UND FOOTBALL
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – After going down 11 points late in the first half, North Dakota (3-2, 2-1 MVFC) ended the game on a 38-10 scoring run to defeat No. 7 Missouri State (2-3, 0-2 MVFC), 48-31, inside the Alerus Center on Saturday afternoon.
An interception led to an MSU touchdown with just over two minutes left before halftime to extend its lead to 21-10, but UND rattled off 24 straight points between that point and the early moments of the fourth quarter to claim a 34-21 lead heading into the final stanza. A Bears field goal in the first moments of the fourth quarter ended their scoring drought to trim the deficit to 34-24, but the Hawks responded five plays later with a 54-yard touchdown scamper from Isaiah Smith to extend the North Dakota lead back to 41-24.
The Hawks added another touchdown seven minutes later with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Tommy Schuster to Garett Maag to put the game out of reach for the Bears with just under five minutes to go. Missouri State would score with 1:43 left in the game but was unable to recover the ensuing onside kick and North Dakota ran out the final moments to secure the 48-31 win over Missouri State.
UND had a well-balanced attack, finishing with 515 yards of offense (248 on the ground and 267 through the air). Comparatively, MSU ended with 389 yards of offense with 271 yards passing and 118 yards rushing.

NDSU FOOTBALL
FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – Fullback Hunter Luepke accounted for 106 total yards and two touchdowns as No. 1-ranked North Dakota State picked up a 27-14 win over Youngstown State on Saturday, Oct. 1, before a homecoming crowd of 18,055 at Gate City Bank Field at the Fargodome. Kobe Johnson added a touchdown run and Griffin Crosa converted two field goals for the Bison, who won their 13th consecutive home game to improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Missouri Valley Football Conference.
Luepke scored on runs of two and 12 yards in the first quarter with the first score coming two plays after a leaping 27-yard catch over a YSU defender at the 2-yard line. He rushed 13 times for 72 yards and made two catches for 34 yards.
Youngstown State running back Jaleel McLaughlin had 17 carries for 150 yards, including a 44-yard run that gave YSU a first-and-goal at the 5 before the Bison defense stiffened. Michael Tutsie’s tackle at the goal line set up fourth-and-goal from the 1, but YSU settled for a 22-yard field goal after a false start to cut the Bison lead to 14-3.
NDSU answered with a 12-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped by Kobe Johnson’s 17-yard TD run, which came one play after Cam Miller connected with Zach Mathis for 17 yards on third-and-15. It was 21-3 at halftime.
Crosa’s 39-yard field goal with 7:45 left in the game put the Bison ahead 24-6, but McLaughlin hauled in a 35-yard touchdown pass from Mitch Davidson and the two-point conversion cut NDSU’s lead to 24-14 with 4:30 to play.
YSU nearly recovered its own onside kick, but it went out of bounds at midfield. The Bison ran nine plays with Crosa’s 38-yard field goal extending the lead to 27-14.
Linebacker Nick Kubitz had a team-high seven tackles, Tutsie made his 11th career interception, and Spencer Waege had 2.5 tackles for loss including 1.5 sacks to lead the Bison defense.

UND HOCKEY
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 4 North Dakota struck four times in the second period en route to a 5-1 exhibition win over Manitoba on Saturday night from Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Five-different Fighting Hawks found the back of the scoresheet while Drew DeRidder and Kaleb Johnson combined for 11 saves to polish off a strong opening performance from the hosts despite a shortened lineup.
Trailing 1-0 midway through the first, Griffin Ness knotted the game with a goal off a rebound to send the teams to the locker room tied after 20 minutes. Just 21 seconds into the middle stanza, Jake Schmaltz cashed in on a rebound goal of his own to put the Hawks in front, 2-1, and sparked a four-goal period.
Dylan James, making his collegiate debut, wired a shot past goaltender Brett Murphy off a face-off win to double the lead, 3-1, before Tyler Kleven struck on a slick move to the net less than a minute later and Chris Jandric put the finishing touches on the offensive frame with a goal on a 2-on-0 to build a 5-1 advantage.
UND played a majority of the final period on the disadvantage, killing off a trio of Manitoba power play opportunities to preserve the 5-1 victory.
North Dakota opens the regular season next Friday against Holy Cross.
