MINOT STATE SOFTBALL
MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Beavers have been rolling, scoring upsets and climbing the NSIC standings. The Minot State softball team looks to continue that trend today as the Beavers (19-13 overall, 6-4 NSIC) close out what’s proven to be a 16-game homestand hosting the Northern State Wolves at 2 p.m. in the air-supported dome on the MSU campus. The Beavers head into the mid-week doubleheader having won three straight and four of their last five, which includes a 4-3 comeback win over two-time defending NSIC Champion Augustana, as well as a 3-1 win over one of the preseason favorites in St. Cloud State back on April 2. As for Northern State (9-21, 3-7), the Wolves come in with some momentum as well as they swept Southwest Minnesota State 4-2 and 2-1 on Saturday, snapping a run of 15 losses in the previous 16 games.

MINOT STATE WOMEN’S HOCKEY-HONOR
MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s hockey team continues to rack up accolades following a stellar season on the ice and in the classroom. Monday, the ACHA honored seven Beaver players for their exceptional efforts as all-around student-athletes, naming each as an Academic All-American. Receiving the honor were senior forwards Ensley Fendelet, Megan Norris, Sydney Spicer, and Alisha O’Hara, along with junior forward Riley Ball, and junior defensemen Aspen Cooper and Anna German. To earn the honor, a player must be at least a junior and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. The honor comes for the second straight year for Fendelet, who is majoring in Elementary Education, Norris, who is majoring in Exercise Science and Rehabilitation, Spicer, who is majoring in Exercise Science and Rehabilitation, and O’Hara, who is majoring in Communication Sciences & Disorders. This is the first year that Ball, who is majoring in Nursing, Cooper, who is majoring in Elementary Education, and German, who is majoring in Nursing, have been named Academic All-Americans.

TIMBERWOLVES
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have suspended center Rudy Gobert for their play-in game against the Los Angeles Lakers. The 10-year veteran threw a punch at teammate Kyle Anderson in an argument in the huddle during a timeout. Gobert took a swing at Anderson and hit him in the upper chest in the second quarter of Minnesota’s game Sunday against New Orleans. If the Timberwolves beat the Lakers they’ll get the No. 7 seed and face Memphis in the first round. If they lose, they’ll host the New Orleans-Oklahoma City winner for the No. 8 seed and a first-round date with Denver.
Minnesota also announced on Monday that forward Jaden McDaniels suffered a right hand injury during Sunday’s game vs. New Orleans Pelicans. X-rays and further imaging taken at Mayo Clinic Square by Dr. Kelechi Okoroha on McDaniels revealed fractures of his third and fourth metacarpals. He has been placed in a cast and will be out indefinitely. McDaniels is the Wolves best defender and was injured when he punched a wall in the tunnel. In 79 games (all starts) this season, McDaniels averaged career highs with 12.1 points on 59.1% shooting and 1.9 assists, along with 3.9 rebounds per game.

TWINS-WHITE SOX
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Hanser Alberto hit a three-run homer, Dylan Cease had another strong outing against the Twins and the Chicago White Sox held on to beat Minnesota 4-3 on Monday. Yasmani Grandal had two hits and drove in the other run for Chicago, which had to remove shortstop Tim Anderson in the sixth inning with left knee soreness after he collided with a baserunner. Cease, the American League Cy Young runner-up last season, gave up three runs but only one was earned after three errors by the White Sox. Cease (2-0) allowed three hits with six strikeouts in five innings. The Twins hit just 2 for 48 and were scoreless in 16 innings in two games against Cease last season. Kenta Maeda (0-2) surrendered four runs on eight hits in six innings for Minnesota, making his second start since Aug. 21, 2021, after recovering from Tommy John surgery.

MINNESOTA LYNX-WNBA DRAFT
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minnesota Lynx added plenty of size and talent in the WNBA Draft Monday night. With the second overall pick, the Lynx took Diamond Miller, a 6’3″ guard from Maryland. Miller was a Second Team All-American in 2023 and averaged 19.7 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game in her senior season. At the end of the first round, the Lynx added 19-year-old French power forward Maia Hirsch. The 6’5″ Hirsch is averaging 4.2 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game in France’s LFB League this season.
In the second round, the Lynx drafted another 6’5″ forward, Dorka Juhász of the UConn Huskies, and 6’1″ guard Brea Beal from South Carolina. Juhász averaged 14.2 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.5 steals per game this year, making her a finalist for the Lisa Leslie award for the best center in the nation. Beal was a four-year starter for the Gamecocks, and was named a finalist for Naismith Defensive Player of the Year in her senior season. The Lynx’s final pick was Taylor Soule out of Virginia Tech. The Hokies made the Final Four this season thanks in part to Soule’s 10.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game.
