MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The Minnesota Twins have named Garvin Alston pitching coach. The 45-year-old Alston became bullpen coach for the Oakland Athletics last season after starting the year as the San Diego Padres' pitching rehab coordinator.

He previously served as bullpen coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks and as minor league pitching coordinator and minor league rehab pitching coordinator in two earlier stints with the A's. Alston pitched in the Rockies, Royals and Dodgers systems and made six major league appearances with Colorado in 1996.

The Twin announced Alston's hiring today. He replaces Neil Allen, who was let go after three seasons. The Twins' team ERA of 4.59 ranked 19th in baseball this season.

NEW YORK (AP) - Joe Girardi is out as New York Yankees manager after 10 seasons. The team made the announcement today. A person familiar with decision says Yankees general manager Brian Cashman recommended that Girardi not return. Girardi succeeded Joe Torre after the 2007 season and led the team to a World Series title in 2009 but has fallen short each year since. Girardi led a young squad on a surprising run to the AL Championship Series this season, but he admitted he made a mistake not asking for a replay in Game 2 of the Division Series against Cleveland.

CHICAGO (AP) - The Chicago Cubs have parted ways with pitching coach Chris Bosio and hired Chili Davis as their hitting coach. It's part of a major shakeup to Joe Maddon's staff following their ouster in the National League Championship Series a year after winning the World Series. The Cubs confirmed the moves today and also said Brian Butterfield will be the new third base coach. Davis replaces John Mallee, who served as the Cubs' hitting coach for the last three seasons. Butterfield replaces Gary Jones, who served as major league third base coach for the last four seasons.

CLEVELAND (AP) - The Cleveland Indians have hired Carl Willis as their pitching coach to replace Mickey Callaway, who left to manage the New York Mets. Willis is back for his second stint with the club. He served as Cleveland's pitching coach from 2003-09, when he tutored Cy Young pitchers CC Sabathia and Cliff Lee among others.
