MINOT STATE WOMEN’S HOCKEY
 
CHESTERFIELD, Mo. (MSU) – The Minot State women continued their season-long dominance of in-state rival Jamestown, and at the perfect time. Krissy Rink and Sydney Spicer each scored in the third period to help the 3rd-ranked Minot State women’s hockey team ice a 5-2 win over 12th-ranked Jamestown and advance to the semifinals of the WMCH Tournament hosted by Maryville. A goal by Aspen Cooper put Minot State (21-9-2 overall) on top 1-0 after the first period, then Gillian Gervin and Riley Ball each scored in the second period to give the Beavers a 3-2 edge heading into the final stanza. Rink scored early in the third, then Spicer’s power-play goal helped ice the win late for Minot State, which also got 27 saves in goal from Jordan Ivanco in the victory.
 
Minot State now plays 2nd-seeded Midland in the semifinals today at 7:45 p.m. The Warriors beat 7th-seeded Lindenwood 4-0 on Thursday. Top-seeded Liberty, which got a first-round bye, plays 5th-seeded Maryville at 4:45 p.m. in today’s first semifinal. The host school picked up a 4-3 overtime win over 4th-seeded McKendree on Thursday.

NDSU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
 
ST. PAUL, Minn. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team outscored St. Thomas, 24-9, in the third quarter to pick up a key road win over the Tommies, 64-44, at Schoenecker Arena on Thursday night. Elle Evans paced NDSU (17-10, 11-6 Summit) reaching double figures in scoring for the 11th straight game with a game-best 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field. Taylor Brown filled her stat line with 11 points, game-high eight rebounds, four assists and three steals. Emily Behnke also hit double digits with 10 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists. As a team, NDSU shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field, including a 62.5 percent (10-16) mark in the fourth quarter. The Bison also scored 42 points in the paint and 16 second chance points. After trailing at the half, 18-17, the Bison assembled a 7-3 run to open up a 30-23 lead following a layup from Kristina Ekofo Yomane at the 4:50 mark. NDSU closed the frame with six unanswered points to build a 41-27 advantage after three quarters. The Bison didn’t look back from there building their largest lead of the night, 53-31, following a triple from Heaven Hamling with 5:24 remaining. NDSU went on to close out the remaining time to earn the 64-44 win. NDSU will wrap up regular season play at Western Illinois on Saturday. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State men’s basketball team outscored St. Thomas by 12 in the second half to pull away for a 73-64 victory inside the Scheels Center on Thursday night. The Bison improved to 10-7 in The Summit League, taking over sole possession of third place in the league standings. St. Thomas fell to 18-12 overall and 9-8 in the league. NDSU junior Grant Nelson registered his seventh straight double-double, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Boden Skunberg also recorded a double-double – his second of the season – with 16 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Damari Wheeler-Thomas added 13 points for the Bison. St. Thomas set a Scheels Center / Bison Sports Arena record with 46 three-point attempts in the game. The Tommies made 12-of-46 for 26 percent from beyond the arc. NDSU outshot St. Thomas overall, 48 percent to 36 percent. There were 14 lead changes and five ties in the contest. NDSU never led by more than four points until a three-point play by Skunberg put the Bison up 51-44 with 8:39 remaining. NDSU led 55-49 before stringing together a 7-0 run in the span of 1:40 to take control of the game. The Bison outscored the Tommies 45-33 in the second half. The Bison will host Western Illinois in the regular season finale on Saturday at 1 p.m.

UND WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
 
MACOMB, ILL (UND) – The University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks (18-9, 11-6 SL) took home its third straight road win against the Western Illinois (10-18, 5-12 SL) Fighting Leathernecks. North Dakota can finish no worse than 3rd in the Summit League standing heading into the final game of the regular season. Kacie Borowicz led with 31 points and five assists. She also drew 11 fouls. Claire Orth Led with nine rebounds and had 15 pts. Nakiyah Hurst and Juliet Gordon both had 11 pts. Rakiyah Beal led with a career high of four steals. The Fighting Hawks had a strong in the opening minutes going 8 for 17 from the field and drawing five fouls in the first quarter. NoDak found a steady rhythm in the second, added 21 points while holding Western Illinois to 13. Allie McCarthy swished a huge three to extend the lead to 12 in the final three minutes of the half. UND took an 11-point lead into the break. the third quarter, which was a sore spot in January, seemed to work itself out headed into the final seven games of the season. UND created as much as a 20-point gap. The final quarter, the Leathernecks tried to make a final push, but good defense held them off. Next Game: at St. Thomas on Saturday at 1:00 PM.

UND MEN’S BASKETBALL
 
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – The North Dakota men’s basketball team returned home for the final weekend of the regular season Thursday morning, with an early start against Western Illinois. It was a tough day shooting for the Hawks, who fell 81-70. Tsotne Tsartsidze had his fourth double-double of the season with 19 points (which tied his career high) and 13 rebounds. It was the 11th straight game in double figures for the Hawks forward. B.J. Omot also joined Tsartsidze in double figures with 16 points and blocked two shots. Treysen Eaglestaff was the third Hawk in double figures with 14 points and made three shots from downtown. He also led the team with three assists. UND took the lead at 2-0 with a dunk from Omot, which would prove to be the only lead for the Hawks on the day. WIU pulled ahead and would lead the entire first half until UND tied the game at 27 late in the first half. Down 27-20 with 5:53 to go the Hawks reeled off seven straight points, capped off by a three from Norman to make it a tie game for the first time since 2-2. But UND was unable to ride the momentum back ahead and would trail 38-32 at the break. In the second half, the Hawks cut the deficit to just four points early on as Brady Danielson and Matt Norman made back-to-back buckets. But each time that the Hawks would gain some momentum in the second half, the Leathernecks would answer. After trailing by double digits most of the second half, the Hawks got back to within eight as Omot connected on two foul shots with 4:01 to play at 72-64. But once again Western Illinois would answer and not allow UND to pull any closer the rest of the way. North Dakota will host St. Thomas on Saturday at 1 P.M. in the regular season finale at the Betty.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 30 shots for his 73rd career shutout and the Minnesota Wild beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-0 for their fourth straight win. Fleury is 12th on the NHL’s career shutouts list three behind Ed Belfour and Tony Esposito, who are tied for 10th. Brandon Duhaime and Kirill Kaprizov scored for Minnesota, which passed Colorado for third place in the Central Division. Joonas Korpisalo stopped 23 shots for Columbus. TWINS-SOLANO SIGNED
FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) — Infielder Donovan Solano finalized a $2 million, one-year contract with the Minnesota Twins, who added another productive and versatile player to an already deep bench. He can earn an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses for plate appearances. Solano hit .284 with 16 doubles and four home runs last season in 80 games for Cincinnati. He played mostly first base. Solano spent three years with San Francisco before that. He won a Silver Slugger award for National League second basemen in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season when he batted .326 . The 35-year-old is a .278 hitter over 686 major league games.
