the weekend came short-handed, as he helped NoDak finish a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. The Hindås, Sweden, native ended the series with a .925 save percentage, making 49 saves on 53 shots faced, which tied for the NCHC lead on the weekend with Stejskal. He also posted a 2.01 goals-against average against Minnesota. On the season, Persson now carries a 3-1-0 record with a .937 save percentage and a 1.51 GAA, both tops among NCHC goalies with more than one game played.

UND HOCKEY-POLLS

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Another strong weekend helped North Dakota rise again in both the USCHO.com and USA Hockey/The Rink Live polls, climbing one spot to No. 4 on Monday. UND is coming off a weekend split against No. 1 Minnesota, rebounding from a Friday defeat to take down the longtime rival, 2-1, in the finale. With that victory, NoDak improved to 8-7-2 since 2014 against top-ranked foes and 5-0-0 against Minnesota on Saturdays since 2017. The jump marks the highest ranking for the Fighting Hawks since Oct. 10, 2022, when the program was third in the nation entering the second weekend of the regular season. North Dakota closes out its six-game homestand to begin the season with a series against Minnesota State beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. from Ralph Engelstad Arena.

VIKINGS-49ERS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kirk Cousins let the ball fly for Jordan Addison earlier than he wanted to in the face of an all-out San Francisco blitz in the closing seconds of the second quarter for Minnesota, bracing for the worst after realizing the pass was underthrown. Addison won the tug-of-war battle this time with 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward and spun away for a 60-yard touchdown, and the Vikings finally pulled out a victory after three straight late lapses at home. Cousins connected with Addison for two first-half scores, Camryn Bynum intercepted Brock Purdy twice in the fourth quarter, and the Vikings held on to beat the 49ers 22-17 on Monday night. Cousins went 35 for 45 for 378 yards and no sacks. Cousins hit the 300-yard mark for the 50th time in his 12-year career. Only four others have done that by their 12th season: Drew Brees (67), Matt Ryan (64), Peyton Manning (56) and Kurt Warner (52). Purdy went 21 for 30 for 272 yards. Christian McCaffrey scored twice for the 49ers (5-2), who have a two-game losing streak for just the second time in two years. Addison, stepping up in a big way with superstar wide receiver Justin Jefferson sidelined by a hamstring injury, had seven catches for 123 yards in his breakout performance on a prime-time stage. The Vikings (3-4) visit Green Bay on Sunday.
