MINOT STATE BASEBALL
BEMIDJI, Minn. (MSU) – The Minot State baseball team started its final regular-season weekend with a sweep of host Bemidji State, winning the Battle of the Beavers and punching a ticket to next week’s NSIC Tournament. Pitcher Craig Schmich led the way in the opener, a 6-1 Minot State win, then Gunnar Kozlowitz powered the offense in an 8-6 comeback win in the nightcap. Minot State (28-17 overall, 19-14 NSIC) wraps up the regular season with a final game at Bemidji State at 10 am today, then heads to Bismarck for the NSIC Tournament starting on Wednesday.
GAME 1 | Minot State 6, Bemidji State 1
Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz collected four hits to help power the Minot State Beavers past the Bemidji State Beavers 6-1 on Friday. Junior Craig Schmich (5-4) started on the mound and picked up the win for Minot State. The right-hander went six innings, giving up one run on eight hits, allowing two walks and striking out four. In addition to his four hits, Kozlowitz had a home run and three RBI to lead the Beavers. Junior Cameron Carr put together a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junior Mark Ossanna also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a walk and an RBI.
The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with a run in the top of the first inning. Kozlowitz put Minot State on the board with a two-out solo home run off junior Will Lavin. The Bemidji State Beavers failed to push any runs across before the Beavers built on their lead in the third inning. Minot State put together a three-run frame, culminating in a run-scoring single from Carr, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Beavers. Bemidji State narrowed Minot State’s lead to 4-1 before the Beavers stretched the advantage to 6-1 in the sixth inning. The Beavers recorded two runs when a single from Kozlowitz brought home sophomore Dalin Ludlow and junior Shane Kary. The score remained 6-1 for the rest of the game, as Minot State coasted to the win.
GAME 2 | Minot State 8, Bemidji State 6
The Minot State Beavers rallied from down 6-4 in the sixth inning to take down the Bemidji State Beavers 8-6 on Friday. Sophomore Jonah Prokott (3-0) got the win out of the bullpen for Minot State. The right-hander went three innings, giving up one run on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out four. Senior Garrett Nicholson also pitched well, going two shutout innings while allowing three hits, walking none and striking out three. At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Gunnar Kozlowitz, who went 3-for-5 on the day with a home run, a walk and three RBI. Senior Carter Paine furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Matt Malone also chipped in for Minot State, putting together three hits in five trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI.
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. Minot State scored three times, all of them coming across on a three-run homer off the bat of Kozlowitz. The Bemidji State Beavers then rallied to score five runs and take a 5-3 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the fifth. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Malone, which brought the score to 5-4 in favor of the Bemidji State Beavers. Bemidji State built their lead to 6-4 before the Minot State offense got back to work, overtaking the Bemidji State Beavers to grab an 8-6 advantage in the seventh. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring four runs, including a one-run bit-by-pitch to junior Mark Ossanna. The score remained 8-6 for the rest of the game, as Minot State held on for the win.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Max Kepler hit a two-run homer and Bailey Ober pitched seven innings in a combined three-hitter, sending the Minnesota Twins to a 2-0 victory over the Cleveland Guardians. Ober gave up three hits and a walk while striking out six, lowering his season ERA to 0.98 over three starts. Jorge López worked a clean eighth and Jhoan Duran pitched the ninth for his seventh save. Guardians starter Peyton Battenfield did not allow a baserunner until Christian Vázquez singled with two outs in the sixth. Kepler followed with a 440-foot blast to right field, driving in the only runs of the ballgame. The Twins have homered in a franchise-record 17 consecutive games. Kepler has 15 home runs at Progressive Field since 2016, the most by a visiting player. Battenfield worked a season-high seven innings, giving up two hits, in his fifth big-league appearance. The righty struck out seven without issuing a walk, only permitting two hard-hit balls to Vázquez and Kepler. Byron Buxton of the Twins went 0 for 3 with three strikeouts, ending his eight-game hitting streak. He also had reached base multiple times in a career-high six straight. Minnesota leads the AL Central by 4 1/2 games over the Guardians, who have lost nine of their last 13 and are a season-low four games below .500. The teams will meet 12 more times this season.
