MINOT STATE WOMEN’S HOCKEY

CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (MSU) – The on-ice rivalry between Minot State and Midland continues to be closely contested, but on this night, the win went to the Warriors. Third-ranked Minot State made a strong third-period charge in the teams’ WMCH semifinal match-up, but couldn’t break through in the final 10 minutes, falling to second-ranked Midland, 3-2 on Friday night. The win sends Midland into the WMCH Tournament title game against Liberty on Saturday, while the Beavers (21-10-2 overall) now will prepare for the next tournament on their schedule – and a much bigger goal, the ACHA National Tournament in Boston, Massachusetts, March 16-20. The 10-team national tournament begins Thursday, March 16, with the Beavers most likely playing one of four opening-round games that day.

Friday in their battle with Midland, the Beavers found themselves down, but not out, trailing 3-0 heading into the third period. A power-play goal by Ensley Fendelet ignited the comeback, then just a few minutes later, Jordan Kulbida scored to close the gap to 3-2 with more than 10 minutes left. But the Warriors hung on over the final half of the period, fending off Minot State to advance to the title game against No. 1-ranked Liberty. The Flames beat tournament host Maryville 6-1 in the day’s other semifinal. Haylie Biever finished with 20 saves in goal for the Beavers on Friday night.

MINOT STATE MEN’S HOCKEY

LYNCHBURG, Va. (MSU) – The weekend in Virginia got off to a rough start for the top-ranked Minot State men’s hockey team. Host Liberty scored goals 51 seconds apart midway through the first period and rode that momentum the rest of the night to a 5-1 upset of the visiting Beavers late Friday night. The two teams meet again today in Virginia with puck-drop scheduled for 6 p.m. (CT). The loss snaps an 11-game win for No. 1 Minot State (28-3-0 overall) in its head-to-head series against No. 6 Liberty, a streak that includes 4-2 and 2-1 victories by the Beavers at home in October of this season. Off to a fast start, Liberty added three more goals in the second period and held the Beavers scoreless most of the evening. Christian Kadolph broke up the shutout with 2:06 remaining, though, scoring a power-play goal for Minot State off assists from Reece Henry and Reid Arnold. Jake Anthony finished with 23 saves in goal for the Beavers, who outshot the Flames 37-28 on the night.

MINOT STATE WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

BRANSON, Mo (MSU) – Senior Leo Watson racked up three extra-base hits and junior Gabi Dawyduk added two more to help power the Minot State Beavers over the Lincoln Blue Tigers 13-5 in 6 innings on Friday in the opener of the Drury University Branson Bash. Minot State fell 6-0 to host Drury in the Beavers second game of the day.

Freshman Calley Olson (4-1) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State (9-6). The right-hander went four innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on five hits, allowing three walks and striking out three. Freshman Kierra Fournier also made an impact in the circle for the Beavers, starting the ballgame and throwing two innings, giving up one run on one hit. Watson’s three extra-base hits were the highlight of a 3-for-4 day, and included three doubles, a walk and five RBI. Dawyduk made her contribution with a double, a triple and an RBI, part of a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Senior Jaycie Rostad also chipped in for the Beavers, putting together one hit in two trips to the plate while adding a double and two RBI.

The Minot State Beavers were not able to notch a run against Drury senior pitcher Kristina Bettis on Friday and were shut out 6-0 by the Panthers. Sophomore Reegan Floyd (4-3) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. The right-hander went four innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on three hits, allowing two walks and striking out two. In the batter’s box, the Beavers were paced by junior Taryn Bennett, who went 1-for-2 on the day with a walk.

UND MEN’S HOCKEY

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND) – Freshman Jackson Blake showed why he is one of the top players in the country on Friday night, potting a pair of goals, including the game winner, to give North Dakota a 2-1 overtime win over Colorado College from Ed Robson Arena. Blake struck just 29 seconds into overtime after he danced free of his defender and sniped it over the goaltender’s shoulder to give the Fighting Hawks (14-13-5, 8-10-3 NCHC) a crucial two points in the NCHC standings and their 14th straight win over CC (10-19-2, 6-13-2 NCHC). The freshman, who was recently named a nominee for the Hobey Baker Award, collected his 12th game this season with multiple points, extended his point streak to seven straight games and helped UND stretch its unbeaten streak to three. Drew DeRidder stretched his unbeaten streak to three straight as well, turning aside 17-of-18 shots to earn his ninth win of the season.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — LaMelo Ball had 32 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and the dagger 3-pointer down the stretch to lead the Charlotte Hornets past the Minnesota Timberwolves, 121-113 on Friday night. Gordon Hayward added a season-high 27 points and 13 rebounds and P.J. Washington had in 20 points for the Hornets. They won their third straight overall and stopped a seven-game road skid. Bell bested Minnesota All-Star Anthony Edwards in a battle of two of the top three picks in the 2020 draft. Edwards had 29 points and eight rebounds, bringing the Wolves to life in the fourth quarter and on the verge of avoiding a second damaging loss to the lottery-bound Hornets.
