TWINS-ROYALS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Emilio Pagán pitched two scoreless innings after Tyler Mahle departed with right shoulder fatigue, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 4-0 on Wednesday for a three-game sweep. Jose Miranda homered for Minnesota, which is fighting with Cleveland and the Chicago White Sox for control of the crowded AL Central. Miranda finished with two hits and two RBIs, and Nick Gordon had a run-scoring double. After Mahle left in the third, Pagán (4-6), Griffin Jax, Jhoan Duran, Michael Fulmer and Trevor Megill finished Minnesota’s second straight shutout. A diving catch by center fielder Gilberto Celestino saved a run in the seventh. Mahle pitched 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball, walking one. VIKINGS-TRAINING CAMP

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — After catching COVID-19 and staying home for five days in line with the current guidelines, Kirk Cousins returned to practice Wednesday with the Minnesota Vikings for their first of two joint sessions with the visiting San Francisco 49ers. Cousins played crisply during the full-team drills against San Francisco’s defense, even uncharacteristically showing strong emotion after a completion to Adam Thielen.

Just like in the 49ers preseason game Friday against Green Bay, Trey Lance hit rookie Danny Gray on a deep ball for a long touchdown. The connection Wednesday came in a 7-on-7 drill against veteran cornerback Patrick Peterson. Lance is a Minnesota native who played at North Dakota State before being drafted No. 3 by San Francisco in 2021.

The Vikings and 49ers practice again today before Minnesota will host San Francisco in a preseason game at US Bank Stadium on Saturday at 6 pm.
