KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Minnesota Twins have signed All-Star catcher Kurt Suzuki to a two-year, $12 million contract extension.  The Twins got the deal done today, keeping a respected veteran around the clubhouse on a team that continues to struggle in the standings. Fox Sports first reported the agreement that includes a vesting option for 2017.

Suzuki has been one of the few bright spots for the Twins this season. He signed a one-year deal in the offseason and has delivered one of his finest stories. He will turn 31 in October, but made his first All-Star team and is hitting .304 with two home runs and 41 RBIs.  He has also been well-received by the Twins' pitching staff, delivering some guidance and leadership after Joe Mauer moved from catcher to first base.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The Oakland Athletics have traded left-hander Tommy Milone to the Minnesota Twins for outfielder Sam Fuld. The A's announced the deal this morning before the trade deadline.

Milone requested a trade given his recent success and demotion to Triple-A Sacramento. The left-hander went 6-0 with a 2.62 ERA over 11 starts when he was sent down July 5 following the trade for Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel from the Cubs.

Fuld began the season with Oakland. The A's liked Fuld coming out of spring training but designated him for assignment April 12. The Twins claimed him off waivers eight days later.

UNDATED (AP) - The Oakland Athletics won the Jon Lester sweepstakes.  The AL West leaders have acquired the left-hander and outfielder Jonny Gomes from Boston for slugging outfielder Yoenis Cespedes before the trade deadline.  Oakland will also received cash from Boston while the Red Sox will also get a draft pick in a deal.

Lester is having an outstanding season with a 10-7 record and career-best 2.52 ERA in 21 starts. He's allowed seven earned runs in his last eight games with 54 strikeouts and nine walks. But the Red Sox put him on the trading block because he can become a free agent after the season.

Lester joins a starting rotation with a team that has the best record in baseball. Scott Kazmir and Sonny Gray are already double digit winners this season and the staff also includes the recently acquired Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hamel.

     In other deals:

     - Boston got rid of No. 2 starter John Lackey who has been dealt to St. Louis for fellow righty Joe Kelly and outfielder Allen Craig.  Lackey is 11-7 with a 3.60 ERA in the fourth year of a five-year, $82.5 million deal. Kelly is 2-2 with a 4.37 ERA in seven starts. Craig is batting .237 with seven homers and 44 RBIs.

     - Baltimore has picked up left-handed reliever Andrew Miller from Boston for minor league pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez.  The 29-year-old Miller has a 2.34 ERA in 50 appearances with the Red Sox.

     - Washington has acquired two-time All-Star infielder Asdrubal Cabrera and cash from Cleveland for little-used shortstop Zach Walters.

     - Seattle has acquired outfielder Chris Denorfia from the San Diego Padres for a pair of minor leaguers.  The 34-year old Denorfia is hitting .242 with one homer, 10 doubles and 16 RBIs.

     - Left-handed hitter Gerardo Parra has been picked up by Milwaukee in a traded with Arizona for a pair of minor leaguers. Parra is hitting .259, about 25 points lower than his career average.

-The Boston Red Sox have obtained third baseman Kelly Johnson from the New York Yankees for shortstop Stephen Drew, who is hitting .176 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 39 games. Johnson is hitting .219 with six homers and 22 RBIs and is on the disabled list. Boston also sent cash to New York.
