MINOT STATE SOFTBALL
MOORHEAD, Minn. (MSU) – The Minot State softball team inched closer to clinching a postseason berth with another strong day on the diamond, taking one of two on the road against one of the NSIC leaders in Minnesota State Moorhead. Brooklyn Morrison had an RBI double and a solo home run, helping spot the Beavers (27-19 overall, 14-10 NSIC) to a three-run lead as Minot State held on to win the day’s opener, 3-2 over the Dragons on Tuesday. The Dragons, in fourth place in the NSIC standings, bounced back to take the nightcap 5-1 as the team split their NSIC doubleheader. Minot State now wraps up the regular season on the road this weekend playing at Minnesota State, Mankato in a doubleheader on Saturday, and at Concordia, St. Paul in another twinbill on Sunday.
GAME 1 | Minot State 3, Minnesota State-Moorhead 2
Junior Brooklyn Morrison collected a pair of extra-base hits for Minot State in a 3-2 win over the Minnesota State Moorhead Dragons on Tuesday. Sophomore Reegan Floyd (9-10) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing no walks and striking out two. Morrison’s two extra-base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-3 day, and included a double, a home run and two RBI. Junior Gabi Dawyduk put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. The Beavers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the fourth inning. Minot State pushed across two runs in the frame, the big blow coming on an RBI double from Morrison. The Dragons failed to push any runs across before the Beavers built on their lead in the seventh inning. Minot State picked up a run on Morrison’s leadoff home run off of sophomore Avery Steffen, which brought the Beavers lead to 3-0. Minnesota State Moorhead put two runs on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still held on for the 3-2 win.
GAME 2 | Minnesota State-Moorhead 5, Minot State 1
The Minot State Beavers fell to the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons by a final score of 5-1 in Tuesday’s second game. Junior Gabi Dawyduk (3-1) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Offensively, the Beavers were led by senior Courtney Chatburn, who went 2-for-3 on the day. Trailing 5-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the seventh inning. Junior Izzy Penner came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The ballgame ended with that seventh-inning rally falling short.

UND MEN’S BASKETBALL
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) –The North Dakota basketball team has announced the return of guard Tyree Ihenacho to their roster for the 2023-24 season Tuesday. Ihenacho spent the last two seasons at James Madison University, after spending his first season with the Fighting Hawks. He won Summit League Freshman of the year in 2020-21. The Prior Lake, Minn. native played in 23 games, with 22 starts in his freshman season. He averaged 8.7 points per game and 5.7 rebounds per game en route to being named Freshman of the Year. Over the last two seasons at James Madison, he played in 39 games with 22 starts. He totaled 46 steals in those games with 152 total points for the Dukes.
The North Dakota basketball team announced the addition of forward Deng Mayar to their roster for the 2023-24 season Tuesday. Mayar joins the team after spending this past season at Howard College in Big Spring, Texas. Mayar started all 30 games for Howard this past season, averaging almost 24 minutes per game and 11.5 points per game; shooting over 52% from the floor. He also averaged 7.2 rebounds per game, and nearly an assist per game. He racked up 32 steals and 11 blocks as well.

TWINS-YANKEES
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joe Ryan became the first five-game winner in the major leagues this season, Byron Buxton and Trevor Larnach hit two-run homers in the sixth inning and the Minnesota Twins beat New York 6-2 to clinch their first season series against the Yankees since 2001. Ryan joined Jerry Koosman in 1979 as the only Twins pitchers to win their first five starts since the franchise moved to Minnesota for the 1961 season. Minnesota and New York each had eight hits but the Twins had seven extra-base hits. New York has lost three straight for the first time this season. The Twins have won four of six games against the Yankees this year heading into their last meeting on Wednesday, the best record for Minnesota against New York since going 4-2 in 2001. Nestor Cortes (3-1) surrendered four runs — three earned — in five innings for the Yankees, ending a streak of 16 straight starts allowing three runs or fewer.

Maeda’s previous start was cut after two innings after he was hit on an ankle by a comebacker.

WOLVES-NUGGETS
DENVER (AP) — The top-seeded Denver Nuggets eliminated the Minnesota Timberwolves with a 112-109 win in Game 5 of their playoff series at Ball Arena on Tuesday night. The Nuggets got a triple-double from Nikola Jokic and 35 points from Jamal Murray to hand Michael Malone his 25th playoff win as Denver’s head coach. That surpasses the 24 wins Doug Moe won in the playoffs with the Nuggets. The Wolves were led by Anthony Edwards’ 29 points, but his 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime hit the back of the iron. Karl-Anthony Towns added 26 points for the Wolves, Rudy Gobert had 16 points and 15 rebounds before fouling out and Nickeil Alexander-Walker chipped in 14 points. The Wolves, who avoided a sweep with an overtime win in Minneapolis on Sunday, jumped out to a 25-12 lead before the Nuggets began chipping away.
A disappointing season came to an end for the Wolves, who were banged up — Karl-Anthony Towns missed 52 games with a calf injury — and never really jelled like they had hoped after the monster trade for Gobert. “The defining characteristic of this team is that we’ve always played our best basketball when we were in desperation mode,” coach Chris Finch said. “It’s not how you want to live. Again, its all credit to us. We had many points during the season to let go of the rope or give up on the moment but we never ever did. So, I love that about our guys. They kept competing. But you know a more mature team doesn’t find itself in those situations as much and that’s a part of our growth.” Finch added that the Wolves “learned a lot, too, with the two bigs (Gobert and Towns) and everything going into the offseason, I felt like we learned a lot to be able to build around.”

WILD-STARS
DALLAS (AP) — Tyler Seguin and Jason Robertson both had a power-play goal and an assist, Roope Hintz had three assists for the second game in a row and the Dallas Stars beat the Minnesota Wild 4-0 in Game 5. Jake Oettinger had 27 saves in his second career playoff shutout, and first by any goalie in this year’s playoffs. Seguin’s fourth power-play goal of the series came only 2:22 into the game, only eight seconds after Wild forward Marcus Foligno’s five-minute major penalty and game misconduct for a knee-on-knee hit on Radek Faksa. The Stars will try to wrap up the series Friday night with Game 6 in Minnesota. Minnesota was 0 for 3 with a man-advantage in Game 5, with all of its power plays in the second period. Oettinger stopped nine shots on the first two Wild power plays in quick succession.
