MSU MENS WRESTLING

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – It was a bittersweet day at the All Seasons Arena for the Minot State men’s wrestling team. The Beavers hosted the school’s first-ever NCAA Championship athletic event Saturday, putting on a show on the mats for 10 rivals at the Super Region V Tournament at the North Dakota State Fairgrounds. The bittersweet part came in the final two matches of the day as the Beavers’ Cannon Potts and Jake Swirple settled for fourth-place finishes, each, one place shy of a trip to the NCAA National Tournament in Wichita, Kansas in two weeks. Potts battled his way into the championship semifinals at 197 pounds before losing a 4-2 decision to Caden Steffen of Southwest Minnesota State, sending Potts into the consolation semifinals. Bouncing back strong the Minot State junior earned an 8-5 decision win over Treyton Cacek of Northern State, sending him into the third-place match. Competing for third place and a trip to nationals, Potts fell by pin to Augustana’s Max Ramberg. As for Swirple, he battled his way through the consolation bracket at 285 pounds after an overtime loss in the championship quarterfinals. First, he won an 8-4 decision over St. Cloud State’s Elijah Novak, then in the consolation semifinals he won a 4-2 decision over Minnesota State, Mankato’s Tanner Gaffey, earning a spot in the third-place match and a chance to compete for a national tournament berth. Battling hard with Augustana’s Zach Peterson, the match went into overtime tied 1-1 where a takedown for Peterson gave him the sudden victory and forced Swirple to settle for fourth place. They were two of the Beavers’ three placers on the day as Wayne Joint also battled deep into the 133-pound bracket, advancing to the championship semifinals before a loss by pin to Mary’s Reece Barnhardt sent the Beaver junior into the consolation bracket. After losing to Wisconsin-Parkside’s Matthew Chi 4-1 in overtime in the consolation semifinals, Joint finished off his run with a 5-4 decision win in the fifth-place match over Jack Huffman of Augustana. While that trio led the way, the Beavers also got wins on the mat from Ethan Wonser at 141 pounds, Brendan Barnes at 165 pounds, and Cayden White at 184 pounds. Wonser won a 10-2 major decision over Southwest Minnesota State’s Hunter Pfantz in a consolation match. Barnes picked up a pair of wins as he scored an 11-0 major decision victory over Southwest Minnesota State’s Ashton Labelle in the championship first round and earned a 4-0 decision win over Lincoln Fink of Sioux Falls in the consolation bracket. And White picked up a 10-4 win by decision in the championship first round over Upper Iowa’s Colter Bye, as well, wrapping up the day for Minot State. As a team, the Beavers finished ninth with 31 points. St. Cloud State won the Super Region V team title with 142 points.

UND HOCKEY

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Senior goaltender Ludvig Persson stopped all 35 shots fired his way to help No. 3 North Dakota defeat No. 12/11 Western Michigan, 3-0, and capture the Penrose Cup for the sixth time in program history on Saturday night from the Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. UND (24-8-2, 15-6-1 NCHC) wins its 21st conference crown in program history and league-leading sixth Penrose Cup in 11 years. The Fighting Hawks have won four of the last five league titles and will host Miami in the best-of-three NCHC Quarterfinals beginning on March 15. Persson shined between the pipes once again to register his NCHC-leading fifth shutout of the season with 35 saves. The Swede was dialed in the final 40 minutes, stopping all 27 shots fired his way to earn his 21st win of the season. Similarly to last night, North Dakota jumped out to an early lead on a breakaway goal as Louis Jamernik V got sprung on a great feed from Dylan James to give the senior his second tally of the weekend and a 1-0 UND lead just over four minutes into the game. UND held strong through the opening 40 minutes, carrying the 1-0 lead into the final period before Jackson Blake put his mark on the contest with a highlight-reel goal to extend the advantage to 2-0 with just over 13 minutes to play. Owen McLaughlin put the finishing touches on the victory with his 12th of the season, dancing around the Western Michigan (18-13-1, 9-13-0 NCHC) goaltender and tucking it home on the breakaway to seal the 3-0 win. North Dakota will close the regular season at Omaha for a weekend series beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. from Baxter Arena.

UND MENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – With a 50-25 margin in the second half, the North Dakota men’s basketball team defeated South Dakota 95-66 in the final regular season game. Tsotne Tsartsidze was honored pregame and scored 14 points with seven rebounds and two steals. Tyree Ihenacho led the team with a career high 24 points and tied his career high with eight assists, while Amar Kuljuhovic led the green and white with eight rebounds. B.J. Omot led with three steals and two blocked shots. NoDak got off to a fast start with a 7-3 lead, but the Yotes fought back and took the lead shortly after. UND trailed for about seven minutes in the middle of the half but went back on top with a Treysen Eaglestaff three to make it 24-22. After USD tied it at 24, UND reeled off seven straight points to go back on top; but USD answered with ten straight to retake the lead. Eaglestaff answered with a three to knot it up at 34—it was the start of a 13-2 run that propelled the green hosts to a 45-41 halftime lead. Coming out of the locker room USD got the first three point of the half, but a 12-2 run propelled the Fighting Hawks to a 57-46 lead, and from there NoDak would pull away as the second half went on; never allowing the Yotes to get within single digits again. The Fighting Hawks will await their seeding and opponent in the quarterfinals of the Summit League Tournament. Pending the result of Kansas City’s game tomorrow the Fighting Hawks will be either the two seed with a Roos loss or three seed with a Roos win.

UND WOMENS BASKETBALL

VERMILLION, S.D. (UND) – Kacie Borowicz became the fourth player in North Dakota women’s basketball history to reach 2,000 career points, but the Fighting Hawks fell in their regular season finale 65-54 to South Dakota Saturday. The Coyotes opened the second half with a 10-0 run, forcing a UND timeout at the six-minute mark. A Borowicz midrange bucket would end the 12-point USD run, but the Coyotes answered with a basket of their own on the next possession. With just under five minutes, UND used a 9-1 run to cut the lead back to single-digits, 47-38 with 54 seconds left in the third. However, USD scored the final four points of the quarter, all off free throws, to carry a 51-38 lead into the final period. Borowicz ended the day with a game-high 25 points, six rebounds and was a perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Pemberton notched a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Fighting Hawks cut the lead to two, 19-17, early in the second quarter, with points from three different players. USD would stretch its lead back to seven points at the three-minute mark of the second period, but back-to-back buckets from Kiyah Hurst and Kiera Pemberton would pull the Hawks with four, 29-25, heading into the halftime intermission. The rim wasn’t kind to either team in the opening 20 minutes, as they both shot 1-for-11 from beyond the three-point line and rather found the majority of their points in the paint. UND scored 16 of its 25 in the lane, while South Dakota tallied 20 of its 29 first half points in the paint. A low scoring first quarter saw the Coyotes leading 15-9 after 10 minutes of play. Kacie Borowicz had seven of the Hawks points in the frame, with Kiera Pemberton scoring the other bucket. The two teams combined to shoot 9-of-34 in the first period, and each had one three-pointer. South Dakota grabbed its largest lead of the game, 56-38, after two straight buckets three minutes into the fourth quarter. The Fighting Hawks deficit would move into the single digits with 1:28 remaining in the game following two free throws from Hurst. UND did over half of its scoring in the fourth from the free throw line, going 10-for-12 from the charity stripe. UND will be the six seed in next week’s Summit League Tournament and will face Oral Roberts in the quarterfinals round on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.

