We can always find something to be thankful for, and there may be reasons why we ought to be thankful for even those dispensations which appear dark and frowning.

MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Twins come to Detroit with a slim 1 1/2 game lead over the Angels for the second AL Wild Card spot with 10 games to play. The Twins play seven of those games against the Tigers, starting with a four-game set at Comerica Park that begins tonight. Minnesota will turn to rookie left-hander Adalberto Mejia (4-6, 4.62 ERA), while the Tigers will counter with veteran Jordan Zimmermann (8-12, 6.18 ERA).

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Timberwolves have added John Lucas III as a player development coach. The addition gives coach Tom Thibodeau another familiar face with a deep background as he tries to turn the Timberwolves into a playoff team. Thibodeau coached Lucas in Chicago and then for part of last season with the Timberwolves before he was waived.

The Wolves also added Larry Greer as an advanced scout, Steve Molina as a video assistant and promoted Sam Newman-Beck to coaching assistant/video scouting director. Greer comes to Minnesota from Oklahoma City and Molina from the Detroit Pistons. Newman-Beck is entering his eighth season with the Timberwolves. He was the head video coordinator for the past two seasons.

The Timberwolves open training camp on Saturday in San Diego.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - The banged-up Green Bay Packers have lost another key player to injury with outside linebacker Nick Perry scheduled to have hand surgery. Coach Mike McCarthy says he doesn't know how much time Perry will miss. He was off to a good start as the bookend to fellow edge rusher Clay Matthews with 1 1/2 sacks. The Packers' first-round draft pick in 2012, Perry had a breakout 2016 last season with 11 sacks in 14 games.

The loss of Perry places added importance on the return of Ahmad Brooks, who was a full participant in practice on Wednesday after missing the Week 2 loss at Atlanta because of a concussion.

UNDATED - Week 3 of the NFL season begins tonight with the Los Angeles Rams playing the San Francisco 49er's. LA is 1-1, while the 49er's are 0-2.

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) - A high school golfer in Pennsylvania has defied huge odds by recording two holes-in-one in the same round. Parkland High School golfer Ben Tetzlaff tells The (Allentown) Morning Call he still can't believe the feat, which came during a nine-hole practice round Monday at Iron Lakes Country Club. The National Hold-In-One Registry calculated the odds of the feat at 67 million-to-1.

Parkland coach Scott Levan says he missed the first ace, but saw the second when Tetzlaff hit a 9-iron on the 140-yard sixth hole. Tetzlaff had already sunk a gap wedge on the 104-yard second hole. Tetzlaff's career-low round is a 76 he shot at Allentown Municipal Golf Course. He hopes to play golf in college. Tetzlaff says, "I still can't believe it and I'm the one who did it."
