MINOT STATE SOFTBALL

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Minot State’s Reegan Floyd and Brooklyn Morrison led the way to an opening win, but despite a valiant comeback effort, the Beavers were forced to settle for a split in an NSIC doubleheader with visiting Northern State on Tuesday at the air-supported dome. Floyd dominated in the circle and Morrison drove in three runs as Minot State started the day strong with a 5-1 win. In the nightcap, the Beavers battled back from a seven-run deficit, closing to within a pair of runs of the visiting Wolves before the comeback fell short in a 10-5 setback. Minot State (20-14 overall, 7-5 NSIC) now hits the road for six straight, starting with a doubleheader Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State.

GAME 1 | Minot State 5, Northern State 1

The Minot State Beavers took a 3-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 5-1 victory over the Northern State Wolves on Tuesday. Sophomore Reegan Floyd (7-7) got the win for Minot State. The right-hander went six shutout innings, giving up two hits, one walk and striking out one. Junior Brooklyn Morrison led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-2 in the ballgame with two doubles and three RBI. Senior Courtney Chatburn provided a noteworthy performance at the dish as well, going 1-for-2 with two RBI. Junior Lexi Barduson also helped out, going 1-for-3 for Minot State with a triple.

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, highlighted by a two-RBI double from Morrison. The Beavers then held the Wolves scoreless before expanding their lead in the third inning. Morrison came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which brought the score to 4-0 in favor of the Beavers. Minot State kept Northern State without a run before building their lead to 5-0 in the fifth inning. The Beavers notched a run on Morrison’s RBI double. Northern State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but Minot State still coasted to the 5-1 win.

GAME 2 | Northern State 10, Minot State 5

An outstanding offensive output was not enough for Minot State on Tuesday. The Beavers put up five runs, but could not hold the Northern State Wolves at bay, and were bested 10-5. Freshman Kierra Fournier (3-6) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State. At the plate, the Beavers were paced by junior Izzy Penner, who went 2-for-4 on the day with a triple and two RBI. Freshman Taylor Smith put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Freshman Paige Kellogg also helped out for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.

Trailing 7-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fifth inning. Minot State put up two runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Penner. The Beavers kept the deficit at 7-2 before closing the gap further in the sixth. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from Smith, which brought the score to 7-5 in favor of the Wolves. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Northern State added three runs to its tally on the way to a 10-5 final.

UND HOCKEY-TRANSFERS

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – University of North Dakota head hockey coach Brad Berry announced on Tuesday that defenseman Garrett Pyke will join North Dakota for the 2023-24 season with one remaining year of eligibility. The Toronto, Ontario, native appeared in 81 games for Alaska during his three seasons, with the program not playing in 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In those contests, Pyke tallied eight goals and 33 assists for 41 points. Pyke helped the Nanooks reach new heights this past year, just missing the NCAA Tournament and finishing with a 22-10-2 overall record. He led all Nanook defensemen with 19 points and his 15 helpers were third overall on the squad. Four of those contests saw him record multiple points, including a four-game point streak to end the season. After appearing in only 13 games during his freshman season, Pyke has played in 68 straight games and has nearly replicated his offensive production with 20 and 19 points, respectively, in each of those two seasons. The blueliner has also blocked 74 shots over that span, the most by a UAF player, carries a plus-15 rating during that time and plus-16 for his career.

Berry also announced on Tuesday that forward Cameron Berg will transfer to UND for his final two years of eligibility beginning in the 2023-23 season. Berg spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Omaha, appearing in 74 of the possible 75 games for the Mavericks over that span. The West Fargo, N.D., native scored 18 goals and added 29 assists for 47 points in those two campaigns, with nine of those tallies coming against National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) foes. Last season, Berg helped the Mavs to their best conference finish in program history while sitting fourth on the team with 10 goals and sixth with 24 points. The forward struck four times on the power play, recorded seven multi-point games and won 54 percent of his faceoffs on 326 attempts. The North Dakotan was selected by the New York Islanders in the fourth round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft after earning All-USHL Third Team honors with Muskegon with 58 points in 51 games in 2020-21.