The Beavers were trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning when they first put runs on the board. Gutierrez put Minot State on the board with a two-out solo home run off Jack Slominski. The Roadrunners expanded their lead to 16-1 before the Beavers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the ninth. Minot State picked up two runs when a single from Iverson brought home Kozlowitz and Grant Gabbert, which tightened the Roadrunners lead to 16-3. The ballgame ended with that ninth-inning rally falling short.

GAME 2 | Metro State Denver 8, Minot State 4

The Minot State Beavers battled on Friday but fell in the nightcap of their doubleheader to the Metro State Denver Roadrunners 8-4 despite the efforts of Gunnar Kozlowitz, who went 1-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. Connor Meldrim (0-1) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. At the plate, the Beavers were paced by Kozlowitz, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a triple and an RBI. Grant Gabbert furnished a standout performance at the dish as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Javier Gutierrez also contributed for Minot State, putting together three walks. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with runs in the top of the first inning. Minot State put up two runs in the frame, highlighted by an RBI triple off the bat of Kozlowitz. The Beavers lost the lead they built in the first, but got back on the board in the third trailing 4-2. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Mark Ossanna, which brought the score to 4-3 in favor of the Roadrunners. Metro State Denver expanded their lead to 8-3 before the Minot State offense got going, reducing that lead to 8-4 in the sixth. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Ricky Apodaca. The Beavers were unable to get any closer as neither team scored again in the ballgame. The Beavers play at Colorado School of Mines today.

UND HOCKEY

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – No. 3 North Dakota moved one step closer to its sixth Penrose Cup on Friday night with a 5-3 victory over No. 12/11 Western Michigan from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. UND’s (23-8-2, 14-6-1 NCHC) win coupled with a Denver victory over St. Cloud State moves the Fighting Hawks six points ahead of the Huskies for first place in the league standings and gives the hosts a chance to win the regular season title with a regulation victory in the series finale.

Depth was on full display in the victory for the green and white, with all four of the forward lines notching at least a goal and 12 players notching at least a point. Sophomore forward Jackson Blake continued his torrid pace with a pair of assists to move within two points of breaking the NCHC scoring record with 34 points in just 21 league games. Goaltender Ludvig Persson was at his best once again, stopping 34-of-37 shots fired his way to improve to 20-8-2 on the campaign. The Swede was forced into action in all three periods, as the Fighting Hawks were outshot by a 37-17 margin, including 11-2 over the final 20 minutes. Much like it has done often at home this season, North Dakota jumped out to an early lead as Blake sprung Owen McLaughlin on a breakaway for the sophomore to bury his 11th goal of the season to give UND a 1-0 lead just 1:50 into the contest. After killing a penalty, NoDak got right back to work on the offensive end with Jackson Kunz collecting a loose puck in the crease and potting his second tally in the last two games while falling to the ice to double the UND lead just beyond the midway point of the opening stanza. Western Michigan (18-12-1, 9-12-0 NCHC) cut the lead to one heading into the first intermission, but a pair of goals in the middle stanza by the hosts flipped the momentum right back towards UND. Louis Jamernik V struck just 1:26 into the second after blowing by the defender and tucking a backhander over the goaltender’s pads for his seventh of the season and a 3-1 NoDak advantage before Carson Albrecht increased the lead to 4-1 by burying a rebound off a Hunter Johannes shot at the end of 40 minutes. The Broncos pushed for the equalizer in the third, cutting the lead to 4-3 with a pair of goals in a 1:33 span, but Persson and the rest of the Fighting Hawks were able to hold off the late charge while Cameron Berg salted away the win with an empty netter to seal the 5-3 victory. North Dakota will go for the series sweep over Western Michigan tonight at 6:07 p.m. from the Ralph.

WOLVES-KINGS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Malik Monk scored 35 of his 39 points after halftime and the Sacramento Kings defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 124-120 in overtime on Friday night. Anthony Edwards, Minnesota’s leading scorer, had 11 points in the first half but did not play after halftime due to personal reasons, according to team officials. Minnesota led 120-117 midway through the overtime period before Monk hit back-to-back 3-pointers. The Wolves had a chance to tie it with 17.5 seconds to play, but Naz Reid missed a corner 3 and Trey Lyles hit a free throw to clinch the victory. Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis had 21 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists before fouling out in overtime. Keegan Murray scored 17 points, Davion Mitchell had 16 and Harrison Barnes had 14 for the Kings, who were missing leading scorer De’Aaron Fox, who missed his second straight game with a left knee contusion. Monk made 16 of 29 shots, including 5 of 8 3-pointers, to make up for the absence of Fox’s 26.9 points per game. Jaden McDaniels led the Timberwolves with 26 points. Karl-Anthony Towns scored 19 points, Reid had 18 points and Rudy Gobert had 16 points and 16 rebounds. The Timberwolves host Clippers on Sunday.

TWINS-LEWIS

TAMPA (AP) – It didn’t take long for Royce Lewis to remember what it feels like to hit a grand slam. He did it four times last year. And in his first opportunity with the bases loaded in spring training, he did it again on Friday. The young Minnesota Twins slugger went deep in the third inning of a 5-3 win over the Boston Red Sox. Lewis’ homer came off minor leaguer Jordan DiValerio on a 3-0 pitch that he decided not to let go by. “I think these guys are just like, ‘What the heck, man, I don’t know what’s going on,’” Lewis told reporters in Fort Myers, Florida. “I said the same thing. I really don’t (know). I just enjoy it. Take advantage of the opportunities when they come because they’ll go away soon. You just take advantage while you get them.” Lewis has five grand slams in the first 66 games of his major league career. He hit one early in the 2022 season before a torn ACL in his right knee cost him almost an entire calendar year. Last season, Lewis hit four slams in just 12 plate appearances with the bases loaded, setting a franchise record. The 24-year-old did it despite being limited to only 58 games and 217 at-bats. “Well, you almost laugh to yourself a little bit that you’re in the situation again,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told reporters. “Even without the homer, you’re still sitting there like, ‘My god, it feels like we load the bases for this guy a lot,’ and he just keeps coming through, over and over again. It’s a good time. It’s fun. I hope we’re talking about it again in April, May and June.”

MSU MENS HOCKEY

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – The regular season finale did not disappoint for the hometown fans who made their way to the Maysa for some ACHA men’s hockey. Minot State, who was back to defend home ice one last time for the 2023-24 calendar year, took on Jamestown in the second leg of a back-to-back. On top of that, it was also Senior Night for the Beavers. There was a little bit of extra motivation to win one for the three Seniors. It was another rivalry matchup that went the way of the No. 1 Beavers (29-6-1), who sunk the 4th-ranked Jimmies (24-10-0) in a game with high-octane offense. The final score was 6-3 as Minot finished on a high note heading into the ACHA National Tournament. All throughout the game, the scoring was back-and-forth. Jamestown did not go down easy, as the Beavers would have to work on holding the Jimmies at bay.

Leading things off in the first, the Jimmies came ready to play. An opening goal on the rush gave Jamestown an early spark at 3:45. Not long after settling in, the Beavers would go to work as they capitalize on an early defensive zone turnover by the Jimmies to tie it at one apiece. Over three minutes later, the Beavers would find themselves on a power play opportunity. Speaking of being opportunistic, they would do exactly what they sought after and that is with a goal to go up 2-1 at 13:22 while on the man advantage. Minot did not stop attacking the Jimmie net, as they were swarming with chances towards the cage and bringing the heat. After a 2-1 first period, each team traded a goal in the second to stay at a one-goal lead for the Beavers. The score became 3-1 at 8:11 until the Jimmies answered after three straight by MSU. It became 3-2 at 11:30 and continued for the rest of the second.

