MINOT STATE WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

 

BRANSON, Mo. (MSU) – The Minot State Beavers got a boost out of Paige Kellogg, who collected two extra base hits in a 11-3 loss to the Maryville Saints on Sunday in the Beavers first game of the day at the Drury Branson Bash. Kierra Fournier (1-3) got the ball to start for Minot State (9-9 overall) and took the loss. In the second game of the day, the Beavers jumped in front in the top of the first inning against Southwest Baptist but fell 8-4.

 

Kellogg’s two extra base hits were the highlight of a 2-for-2 day, and included a double, a triple, a walk and an RBI. Taylor Smith put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-for-2 with an RBI. Taryn Bennett also contributed for the Beavers, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding an RBI. The Beavers were trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State put three runs on the board in the inning, highlighted by a run-scoring triple from Kellogg. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Maryville added six runs to their tally on the way to an 11-3 final.

 

Freshman Paige Kellogg went 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the Minot State Beavers in an 8-4 loss to the Southwest Baptist Bearcats on Sunday. Sophomore Reegan Floyd (4-5) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. In the batter’s box, the Beavers were led by Kellogg, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a triple and an RBI. Senior Jaycie Rostad put together a standout effort as well, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Junior Brooklyn Morrison also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI. The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Minot State put up two runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Kellogg. The Bearcats then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-2 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the second. Minot State managed to push across two runs in the inning, which brought the Beavers lead to 4-3. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Southwest Baptist scored five times over the remaining five innings to grab the 8-4 win.

 

Minot State is back in action in three weeks hosting the University of Regina on March 18 and 19 in doubleheaders in the Air-Supported Dome on the MSU campus with first-pitch scheduled for Noon each day.

MINOT STATE TRACK

 

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – Minot State’s Chase Snyder brought home the gold. Turning in one of his best throws of the season at the perfect time, the sophomore from Lake Andes, South Dakota won the NSIC title in the men’s shot put at the NSIC Indoor Track and Field Championships hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato, which concluded Sunday. Snyder had the second-best throw of his career of 52 feet, 5.25 inches, good enough for victory on Sunday making him the first NSIC Champion for Minot State since Taylor Laumeyer won the women’s outdoor javelin title back in the spring of 2019. He also set the NCAA Division II-era school record in the event earlier this season with a throw of 53-1 for Minot State.

 

While Snyder led the way, one of his biggest rivals on the day was teammate Leif Nelson who brought home All-NSIC honors as he finished third in the men’s shot put with a throw of 51 feet. 9.25 inches. They set the tone on the day for the Beavers as the Minot State men finished 10th with 29 points while the Minot State women were 14th with 1 team point. Host Minnesota State, Mankato swept the team titles with the Maverick men scoring 232 points and the Maverick women scoring 216.5 points.

 

Adding to the Beaver men’s point total on the day was Jacob Jensen who just missed All-NSIC honors as he finished fourth in the mile in 4 minutes, 13.07 seconds, his second-fastest career time in the event, as well. Jensen also added team points on a busy day for him, finishing ninth in the 3,000 meters in 8:38.33.

Devontae Daley, who qualified for the men’s 600-meter finals with a strong performance on Saturday, added team points as he finished sixth in the event finals on Sunday in 1:23.43, a career-best for the freshman and the second-fastest NCAA D-II-era 600 at Minot State. Daley also helped out in the 4×400-meter relay for the Beavers, who finished sixth in that event in 3:25.99. Daley teamed with Juan Gutierrez, Peyton Tuhy, and Nathan Trujillo-Aragon to add to Minot State’s team score.

 

On the women’s side, Jessica Martinez led the way for the Beavers as she was 18th in the 3,000 meters in 10:38.07 on Saturday. The NSIC Indoor Championships wrapped up the indoor season for the Minot State track and field teams who now get a month off to rest and recover before the outdoor opener on March 28, the Yellow Jacket Spring Open hosted by Black Hills State.

NDSU TRACK-RODIN

 

VERMILLION, S.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State men’s track & field team finished third in the team standings at the Summit League Indoor Championships, which concluded Sunday afternoon inside the DakotaDome. The Bison men claimed two more event titles on the final day of the meet. Senior Jacob Rodin captured the second Summit League indoor 800m title of his career in 1:50.30. NDSU’s Josh Knutson, Jacob Levin, and Cullen Curl joined Rodin to win the 4x400m relay title in 3:16.16.

WOLVES-WARRIORS

 

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Klay Thompson scored 32 points, including a key 3-pointer with 2:05 to play, and the Golden State Warriors held off the Minnesota Timberwolves 109-104 in a matchup of undermanned teams. Donte DiVincenzo put Golden State ahead for good on a 3 with 3:02 left and finished with 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Naz Reid scored a career-high 30 points and added nine rebounds for Minnesota, but the Timberwolves have lost three straight and four of five. Kevon Looney grabbed 17 rebounds for the Warriors and has 13 or more in six consecutive games. He finished with 12 points. Golden State was missing Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins again.

WILD-BLUE JACKETS

 

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov scored with 20 seconds left in overtime, completing a natural hat trick and lifting the Minnesota Wild past the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2. Minnesota’s 25-year-old All-Star set a team record with 47 goals last season. He’s now ahead of that pace this year after his third career hat trick gave him 37 goals with another six weeks yet to play in the regular season. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 22 of 24 shots for the Wild, who trailed 2-0 heading into the third period. Mathieu Olivier and Liam Foudy scored for Columbus while Elvis Merzlikins made 42 saves. Merzlikins blanked the Wild through the first 40 minutes before Kaprizov scored twice in the first six minutes of the third to tie the game. Then, on the final shift of overtime, Wild defenseman Calen Addison feathered a pass across the crease and Kaprizov slammed it into the open net for the game winner. The Wild host the Islanders on Tuesday night.