TWINS-WHITE SOX

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hanser Alberto’s throwing error allowed the automatic runner to score from second base and the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 4-3 in 10 innings on Tuesday night. With pinch-runner Willi Castro on second, Michael Taylor put down a sacrifice bunt. Alberto’s throw to first sailed and hit off the top of Taylor’s helmet, allowing Castro to score the game-ending run. Taylor, who also homered for the first time with the Twins in the third, had a sacrifice bunt a day earlier that went straight to the pitcher and led to the lead runner being thrown out. Minnesota reliever Griffin Jax (1-1) worked a perfect top of the 10th, standing Chicago’s automatic runner at third. Jesse Scholtens (0-1) was on the mound in the 10th for the White Sox, who got the game into extras after Luis Robert Jr. homered on the first pitch he saw from Twins closer Jhoan Duran in the ninth. Duran, who blew his first save in three chances this season, responded by striking out the next three batters. Minnesota’s Byron Buxton added a first-inning, two-run homer that erased an early 2-0 deficit. Pablo López worked 7 2/3 innings, giving up two runs and striking out 10.

UP NEXT
The series finishes today with Sonny Gray (1-0, 0.75 ERA) pitching for Minnesota and Chicago going with RHP Lucas Giolito (0-0, 9.00). Gray has allowed one run in 12 innings this season and struck out a career-high 13 in his last start. Giolito allowed a career-high 12 hits and seven runs in his last start at Pittsburgh.

TWINS-GALLO INJURY

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Joey Gallo has been placed on the 10-day injured list by the Minnesota Twins after his sore right side didn’t show enough improvement in pregame workouts. The slugging first baseman is dealing with a right intercostal strain that had already sidelined him for three games. The move to the IL is retroactive to April 8. The team announced a corresponding roster move will be made before Wednesday’s series finale against the Chicago White Sox. Gallo signed a one-year, $11 million contract with Minnesota in the offseason. He is batting .278 with three home runs and seven RBIs in seven games.

WILD-JETS

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Winnipeg Jets have found their groove just in time, after stumbling through much of the winter. With their spot in the playoffs clinched, now Connor Hellebuyck can get a break. Mark Scheifele scored his 42nd goal, Hellebuyck made 33 saves and the Jets secured the second wild card spot in the Western Conference with a 3-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday night. Adam Lowry and Mason Appleton for the Jets, who won for the fifth time in six games and eliminated Nashville from contention. Kirill Kaprizov scored on a power-play for his 40th goal early in the third period for the Wild, who lost their long-shot chance at home-ice advantage in the first round when Central Division leader Colorado went to overtime against Edmonton. Minnesota can’t catch the Avalanche or second-place Dallas. There were 51 penalty minutes doled out in the game, including 41 in the third period. The Wild finish the regular season at Nashville on Thursday night. Minnesota will face Colorado or Dallas in the first round.

NBA PLAY-IN

LOS ANGELES (AP) — LeBron James had 30 points and 10 rebounds, and the Los Angeles Lakers claimed the seventh spot in the Western Conference playoffs with a grueling 108-102 overtime victory over the short-handed Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA’s play-in tournament. Dennis Schröder scored 21 points and iced the win with two free throws with 8.4 seconds left for the Lakers, who will face second-seeded Memphis in the first round starting Sunday. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 24 points and Mike Conley hit three free throws with 0.1 seconds left in regulation to tie it for the Wolves, who will host New Orleans or Oklahoma City on Friday for the eighth spot.

MIAMI (AP) — Quin Snyder’s bags were packed in February for an overseas trip. He was going to spend time with some friends and family, see some coaches he’s gotten to know over the years. Then the Atlanta Hawks called with a job offer, to bring him on as coach. And now Snyder’s bags are packed again — for the playoffs, starting with a trip to Boston. Trae Young scored 25 points, Clint Capela grabbed 21 rebounds and the Hawks earned the No. 7 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs by beating the Miami Heat 116-105 in a play-in tournament game Tuesday night. Dejounte Murray added 18 points for the Hawks, who avenged a five-game Round 1 loss to Miami last season and earned an East first-round matchup with Boston that will start Saturday. Kyle Lowry scored 33 points — his highest-scoring game in his two Miami seasons — for the Heat, who will host either Toronto or Chicago on Friday to decide the No. 8 seed and a spot against top overall seed Milwaukee in Round 1. The Raptors and Bulls play Wednesday; the winner of Friday’s game opens the series against the Bucks on Sunday.