The next goal would be crucial heading into the start of the third, and there the Beavers were again to pounce on a rebound shot for a 4-2 lead. That one came just under five minutes into the final period of regulation. The next five minutes belonged to Jamestown, as they tried to stay afloat. Things got close once again as the Jimmies brought the score to 4-3 at 9:39 in the third. Getting back in focus were the Beavers as they did not sit back and wait for the final horn, they upped the tempo. While the Jimmies waited to pull the goalie, the Beavers regained possession in the neutral zone and tallied a goal on a nice individual effort. At 18:30, it would be a back breaker for Jamestown, who now needed two goals in a minute and 30 seconds. Being aggressive late, the Jimmies decided to pull the netminder for the extra attacker right off the draw and it cost them. The Beavers clinched the 6-3 win on an empty netter with 1:14 left to go in the game.

Minot State honored Tre Sortland, Riley Wallace, and Carter Barley as the three graduating Seniors right before second period puck drop. There is a new team-leader in goals on the Beavers, as Carter Barley made his mark on Senior Night with two goals. Matthew Yakubowski is starting to heat up from the back end, his third of the season was the ice breaker as he drove the net for a rebound. Trenton Curtis found his way back into the lineup after some time off with injury and picked up his ninth of the year. Already with two assists in the game, Christian Kadolph added more to his stat sheet with his eighth. Putting the lead out of reach was Troy Hamilton, who grabbed the empty netter for his 15th. Senior netminder Riley Wallace picked up the start and was not heavily tested. He did enough for the Beavers, tallying 13 saves on 16 shots. That was not all that took place however, as coach Waselenchuk sent other Senior goalie Tre Sortland out to play in the final minute and 30 seconds of the game. He made a save on one solo shot as both goalies got playing time. That meant all three Seniors were able to hit the ice on their special occasion.

The Beavers grabbed win number six over Jamestown this year and the 22nd since joining MSU Athletics affiliation. And that does it for the 2023-24 regular season for Minot State men’s hockey. As the number one ranked team, they finish with a 29-6-1 record heading into the 2024 ACHA National Tournament. The Beavers also look to defend last year’s national title victory. Postseason play starts on March 7, but MSU gets a first-round bye so their first matchup will not take place until the quarterfinals on March 8. They face the winner between Illinois State and Grand Canyon.

UND WOMENS BASKETBALL

BROOKINGS, S.D. (UND) – The North Dakota women’s basketball team fell 107-47 to South Dakota State Thursday night in Frost Arena. After three early turnovers, the Fighting Hawks offense settled in at Frost Arena and knocked down five of their next six attempts from the field to pull within one point of the Jacks, 13-12. The Jacks, however, would answer with a 10-0 run to go up 23-12 and would carry a 25-16 into the second quarter. After scoring 40 points in UND’s last contest, Kacie Borowicz picked up right where she left off in the first quarter with 12 of UND’s 16 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Borowicz led all scorers with 23 points on the night and moved into the No. 2 spot in the UND record book for made free throws in a career. Pemberton had a team-high seven rebounds and chipped in six points. SDSU outscored UND 17-9 in the second quarter behind a defensive performance that held the Hawks to 4-of-18 from the field. On the other end, the Jacks shot .636 percent from the field with a pair of three-pointers and headed to half with a 42-25 lead. Boroiwcz paced the Hawks in the opening half with 18 points. Kiera Pemberton and Fatima Ibrahim were the other Hawks to find the bottom of the net with four and three points, respectively. The Jackrabbits exploded for 35 third quarter points behind 7-of-12 three-point shooting and .706 percent from the field. The Hawks were held to 4-of-12 from the field in the frame and were 0-3 from deep. The Jacks offensive outburst continued into the fourth quarter, as they shot 10-for-13 from the field to close out their win. Pemberton pulled down five of her seven boards in the second half, and eight Hawks scored in the final 20 minutes. The Fighting Hawks will continue their trek down I-29 on Saturday when they face South Dakota at 2:00 p.m. in their regular season finale.

UND MENS BASKETBALL

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – The North Dakota men’s basketball team returned to the Betty Thursday night for the final week of regular season action—facing off in a crucial game with South Dakota State that held immense sway in the race for the conference title. Despite leading at half, the Fighting Hawks were unable to hold the lead in the second half as SDSU shot lights out in the second frame to win. B.J. Omot and Tyree Ihenacho led the Fighting Hawks with 14 points, while Amar Kuljuhovic, Eli King and Ihenacho tied for the team lead with six rebounds. Ihenacho and King tied for the team lead with three assists and Ihenacho had three steals. After falling behind 6-2 in the early going, the green and white went on a 13-2 run that gave them a 15-8 lead. Treysen Eaglestaff hit his first three pointer of the night to start the run, but back-to-back threes from SDSU quickly brought it back to a one-point game. Later with the game at 22-21, UND went on an 11-2 run that made it a ten point game at 33-23. But SDSU got the final seven points of the half to pull within three at 33-30 going into intermission. Momentum stayed with the Jackrabbits to begin the second half on a 14-4 run that put them up 44-37. But the pendulum swung back the other way once against as NoDak went on an 8-1 run later in the half to tie it up at 50, then Eaglestaff dropped in another three that put the Fighting Hawks back on top with 11:06 to go. From there, SDSU made three straight three-pointers and gained a lead they would hold onto the rest of the way. The Fighting Hawks close out the regular season against South Dakota on Saturday, which is Senior Day.

TIMBERWOLVES-SPURS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Anthony Edwards scored 34 points, returning from an injury scare right before halftime, and the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the San Antonio Spurs 114-105 on Tuesday night without All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns missed the game due to personal reasons. Earlier in the day, Towns memorialized a high school teammate on Instagram. Minnesota coach Chris Finch said before the game that he hoped Towns would only miss one game. Rudy Gobert, back after missing a game with a left ankle sprain, added 13 points and 17 rebounds for the Timberwolves in his latest matchup with fellow French countryman Victor Wembanyama. Wembanyama had 17 points and 13 rebounds as San Antonio lost its fifth in a row and 12 of its past 13 games. Wembanyama scored eight points in just over five minutes to open the game but didn’t score again until a 3 with 2:55 left in the third quarter. Naz Reid added 22 points off the bench for Minnesota, which has won six of seven and started the day tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder atop the Western Conference at 40-17. The Timberwolves host Memphis on Wednesday.

WILD-HURRICANES

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Stefan Noesen scored a goal with his face midway through the third period and the Carolina Hurricanes rallied to beat the Minnesota Wild 3-2 on Tuesday night. Jordan Staal had a goal and assist and Andrei Svechnikov also scored for the Hurricanes, which won for the first time in three games and improved to 10-1-2 in their last 13 road games. Just as a power play was expiring, Teuvo Teravainen passed down low to Jack Drury. His shot went off the blocker of Filip Gustavsson and deflected off Noesen’s face near the left post as he was tied up by Dakota Mermis. Connor Dewar and Jonas Brodin scored for Minnesota, which lost in regulation for just the second time in 10 games since the All-Star break. Ryan Hartman assisted on both goals and Gustavsson stopped 25 shots. The loss was two points badly needed by the Wild, 7-2-1 since the All-Star break. Minnesota is tied with St. Louis, six points back of Nashville for the final Western Conference playoff spot. Minnesota’s next two games are against the Predators and Blues. The Wild play at Nashville on Thursday.

