MINOT, ND – Rosters and coaches have been announced for the Optimist All-Star Volleyball Series. Maya Vibeto from Our Redeemer’s, Chinelo Udekwe from Bishop Ryan, and Savanna Filibek from Beulah have been chosen for the Class B matches. Kara Nunziato from Our Redeemer’s will be a coach for Class B. Matches are scheduled for June 10th at West Fargo Horace High School and June 11th at Bismarck St. Mary’s High School.

NDSU MENS BASKETBALL
FARGO, N.D. (NDSU) – The North Dakota State men’s basketball program has added transfer forward Jacksen Moni, NDSU head coach David Richman announced Wednesday. Moni comes to NDSU from Northern State University, where he totaled more than 1,500 career points over three seasons from 2021-24. He was named to the NSIC All-Conference first team as a sophomore and junior, and added NABC All-District first team honors as a junior in 2023-24. Moni brings 91 games of college experience – all starts – and has averaged nearly 17 points per game for his career. As a junior this past season, he averaged 21.3 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per contest, topping 30 points six times. Moni also drained 50-plus three-pointers in each of his three seasons at Northern State, and he shot just under 89 percent at the free throw line this year. Moni is a 6-foot-10 product of West Fargo Sheyenne HS.

NAHL
MINOT, ND – The Minot Minotauros will have some new competition next year. The North American Hockey League’s (NAHL) Board of Governors has approved a membership to operate in Forest Lake, MN. The Minnesota Mallards will compete in the Central Division beginning in the 2024-25 season. The Mallards are the fourth NAHL team based in Minnesota. Forest Lake, which is a northeast suburb of Minneapolis-St. Paul, will be the home of the Mallards. The team will play out of the Forest Lake Sports Center. The Mallards will bear the colors Maroon and Gold. The Mallards will be the eighth team in the NAHL’s Central Division. The Central currently has seven teams including the: Aberdeen Wings (Aberdeen, SD), Austin Bruins (Austin, MN), Bismarck Bobcats (Bismarck, ND), Minot Minotauros (Minot, ND), North Iowa Bulls (Mason City, IA), St. Cloud Norsemen (St. Cloud, MN) and Watertown Shamrocks (Coming 2024-25, Watertown, SD).

MINOT STATE BASEBALL
ABERDEEN, S.D. – Brent Riddle led the way for the Beavers, driving in four runs in the opener and finishing the day 3-for-9 with 5 RBIs as the Minot State baseball team split an NSIC doubleheader at Northern State on Wednesday. Riddle was 2-for-5 with 4 RBIs in the opener, a 15-4 win for the Beavers (14-27 overall, 11-20 NSIC), who jumped in front 8-3 in the nightcap but could not stop a frantic comeback by the Wolves (17-25, 12-20) who won 18-8 in 7 innings. Minot State now returns home to host St. Cloud State (25-16, 21-10) on Saturday and Sunday to close out its home season. Saturday’s doubleheader begins at 1:30 p.m. at Corbett Field and will be Senior Day with the team’s senior honored between games. Sunday’s single game begins at Noon.
GAME 1 | Minot State 15, Northern State 4
Junior Brent Riddle collected four RBIs to help power the Minot State Beavers past the Northern State Wolves 15-4 on Wednesday. Senior Cameron Bagshaw (3-0) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for Minot State. The right-hander went 2.2 innings, giving up three runs, zero earned, on four hits, allowing no walks and striking out one. Sophomore Colton Bagshaw also made an impact on the mound for the Beavers, starting the ballgame and throwing three innings, giving up one run on no hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. Riddle went 2-for-5 in addition to his four RBIs for the Beavers. Senior Ricky Apodaca put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk and three RBI. Senior Mark Ossanna also chipped in for Minot State, putting together three hits in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
The Beavers put runs on the scoreboard first, starting the scoring in the second inning. Minot State got an RBI single from junior Javier Gutierrez, scoring sophomore Noah Madas from second base. The Wolves failed to push any runs across before the Beavers offense got back to their scoring ways the next inning. The Minot State offense exploded for five runs, highlighted by a two-run single off the bat of Riddle, which brought the Beavers lead to 6-0. Minot State kept Northern State scoreless before building their lead to 8-0 the following inning. The Beavers scored twice, with one run coming across on Madas’ single. The Wolves fought back, closing the gap to 8-2 until Minot State added some insurance in the sixth. Junior Grant Gabbert crossed home plate with the lone run of the inning for the Beavers, bringing the score to 9-2 in favor of Minot State. Northern State got within 9-4 before the Beavers scored again in the seventh inning to stretch its lead to 15-4. The Minot State offense piled up six runs, highlighted by a three-run double off the bat of Apodaca. The score remained 15-4 for the rest of the game, as the Beavers coasted to the win.
GAME 2 | Northern State 18, Minot State 8
The Minot State Beavers brought an 8-7 lead into the seventh inning but could not hold on and fell 18-8 to the Northern State Wolves on Wednesday. Freshman Ayden Sauerbrei (1-1) came out of the bullpen for Minot State and took the loss. Senior Noah Balandran was a bright spot for the Beavers, coming out of the bullpen as well and throwing 1.2 shutout innings, allowing two hits, with no walks and two strikeouts. At the plate, the Beavers were led by junior Brian Parry who went 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI. Senior Mark Ossanna furnished a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI. Junior Grant Gabbert also contributed for Minot State, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding a double, a walk and an RBI.
The Beavers got the scoring started early, putting one run on the board in the top of the first inning. Gabbert came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State and get them on the board. The Wolves then rallied to score three runs and take a 3-1 lead before the Beavers got back on the board in the third. Ossanna came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minot State, which tightened the Wolves lead to 3-2. Minot State held the Wolves off the board before rallying to snatch an 8-3 lead in the fourth. The Beavers bats heated up in the inning, scoring six runs, including a two-run single off the bat of Parry. The Beavers were unable to hold the lead, as Northern State scored 15 times over the remaining three innings to grab the 18-8 win.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Willi Castro hit a 3-run home run on his 27th birthday and Joe Ryan pitched six innings for his first win of the year as the Minnesota Twins beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3 Wednesday. Castro’s homer capped a four-run second inning against Chicago left-hander Garrett Crochet. It was his second career home run on his birthday and it drove in Austin Martin and Christian Vásquez. Castro entered the game batting .169 with one homer and four RBI as one of several Twins’ hitters struggling at the plate in the first month of the season. He also added a double off Crochet in the fourth for his second multi-hit game of the year. Ryan (1-1) had a pair of three-strikeout innings, but also allowed solo homers in the third to Kevin Pillar and Korey Lee. The Twins righty struck out eight and gave up three runs to win for the first time in five starts. Following the two homers, Ryan responded by striking out three batters — all swinging — in a scoreless fourth. He also pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning to end his night. Minnesota, which had a season-high 13 hits, has won the first three games of the four-game series against the White Sox, who hold the worst record in the majors at 3-21. Crochet (1-4) surrendered five runs on seven hits in four innings. He’s lost his last three outings.

The Twins announced after Wednesday’s game that Simeon Woods Richardson (1-0, 1.69) will be recalled from Triple-A St. Paul to start Thursday’s series finale. Bailey Ober’s start will be pushed back to Friday in Anaheim.
