     The United States has been eliminated by Belgium 2-1 in overtime in the second round of the World Cup, puncturing the soccer bubble that Americans had enjoyed for a couple of weeks.
     Following a scoreless 90 minutes of regulation, Belgium scored two quick goals at the start of the 30-minute overtime. Julian Green got one back for the U.S. in the 107th minute of the match. Despite putting on late pressure, the U.S. failed to score the equalizer.
     U.S. goalie Tim Howard was the reason the Americans even reached overtime, making several tough stops during the scoreless regulation. Howard finished with 16 saves.
     The U.S. was trying to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2002.
     Belgium next plays Argentina, which beat Switzerland 1-0 in extra time. The lone goal was scored in the 118th minute.


MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Joe Mauer drove in two runs before leaving with an injury, Eduardo Nunez homered and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 10-2 Tuesday night.
     Mauer extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a two-run double down the left-field line in the fourth inning, but was noticeably limping as he ran to second base. The team said he has a strained muscle on his right side and will be evaluated Wednesday.
     Ricky Nolasco earned his first win in five starts, allowing one run and eight hits in six innings.
     Eric Hosmer had four hits for the Royals.

     - Jose Bautista and Colby Rasmus hit solo homers as Toronto downed Milwaukee 4-1 to halt a three-game losing streak.
     - The Angels took Game 1 of a doubleheader as Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton homered in an 8-4 rout of the White Sox in Chicago.
     - The Angels completed the sweep as Cole Calhoun belted a two-run homer and Howie Kendrick had two RBIs in a 7-5 win over the White Sox.
     - Seattle won for the ninth time in 11 games as Robinson Cano and Kyle Seager each had three hits and three RBIs a 13-2 laugher at Houston.
     - Baltimore ripped Texas 8-3 behind homers by Caleb Joseph, Steve Pearce and Nelson Cruz.
     - David Price fanned nine and allowed a run and four hits in seven innings to pitch Tampa Bay past the Yankees 2-1 in the Bronx.
     - Andrelton Simmons hit a two-run single in a three-run fourth that pushed Atlanta past the New York Mets 5-4.
     - Jayson Werth and Anthony Rendon each hit two-run doubles while Washington was building a 7-0 lead by the fourth inning of a 7-1 pounding of Colorado.
     - Wade Miley blanked Pittsburgh over eight innings before the Pirates scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to beat Arizona 3-2.
     - Miami handed Philadelphia its fifth straight loss as Ed Lucas singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 11th to lift the Marlins past the Phillies 5-4.

     - The Chicago Cubs beat Boston 2-1 on Luis Valbuena's sac-fly in the ninth.
     - Tim Lincecum followed his no-hitter by scattering four hits in eight shutout innings to lead San Francisco past St. Louis 5-0.
     - Lonnie Chisenhall hit a two-run homer and Nick Swisher, Yan Gomes and David Murphy each had two RBIs as Cleveland clobbered the Dodgers 10-3 in Los Angeles.
     - The Padres were 8-2 winners against the Reds in San Diego as Carlos Quentin delivered a two-run homer and three RBIs.

MILWAUKEE (AP) - As expected, the Milwaukee Bucks have hired Jason Kidd as coach after completing a deal with the Brooklyn Nets for his rights. The Bucks sent the Nets two second-round picks for Kidd, who went 44-38 in his only season as Brooklyn coach.
     To make room for Kidd, the Bucks fired Larry Drew yesterday. Drew went 15-67 in his only season guiding the Bucks, the worst record in the league.