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (MSU) – Jonah Prokott did not allow an earned run and his teammates helped him out with a late rally as the Beaver baseball team beat host Concordia, St. Paul 6-3 to open an NSIC doubleheader on Monday. The Golden Bears bounced back to take the nightcap, 14-4 in 8 innings to wrap up the series. Minot State (2-6 overall, 1-3 NSIC) returns to the diamond this weekend in Denver, Colorado playing Metro State in a doubleheader on Friday.

GAME 1 | Minot State 6, Concordia-Saint Paul 3

Sophomore Jonah Prokott fanned seven Concordia, Saint Paul hitters over five innings of work to help lead the Minot State Beavers over the Golden Bears 6-3 on Monday in the opener of an NSIC doubleheader. In addition to his seven strikeouts, Prokott (1-0) went five innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on four hits and walking one for Minot State. Junior Devin Marton also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, throwing one shutout inning while allowing no hits, with one walk and two strikeouts to earn his first save of the season. Sophomore Noah Madas led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and an RBI. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw put together a standout day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a triple and an RBI. Junior Gunnar Kozlowitz also helped out, going 1-for-2 for Minot State with two walks and an RBI.

The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Junior Seugjun Song came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The Golden Bears failed to push any runs across before the Beavers built on their lead in the third inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Kozlowitz, which brought the Beavers lead to 2-0. Minot State’s lead had disappeared once the fourth inning arrived and turned into a 3-2 Concordia, Saint Paul advantage, when the Beavers tied up the game at three. The Beavers picked up a run on Madas’ one-out solo home run off Reece Piontek. The game remained tied until the very next inning, when Minot State got moving again on offense. The Beavers sent in two runs when a single from senior Martin Rodriquez brought home Kozlowitz and senior Cameron Carr, bringing the Minot State advantage to 5-3. The Beavers kept Concordia, Saint Paul off the scoreboard before building their lead to 6-3 the following inning. Junior Brent Riddle came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The score remained 6-3 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers held on for the win.

GAME 2 | Concordia-Saint Paul 14, Minot State 4

The Minot State Beavers got a boost from junior Grant Gabbert, who strung together three hits in a 14-4 loss to the Concordia, Saint Paul Golden Bears on Monday in the nightcap of an NSIC doubleheader. Senior Tim Carlson (0-2) started and took the loss on the mound for Minot State. Junior Hayden Bode was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going one shutout inning without allowing a hit, walking none and striking out two. In addition to his three hits, Gabbert had a triple, a home run and two RBI to lead the Beavers. Junior Brent Riddle put together a standout performance as well, going 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Senior Cameron Carr also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in four trips to the plate while adding a double and an RBI. The Beavers were trailing 4-0 in the third inning when they first put runs on the board. Riddle put Minot State on the board with a one-out solo home run off Ian Segna. The Golden Bears expanded their lead to 11-1 before the Beavers offense got back to work, cutting into that lead in the fourth. Minot State picked up a run on Gabbert’s leadoff home run off of Segna, which brought the score to 11-2 in favor of the Golden Bears. Concordia, Saint Paul built their lead to 12-2 before the Minot State offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 12-3 in the fifth. The Beavers picked up a run on Carr’s two-out RBI double. The Golden Bears expanded their lead to 13-3 before the Minot State offense got back in action, cutting into that lead in the seventh. The Beavers sent in a run on an RBI triple off the bat of Gabbert, scoring sophomore Colton Bagshaw, tightening the Concordia, Saint Paul lead to 13-4. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as Concordia, Saint Paul added one run to their tally on the way to a 14-4 final.

ND HOCKEY-HONORS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (UND) – Sophomore forward Jackson Blake and freshman defenseman Jake Livanavage were each honored with weekly awards by the NCHC, the league announced on Monday evening. Blake was named the NCHC Forward of the Week for the second time this season while Livanavage earned NCHC Defenseman of the Week for the second time as well.

Blake powered North Dakota to a sweep of Minnesota Duluth with a seven-point weekend, tallying three more points than any other NCHC player over the weekend. On Friday, Blake recorded a career-high five points, as he had a hand in all but one goal in UND’s 6-0 shutout of the Bulldogs. The Carolina Hurricanes draft pick opened the scoring only 1:05 into the game Friday, with his goal serving as the game-winner. He then assisted on UND’s final four goals, with the first three primary helpers, including a highlight-reel steal and set-up on the Fighting Hawks’ fifth goal. Blake was named the game’s first star on Friday. The next night, he doled out two more primary assists in a 4-2 victory, setting up each of UND’s first two tallies. Blake finished the series with a game-winning goal and six assists, including five primary helpers, to record the first seven-point weekend by a UND player since Mark MacMillan did it against Colorado College on Oct. 17-18, 2014. He also fired seven shots on goal and posted a +4 plus/minus, tying for the NCHC lead on the weekend. Blake now has 17 points in his last eight games and is tied for the NCHC scoring lead with 47 points (18g/29a) overall this year, which ties for fifth nationally. His 32 points and 22 assists in conference play are both first in the NCHC.

Livanavage contributed at both ends of the ice in North Dakota’s sweep of Minnesota Duluth. Defensively, he helped limit the Bulldogs to two goals all weekend, including a shutout in Friday’s opener, while playing on a penalty kill unit that was a perfect 3-for-3. Offensively, Livanavage handed out a trio of assists, including two in Friday’s 6-0 victory, with all three helpers coming on the power play as UND went 3-for-9 on the man advantage. He had the primary assist on UND’s first goal Friday (by Jackson Blake), which was the game-winner, then also had a hand in the Fighting Hawks’ fourth goal Friday and set up UND’s first goal again on Saturday in a 4-2 win. Along with the three assists, Livanavage blocked three shots in the sweep and finished with a +2 plus/minus. He’s now riding a three-game point streak and ranks second among freshman defensemen in the NCHC with 22 points (3g/19a) in 32 games this season. His 22 points are seventh among all NCHC blueliners this year.
North Dakota, which leaped back to No. 3 in both polls this week, is set to host No. 12/11 Western Michigan in the final home series of the regular season beginning on Friday night at 7:06 p.m. from Ralph Engelstad Arena.

TWINS-TRADE

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Twins acquired outfielder Manuel Margot, minor league shortstop Rayne Doncon and cash on Monday from the Los Angeles Dodgers for minor league shortstop Noah Miller. In conjunction with the trade, the Dodgers announced a $4 million, one-year contract to keep Kiké Hernández.

The 29-year-old Margot just joined the Dodgers two months ago with starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow in a trade with Tampa Bay. Margot hit .264 with a .686 OPS in 99 games for the Rays last season while playing center field and right field. He has also played left field. Margot made his major league debut with San Diego in 2016 and was the primary center fielder for the Padres from 2017-19, before being traded to the Rays. In 788 career games, he’s batted .255 with a .694 OPS, 52 home runs and 91 stolen bases. Margot has a $10 million salary this season as part of a $19 million, two-year contract he signed with the Rays, a deal that includes a $12 million mutual option for 2025 with a $2 million buyout. If the option is not exercised, the Rays must pay the Dodgers an additional $2 million as part of the Glasnow trade. The Rays agreed to send the Dodgers an additional $2 million toward Margot’s salary for 2024, and Twins president of baseball operations Derek Falvey said his club will receive that $4 million commitment as well as an unspecified amount on top of that from the Dodgers to cover Margot’s salary. The Twins have pared back their payroll in 2024 in light of a reduction in regional television revenue. Margot will essentially replace Michael A. Taylor, who became a free agent after hitting a career-high 21 homers and playing 126 games in center field last season while star Byron Buxton was limited to designated hitter duty due to knee trouble. Buxton is healthy again and on track to be the regular center fielder, with Matt Wallner in left and Max Kepler in right, but utilityman Willi Castro was the only other sure bet for the opening day roster with reliable outfield experience. Margot was a player the Twins had targeted for a while as a fit for his exceptional defensive ability in the corners as well as his capability of handling center field when Buxton is out of the lineup.

