MINOT STATE HOCKEY-POLLS

 

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – Riding a three-game win streak that started with a road upset of top-ranked Liberty, the Minot State women’s hockey team jumped to No. 2 in this week’s ACHA Division I Women’s Ice Hockey Poll. Meanwhile, a road split for the top-ranked Minot State men’s team didn’t hurt the Beavers as they remained No. 1 in this week’s ACHA Division I men’s poll.

 

The No. 2 ranking is the highest for the Minot State women this season as the Beavers have consistently been ranked in the Top 5 in the nation. The Beavers (17-8-1 overall) trail just No. 1-ranked Liberty (Va.), who Minot State beat 4-3 on January 28. The Beavers also have wins over the other teams in the top five, having beaten No. 3 Midland 4-3 in overtime on December 3, besting No. 4 Indiana Tech 5-0 on January 14, and topping No. 5 Adrian 2-1 on January 6. The Minot State women host Lindenwood (Mo.) this weekend on Friday and Saturday at 3:45 p.m. at Maysa Arena for Senior Weekend, the final two home games of the season for the Beavers.

 

As for the Minot State men (26-2-0), who fell 5-3 at then fourth-ranked Ohio on Friday, the Beavers bounced back for an 8-5 victory over the Bobcats on Saturday which helped them remain No. 1 in the current rankings. The Beavers have been No. 1 for eight consecutive polls. Ohio, aided by the split with Minot State, climbed to No. 3 in the current poll, with Adrian (Mich.) checking in at No. 2. UNLV was No. 4 and Liberty, which hosts Minot State on Feb. 24-25, was No. 5. The Minot State men are off this weekend and next hit the ice playing at Mary on Saturday, Feb. 18, then at home at the Maysa Arena hosting 8th-ranked Jamestown on Sunday, Feb. 19, at 5 p.m.

DALLAS (AP) — Captain Jamie Benn broke a scoreless tie 23 seconds into the second period of his 1,001st career game, and the Dallas Stars beat the Minnesota Wild 4-1. Benn’s 20th goal on a perfect feed from 19-year-old rookie Wyatt Johnston started a three-goal second for the Western Conference-leading Stars. Radek Faksa’s one-timer on a precision 2-on-1 pass from Tyler Seguin came five minutes later, and Jani Hakanpaa tipped in a shot from Roope Hintz. Joel Eriksson Ek scored on a power play to get Minnesota within 3-1 late in the second period. The Wild had Ryan Hartman’s goal just 30 seconds later called off for goalie interference against Jordan Greenway.

WOLVES-JAZZ

 

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 31 points and Jaylen Nowell added a career-high 30 to lead Minnesota to a 143-118 win over Utah on Wednesday night amid word the Timberwolves, Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers were part of an eight-player swap hours ahead of the NBA trade deadline. Luka Garza scored a career-high 25 points and the Timberwolves made 23 3-pointers at a 54 % shooting clip, tying their highest output of the season. Lauri Markkanen scored 21 points and Collin Sexton had 20 in Utah’s worst home loss of the season. Playing loose, the Timberwolves set a season high with 79 points in the first half and led 107-80 midway through the third quarter, helped by 64% shooting from the field and 61% from 3-point range.

 

In the deal, the Timberwolves sent D’Angelo Russell to the Lakers, where he played his first two NBA seasons from 2015-17. Utah shipped Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Mike Conley to Minnesota and dealt Jarred Vanderbilt and Malik Beasley to the Lakers. The Jazz received Russell Westbrook, Juan Toscano-Anderson and Damian Jones from the Lakers, as well as a first-round draft pick in 2027. UP NEXT Timberwolves: At Memphis on Friday.

NBA-DURANT TRADED

 

NEW YORK (AP) — Kevin Durant’s time in Brooklyn has ended. The Nets agreed to trade him to the Phoenix Suns, a person with knowledge of the details says. The Suns will send Cam Johnson, Mikal Bridges, Jae Crowder, four first-round picks and additional draft compensation to the Nets for the 13-time All-Star. The Suns also receive forward T.J. Warren in the deal, the person told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the trade is not yet official. Durant was moved just days after the Nets traded Kyrie Irving from Dallas, a stunningly fast end to the superstar era in Brooklyn. The 34-year-old Durant is still playing at an elite level, averaging nearly 30 points per game this season. He asked for a trade last summer and the Suns were interested, and finally got him before today’s 3 p.m. EST trade deadline. He is recovering from a sprained knee ligament, and when he returns it will be to a Phoenix lineup that suddenly could be one of the best in the Western Conference.
