MINOT, ND – The Minot High boys and girls basketball teams each suffered their first loss of the season in the last week so Bismarck Century has jumped to the top of both Class A Basketball Polls. The polls are voted on by the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

MINOT STATE-FRANTSVOG HONORED

 

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The NCAA Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has selected Dean Frantsvog from Minot State as the recipient of the 2022 Dr. Dave Pariser Faculty Mentor Award. Frantsvog, who died in August after a battle with cancer, will be honored posthumously at the NCAA Convention this month in San Antonio. He was a business law professor at Minot State for 18 years. He graduated from Minot State in 1997 with a degree in criminal justice and earned his juris doctorate in 2000 from Hamline. He was Minot State’s faculty athletics representative and a steadfast advocate for Minot State athletics and student-athletes. Frantsvog was inducted into the Minot State Athletics Hall of Fame in October.

 

The Dr. Dave Pariser Faculty Mentor Award is named after a Bellarmine physical therapy professor who died in 2013. It recognizes faculty members at Division II schools for their dedication to supporting and mentoring student-athletes, as well as their commitment to Division II student-athletes’ lifelong learning, competition and well-being.

 

As Minot State’s faculty athletics representative, Frantsvog also helped review and advise the athletics department on compliance and policy issues during the university’s transition from the NAIA to NCAA Division II. He became the department’s first FAR in 2010 and served until 2022. Minot State honored Frantsvog as a Professor of the Year in 2018. He also won a Faculty Achievement Award in 2012, the Young Alumni Achievement Award in 2011 and the Vision 2013 Merit Award.

WORLD JUNIOR HOCKEY

 

HALIFAX, Nova Scotia (AP) — Adam Fantilli scored the go-ahead goal in the second period, Thomas Milic made 43 saves and Canada overcame an early deficit to beat the United States 6-2 on Wednesday night to advance to the world junior hockey championship game. Seeking its 20th title, Canada will face the Czech Republic on Thursday night. The Czechs, 5-2 winners over Canada in their tournament opener, rallied to beat Sweden 2-1 in overtime in the first semifinal. Joshua Roy had two goals, the second into the empty net, and two assists for Canada. Fantilli, Connor Bedard and Logan Stankoven each had a goal and an assist, and Brandt Clarke also scored. Logan Cooley and Kenny Connors scored in the first period as the Americans raced to a 2-0 lead. The Americans will face Sweden in the third-place game.

WOLVES-BLAZERS

 

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 13 of his 32 points in the fourth quarter, Rudy Gobert had 17 points and 12 rebounds, and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Portland Trail Blazers 113-106. Luka Garza added 14 points off the bench for Minnesota. Jerami Grant scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half, but Portland trailed by as much as 13 in the opening half while Damian Lillard and Anfernee Simons combined for three points. Lillard finished with 27 points and Simons had 16. The Trail Blazers had 18 turnovers that led to 22 points for Minnesota. Minnesota’s Taurean Prince returned after missing 20 games with a right shoulder subluxation. His impact was limited due to foul trouble, but he finished with 11 points in 21 minutes. The seven-year veteran also provided energy and defense off the bench. Timberwolves host the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday.

WILD-LIGHTNING

 

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Kirill Kaprizov scored twice and the Minnesota Wild beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-1 for their ninth win in 11 games. Joel Eriksson Ek, Calen Addison and Sam Steel also scored for Minnesota. Filip Gustavsson made 34 saves and improved to 8-1 in his last nine starts. The Wild have beaten Tampa Bay 10 times in a row at home since Nov. 28, 2011. Brayden Point scored for the Lightning, who lost for the first time in five games and just the fourth time in 15 games. Brian Elliott made 28 saves. Wild: Play at Buffalo on Saturday.