The 20-year-old Doncon played last season for Class A Rancho Cucamonga. He was signed out of the Dominican Republic. Miller was the 36th overall pick by the Twins in the 2021 amateur draft. The 21-year-old finished last season with Class A Cedar Rapids. Hernández hit .237 with 11 home runs and 61 RBIs in 140 games with the Red Sox and Dodgers in 2023 while playing all four infield and all three outfield positions. The 33-year-old was reacquired by the Dodgers from Boston on July 25 and became a free agent after the World Series. Hernández has played in 10 major league seasons, including parts of seven with the Dodgers.

ROSEVILLE, Minn. (MSU) – The Beavers opened NSIC play Sunday with a strong pitching performance only to see game one slip away in a last at-bat rally that sparked host Concordia, St. Paul to a doubleheader sweep. The Golden Bears rallied for three runs for a walk-off, 3-2 victory to start the day, then completed the sweep of Minot State (1-5 overall, 0-2 NSIC) with a 10-6 win in the nightcap. The two teams play another doubleheader starting at noon today.

Senior Cameron Carr put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Junior Grant Gabbert also chipped in for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double. The Beavers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The Beavers then held the Golden Bears scoreless before expanding their lead in the seventh inning. Minot State scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Rodriquez, which brought the Beavers lead to 2-0. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Concordia, Saint Paul scored three times in the bottom half of the seventh to grab the 3-2 win.

GAME 2 | Concordia-Saint Paul 10, Minot State 6

Four Minot State players recorded at least two hits, but the Beavers fell to the Concordia, Saint Paul Golden Bears 10-6 on Sunday in NSIC play. Junior Gage Yost (0-2) got the ball to start for Minot State and took the loss. Freshman Conner Meldrim was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen and throwing one scoreless inning, allowing no hits, with no walks and one strikeout. Junior Seugjun Song led the hit barrage for the Beavers, going 2-for-5 in the ballgame. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw put together a standout performance as well, going 1-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Trailing 3-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Minot State plated two runs when Bagshaw left the yard with Song aboard. The Beavers deficit grew to 10-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the eighth inning. Minot State scored three runs in the frame, buoyed by a two-RBI double from senior Cameron Carr, which tightened the Golden Bears lead to 10-5. Minot State kept the Golden Bears off the board before narrowing the gap to 10-6 in the ninth. The Beavers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of junior Gunnar Kozlowitz. The ballgame ended with that ninth-inning rally falling short.

MSU WOMENS WRESTLING

DENTON, Texas (MSU) – Softball will have to wait a few more weeks for Minot State’s two-sport student-athlete Haleigh Lematta. Lematta extended her wrestling season on Sunday as she earned her first trip to the NCWWC National Championships, finishing fourth in the 143-pound weight class and then winning a wrestle-off at the NCWWC Region VI Tournament hosted by Texas Woman’s University. Lematta becomes the fourth Minot State women’s wrestler to qualify for nationals in just two years as a collegiate program. She joins Jazmin Gorder, Annika Gotlieb, and Nina Sandoval who all qualified for nationals last year in the Beavers inaugural season. Lematta will be the lone Beaver at nationals this year, but teammate Julia Petryna was poised to make the trip, as well, finishing fifth in the 116-pound weight class and earning a spot in a wrestle-off only to fall to Jaia Ashley of Schreiner University in that extra match. Petryna went 3-2 on the day picking up a 10-0 technical fall victory over teammate Skye Shelmerdine and a 15-5 technical fall win over Sioux Falls’ Paige Denke, then collecting a forfeit victory over Cassandra Witte of Chadron State in the fifth-place match to earn her shot in the wrestle-off. As for Lematta, her day started with a 6-3 decision win over Linfield’s Klaira Flatt in the championship quarterfinals before a tie-breaker loss in the semifinals sent her into consolation-bracket action. In the consolation semifinals, Lematta pinned Karstin Hollen of Chadron State in 3 minutes, 21 seconds before falling by pin in the third-place match to Erica Schroeder of Colorado Mesa. Unfazed by the setback, Lematta took the mat with nationals at stake and pinned Jermariah Ferguson of the host school, Texas Woman’s, in 2:47, earning a spot at the NCWWC National Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 9-10. The performance of Lematta and Petryna helped lead the Beavers to a seventh-place finish as a team with 34 points in the 10-team regional. Adding to the Beavers score was Ari Korish at 123 pounds as she finished eighth and picked up a win by forfeit over teammate Jazmin Gorder on the day, and Madison Parsons who also finished eighth at 191 pounds.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – Connor Hollenbeck and Caleb Van De Griend both recorded double-doubles to help lead the Minot State men’s basketball team over the Sioux Falls Cougars 79-55 on the road Saturday in the NSIC regular-season finale for both teams. With the win Minot State match its most wins in a season as an NCAA program with 20 and also secured the No. 4 seed in the NSIC and an automatic berth in the NSIC Tournament quarterfinals. Minot State returns to Sioux Falls next weekend for a quarterfinal game on Sunday, March 3, at 11 a.m. at the Sanford Pentagon against the winner of a first-round game Wednesday night in the NSIC Tournament. The Beavers (20-8 overall, 15-7 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Hollenbeck, who put together a double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Khari Broadway tacked on 19 points and seven rebounds and Van De Griend helped out with a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Led by Hollenbeck’s four offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in 14 second-chance points. Minot State’s defense held Sioux Falls to only 27 percent shooting from the field, including 21.4 percent from beyond the arc. Minot State kept its lead intact before going on a 9-0 run, finished off by Hollenbeck’s jumper, to grow the lead to 44-29 with 15:32 to go in the contest. The Beavers kept expanding the margin and coasted the rest of the way for the 79-55 win. Minot State took care of business in the paint, recording 22 of its 44 points in the lane.

MSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (MSU) – The Beavers earned their first trip to the postseason since 2019-20 in dramatic fashion Saturday afternoon. Needing a win to avoid tie-breakers and automatically punch its ticket to the NSIC Tournament, the Minot State women’s basketball team erased a 15-point deficit with six minutes left to play and toppled host Sioux Falls 65-64 in the final regular season game for both NSIC foes. With the victory, the Beavers secured the 10th seed in next week’s NSIC Tournament as they tied with the Cougars with matching 7-15 NSIC records, but Minot State wins the head-to-head tie-break by virtue of sweeping Sioux Falls this season, beating them 62-60 at the MSU Dome in January and securing Saturday’s 65-64 victory. The Beavers (10-21 overall) next will play in the NSIC Tournament first round on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at 7th-seeded St. Cloud State. The Huskies won both meetings with the Beavers this season. Lorelei McIver hit a buzzer-beating shot with just two seconds left on the clock to lead the Minot State women’s basketball team past the Sioux Falls Cougars. The Beavers had four players score in double figures, led by Maya Aguilar, who had 14 points, six rebounds and six steals. Sydney Gustavsson tacked on 13 points and three steals and McIver chipped in as well with 11 points. Led by Gustavsson’s four offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 11 boards that resulted in seven second-chance points. Minot State forced 25 Sioux Falls turnovers while committing 18 themselves in Saturday’s game. The Beavers turned those takeaways into 27 points on the offensive end of the floor. Aguilar’s six steals led the way for Minot State.

