MINOT STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – It was only fitting on “Senior Night” that Minot State’s seniors take over. Getting all their goals from seniors, Sheldon Davis broke a scoreless tie early in the second period with his first of two goals, fellow senior Drew Carter added two more goals in the session, and Landyn Cochrane added an insurance goal in the third period as No. 1-ranked Minot State skated past No. 7-ranked Jamestown, 5-3 on Thursday night at the Maysa Arena. The contest was the final regular-season game for both teams as each now head to Marlborough, Massachusetts next week for the ACHA National Tournament. It also was the final home game for Minot State seniors Davis, Carter, Cochrane, and teammates Austin Wieler, Connor Navrot, Wayde Johanneson, Jake Bestul, Eric Soar, and Dalton Dosko.

Tied 0-0 for the second straight night headed into the second period – as the two teams played a similar contest Wednesday hosted by Jamestown with Minot State scoring the 2-1 victory – Davis broke the tie with his first of the night and the 86th of his Beaver career with 4 minutes, 45 seconds gone in the stanza. After the Jimmies tied it midway through the period it was all Beavers, led by their seniors, as Davis scored with 3:08 left in the second, Carter scored his first of the night just 44 seconds later, then Carter made it 4-1 with his second just 17 seconds after that. Cochrane added one more goal for Minot State (31-3-0 overall) with 4:50 gone in the third period for a bit of icing on the “Senior Night” celebration. Carter Barley added two assists in the win, and Troy Hamilton, Peyton Jerome, and Cochrane also had an assist for Minot State, which next is in action in the first round at nationals on next Friday, March 17, at 8 p.m. (ET). Jake Anthony finished with 32 saves in goal for the Beavers.

MINOT STATE WOMEN’S HOCKEY-HONOR

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – She may have only had one season on the ice for the Beavers, but Jordan Kulbida made a huge impact. The senior transfer from the University of Regina led Minot State in scoring with 18 goals and 13 assists for 31 points in 31 games this winter, was named to the All-Women’s Midwest Collegiate Hockey (WMCH) First Team, and on Thursday the ACHA named Kulbida a Second Team All-American for her performance. While obviously the first honor for Kulbida, it continues a run of six straight seasons for the Minot State women’s hockey team having an ACHA All-American on their roster with the most recent honoree being Kulbida’s current teammate, Ensely Fendelet (1st team in 2021-22). Kulbida and the Beavers (21-10-2 overall) return to the ice next week for the ACHA National Tournament, playing Miami (Ohio) on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m. (ET) in a first-round contest in Boston, Massachusetts.

WILD-KAPRIZOV INJURY

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — All-Star left wing Kirill Kaprizov is expected to miss the next three to four weeks with a lower-body injury, the Minnesota Wild announced on Thursday. Kaprizov was hurt in the game on Wednesday at Winnipeg, when 6-foot-7 Jets defenseman Logan Stanley collided with him as he protected the puck and Stanley delivered a check. Stanley’s momentum carried all of his weight on top of the back of Kaprizov, who then fell to the ice as his left knee bent awkwardly and his legs spread apart in a scissors-kick motion. In his third year with the Wild, Kaprizov has played in 214 of a possible 216 games including the playoffs, but this injury will likely cost him most of the remainder of the regular season. The Wild have 17 games left. Their win at Winnipeg moved them into a first-place tie with Dallas for the Central Division lead, with the Stars having played one fewer game. Kaprizov leads the Wild with 39 goals, which was tied for sixth in the league as of Thursday. The Wild are just 26th in the NHL with an average of 2.75 goals per game, and with a team-leading 74 points Kaprizov has had a hand in more than 41% of their goals. The Wild, who are 9-0-2 in their last 11 games, recalled forward Sammy Walker from their AHL affiliate in Iowa. They play next at San Jose on Saturday night.

VIKINGS-CINE RETURN

EAGAN, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Vikings safety Lewis Cine could participate in spring practices, less than eight months after a badly
broken lower left leg cut short his rookie season. Coach Kevin O’Connell said Thursday that Cine has made remarkable progress through the rehabilitation process for the compound fracture he suffered in London on Oct. 2. Cine was hurt while blocking for a punt return in Minnesota’s game against New Orleans. The first-round draft pick out of Georgia needed surgery and remained in London the week after the game, until he was cleared to fly home. Cine could be ready for on-field work with the Vikings when they begin organized team activities in late May, O’Connell said. “I’m just so proud of where he’s at, his desire to be in this building every day, doing the things that we’re asking him to do, and then going beyond that,” O’Connell said. “He’s been fantastic.”
