MINOT, ND - An area athlete is a finalist for a national volleyball award.  Morgan Olson from Our Redeemer's is one of 25 finalists for the National Freshman of the Year.  Olson earned all state and all region honors while leading the Knights in kills with 418 and assists with 307.  She also recorded 380 digs this season.  The award is handed out by prepvolleyball.com and the winner will be announced Friday, January 31st.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Minnesota's Supreme Court has dismissed a lawsuit challenging the funding plan for a new Vikings football stadium.  The decision today clears a late obstacle that threatened to hold up construction and delay a planned 2016 opening.

Minnesota finance officials postponed a $468 million bond sale while the case was pending.  It was filed Jan. 10 by a former Minneapolis mayoral candidate who argued the stadium funding was unconstitutional.  The stadium will be built on the Metrodome site.  State lawmakers authorized construction in 2012. Taxpayers are footing about half the cost.

HONOLULU (AP) - NFL great Jerry Rice has picked New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees and St. Louis defensive end Robert Quinn as the anchors of his Pro Bowl team.  Rice made the selections today in Hawaii after winning a coin toss against Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders. Rice called tails.  The decision left Sanders with Kansas City running back Jamaal Charles and Houston defensive end J.J. Watt.

When asked whether the new schoolyard style format would leave players with bruised egos, Watt said he won't forget whom Rice picked first.

The toss and selections start a new process for the NFL in selecting this year's Pro Bowl team. Gone is the AFC and NFC teams.  Instead Rice and Sanders serve as captains and general managers in charge of drafting the NFL stars for their team.

UNDATED (AP) - NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is concerned that extra-point kicks after touchdowns are getting too automatic, so he's thinking about possible changes to add some excitement to the game.  Goodell suggests perhaps making a touchdown worth seven points, with teams having the option to run a play for another point. But failing on that play would cost them a point.  The success rates for extra-point kicks this season was nearly 100 percent.

DETROIT (AP) - Correctly predicting the outcome of every game in the NCAA men's basketball tournament will be worth $1 billion to the winning entrant.  Quicken Loans Inc. has announced that it will team with investor Warren Buffett's Omaha, Neb.-based Berkshire Hathaway on the "Billion Dollar Bracket Challenge."  The mortgage lender says any qualified entrant who correctly predicts the winners of every game in the tournament will be paid in 40 annual installments of $25 million.