MSU TRACK & FIELD

MANKATO, Minn. (MSU) – The weekend belongs to Minot State’s Bailey Wride. The freshman middle-distance runner stole the show for the Beavers this weekend, writing her name into the Minot State record books on Friday then breaking her own record while claiming her first NSIC Championship on Saturday in the women’s 600 meters at the NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Minnesota State, Mankato. Friday Wride broke the NCAA Division II record in the 600 meters, qualifying for Saturday’s finals with a time of 1 minute, 38.32 seconds. She broke the old record of 1:38.81 run by Whitney Hanson in 2020. Saturday, she shattered her own record and the all-time school record in the event while blowing past her NSIC competitors as well, racing to her first NSIC championship in a time of 1:36.76 to win the 600 meters. That time broke the all-time Minot State record in the event of 1:37.67 run by Vicky Anderson in 2004. Wride’s win helped power the Minot State women to a ninth-place team finish out of 14 teams as the Beavers scored 18 points.

Wride also earned All-NSIC honors with her championship and was the lone Beaver to do so on the weekend, though a few other Minot State student-athletes came close as they scored for the Beavers. That included teammate Sidra Sadowsky who was fourth in women’s 800 meter in 2:17.53 on Saturday, missing All-NSIC honors by one spot. Wride and Sadowsky also teamed up on Friday with Paulette Dominguez, and Nicole Reeves to set one more all-time school record for the Beaver ladies as they finished sixth in the medley relay in 12:16.86, breaking the previous all-time record of 12:33.35 run by Sadowsky, Alica Murillo, Emily Hansen, and Caitlin Cornell in 2022.

On the men’s side, Minot State finished 10th out of 11 teams with 11 points. Peyton Tuhy led the way as he broke the NCAA Division II-era record in the men’s 1,000 meters in the prelims on Friday with a time of 2:31.88, then finished sixth in the finals on Saturday in 2:32.32, one of three Minot State individuals to score for the Beavers. Jasiah Hambria added to Minot State’s team score as he also was sixth in the men’s high jump clearing 6 feet, 7 inches, and Jacob Jensen was seventh in mile in 4:17.15 for the Beavers. The Minot State men’s 4×400-meter relay team also added points to the team total as Ramon Duran, Francis Short Bull, Nathan Trujillo-Aragon, and Devontae Daley were sixth in 3:21.70.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – North Dakota State junior Andrew Morgan scored 27 points to lead the Bison men’s basketball team to a thrilling 73-68 victory over North Dakota on Saturday afternoon inside a packed Scheels Center. The Bison improved to 17-7 over 24 meetings against UND in the Division I era. NDSU has now won 11 of the past 14 games against the Fighting Hawks. With the win, NDSU climbed to 8-6 in the Summit League and third place in the league standings. Morgan made 11-of-15 shots in the game, including 2-of-3 from beyond the arc. The Bison trailed 61-54 with 6:30 remaining in the contest. A slashing, acrobatic bucket by Damari Wheeler-Thomas, a dunk by Morgan, and a three from Morgan sent the 5,058 fans into a frenzy and put the Bison up 62-61 with five minutes left. NDSU outscored UND 19-7 over the final 6:30 to pull out the win. The Bison shot 49 percent for the game and limited UND to 37-percent shooting. Boden Skunberg scored 15 points for NDSU, and Jacari White had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Noah Feddersen led the Bison with eight rebounds. NDSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State women’s basketball team dismantled North Dakota, 107-80, to extend its win streak to seven games on Saturday afternoon at Scheels Center in front of 2,502 fans. With the win, the Bison complete the regular season sweep of North Dakota and improve to 18-9 (12-2 Summit) on the season. NDSU also pushed its season-best win streak to seven games, which is the longest winning streak for the Bison since winning 24 straight in the 2004-05 season. Additionally, head coach Jory Collins notched his 73rd win with the Bison to move into second place all-time in program history behind Amy Ruley, who won 671 career games. NDSU had six players reach double figures in scoring with Elle Evans setting the pace with her third straight 20-point performance with 21 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three. Heaven Hamling poured in 17 points with a game-high five assists. Abby Schulte filled her stat line with 15 points, career-high six steals, five rebounds and four assists. Miriley Simon (15), Abbie Draper (14) and Leah Mackenzie (11) also reached double digits in scoring. As a team, the Bison drained 15 three-pointers on 23 attempts with seven different players contributing at least one. That mark is tied for the fifth-most all-time and one away from the program record of 16, which the Bison have reached in four separate games. NDSU also shot 59.6 percent (34-57) from the field and 75.0 percent (24-32) from the free throw line. NDSU got off to fast start shooting 63.2 percent from the field in the opening quarter to build up a 31-16 lead at the 1:10 mark after Evans drained a triple. The Bison then stretched their advantage to 40-21 in the second frame after Draper connected on a layup with 8:19 to play in the half. NDSU led at the intermission, 56-43. The Fighting Hawks (9-18, 5-9 Summit) attempted to rally in the third quarter trimming the deficit down to 10, 70-60, following a pair of free throws from Kiera Pemberton at the 2:51 mark. The Bison responded closing the quarter on an 8-2 run capped off by jumper from Hamling to make the score 83-63. NDSU went on close out the final 10 minutes to secure the regular season series over North Dakota, 107-80. NDSU will be back in action hosting South Dakota on Thursday. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m., at Scheels Center.

UND HOCKEY

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Sophomore forward Dylan James scored a pair of highlight goals in the third period to help No. 4/5 North Dakota defeat Minnesota Duluth, 4-2, and notch a weekend sweep on Saturday night from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. With the sweep, UND (22-8-2, 13-6-1 NCHC) remains in first place in the NCHC standings and holds a three-point lead over St. Cloud State with four regular season games (12 points) remaining. The Fighting Hawks are also just one point away from clinching home ice for the NCHC Quarterfinals, awarded to the top-4 teams in the league standings. James broke a 2-2 deadlock in the third period with his second two-goal game of his career to help the Fighting Hawks complete a regular season sweep over Minnesota Duluth (10-17-4, 6-13-1 NCHC) for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Fellow sophomore forward Jackson Blake continued his torrid offensive weekend with a pair of assists to give the Eden Prairie, Minn., native seven points (1G, 5A) over the two games while Jayden Perron and Jackson Kunz each struck for a goal in the victory. Ludvig Persson saw his shutout streak against Minnesota Duluth end in the second period at 152:45, but finished with 26 saves on 28 shots to improve to 19-8-2 this season between the pipes. It was a slower start to the game offensively in the finale, with neither side generating too many quality scoring chances in the opening stanza. UND was able to finally get on the board with just under three minutes remaining in the period, as Perron pounced a loose puck in the slot and tucked home his second goal of the weekend and 10th of the season to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes. NoDak doubled its advantage early in the second, as Blake beat his defender and feathered a perfect pass to Kunz streaking to the far post who finishes off his fifth goal of the season to extend the lead to 2-0. Minnesota Duluth was able to answer back, however, potting back-to-back goals in just over three minutes of play to knot the contest at 2-2 heading into the third. James took over in the third period, giving UND the lead by racing past the defender, cutting to the slot and tucking the puck past the goaltender just over four minutes into the frame to put the Hawks in front, 3-2. The sophomore added the fourth tuck of the night for the hosts as Owen McLaughlin flipped a puck from UND’s defensive zone into space for James to use his speed and bury his second of the game to seal the 4-2 victory and weekend sweep. North Dakota will remain home for a weekend series with Western Michigan beginning on Friday night at 7:07 p.m. from the Ralph.

