UND FOOTBALL-FREUND

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – University of North Dakota head football coach Bubba Schweigert announced Tuesday morning that Danny Freund has been elevated to associate head coach. Freund just completed his 12th season at his alma mater and his fourth season as offensive coordinator. Coach Freund has a wide range of experience, not only serving as the offensive coordinator the past four seasons but also spending time with the wide receivers (2014-18), quarterbacks (2013) and running backs (2011-12). During his time as the offensive coordinator, the Fighting Hawks have reached the FCS Playoffs three out of the last four seasons. During his time on staff, Freund has coached seven players that have reached All-America status and three players that have earned MVFC First-Team selections. He has also helped three players (Travis Toivonen, Matt Waletzko and Tyler Hoosman) reach the NFL.

Last season, Freund’s offense ranked No. 11 nationally and No. 2 in the MVFC in completion percentage, with UND QB’s completing 67.1 percent of their passes. The Hawks were also efficient in the red zone, scoring 91.5 percent of the time when in the red zone, a mark which ranked No. 6 in the country. The Fighting Hawks also chewed up the clock in 2022, averaging 33:23 minutes of offense per game to lead the MVFC and rank No. 8 in the FCS. Freund coached his first 1,000-yard rusher in a single season last year in Hoosman, who piled up 1,023 yards to rank No. 3 in UND’s Division I history. The Northern Iowa transfer had six 100-yard rushing games in 2022, including a season-high 147 yards rushing in the 48-31 win over Missouri State. Under Freund’s direction, quarterback Tommy Schuster has already cemented his place in North Dakota history as the all-time record holder for passing yards in a career (6,819), all-time completions (635) and Division I touchdown passes thrown (44). Schuster is 15 touchdown passes away from breaking the all-time record. His career completion percentage of 66.3 sits No. 3 all-time and he has averaged 20-or-more completions per game in each of the last two seasons.

Prior to his coaching career, Freund went 16-6 as a two-year starter for the Fighting Sioux, finishing his career as the program’s most accurate passer. His 68.9 career completion percentage still tops the charts, and he owns the top single-season completion mark of 71.9, which he set as a senior in 2008. He threw for 5,239 yards and 47 touchdowns in his career, which rank No. 5 and No. 3, respectively, on the all-time career lists at UND. North Dakota will begin the 2023 season on Saturday, Sept. 2, hosting Drake at 3 p.m. inside the Alerus Center.

NDSU FOOTBALL-SCHEDULE

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – North Dakota State and The Citadel have signed a home-and-home contract for two football games to be played during the 2025 and 2027 seasons. The teams will meet in the 2025 season-opener Aug. 30 in Charleston, S.C., at Johnson Hagood Stadium. NDSU will host The Citadel on Sept. 18, 2027, at the Fargodome. North Dakota State has not played The Citadel, which is a member of the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs have qualified for the FCS playoffs five times in program history including back-to-back second round appearances in 2015 and 2016.
With a road game in Nashville against Tennessee State in Week 2, the Bison will open the 2025 season with back-to-back road games for the fourth time as a Division I program and the first time since 2014 when NDSU won at Iowa State (34-14) and Weber State (24-7). NDSU is scheduled to host St. Thomas in a non-conference game Nov. 22 during a bye in the 2025 Missouri Valley Football Conference schedule. The Bison have one remaining non-conference date in 2025, which is a 12-game calendar year for the Football Championship Subdivision.

TWINS-PADRES

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The San Diego Padres used savvy baserunning and three Minnesota errors to score twice in the seventh inning and beat the Twins 6-1. Michael Wacha picked up his first win in five starts with six innings and one run allowed. Juan Soto had a season-high four hits with two doubles and a walk and Manny Machado tacked on a three-run homer in the ninth for the Padres. They are 18-3 in games when they get three runs or more. Austin Nola’s sacrifice squeeze bunt scored Ha-Seong Kim with the go-ahead run in the seventh inning.

The Twins (19-17), who lead the American League Central by two games over Cleveland, have scored six runs in their last four games. They had 28 hits in 58 innings on a 2-4 road trip last week to drop to last in MLB in batting average at .220. Cleveland’s Cal Quantrill held them to one hit in the 2-0 loss Sunday. The Twins started the fourth with back-to-back walks. Jose Miranda, who went 2 for 21 on the road trip, drove in one run with a one-out double down the left-field line. But Wacha got the next two outs to strand runners at second and third. Joey Gallo’s hitless streak reached 25 straight at-bats until he singled in the seventh, when the Twins had runners at the corners with one out. Steven Wilson entered to strike out Max Kepler and Carlos Correa to prompt boos from the crowd of 16,882 at Target Field. “I’d boo myself too, with the amount of money I’m making if I’m playing like that,” Correa said.

UP NEXT
Padres: RHP Seth Lugo (3-2, 3.21) pitches today.
Twins: RHP Pablo López (2-2, 3.77 ERA) takes the mound for the middle game of the series.

KAPP-OBIT

Former Minnesota Vikings and Cal quarterback Joe Kapp has died at the age of 85. He had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. Kapp led the Vikings to their first Super Bowl appearance and Cal to its last Rose Bowl. He also played in Canada and is the only QB to lead his team to a Rose Bowl, Super Bowl and Grey Cup. Kapp also coached at Cal for five seasons.

Kapp helped the Vikings make the playoffs before losing to Baltimore in 1968 and then threw 19 TD passes and led Minnesota to a 12-2 record the following year when he finished second in MVP voting. He ran and threw a TD pass against Cleveland to lead Minnesota to a 27-7 victory in the 1969 NFL title game. The Vikings then lost the last Super Bowl before the merger to Kansas City. Always a team-first player, Kapp was voted Most Valuable Player by the Vikings that season but refused to accept it on his stance that all 40 players on the roster were equally valuable. He coined the mantra “40 for 60,” referencing every player giving his best for all 60 minutes of the game.

“Men like Joe Kapp are the cornerstones the Minnesota Vikings franchise was built upon,” Vikings owner Mark Wilf said. “Joe’s toughness and competitive spirit defined the Vikings teams of his era, and his tenacity and leadership were respected by teammates and opponents alike.”

Kapp was survived by his second wife, Jennifer Kapp; four children and six grandchildren. His first wife, Marcia Kapp, died in 2005.