Cam Thomas led Brooklyn with 18 points. Nets leading scorer Mikal Bridges, who entered Saturday averaging 21.7 points per game, added 15 points. The win puts the Timberwolves a half-game ahead of idle Oklahoma City in the conference. The Nets fell to 0-2 under interim head coach Kevin Ollie. MSU WOMENS HOCKEY

LYNCHBURG, VA. (MSU) – Day two of the WMCH Conference Tournament saw plenty of action, with a total of four games featuring two consolation matches and the other two as semifinals. The Minot State women’s hockey team had the right to play in one of those semifinal games, but the competition ramps up the further the rounds go. 2-seed Midland University, who is still undefeated, was the next task for the Beavers. The 3rd-seeded Beavers could not muster anything versus Midland, as the Warriors shut out Minot State in a 2-0 final score. Throughout the first two periods of regulation, the Beavers weathered the storm despite being heavily outshot by Midland. There were still donuts on the scoreboard heading into the third period, until a costly penalty by the Beavers would give Midland the break they were looking for on a fresh set of ice. A power-play goal at the 44-second mark of the third finally got the scoring started. The Beavers would end up behind the eight ball early in the final period of regulation, while in need of an answer fast. After almost 19 minutes passed by, the Warriors picked up the dagger to make it 2-0 with 19 seconds left in the third period. That goal gassed any possible rallying momentum left by the Beavers. Haylie Biever played her heart out by making 31 saves on 33 shots in the contest. Midland picks up win number seven this year versus Minot State, both regular season and postseason combined. All-time, it is the Warriors 14th win over the Beavers. That puts a wrap for the Beavers at the WMCH Conference Tournament. Up next is a trip to St. Louis for the 2024 ACHA National Tournament, where they hope to push forward in a return to the championship game. The festivities start March 13 and run through the 17th.

MSU MENS BASKETBALL

MARSHALL, Minn. (MSU) – The Minot State offense put on a ball-movement clinic on the road Friday, collecting 11 assists on 16 made shots, but the Beavers fell to the host Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs 72-53 in NSIC action. The Beavers (19-8 overall, 14-7 NSIC) had four players score in double figures, led by Michael Jok, who had 15 points. Connor Hollenbeck tacked on 12 points and Khari Broadway helped out with 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals. Led by Broadway’s three offensive rebounds, Minot State did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in nine second-chance points. Minot State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 32-19 heading into halftime. Southwest Minnesota State kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 41-21 advantage before Minot State went on an 8-0 run, finished off by Broadway’s layup, to shrink the deficit to 41-29 with 14:50 to go in the contest. Southwest Minnesota State responded and outscored the Beavers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 72-53. Minot State capitalized on seven Southwest Minnesota State turnovers in the period, collecting 10 points off those turnovers. The Beavers play at Sioux Falls today.

MSU WOMENS BASKETBALL

MARSHALL, Minn. (MSU) – The Minot State women’s basketball team got a 29-point performance from the bench, but fell 78-61 to the Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs on the road Friday in NSIC play. The Beavers (9-21ovetall, 6-15 NSIC) had two players score in double figures, led by Maya Aguilar, who had 16 points. Sydney Gustavsson added 14 points and Lorelei McIver added eight points and three steals. After falling behind 10-4, Minot State went on a 5-0 run with 1:43 left in the first quarter to narrow its deficit to 10-9. Southwest Minnesota State answered back and added to its lead, leaving the Beavers down 13-11 entering the second quarter. The Beavers continued to lose ground in the second quarter and faced a 30-26 halftime deficit. Minot State’s deficit continued to grow after halftime, and the Beavers faced a 55-45 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. Minot State played well near the basket, scoring 14 of its 19 points in the paint. Minot State could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 78-61. Minot State got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 11 of its 16 total points.

MSU SOFTBALL

TOPEKA, Kan. (MSU) – Taryn Bennett blasted a 3-run homer in the opener for Minot State and Brooklyn Morrison added a 2-run homer for the Beavers in their second game on Friday in the Washburn Invitational. Despite the offensive fireworks, Minot State (5-5 overall) still dropped both games, losing 12-7 to Emporia State to start the day and falling 7-2 to Pittsburg State in the Beavers second game of the day.

EMPORIA STATE 12, MINOT STATE 7

Minot State got contributions from every part of their lineup, as all nine starters reached base safely, but the Beavers fell to the Emporia State Hornets 12-7 Friday. Sophomore Kierra Fournier (2-1) got the ball to start for Minot State (5-4) and took the loss. Senior Gabi Dawyduk was a bright spot for the Beavers, starting the ballgame and throwing four innings, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits, with three walks and one strikeout. Senior Taryn Bennett led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 1-for-4 in the ballgame with a home run and three RBI. Dawyduk put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 1-for-1 with a double, two walks and an RBI. Sophomore Anna LaCount also chipped in, going 2-for-4 for Minot State with a double and an RBI. Trailing 10-0, the Beavers first put runs on the board in the fourth inning. Minot State scored twice in the inning on run-scoring doubles from senior Kilee Fehd and LaCount. The Beavers deficit grew to 12-2 before their offense got back on the scoreboard, cutting into that deficit in the fifth inning. Minot State scored three runs, all of them coming on a three-run homer off the bat of Bennett, scoring sophomore Sara Van Wickler and junior Abby Lohse, which brought the score to 12-5 in favor of the Hornets. Minot State held the Hornets off the scoreboard before narrowing the gap to 12-7 in the sixth. The Beavers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

PITTSBURG STATE 7, MINOT STATE 2

Senior Brooklyn Morrison went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI for the Minot State Beavers in a 7-2 loss to the No. 18 Pittsburg State Gorillas on Friday. Junior Reegan Floyd (1-1) started and took the loss in the circle for Minot State (5-5). Morrison led the way offensively for the Beavers, going 2-for-3 in the ballgame with a home run and two RBI. Junior Abby Lohse put together a standout performance at the plate as well, going 1-for-3 with a double. The Beavers were trailing 7-0 in the seventh inning when they first put runs on the board. Minot State plated two runs when Morrison left the yard with Lohse aboard. The ballgame ended with that seventh inning rally falling short.

Minot State is back in action playing Central Missouri and Washburn today in the tournament.

UND HOCKEY

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (UND) – Sophomore forward Jackson Blake struck for five points to help No. 4/5 North Dakota roll to a 6-0 win over Minnesota Duluth on Friday night from Ralph Engelstad Arena in Grand Forks. The sophomore had his fingerprints all over the victory for UND (21-8-2, 12-6-1 NCHC), scoring a goal and dishing out five assists to become the first NoDak player with five points in a game since Collin Adams did it on Mar. 12, 2021 against Miami in the NCHC Quarterfinals. Blake wasn’t alone in recording a strong offensive night for the hosts, as Cameron Berg (2G, 1A), Riese Gaber (1G, 1A) and Jake Livanavage (2A) each also tallied multiple points in the largest victory over Minnesota Duluth (10-16-4, 6-12-1 NCHC) since an 8-2 win on Mar. 11, 2005. Ludvig Persson was strong between the pipes as well, finishing with 17 saves to notch his fourth shutout of the season and improve to 18-8-2 this season. NoDak jumped out to an early lead and never relinquished it with a trio of goals in the opening 20 minutes to grab a 3-0 advantage. Blake struck just 65 seconds into the contest with his 18th tally of the season and fifth on the power play through a great Jackson Kunz screen before Jayden Perron increased the advantage to 2-0 just three minutes later a breakaway. With the period dwindling down, Gaber increased the lead to 3-0 with a rocket from the top of the circle in the final period of the stanza to send the hosts to the locker room with the three-goal advantage. Berg took over in the middle stanza, striking for a pair of goals to build a 5-0 lead. The junior blasted home his team-leading eighth power play marker of the year to make it 4-0 before Blake’s great individual effort led to a perfect pass for a one-time goal by Berg to give the West Fargo, N.D., native his third game of the season with multiple tallies and a 5-0 lead after 40. Owen McLaughlin added the finishing touches on the victory early in the third period, as Blake picked up the secondary assist to give him a five-point night while Kunz’s primary helper saw every forward in the top-6 record at least a point as UND polished off the 6-0 win. North Dakota goes for the weekend and season sweep over Minnesota Duluth on Saturday night at 6:07 p.m. from the Ralph.

WILD-OILERS

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — Matt Boldy scored a twice as the Minnesota Wild beat the Edmonton Oilers 4-2 on Friday night. Jonas Brodin and Mats Zuccarello also scored for the Wild, who are 6-1-1 in their last eight games. Filip Gustavsson stopped 41 shots to help Minnesota pull two points behind St. Louis for the second wild card in the Western Conference. Leon Draisaitl and Zach Hyman had goals for the Oilers, who have lost two in a row but are 28-7-1 in their last 36 games. Calvin Pickard finished with 16 saves.

TIMBERWOLVES-BUCKS

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 13 rebounds to help the Milwaukee Bucks surge out of the All-Star break with a 112-107 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday night. Minnesota dropped into a tie with Oklahoma City for the Western Conference lead at 39-17. The Thunder routed Washington 147-106 earlier Friday. Anthony Edwards made three 3-pointers in the final 1:58 to give the Wolves a late chance after falling behind by 17 points late in the third quarter, but Damian Lillard iced it for the Bucks with a pullup 21-footer with 10.3 seconds left for the five-point lead. Malik Beasley scored all 14 of his points in the third, when the Bucks outscored the Wolves 36-13. Karl-Anthony Towns (22 points, 14 rebounds) and Rudy Gobert (12 points, 19 rebounds) helped the Wolves build a 32-14 second-chance points advantage, but their sloppy third quarter was too much to overcome. The Wolves, who played their first of seven straight home games, showed the dreaded post-break rust for most of the game. The Timberwolves host Brooklyn today.

MSU WOMENS HOCKEY

LYNCHBURG, VA. (MSU) – The postseason is underway for the Minot State women’s hockey team, and there was no better way than ramping up the race than a date with fellow in-state foe Jamestown. It begins with the WMCH Conference Tournament as the quarterfinal round is getting underway. 3rd-seeded Minot State matched up with Jamestown, who was the 6th-seed. It was a battle from start to finish, but in the end, all the Beavers needed was one goal to secure the 1-0 win over the Jimmies. After a scoreless first frame, a shot from the point trickled through traffic at 7:36 of the second period as the Beavers took advantage of a critical power play opportunity. That one would stay as the game winner with no scoring to be had the rest of the contest, allowing Minot to advance to the WMCH semifinals. In her playoff debut, Kaitlyn Snyder scored the lone goal which ended up being the game winner. Her seventh total of the year hit on one of seven power play opportunities for the Beavers in the contest. It was also a key goal that finally solved Jamestown’s Lilah Drew, who was on her best effort all game. Even though most of the attacking pressure was forced on the Jimmies end, it was a netminders’ duel all throughout the match. Jamestown made a valiant effort to stop pucks but fell short of winning goalie Haylie Biever, who made a perfect 17 saves out of 17 shots for the shutout. Make that win number nine for the Beavers over Jamestown this year, counting both regular and postseason and the 18th in the all-time series. After the 2-seeded Midland / 7-seeded Minnesota matchup went final, Minot State moves on to face the Warriors, who defeated Minnesota in the quarterfinal game following Beavers-Jimmies. Puck drop tomorrow is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. (ET).

MINOT, N.D. (MSU) – For the final chapter of the Highway 83 rivalry in the 2023-24 regular season, it was a rather lopsided contest as the Minot State men’s hockey team welcomed University of Mary. This one would be the last time both teams meet in the regular season, with a game on hand at Maysa Arena. The No. 1 Beavers (27-6-1) were everywhere tonight as they dismantled in-state rival Mary (25-13-0) by a final score of 7-0. After previously falling in the Midwest College Hockey Conference championship, it was a game to forget for the Marauders as they look to quickly turn their attention span to the National Tournament. Meanwhile for the Beavers, they took control of the game from start to finish all while scoring in every period. To go along with a few multi-goal efforts in the contest, the Beavers tallied two goals in the first and third, with three goals coming in the second period. It was a quick hitter for Minot State when the ice breaker came along at 2:15 of the first. After 20 minutes of action, the Beavers went into the locker room in a good spot up 2-0. Things would ramp up in a hurry if Mary was to come up with an answer, because Minot State scored twice in a 47-second span to open the middle frame. With two periods gone, the scoreboard reads 5-0. In the third, the Beavers would add two more for good measure to ensure the uneven 7-0 win.

Matthew Yakubowski managed to get his second goal of the year through a shot in traffic, while Walker Jerome netted his first of two goals in the opening period. Sheldin Howard joined Jerome as the other Beaver forward with a two-goal effort as both tallies came in the second. His 10th and 11th were sandwiched between Carter Barley’s 17th of the season. Jerome would then hit on his 10th of the year, followed by Joey Moffatt who grabbed his 11th to cap off the scoring run. Brayden Pawluk was a distributor from the back end. He added three assists in the win. Christian Kadolph and Reid Arnold also stepped up with two assists each of their own. Goaltending was sturdy once again for the Beavers. Riley Wallace made his return to the crease after getting a rest last weekend. At this rate, you can just call him stone (Wall)ace as he stopped all 17 shots for his fifth shutout this year. Having already secured the season series, the Beavers picked up their fifth win over Mary in the 2023-24 calendar and hit double digit wins in the all-time series with their 10th against the Marauders. Minot State chased Mary for a convincing win in a midweek match. The Beavers will be back next week to wrap up the 2023-24 regular season before the ACHA National Tournament. On deck is a home-and-home series against another in-state rival: the Jamestown Jimmies. Both games are set to take place on February 28th and 29th.

NDSU also handed out a season-high 27 assists with all 10 players distributing at least one. It marked the most assists in a single-game for NDSU since passing out 28 against Dakota State on Dec. 29, 2017. Abby Schulte paced the Bison tying a career-high eight assists, while Heaven Hamling and Evans each added in four of their own. NDSU got off to a fast start finishing opening frame on an 8-3 run to grab a 22-13 edge. The Bison then pushed their lead into double digits in the second frame after six straight points finished off by a fastbreak layup from Schulte to make the score 28-15 with 8:05 to play in the half. NDSU closed out the first half with a 10-1 run that featured six points from Evans to increase its lead to 44-27 at the break. The Bison went on to close out the Tommies (14-13, 6-7 Summit) over the final two quarters to pick up the 96-53 win. NDSU will be back in action hosting North Dakota on Saturday.
